Uhura and the Boys' Club
"I don't know why I'm sitting here upset," Uhura confessed, "this is my fault."
Lieutenant Pak Soo-yee and Dr. Carol Marcus lounged in Uhura's quarters sympathizing with their frustrated friend.
Kirk hired Pak to solve two problems:
Problem #1 - Spock's ability to keep up with his Captain's wanderlust finally buckled - he couldn't get the geology analyses done fast enough to satisfy Kirk or Starfleet.
Problem #2 - Uhura's patience with Spock's workload became a loud, running commentary after hours in Kirk's quarters. Off-duty, she lambasted Kirk over his over-use of Spock. After accusing him of trying to burn out his duty-driven first officer she landed a low blow: she accused Kirk of using Spock's workload to spend more time with her son - Kirk's favorite playmate - Grayson. Then she threatened Kirk: if he didn't find a way to get Spock more time off she would take a job at the Academy and take her family with her.
It took more time than Kirk intended to find a chink in his best friend's armor. But when the Geology department's efficiency statistics continued to trend downward (from 99.87% to 98.63%), Kirk had a reason to make the changes he believed would keep the S'chn T'gai's on board the Enterprise.
Pak, a Ph.D geologist and geo-physicist, took over the undermanned department from Spock and kept it running at top efficiency with a light but steady touch.
While Kirk's initiatives resulted in a net gain for the Enterprise, one unintended consequence did occur -
Kirk hurt his Vulcan first officer's feelings. Badly.
