Whispers in the Dark

Chapter 15

Revelation

"Lord Weller, how much further until we reach the next village?"

"We should be arriving in just a few minutes, your majesty."

Saralegui kept his grip tight on the reins of his horse as they made their way through the village. His goal set souly on finding Yuri and Wolfram and bring them home safe and sound. As he rode, he looked down at the corner of his eye at the sash around his waist and torso, the sword that rest at his side bumped at his leg and against the horse. His sword was there for his own personal protection. Even with Berius, Conrart and Gunter at his side, he did not want to stand aside and watch. After learning what true power he had in his wake because of the holy sword of Seisakoku, he realized that he could do so much more, that he was not just a king with special power of manipulation. He had true power. He could use that power to fight.

However, he knew that his power was not exactly at its full potential. He still had a lot of work to do before it could be deemed perfect. So, he hoped that his sword will not be needed in his trip, for he knew that with his past anger issues, if he were to snap when he saw the man behind this madness, no one would be able to stop him, not even Yuri.

Yuri was very precious to him. He was the one person who continued to believe in him, besides Berius who has been beside him since he was young, Yuri was the one who was always there and continued to trust him even after all the pain and chaos that he put the mazoku through. He was so precious to him. Oh so precious! He knew that if he wanted to keep Yuri in his life any longer, he would have to find him.

He's already been deemed missing for over four days now. He was growing worried. Wolfram has been missing since yesterday. He needed to know that the blonde was okay. He had to see him alive and well. He needed to know that the blonde did not blame him for being taken. He wouldn't be able to face the blonde if he knew that Wolfram blamed him for not being there to help him.

"Your majesty...?" Gunter asked, calling out to him. The blonde king shook his head and came back to reality. He looked over at the white haired valet and nodded. Gunter was concerned for Saralegui since he seemed to zone out so quickly, but repeated his statement. "When we arrive at the village, you must stay with us to continue the search. We will not tolerate you running off again, with all due respect of course."

Saralegui smiled and looked up at the sky above through the top of the trees. "I can reassure you, Lord von Christ, that my whereabouts will stay with you and no one else. I know I was foolish. I will not make the same mistake again."

"I would hope not, your majesty, I did not bring any more herbs along with me. I won't be able to heal you again." The brunette smiled and leaned his head back. "Hopefully, though, you will not need it at all. Am I right, your majesty?"

"I would hope you're right, Kohime." Saralegui looked over at the brunette that rode beside him and nodded. "I will not act so foolishly and cause delay. You can guarantee that."

"Of course not, your majesty." Kohime nodded. He felt an overwhelming pride that he has been given the honor of accompanying his highness on his frantic search. "I have complete trust in your actions."

As they continued through the forest-covered village, the sound of branches shaking and rustling caused Conrart to stop his horse and take a quick look around. The others behind him noticed this and stopped in their tracks as well.

"What is it, Conrart?" Gunter asked.

"I heard something in the trees." Conrart replied as he grabbed the hilt of his sword. "It could be nothing but just as a precaution we must be careful."

Kohime was particularly silent, a hand to his ear as he listened closely to the trees. His eyes closed as he concentrated on the sounds around him. He was perfectly calm!

"We have nothing to fear." Kohime said as he listened. Saralegui looked over at him as he continued to trace the sound. "It sounds like...wings, gently fluttering in the wind, heading towards us."

"You can hear a single bird from this distance?" Conrart asked.

"I have exceptional hearing. My father had the same hearing as well. He was known as the "Night Owl". When he fought in the war, he would be the one to take patrol at night, his great sense of hearing came in handy when the enemy planned an attack in the middle of the night. He saved them from their dastardly fate." Kohime explained. He opened his eyes and rubbed them, a smile on his face. "So peaceful. Such an elegant bird!"

"Can you figure out what bird it is?" Saralegui asked.

"It is a small bird. I can't identify it from this distance, but I believe that the only kind of bird at that size and speed, would be either a regular pigeon or a small dove." Kohime explained through a thought process.

"A dove?!" Conrart exclaimed. "That could be a messenger dove."

"A messenger dove!" Kohime said.

Just as Kohime said what he did, the small bird flew out from the trees and made itself known. The small white bird making its way over to King Saralegui. The blonde king noticed this and held out a hand. The small white bird perched itself onto the palm of his hand and bowed its head, bringing light to the small pouch around its neck and hanging on its chest.

