Chapter 8: The Little White Lie
Haruhi unlocked her flat door, and ran through the door slamming it behind her. It wasn't part of her nature to get so angry over things, but this, this, she couldn't help but get angry about. She even forgot to lock the door after herself, running into her room and lying flat on her stomach crying into her pillow.
She couldn't help herself from thinking why would Tamaki would kiss Nanako, sure they were engaged but that meant nothing if they didn't love each other. He might have hated it right? But the look on his face said otherwise, it was a face a full bliss, like he was kissing his true love. Maybe that was it maybe he didn't love her anymore maybe he moved on, knowing he couldn't have Haruhi he moved on to Nanako.
But that was impossible right, the letter had said that he loved HER and wanted only her, but then that kiss went against everything he had told her, it contradicted all the feelings he had ever shown her. That kiss was like a blow to the face it said 'Stay back he's mine.' and that's what confused her the most. Why say you loved someone when it wasn't true, was he teasing her, giving her false hope?
She hoped not, that kiss could have been a lie towards Nanako. But why did he look like he was enjoying it so much. Nothing was making sense anymore, she was finding it hard to form coherent thoughts.
She lay in bed for what seemed to be hours, thinking about that stupid kiss and why he did it. Why was she thinking so hard about it? He loved her right that's what he said, and she shouldn't doubt him, he probably had a reason for his actions. She was cut of abruptly when she heard her bed room door. It was her dad. She hadn't even heard him come in, she was too lost in thought to care about small insignificant sounds around her.
"Honey, are you ok? You forgot to lock the front door." He asked. She looked up at him with puffy and teary eyes. When he saw her face he rushed over to her bed and sat at the edge. "Honey what's wrong?" he asked again his voice becoming even more worried.
"N-nothing I just d-don't feel too well." She said voice wavering hoping he wouldent see past her lie. She couldn't just say that she was pregnant and that she caught the baby's father kissing his fiancé.
Her father looked at her uncertain, but then sighed. "Ok, but you know that you can tell me if anything's wrong right?"
"I know dad, I love you." And she meant it he was always there even when other weren't and I guess that was partly her fault, she didn't want to seem weak, she always told herself that she could fend for herself that she didn't need anyone. But that pent up inside of her and it needed to come out somewhere. She knew that host club wouldn't judge her but she was sometimes self-conscious, so she went to her dad let everything go, he was like the mum she never had.
"I love you too, I'm gonna start on dinner, I know I'm not the best cook but you don't seem well enough to." He said smiling. Dinner. Oh ye Hikaru was meant to be coming over for dinner at five!
Her dad made his way over to her door and was just about to close the door before he heard Haruhi shout after him. He looked back at her confused. "Yes?"
"Umm, well you see Hikaru's coming over today for dinner at five." She said quickly, her dad nodded in understanding.
"So it looks like I'll be cooking for three then." He shuffled out of the door and started to prepare dinner.
Haruhi sighed and flopped back down onto her bed. She looked to her side to see it was four thirty. "Well I better start getting ready." She said to herself. She got up and started to walk towards the bathroom, realising she was still in her school uniform she stopped herself and walked over to her dresser.
She picked out a long white sleeve top and a pair of Capri jeans, and made her way back over to the bathroom locking the door behind her. She turned on the shower waiting for the water to turn the right temperature, when she thought it was ok she striped down and climbed in. As the warm water hit her bare skin, she felt as if she could finally let go, that she could finally relax.
As she felt the water gush past her, she put a hand to her stomach. There was a baby in there- well a foetus. That in more or less than eight months was going to be a living breathing child that was going to grow up without a father because she had to go and fall in love with a rich bastard. They didn't have enough money to support herself and her father, let alone a little baby born out of wedlock.
She tried not to cry but things these days were so overwhelming, and she could only blame it on hormones and the effect they were having in her, now that she was around three weeks pregnant.
She washed herself of and stepped of drying herself and slipping on her clean cloths. She walked out feeling relived of the weight she had once carried on her shoulders. She looked at her bedroom clock and seeing it was fifteen minutes to five went her vanity mirror and started to brush her hair. She noticed that her hair was growing longer and made a mental note to get it cut next time she was in town.
She walked out of her bedroom and into the kitchen to see her dad cooking stir fry. At the sound of Haruhi's door opening, her dad looks back and notices her standing at the door frame of the kitchen, and then looked back to the food. "Hikaru should be here any minute now, be a good girl and set up the table please." Her dad asked. Haruhi replied with a simple yes and went to set up the table.
