"Really? What is it?" I have no idea what she's about to tell me.
"Alison is taking you back with her."
"What?"
Alison mouths, "I thought you knew."
"It's all set. You're going to private school in California. You leave with Alison the day after tomorrow."
This can't be happening! California?! The day after tomorrow?! This can't be happening!
Noooooo!
Maya!
Chapter 25: The Decision is Made
Maya POV
"What are you talking about Mother!" I never call her that but it seems fitting!
"I need you in California."
She won't even look at me.
Alison ahems feeling extremely uncomfortable, "Ya know what, I'm just gonna go upstairs."
"If you wouldn't mind, Alison, can you get Emily's toiletries together?"
"Umm, sure," she looks at me and shrugs.
"You don't have to Alison because I'm not going anywhere!" I march into the living room.
"Emily."
"Mom! You're ruining everything!" This can't be happening!
"Me?"
"You know I like Maya. You know I'm gay. And just when I finally say it out loud you want to ship me off to California!" I heave at her!
"It's for your own good," she crosses her arms like that's going to make a difference!
"Does dad know?" I'm using the father daughter card.
"Yes."
"I don't believe it. He's letting this happen?" No fucking way face!
"We agreed that you would attend school with Alison for the rest of the semester and if you don't like it you can go back to Rosewood."
"Wait, that's why dad agreed to this? He thinks you're going to let me choose! But you're not are you!"
"He made it clear it was your choice to stay or not. I think two months is the perfect amount of time to set things straight."
"More like set ME straight!"
"It's not like that Emily."
"How can it be? I mean," I lower my voice because I'm not that callous, "you're gay too."
"I'm not," she gives me the death stare.
"You are. You're having an affair with Noel Kahn's mom. Oh my god! It doesn't even sound right when it comes out of my mouth."
"Because it isn't."
I sit down on the couch with my face in my hands sliding my hands up and down my face as if to erase all this craziness. I let one hand drop to my knee while the other runs through my hair.
"Then what is it mom. What are you and Natalie doing?"
"Emily, I—I really don't know."
"But I think you do."
She sits down next to me and starts crying. Shit.
"Mom, I mean, how did you expect me to react?" I furrow my brows at her.
"I know. I went about this in all the wrong ways. I just felt like I had to be the parent and make you go," she laces her fingers but not to pray, to help her hold it together.
"But you see how that's working for you."
She wipes the tears from her face and says, "Look Emily, I can't help but wonder if I did this to you?"
"Did this to me?" Now I'm really confused!
"Made you gay."
I grab my hair with my fingers and then slouch into the couch.
"You can't make someone gay."
"How do you know? How do you know that for sure? I really like Natalie. She makes me laugh. We do everything together just like your father and I used to," with her elbows on her knees and her fingers still laced, she points her index fingers to the ceiling tapping them against her lips.
"Dad's in a war mom."
"And I feel horrible about that. Things happen that you never expect to happen," now she rests her cheek against her extended fingers.
"I know. It happened when I met Maya. She confirmed it. I knew I was attracted to girls but Maya got me to admit it. And it felt really good to say it out loud. But that's no reason to send me away."
"Emily, I need some space too."
"What?"
"Please go to California. I'm not asking anymore. I'm begging you to. I need to figure this thing out with Natalie. Then when you come home for winter break, I'll have clarity. At least I hope I will."
"Mom, are you asking me to go to California because you just found out I'm gay or because you think you're gay too."
"I—I don't know. Please Emily. Please do this for me." Fuck!
"The day after tomorrow?"
"Yes."
"Okay." I can't believe I just said that!
Her posture straightens up, "Really, you'll go?"
"Mom, you need to figure this out. Maya will still be here in December." At least I hope she will. Please Maya, please wait for me!
"Thank you Emily."
"But mom."
"Yes."
"I'm going to see Maya before I leave. Please don't interfere or I won't go."
"Fair enough," she smiles through more tears.
I get up to go to my room.
"Emily."
"Yeah."
"Do you think I can hug my daughter?"
"Sure."
She gets up and hugs me like she's never going to see me again or maybe like she's never going to see her Emily again…
When I go upstairs to my room Alison is on my bed talking on her cell phone. She quickly says good bye and waits for me to say something…
"Well."
"I'm going to California." Did I just say that out loud?
"Really!" she jumps off the bed and leaps into my arms hugging me for dear life. "I'm so happy! This is going to be great!"
I gently pull away from her embrace and plop face down on the bed. I hug my pillows and sigh.
"It's not that bad Emily."
"Did you hear what we were talking about?"
"Hell yeah! I was at the top of the stairs the whole time then I called Hanna and she filled me in."
"That was fast," I snicker.
"A lot happened while I was away," her voice turns soothing.
"Yes it did."
"So is there anything you want to tell me?" She gently pushes.
I turn over still clutching my pillow and say, "Alison, I'm gay. Happy now."
"Emily, don't. It's not like that. I'm so thrilled for you, that you can be who you were meant to be," she says more supportively than I was expecting.
"Did you know?" I ask.
"Not really. I just thought you were shy and conservative."
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah. I had no reason to doubt your relationship with Ben. But now I get it."
"Get what?"
"Why you love Beyoncé so much!"
She laughs and I chuck my pillow at her. And we end up having an impromptu pillow fight, one that I desperately need!
We collapse on my bed laughing so hard my sides hurt but then reality sets in.
"Alison."
"Yeah."
"I leave Rosewood the day after tomorrow. I leave Spencer and Hanna the day after tomorrow. I leave Maya the day after tomorrow."
"I know. I can't even imagine what that's going to be like for you, the Maya part anyway," she sounds saddened for me.