"It seems that you were right, Lord Weller, it is a messenger dove. However, who it is from is still unknown." Saralegui said as he carefully took out the message from the bird's pouch. He handed the message over to Conrart who accepted it humbly and began to unravel it.

"It is written in the demon kingdom scriptures, it is most likely from either Anissina or Gwendal and his troupe." Conrart said in observation. "Would you like me to read it aloud, your majesty?"

"That would be helpful, Conrart, thank you." Saralegui replied.

Conrart cleared his throat and began to read aloud the text: "On behalf of Lord von Voltaire, we send word to his majesty stating that our Majesty, King Yuri, and his fiancé, "Lord Wolfram von Beliefeld, have been found and are in our care. Their status in health are deterring by the minute, from critical to unstable. We are doing everything we can to keep them alive. We ask that you stop what you are doing and return to Blood Pledge at once. His highness will need you all, in his trip to recovery."

Everyone was silent as Conrart finished the message, his own voice slowly dying out as he hears the urgency in the message in his hands. No on dared to say a word. All trying to process just what they have learned.

King Yuri has been found! Their prayers have been answered. The demon king has been obtained is returning home at that very moment, however, what worried them the most, was what the message said of their status. "Keep them alive", "critical to unstable", these words made their worries only sky-rocket as they try to guess just what kind of hell the two had to face in the few days that they had been kept by those awful people.

"We must get going. They need us to return as soon as possible." Saralegui spoke as he gripped his reins. "We must hurry, Berius."

Berius said nothing as he rode up next to his king and got ready to leave, back through the villages and back to the docks of Big Cimaron.

"Wait. your majesty. You have consider that-"

"Consider? Why are you being so hesitant? We must get going. We don't have time for lolly-gagging." Saralegui sharpened his eyes at Conrart. "Do you not want to see Yuri and your brother?"

"That is not it at all."

"Then please explain."

Conrart sighed and looked back at the dove. "Even if we leave now and go through the night, it will still take at least thirty-six hours to reach Shin Makoku. It will take time no matter when we leave, we must stay calm and think rationally."

Saralegui said nothing. He just clenched his fists around the reins and grinded his teeth. "I know of our predicament. Our search was a waste of time, as Gwendal feared. We ventured this far and came back with nothing. I failed to help find Yuri at all. That's why I want to get back as soon as we can. I need to see him and make sure that he at least survives."

"Yuri will not blame you for not finding him. He'll understand that you tried your best." Conrart replied.

"I kow he will, Yuri is very forgiving and trusting, but what will not mean that I will forgive myself so easily."

Saralegui could not wait any longer and he whipped the reins on his horse and his horse moved its feet and began to make its way back through the village. Berius followed in suit, along with Kohime.

Gunter looked over at Conrart who placed the small bird on his shoulder. "What do you suppose we do now?"

"We do as his majesty says. We quickly head back to Big Cimaron and return to Shin Makoku." Conrart grabbed the reins and quickly took off. Gunter took off after Conrart.

The carriage rattled and bucked as it was dragged across the desert sands. Shouri kept his arms crossed over his chest, his facial features stern as he impatiently waited to return to land. His anxiety levels only increased as he worried for his little brother, Wolfram as well and to discover their current conditions.

After seeing the arrows impaled into their bodies, Shouri felt a sickness run over him, however, his anger and frustration counter-balanced that sickness and the nausea quickly subsided. To see his little brother and his friend in such a mangled mess of blood and torn flesh, he couldn't help but feel angry at the bastard who would do such a terrible thing. He also felt angry at himself for allowing something like this to happen to his little brother.

He swore to himself that he would protect Yuri, that's why he got stronger. He made sure to have Ulrike train him with his magic. He wanted to get stronger. He wanted to protect him. But when his brother needed him most, he was not there for him, he was completely oblivious to the whole thing. He was back on Earth, training with Bob so that he himself would be a good Maou.

But when Murata came to see him that night, telling him the news of his little brother's kidnapping, he felt his whole world crashing down around him. He felt as if he had failed to keep him safe.

