31. Banana Bread

Roy had always loved banana bread; it had been his favorite food since he was a young child. The sweet taste of the overly ripe bananas was his favorite part, and the aroma of the bread as it baked in the oven, always made his mouth water.

Marth always smiled whenever he spotted Roy munching on this bread, and since it was Roy's birthday today, he decided to make a surprise lunch for him. He gathered up the needed supplies for this sweet treat and rushed into the kitchen. Smiling, he grabbed a mixing bowl and started working on the recipe.

He peeled three ripe bananas and placed them in the bowl, mashing them into a thick pulp with a fork. Grabbing some melted butter that he'd prepared earlier, he quickly stirred it in with the bananas. After a few minutes, he took the baking soda and salt, and he mixed them in with the wet ingredients. He then cracked an egg in the bowl, beating it into the mixture, and throwing the empty shell away. Stirring in the sugar, vanilla extract, and the flour, he hummed a tune to himself as he mixed all of the ingredients together.

When everything was thoroughly combined, he poured the batter into a loaf pan and placed it into the stone oven. Sitting on a chair beside it, he watched the fire do its job.

Roy's going to love this! I'm sure of it! he thought.

As he watched the gooey mixture begin to solidify, he slowly closed his eyes and fell asleep…

Marth awoke when he smelled something burning. Cracking one eye open, he gasped when he saw black smoke rising out of the oven. Inside, the bread was charred beyond recognition.

OH DAMN OH DAMN OH DAMN! he thought, as he quickly grabbed some oven mitts and yanked the bread out of the oven.

The bread smelled burnt, and it was definitely not edible.

"…Oh no…" Marth gulped.

"Marth?"

Marth yelped when he heard a voice from behind him, and he turned to see Roy. "Ah! Roy…" he said, shaking slightly and his face red.

"What's wrong? What's that smell?" his redheaded friend asked.

"I…" Marth sighed. "I was trying to make some banana bread for you, but…" He looked down at the burnt loaf. "I messed up."

Roy, to Marth's surprise, simply smiled. "It's all right."

"You're not mad at me?" Marth asked.

"Of course not! You tried your best, and it's the thought that counts," Roy spoke in a cheerful tone.

Marth smiled. "Thank you Roy."

Roy hugged him. "If you want, we could buy some banana bread at the bakery."

Marth raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure?"

Roy nodded as he let him go. "I have the gold to buy some. I'll buy you a loaf as well."

Marth nodded, his smile growing wider. "Thanks Roy."

Although the surprise Marth attempted to make was ruined, he was glad that he at least tried, and in the end, Roy still got his banana bread.
