Chapter 14: What Are We?
Emily POV
"Mmmm," Maya purrs while she cuddles into me.
"Good morning," I say to her sounds of contentment.
She stretches her slender toned arms and snuggles deeper into me. I'm in heaven!
"Did you sleep well?" She asks as her head tilts back so she can see my face all aglow. And it is a glowing!
"Yeah, I did. It was kinda cold last night so it was nice to have some extra body heat." Wow, did I really just say that? I'm feeling more and more comfortable with me when I'm with Maya!
"Yes it was, and now I don't want to get up. I could cuddle with you all day," she sighs. And I would let you. I live for the days we can be in each other's arms whenever we want to…
"Well, maybe we should get up. Spencer and Hanna will be up soon and I don't want either of them being all 'aww, look at the two of you all comfy and cozy'."
"But we kind of are, aren't we?" She says but really I think she just wants to make sure I realize that's exactly what we are. Comfy and cozy…two more ways to describe us!
"Yeah but…"
Maya cuts me off, "But you're not ready for everyone to know. I get it."
"Does that bother you? That I'm not ready." I just got these knots in my stomach and they're not the good kind.
"Oh Em, I know what those lips are capable of so they won't hear it from me," she kisses the tip of my nose and brushes her lips against mine as she gets up. "I'm gonna take a shower." And she winks! And I die!
I stretch my entire body with a big smirky smile on my face. The things Maya and I are gonna do behind closed doors, hidden from the rest of the world! I'm excited but I'm a little scared too. Yeah I kissed Ben a lot but I didn't feel those sexual things you're supposed to feel. I definitely feel them with Maya. I'm just afraid to take any step but kissing with her. She's so sure of herself. I don't want to be that girl who gets her so sexually charged up that she turns to someone else to get what she needs. Oh god, please don't make me that girl!
Since I'm up I decide to straighten out the room and rinse out the beer bottles so they don't stink up the place. I must be daydreaming about you know who because I don't hear the footsteps behind me and when her hands touch my sides I let out a startled, "Huh," matched with a huge ass smile. Her hands sneak around my waist slowly and carefully as her fingertips slip under my shirt. Then she tests me to see if I will push her hands away by slipping both hands under it and gently caressing me just below my breasts. Her touches are so delicate. There's no way I'm going to push her away!
My head crooks to the side as her chin settles into the curve of my neck, "So you're okay with this?" she asks all breathy and she smells so good!
"Oh yeah, I'm okay with it. You're relaxing me," I say.
"Really," she skips her lips from my neck to my earlobe, "I was hoping I was exciting you." Wait! What!
My eyes get all heavy and my body feels like a wet noodle! What should I say?
"Believe me you excite me with just a wink and a smile." Huh! What! Oh my god! Emily stop talking!
"Do I now," she kisses my neck then smacks my bottom!
"Hey! What was that for!" I act all annoyed but I'm so not! I liked it cuz it was all in fun!
"It was to tell you to move it along. Go take your shower before Spencer and Hanna wake up. Then we'll walk over to Spencer's house and make some coffee."
I turn my body and lean against the sink, "I could definitely use some coffee." And I could swear Maya says under her breath, "That's not all you could definitely use." Damn!
I inadvertently lick my lips as I scan her bare feet to her short jean shorts to her tight tank which fits snuggly over her bikini. Only this time when she speaks I can hear her as clear as day, "It looks like someone agrees with me." Head tilt. Wink. Smile. Screwed.
I need to get out of here! "I think I'll take that shower now."
"Good idea. I'll finish up what you were doing and then we can go when you're done," she stands at the sink with her back to me.
"I won't take long," I say.
She peers over her shoulder to say, "I'm not going anywhere." I feel like I'm in a Disney movie and the little cartoon animals are gonna come in from outside and start singing!
And then I swear she eye sexes me. I think it's just something she does. It's like involuntary and I love it!
I stand under the hot steamy shower lathering my body with the scent of lavender. I close my eyes as my hands travel all over my naked self. I soap up my hair and let the spray of hot water rinse it away. I glide my hands over my shoulders, over my breasts which feel full and excited, over my belly, over my navel and I can't resist slipping my hand between my legs. Images of Maya dance through my head as I sweep my fingers back and forth over my secret place, knowing one day, when I'm ready, Maya will be the one to unlock my secrets and all of my desires from within…
I'm shaken out of my thoughts by a rap on the door, "Hey Em, it's Hanna, I really have to pee."
"Just a sec, I'm getting out of the shower now. Give me two minutes!"