So, to see him like that, all battered and bruised, soaked in his own blood, arrow and burns littering his body, he didn't know what to do at the moment. He felt like he wanted to scream. He wanted to punch something even. But he didn't. He held back. If not for, he didn't want to admit it, but without the help of Murata and even Lady Cecilie, he would have surely done something stupid to endanger his little brother.

Squeezing his hands around his arms, Shouri grinded his teeth as thought back to his brother. He felt like shit for not realizing that something was going to happen to him. He had a feeling that he should have gone to Shin Makoku along with his brother, even if not with him at that moment. He has learned to travel through dimension from Ulrike, although it hasn't been perfected, he figured he would be able to figure it out, but he didn't go. He had a lot of work to do for Bob, he figured that Yuri would be fine. But he was wrong. So very wrong!

A hand was placed over his and he slowly began to release his tight grip on his arm. He looked over at the hand on his and then followed the arm that connected to it and saw that it was Lady Cecilie She had a sad smile on her face as she looked at him.

"Lord Shouri, please have faith in my son." Lady Cecilie gave his hand another squeeze. "Gwendal is doing everything he can to make sure his majesty survives this. We're going as quickly as possible to make it back to land and back to Shin Makoku. Please, have faith in him."

"I understand that Gwendal is doing everything he can, and I appreciate that, but," Shouri took a deep breath, his chest tighting up again. "I can't help but worry about Yu-chan. Anything could be happening in that medical tent, but they won't tell us. How can I not worry?"

"Shibuya will be fine. He's got Lord von Voltaire's best medical staff handling their injuries. I don't want to make any promises though since their injuries are extremely severe." Murata said.

"You are not helping, friend of my little brother." Shouri muttered.

"Wolfram and Shibuya will pull through. I will not let them die. I don't how I'm going to do it yet, but I will make sure of it. This country can't afford to lose its king just yet." Murata exclaimed as he looked over at Shouri. "You have to have more faith in Lord von Voltaire."

"I do have faith in him, I just, I have this voice in my head telling me that something bad is going to happen." Shouri said. He squeezed his hands together, his eyes clenched tightly shut as he tried not to think about it.

Lady Cecilie folded her hands in front of her, closed her eyes and prayed for her son. "My poor baby, Wolfie, please hang on."

Murata placed a hand on Lady Cecilie's leg and gave her a sympathetic look. Shouri sighed and looked back out the window of the carriage. He saw sun was beginning to set again. It was still going to be quiet a while before they reached main lands. It took them almost a day to reach Yuri's location, and its going to take almost a day to return to stable ground. Shouri knew, that with their conditions, the blood that they've lost, and the injuries that could grow infected, it would be a miracle if they lasted long enough to reach the main lands, let alone Shin Makoku.

"We just have to get there in time." Shouri squeezed his fingers as tightly as he could, he bit his lip. "We just have to. We will make it, Yu-chan. Just hang on."

Its been a few hours since last of the extractions took place. Tensions were high between Jean and Mana as they watched over their paitents. So far, nothing has happened that could be considered dangerous. The horses have slowed down just a bit in hopes that another jump can be avoided. Everything seemed to be settling down.

Mana had his head hung, his eyes closed as he tried to calm himself down. His brown hair layered itself onto the sides of his face, hiding his eyes. Jean, sitting directly beside him, could feel Mana's unease and his suffering. He knew that Mana feared doing this kind of thing, ever since the war.

Mana has watched many people from the war fall. He was there, one of the few healers to try and help those wounded, but he's seen so many of them die from his attempts at saving them. He managed to save about sixty-one percent of the patients he was given, forty-nine percent died from their injuries.

However, there was one death that he took the hardest. He was right there when he it happened. He was not a patient, wasn't even a soldier at the time. He was a fellow healer. His former partner in the field. Their was word that a large group of wounded soldiers were being brought into the medical tent, it was just him, along with his partner to help bring the first batch of wounded inside.

"Come on, Mana, you're too slow."

"Please wait, you shouldn't be so careless."

"What are you talking about? Everything's fine. We're too far from the battle grounds anyways. Nothing's going to come out and bite me."

Mana moved his knees to his chest and placed his forehead onto his knees. The flashbacks were coming back. They always did. But he couldn't handle them. Not now.

"Mana, help me with this one. His legs seems to be broken. He can't walk."

"Coming."