"She's amazing," I smile just thinking about her. "She's so patient and kind. She's fun and funny. She really cares about me. And I care so much about her." I love her.
"Do you love her?" She asks point blank.
"Yeah, I think I do," I know I'm blushing uncontrollably but it's true. I do love her.
Alison rolls onto her side propping herself up on her elbow.
"I think you and Maya deserve the next day and a half of alone time."
"Really."
"Yes really. Is your mom going to let you say good bye?"
"She said she is."
"Well, then, I'll go with you and head over to Spencer's so you and Maya can do what you need to do," she winks.
"Cute Alison."
"Hey, I wouldn't waste a second of my good bye. I'd be all over her."
"Would you now?" I eye her.
"I got a good look, she's smokin' hot! Damn Emily, from one hottie to another!"
"Stop!"
"Em, she's hot!"
"Don't say that cuz then all I'm going to do in California is worry about who's checking out her hotness!" Worry face.
"Awww, come here."
Alison hugs me and it feels good to be held by a friend. Sometimes a friend is all you need to get through the worst of whatever it is you need to get through. I can't believe this is happening but if it helps my mother come to her senses, whichever choice she makes, then I need to do this for her.
"Oh, by the way, you better call Maya tonight."
"What? Why?"
"Cuz I kind of told Hanna what's going on so you know she told everyone else…"
"Including Maya."
"Exactly."
I make the call…
"Hello?"
"Maya, it's me."
"Hey."
"Hey."
"So."
"So, you heard didn't you?"
"Heard what?"
"You're gonna make me say it?"
"Oh yeah."
"My mother's big surprise is to send me off to California because I like you. And because she likes Natalie."
"And you're going?"
"I have to. I have to let her figure this out."
"Emily, can't she figure it out with you here?"
"I don't know. But I do know I need for her to decide. The good news is I come home in two months. And I get to decide if I want to stay in California or come back to Rosewood."
"That's going to be a touch choice."
"Why?"
"Because I didn't want to leave California. But then I met you and I couldn't imagine going back."
"Maya. I'm not going to meet anyone there. I'm coming back for you."
"Hmm, sounds so romantic," she purrs. Oh god that purr!
"It kinda is." Blushing smiley face!
"Emily, there's always a 'what if'. What if you really like it there?"
"It's a school. It's not you. I know my choice. I've already made it."
"Will I get to see you?"
"You can have me for a full day and a half if you want."
"If I want, hmmm…"
"Maya!"
She's giggling and then she turns quite serious.
"Yes, I want." Smiley face kissing heart symbol!
The next day…
Alison and I walk up the steps to Maya's front door. She wants to see what the St. Germain's have done with her old house. I'm okay with it because I'm kind of nervous to find out what Maya really meant when she said 'I want.' I bite my lower lip trying desperately not to smile too excitedly in front of Alison. This could be it. But am I ready for it…
Maya opens the door.
"Hey Maya, I'm Alison, we briefly met at the dance. I was hoping I could see the house I used to live in," she looks at me and then at Maya, "if that's okay?"
"Sure, come in. Sorry about the other night but Emily and I have had some miscommunications and I thought you were one of them," she freely admits.
We walk in and Alison does her thing complimenting the interior design, being her charming self. Maya leads us to her room and that's when my heart begins to thump, thump, thump…
"Well, here it is-my room. Be my guest," she stands aside so Alison can go in first.
"Thank you Maya, you're being a gracious hostess," I wink.
"Mmmm, are you flirting with me Miss Fields?" She tickles my earlobe with her nose then whispers, "How very brave of you…" And she heads into her room leaving me speechless and defenseless.
"Maya, it looks great. You have your own style and it really works in this space. I love the dark colors against the light walls. It's all so very dramatic. It suits you," she complements genuinely.
"It does suit her. It brings out the musician in her," I add.
"Cello?"
"Yes."
"It's a beautiful sounding instrument."
"You should hear her play. It takes you to another place, a magical place," I almost forget Alison is still in the room.
"Can I hear you play?" She asks and I look at her like 'really, you need to leave'.
"Sure. I don't see why not," she shrugs.
She gets the hint, "But for now I'll leave you two to say your good byes. It was nice meeting you and don't you worry Maya, I'll take good care of her."
"Not too good Alison," she raises an eyebrow at her.
"She's all yours and I mean that," she says as she leaves us alone.
Maya closes the door and walks up to me. I'm about to say something but she doesn't give me the chance…
She grabs my waist. She pulls me closer to her body. She looks into my eyes. She looks at my lips while she's biting hers. She looks back at my eyes again. She gently takes my face in her hands. She slowly leans in and she kisses me…
She teases me with the tip of her tongue running it along my bottom lip. It feels so sensuous with a bit of a tickle! She resumes exploring by gently and slowly kissing it and then switches to my top pouty lip as she calls it. I'm expecting a full kiss when she pauses; I'm breathing so fast with anticipation waiting for her lips again! She can feel my anxiousness and takes full advantage slipping her hand past my cheek, pressing my head towards her, falling onto her mouth fully feeling her tongue against mine! My body almost collapsing from her touch…
She switches it up between sweet and sexy, tugging ever so slightly on my bottom lip and pulling it towards her before letting it go, only to return for another full sensuous kiss! The pace of sweet and gentle mixed with sexy and aggressive makes me erupt with excitement for what lies ahead. She pulls away letting my eyelids grow heavy and I can't stop thinking for a second about how much I want her! And just when I think we'll never kiss again, she leans in for more! She's driving me wild and I'm not sure we can ever turn back!
But do I need to turn back…