"Fine. Two minutes but hurry up!"
Damn it! Why did she have to ruin my moment! Ugh, now I have to hurry up and dry off and I can still feel a throbbing down there! Heehee!
I'm all dried off and dressed in short shorts and a tank top with my bikini on underneath since we'll be going to the pool later. And Maya will be putting sunscreen on me…Wait…Hold that thought! We'll be in front of everyone! Forget it! I'll put it on myself before we leave! Phew! I just avoided a possibly huge embarrassment! And my unofficial coming out!
When I leave the bathroom, Hanna races passed me. I guess she really did have to pee! God she makes me laugh!
I continue on down the hallway walking into Maya space with a delightful smile, "Oh hey Spencer I didn't realize you were up," I say with a hint of disappointment as my alone time with Maya is officially over for the day.
"Yep. Did you two sleep okay?" she asks groggily.
"I don't know about Emily but I slept like a baby," Maya says sounding refreshed. And I held my baby and I slept like one too! Oh my gosh I sound so corny! I can't help it! I like her so much! Actually I…
My thoughts are interrupted by Maya, "Hey Spencer's gonna jump in the shower and she said there's no good kind of coffee at her house so I said you and I would go out and get coffees for everyone." Alone time is on again! YAY! Happy happy face!
"Thanks for doing that guys. My parents left all the eww flavors and I forgot to buy some when I was out yesterday. Anyway, hopefully both Hanna and I will be showered by the time you get back," Spencer says wanting to stick to our schedule so we can get to the pool and find chairs for everyone. I don't mind sharing a chair! Oh wait! Yes I do! Public pool! Never mind…
"Sounds good," I say. But actually it sounds great! Better than great! It sounds just the two of us!
Maya and I leave for our morning coffee shop rendezvous. Yes I said rendezvous, why not? It sounds more romantic that way…
Hanna POV
"Psst, Spencer, are they gone?" I try to get her attention in case they're still here.
"Hanna, what are you doing? Why are you hiding?" She says in a normal tone of voice so I'm guessing the coast is clear.
I walk over to Spencer and sit on the couch with her, "I've been dying for them to leave!"
"Why? What's got you all giddy this morning?"
"Last night I had to pee."
"Everyone has to pee in the middle of the night," Spencer can't help intellectualizing my pee break!
"Spencer! Just listen!"
"Okay, okay! What is up with you?" she looks at me curiously.
"I heard giggling so I snuck down the hall to see what was going on."
"You snuck? You couldn't just walk over there and say, 'Hey what're you guys giggling about?'"
"Spencer! Who's telling this story?!"
"Fine, go on."
"I will! Thank you very much! So I peeked around the corner and saw Maya kiss Emily on the lips and Emily kiss Maya on the lips and then Maya snuggled into Emily!"
"So."
"So! Are you kidding me! Emily kissed a girl! Emily kissed Maya!" I'm super excited and I have no idea why! And I have the urge to start singing Katy Perry songs!
"Were they saying good night to each other?" Leave it to Spencer to Debbie Downer me.
"Yes."
"Then it was nothing. Maya does that all the time," she shrugs it off but how can she!
"You mean she kissed you too?"
"Sure. I think it's cute. It's what makes Maya who she is."
"A lesbian!"
"No Hanna. I told you she's pansexual. She's just very cuddly."
"I don't know Spencer."
"You're reading into things Hanna. It was a simple peck on the lips. Even you and I do that on occasion."
"Yeah when we're cocked off our asses!"
"Hanna, seriously, it's nothing. Anyway Emily isn't gay."
"Well maybe dating Ben turned her gay."
"It doesn't work that way Hanna," She gets up to shower.
"Spencer, she broke up with Ben after almost a year. I bet she realized she didn't like him as much as he liked her cuz he's a guy!"
"Hanna, stop Jessica Fletchering Emily's love life. She's not gay. I think she's just so glad to be around her girlfriends after being in Texas all summer with her parents. Maya is, well, there's no one quite like her that we know and I think Emily likes the excitement she brings to the group."
"What you're saying makes perfect sense but…"
"But nothing, I'm showering now. We'll talk later," she basically shrugs everything off!
"Fine." I cross my arms over my chest and quietly say, "I guess I'll just Jessica Fletcher them myself…"
Emily POV
On the way to The Grind…
"So are you excited about seeing everyone from school later?" Maya asks warming me up with some small talk.
"Not really."
"Why not?"
"I've never really been a part of the scene without Ben so I'm not sure how people are going to react towards me. That's another reason why I'm not anxious to come out," I say sincerely.