A minute later her dad came in with three bowls of stir fry two in his hands and one in the crack of his elbow. He set the bowls down right when there was a knock at the door.
"I'll get it, it's probably Hikaru." She said and ran towards the door. She opened it and saw Hikaru standing there.
"Hey," He said.
"Hey, come in." She said side stepping to make room for him to walk in. he took of his shoes and Haruhi handed him a pair of slippers. Once he slipped them on he looked Haruhi over.
"Uh, you look nice." He said smiling, she blushed and punched him in the chest.
"Not bad yourself," This caused Hikaru to let out a small chuckle and Haruhi to smile. "Come on let's eat I'm starving." She said rubbing her stomach. This reminded Hikaru.
"So… um are you planning on telling your dad about… you know." He said gesturing to her stomach. Haruhi's hand moved back to her stomach.
"Oh ye." She whispered to herself. Once her voice returned she answered him properly. "Ye I am, I think I've been putting it off for long enough."
"Well ok. Just remember I'm here for you ok?" Haruhi nodded Hikaru was like her best friend he was always there for her when Tamaki couldn't be and Kaoru. They would always cheer her up when she was upset about Tamaki.
"Guys the foods getting cold!" Her dad shouted from the living room.
"Come on." Haruhi said pulling him along.
They eat for a while in silence savouring their food. Haruhi wished they didn't need have to tell her dad, but Hikaru had other ideas. He gently nudged her as if to tell her to go on and tell him. Haruhi looked up at him with pleading eyes, but Hikaru knew better and kept his gaze tight.
Haruhi sighed catching her dad's attention. He looked up from his food. "Is everything ok Haruhi?" He asked. She looked up at Hikaru again but with no avail.
"Well you see dad I think I'm… no wait I know I'm…" She looked down at her lap sighing. There was no way she could do this her dad would kill her. Then she felt Hikaru grab her hand under the table. She looked up at him and he smiled. "I'm pregnant." She said, clenching her eyes shut waiting for her dad's outburst, she felt Hikaru squeeze her hand and she looked up at her dad.
He looked down solemnly then looked back up at her. "Who's the father?" he asked. She felt Hikaru squeeze her hand again, but he still didn't open his mouth.
What was she meant to tell her dad, she couldn't tell him it was Tamaki, then he would totally flip. He was still getting used to them dating- she hadn't told him about the engagement to Nanako. But she had to say something or her dad would get suspicious.
"It's Hikaru's." She said quickly not thinking about what she had said. She felt Hikaru tense and she looked up at him his eyes were large and his mouth was hanging open, she gave him a pleading look and he composed himself before her dad could notice. She heard her dad take in a deep breath.
"Well then I can't help but be happy for you both." He said. "I'm going to go to sleep, I'm suddenly very tired, I guess I just need to think this over."
"Yes dad, good night."
"Good night Mr Fujioka." Once her dad had gone into his room they sat in an awkward silence until Hikaru spoke up.
"Why did you do that?" He asked his voice still shaken with surprise.
Haruhi looked down at her lap for what seemed to be the nth time tonight and sighed. "I saw Tamaki kissing Nanako, and I couldn't just tell my dad that he was the father he would totally freak." She looked up at Hikaru he had a mixture of pity and anger on his face, but she could tell the anger wasn't from the fact that Tamaki had kissed someone else but something much more personal.
"So you used me!" He shouted. Shock filtered over her face. Is that what he thought?
"No! I would never do that-" She was cut off by Hikaru.
"Well that's what you just did!" he shouted, his voice turned back to normal and he whispered something under his breath load enough for her to hear. "And I thought you actually liked me how dumb can I be?" He was laughing at himself.
"I do like you Hikaru! Don't ever say I don't!" Haruhi said her voice filled with sorrow.
"You know that's not what I mean!" he shouted. "I mean-" But he was cut off by a pair of lips over his.
What was she doing she loved Tamaki, she couldn't be kissing Hikaru! But if Tamaki could move on so fast so could she, she didn't need Tamaki anymore. She may have been naïve before but she had always knew that Hikaru liked her. Kaoru had told her when she started dating Tamaki. She thought that maybe she could force herself to forget all about Tamaki and maybe she could learn to love Hikaru.
She broke the kiss and looked up at him, he was about to open his mouth to talk but she kissed him silent again. When they broke apart again he whispered something against her lips that sounded like 'I love you.' She didn't want to lose him and so she said the worst thing she could have ever said. Something so meaningless and so empty that it seemed to her it wouldn't affect the only one she said it to, but the truth was that it would have a bigger impact then she had ever anticipated.
"I love you too."