It was too late though. It was at that moment when the unexpected happened. It was a raid. A sneak attack. Bullets began to fly throughout the tents, inside and outside. He was the first one attacked. Mana's eyes widened in horror as he saw the blood escape his skull and the bullet as well. All life seemed to leave his eyes when Mana watched him fall.

"FRANZ!"

Mana held his head as tightly as he could. Tears collected in his eyelids as his mind replayed the horrific scene. No matter how many times he sees it, it feels just as fresh as they day it happened. His body shook, he was covered in a cold sweat. Jean did nothing but watch. He knew it was dangerous to try and snap him out of it. Gwendal ordered him never to try and forcefully remove him from that state. Only to stay quiet and calm.

Jean pulled his friend into an embrace, an arm around Mana's shoulder, Jean rubbed his arm, trying to comfort his friend through the tough mental battle. He's seen this happen to his friend many times. It never got any easier.

"Franz...I'm gonna save you." Mana mumbled to himself. His tears finally rolling down his cheeks from the pressure his closed eyes made.

Franz. Jean knew that name. Mana had told him about Franz one night in their quarters after Jean walked in on him having another post traumatic stress related dream. He told him about how they used to be a team back in the war. They were part of the medical staff and that they grew close. Mana had even began to grow some feelings for his friend. But he never got to learn if his feelings were returned. He was gone before he could even ask.

Jean understood then why this Franz guy was so important to him. Having someone you care about, ripped away from you in such a terrible way. It reminded Jean of Miss Suzanna Julia and Adalbert, how they were engaged to be wed, but never got the chance to, as the war had taken his love from him. The Great One had other plans it would presume.

Mana came back to his senses with a start. He shot up straight, his legs falling out in front of him, he huffed and puffed trying to catch his breath. Jean kept his hold on him as he took a few deep breaths. Mana looked back at Jean.

"It happened again, didn't it?"

"I'm sorry you had go through that again."

Mana sighed and fell back into Jean's chest and just sat there. He felt exhausted mentally. He felt Jean's hands on his shoulders, rubbing and massaging them. His shoulders felt like they were in knots.

"You don't have to do that."

"I want to, you're stressed out. It's the least I can do. Besides, we still have a few hours until we reach stable grounds and even longer until we are back in demon kingdom territory. It may just help to pass the time."

"Ah, so I give you something to do then?"

"I wouldn't exactly word it like that, but yes, in a way."

Mana giggled and leaned his head back and looked up at Jean. "I envy you."

Jean raised an eyebrow at his friend. He stopped massaging Mana's shoulders and lowered his hands to his sides. "Why is that?"

Mana smiled placed his hand on Jean's. "You don't hold the same pain I do. You don't constantly get reminded of those you lost. You are you and you can focus on your future. I am constantly reminded of the past. That is why I envy you."

Jean felt Mana's back on his chest and their fingers entangling. He didn't know just why Mana was doing this, but he didn't really mind it too much.

"Why envy me? Your past may have been tragic at one point, but I bet there were some good points. Don't let that one moment in your life stop you. I'm nothing to envy."

Mana rolled his eyes. "I don't envy you only for your past, I don't know everything about that. Your childhood. Your parents. I know nothing about that. I envy you because you can handle your past and take another step forward. That is why I envy you. I can't seem to let go. Even if I wanted to."

"You're a fool." Mana blinked. Jean continued. "You have managed to move forward. You continue to take care of others. You accepted me...eventually. You are amazing with everything you do. You've even managed to learn to smile again."

"It's all because of King Yuri. He's made everything so much more peaceful in such a short time. He's amazing."

"So, why envy someone when you can smile?"

Mana didn't say anything. He felt his shoulders loosen and a smile etched itself onto his face. "Smile?" He looked up at Jean again and showed off that beautiful smile to him. "You're right. Thank you."

Jean nodded. "Good, now come on. We have to change their gauze."

Mana nodded back and crawled over to one of the wooden boxes and grabbed a fresh roll of gauze and tossed it over to Jean. "Get to it."

"You too."

It was night fall at Blood Pledge castle. The guards were stationed at the gates and all around the kingdom to make sure nothing else happens. Its been six days and six nights since their king has been in the castle. The towns people know this and are getting suspicious about what was going on.