"I can see that. But now you have me to be your strength when you need it," she looks at me quickly and winks. I melt.
"Maya, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"What are we?"
She crinkles her forehead, "What do you mean?"
"Are you my girlfriend and am I yours?" Oh no why did I have to ask her that!
"Do you want to be?"
"Maya, I think you already know that I do."
"I already feel like we are," she reaches over and squeezes my knee. All tingles!
"You do?" I answer so surprised and elated at the same time!
"Yeah, I do. Well, privately anyway. I like the way you make me feel too Ems." Ems? She called me Ems! I think I'm totally blushing!
"Then what are we when we're in public?"
"Well, since we're playing it your way, we're just friends. So if someone gets flirty with me, there's not much you can do unless you want people to know about us. Do you get what I'm saying?"
"Yes but I don't like it."
"But they're your rules," she quickly points out.
She's right. I made up the rules when I decided I wasn't ready. I can't get mad that people flirt with her and she flirts back. I don't know what I'm so afraid of with Maya by my side. Oh right. My parents. Sad face.
Maya parks the car and already people are coming up to us but mostly to Maya. I guess she made some friends over the summer.
I need to stop this crowd from gathering around her, "Hey Maya, we really should get going. Spencer and Hanna are waiting for us and Hanna's a bear without her morning caffeine."
"Sure Em, I'll catch up." Did she just blow me off for whoever those people are?
I pretty much storm into the coffee shop, miserably place our orders and wait for my name to be called.
A few minutes later, which seems like forever, Maya finally walks in like as if nothing even happened.
She's looking around the room for me and when she sees me she nods to me and joins me.
"Wow, everyone's so nice to me." Cuz they want you.
"That's good. I was never much into socializing even when I dated Ben."
"Is that all it was?" So caught.
"What do you mean?" I play innocent.
"Em, that's what it's going to be like every day at school. I told you in the car it would."
"I still don't know what you're getting at." Yes I do.
"Emily! You're orders up!" The barista yells out my name.
"I'll be right back."
And no sooner do I get up and Maya is flocked with people again. The girls are the worst! They might as well be talking with their pussies cuz that's what they're shoving at her!
"Maya, we're all set. We should go." I know she's right but I don't like how it makes me feel!
"Sorry ladies, but I need to jet. My friend likes to stay on schedule."
"Sounds boring," one of the pussies says.
They all laugh.
"But I really have to go."
As we walk out the door I hear, "Hey Maya are you going to the pool today?"
She turns slightly and answers, "Yeah I'll see you there." I'll see you there! What the fuck!
I get in the car with a pout on my face cuz I'm pissed. I didn't like that. I didn't like that one bit.
Maya drives away, "Em, it's better you go through it now."
"Is it?"
"I think so. This is what not dating in public is going to be like. And there's nothing you can do about it."
"Well, do you think you could curb your flirting?"
"Em, I'm just being me. Are you asking me to not be who I am?"
"No, I would never ask you do that. It's just hard. It's harder than I imagined." I feel defeated.
"I just needed you to see it."
"I saw it alright." My girlfriend isn't my girlfriend in public so I can't say or do squat about other people's attention towards her.
We're stopped at a red light. She reaches for my chin so I'll look at her, "I said I was with you. I wouldn't have said it if I didn't mean it. I'm not gonna hook up with anyone. But they might think they can hook up with me because I don't have a," she finger quotes, "girlfriend." She's with me. Sigh of relief face!
"This still sucks."
The light turns green and both her hands are now on the steering wheel.
"For now it does but maybe you need to figure out why you're so afraid. I think you should tell Spencer and Hanna. Practice with them. Then you'll feel more confident to talk with your parents."
"I will. But not today."
"It doesn't have to be today but it does have to be some day."
"I'll even practice with you. I'll pretend to be Spencer and Hanna and react the way I think they would react to the news."
"This I gotta see." I'm starting to feel my smile again!
She pulls into Spencer's driveway and turns off the engine.
"Then we'll find some time for you to do it, okay?"
"You really are a great girlfriend."
"I'm a great 'secret' girlfriend and I'm a great 'girlfriend' girlfriend." Yes you are! "And hopefully you'll figure that out sooner rather than later," she removes her seatbelt and leans slowly towards me. Her hand cups my face, she draws me closer to her closing her eyes as do I and she kisses me sweetly and longingly. We open our eyes, our faces so close and we smile and she says, "Soon baby, soon."
Oh Maya please wait for me for as long as it takes for me be your 'girlfriend' girlfriend…