Gisela stood on the balcony of her room. She watched from above as the soldiers did their job correctly, guarding the premises. She took pride in her soldiers. To see them do their very best while their king is away is truly inspiring.

She looked up at the sky, the moon shined down on her. Wanting nothing more than to find her king, she has had many sleepless nights. The thought of his majesty out there doing who knows what caused her fear, enough to make sleep a distant thing of the past. No matter how much she tried, she could not succumb to it.

A knock at the door alerted Gisela that someone has come to speak to her. She turned around and walked over to the door. Her hair bounced and waved as she walked since it was down at the moment. She answered the door and was surprised to see that it was Greta at the door. She blinked. Greta raised her arm up and Gisela saw that she was holding a small rolled up message. Small enough for a dove to carry.

"What is that you're holding, Lady Greta?"

"It's a message. I got it from one of the guards on my way back to Yuri's room. He said he was going to see you, so I took it instead. I wanted to come and talk to you anyways."

Gisela stepped aside and let Greta inside her room and she shut the door. Greta sat down on Gisela's bed and Gisela sat down beside her. Greta handed her the message and Gisela unraveled the string holding it closed and read it to herself in silence.

Greta sat beside her, anticipating the news that Gisela would share with her as soon as she got a clear understanding. She watched as Gisela's hands began to shake. Tears collected in her eyelids. The message crumpling in her fingertips, she placed it in front of her face and she cried. Tears of joy!

"Miss Gisela, what's the matter?"

Gisela smiled at Greta, ignoring the tears as they fell. "You know that Yuri has been found, right?" Greta nodded. "Well, Lord Gwendal and his men are nearing the castle, it would still be a little while until they reach us, but they need me to come down to the clinic a few miles away from here. They need my healing power."

"And you're happy about that?" Greta asked.

Gisela nodded. Her smile so big it hurt her cheeks. "It means they're still alive. It means they're coming home."

Greta felt a big smile grace her lips as she heard that. She felt tears of her own gathering in her eyelids at the thought of seeing her fathers again.

Gisela stood up from the bed and ran over to the balcony of her room. "You down there." One of the guards walking by looked up at the balcony and saw Gisela. He stopped and saluted her. "Prepare me a horse immediately. It's very urgent."

The guard asked no questions and quickly headed over to the stables to ready a horse. Gisela walked back into her room and over to closet to grab a fresh outfit.

"I must get ready. Please, Lady Greta, head back to your room and wait there. You should get ready for bed."

Greta shook her head. "Please, take me with you."

Gisela stopped as she unzipped the back of her outfit and looked at Greta. "Lady Greta?"

"Please," Greta stood up from the bed and bowed to Gisela, begging her to allow her to come along. "I haven't seen Yuri or Wolfram in so long. I need to see them."

Gisela sighed and then smiled at Greta. "Very well, but you must get dressed. Quickly!"

Greta nodded in appreciation and quickly left the room and headed back to Yuri's to change. Gisela took a deep breath and quickly began to change out of her night attire and back into her day wear.

It was late in the night when Gwendal's Elite Force made it to the clinic in the human country outside of demon territory. Jean and Mana have already exited the medical wagon. They just needed two more of their comrades to help them take his majesty and Wolfram inside the clinic. They needed two people for each stretcher.

Gwendal stood in front of clinic and watched as everything was taken care of. He watched as Wolfram and King Yuri were carefully taken out of the wagon, one by one. With doctors already on standby to help, Gwendal was confident that everything would be okay. He already sent word out to Gisela, he just hoped she has received it and is on her way here. If she has already received it, she should be arriving soon.

"Lord Gwendal?" Gwendal looked back as one of the head doctors came out to greet him. "Once we get King Yuri into surgery, it should take a few hours. An arrow to the head is extremely dangerous. Anything can happen so we will be prepared for anything. As for Wolfram, I see nothing that a simple healer can't fix. However, we have nurses on stand by in his room to help with his burns. He'll be in the burn victim unit." Gwendal nodded and the doctor continued. "Once that healer you mentioned gets here, everything will go by much smoother. We may need her help in this surgery if she gets here fast enough. Her healing abilites could help with getting the arrow out smoothly."

"She should be arriving any minute. I'm sure by the time you have his majesty prepped, she'll be ready to aid you."

The doctor bowed to Gwendal and headed back inside. Gwendal watched as Yuri and Wolfram were carried inside. He got a quick glance at the progress that Jean and Mana made and saw that they did fairly well in the conditions they had to endure.

"Gwendal~!" Gwendal heard his voice being called. It was faint but it was still audible. He looked around in the forest. It sounded all too familiar. "Gwendal~!"

Gwendal saw a horse making its way towards the clinic. He saw Gisela, her green hair was the first thing he recognized. However, it wasn't Gisela's voice that he heard though. The voice was much higher, more full of childish charisma.

When the horse got closer to the clinic, he was able to see that she was not alone. Arms wrapped around her waist, small child size arms. Gisela came to a stop in front of Gwendal and she could immediately see the anger in his eyes.

"Lord Gwendal, is something the matter?"

Gwendal clenched his fists. "Why did you bring Lady Greta along? She will only get in the way."

Gisela glared back at Gwendal. "Lady Greta is here to help. Don't say such things to her. She asked to come and I brough her along."

"I promise I won't get in the way. I just really miss Yuri and Wolfram. Please understand Gwendal."

Gwendal looked into the eyes of Greta and saw the longing in those eyes, the longing to see her fathers again. Gwendal knew that he couldn't stop her. She was already here. She had a right to see them as anyone else. Gwendal sighed and held out a hand.

"Very well, but do us and everyone inside that clinic a favor and please stay quiet and calm. There are other patients in this hospital that are trying to get some sleep. You should do the same since their treatments are going to take a while."

Greta smiled and jumped into Gwendal's arms. "Thank you, Gwendal."

Gwendal smiled and walked inside with Greta. Gisela had one of Gwendal's men take care of her horse and she followed them inside.

Once inside, Gisela was whisked away by one of the other doctors, asking her to follow along so that she could be prepped as well for surgery. Gisela understood and listened to everything she said.

Gwendal brought Greta back to the waiting room and sat her down. Gwendal had one of his men fetch her a cup of milk to help her relax. As they sat down, Greta with her milk in hand, Gwendal tried his best to talk to her.

"Yuri and Wolfram are going to be fine, right?"

Gwendal nodded. "I'm sure they'll be fine. Let the doctors are taking care of it."

Greta took a sip of her milk. "Did Yuri say anything when you found him?"

Gwendal shook his head. "I'm afraid not. He was already unconscious when we found him. He hasn't woken up once since then." Gwendal has yet to tell Greta about the Wincott poison. He didn't want to worry her. She's seen what it can do after Gunter was infused with it and was controlled by the puppet. She didn't want Greta to automatically assume that Yuri and Wolfram will be placed inside puppets as well. That wasn't how the poison worked.

"Here." Greta raised her head as Gwendal grabbed the hilt of his sword and removed something off from it and placed his fisted hand over Greta's open ones. He placed the small object in her hands and closed them up. Greta placed her now closed hands in front of her and opened them up to see what it was. She smiled bright as she held the cute object by its string. "It was a present from Yuri. He gave that to me a while back. It may keep you busy for a while."

"Cute! It's so cute!" Greta squealed as she played with the small dolphin toy. She smiled and giggled as happily as can be. Gwendal gave a small smile as he watched her play. "So, Yuri gave this to you? It's really cute."

"Yes, he did. He gave it to me when he first became king."

Greta examined the dolphin and pulled the string. A smile never once leaving her face. "Thank you, Gwendal."

"Anything for you, Lady Greta."

Greta gave Gwendal a hug and held him as tight as she could. Gwendal hugged her back. She was so happy. She hasn't smiled this much since she last saw her fathers. She wanted nothing more than to see them again. She pulled away from Gwendal and leaned against him as she played with the dolphin.

"Wake up soon, Yuri, Wolfram." Greta smiled at the dolphin and placed it over her heart.

Gwendal looked out the window of the clinic, she saw his mother, Lord Shouri and his Eminence. They were making their way inside as well. Murata was trying to keep Shouri calm. He probably didn't want him to make a fool of himself, trying to demand to see his brother.

Gwendal looked back down at Greta to see that she was fast asleep. Her fingers barely hanging on to the dolphin, the ring just centimeters from falling off her fingertips. Gwendal carefully stood up and picked her up. He then left to go and find a spare room to put her in to let her get some sleep.

Sleep that was clear she hasn't had in a while.
