I take her hand, "I wish you could just drive away somewhere so we could be alone."
"I will. Another time. Kiss me baby."
And I do, over and over until our foreheads meet and she kisses the top of my head.
"I'm just a phone call away."
I shake my head. We kiss. And I open the door hopping out of the car making my way to my front door.
I stop and turn watching her drive away wishing I was with her…
I take a breath as I grasp the door knob to let myself in the house. And as I close the door and start taking off my coat I hear my parents arguing in the next room. My dad really is home! But this isn't at all how I expected to be greeted….
Chapter 34: The Talk
Emily POV
"Ahem," I clear my throat hoping to get their attention. It feels awkward walking into a room with my parents arguing. Which makes me wonder, what could they be so passionately arguing about so close to my birthday and Christmas?
"Oh honey you're home," my mom walks over to me pulling me into an awkward embrace. There's that word again!
When we stop hugging I rush over to my dad hugging him for dear life. I miss him so! But he's here now and everything just feels better, feels right when he's around.
"I'm so happy you're here dad! I miss you even more being out in California."
"How is California by the way?" he asks.
"It's actually pretty great. I mean, I was not happy when you two decided this without me but it's been a good experience for me."
"So, you're going back after Christmas then?" my mom asks barely able to contain her enthusiasm.
"I didn't say that."
"Well, why not? What could be keeping you here?" she grills me.
I look up at my dad and I know he can see it in my eyes.
"Ah, I see."
"You see what?" my mom sounds annoyed that she's not in on it.
"Pam, she's in love."
"Love? You're too young to be in love," she folds her arms in front of her chest.
"I'm not too young. I've never felt anything like this before so it has to be love, right dad?"
"I think so."
"Of course you would. You would say anything to her to stay in her good graces."
"What is wrong with you mother?"
"Mother? Now you're calling me mother?"
"Yes I am because no matter what I do you're always dismissing it. And I feel like I'm inconveniencing you by being back in Rosewood. I mean seriously moth—mom, what is going on with you?"
"She has a right to know Pam."
"A right to know what?"
What the fuck is going on?
"Emily, come sit down next to me on the couch," my father insists and I feel like I have to otherwise my legs might cave beneath me.
My mom sits on the chair diagonal from us.
"Emily, you're seventeen now and I think old enough to understand what we're about to tell you."
"Jesus dad you're scaring me!"
"What your father is trying to say is, well, sometimes two people grow apart, not purposefully, it just happens."
"Emmy, your mother and I have grown apart."
"So, what are you saying," I'm feeling nervous all over.
"Honey, your father and I have decided to get a divorce."
I stand up fast, "A divorce! What? Why?"
My dad takes my hand, encouraging me to sit back down. I reluctantly do so.
"Emily, we've changed. We've chosen different paths. And those paths are taking us to other destinations. Your father and I are no longer each other's destination."
"What the fuck are you saying?"
"Emily, please, we both still love you very much but your dad loves his military lifestyle and I love—"
"You love what mom?" I ask with a furrowed brow fearing I know exactly what she's going to tell me.
"Not what Emily, who."
"Would you stop with the riddles and just tell me!"
"Pam, it's time. You need to tell her."
"Tell me what!"
I'm starting to perspire I'm so nervous and not in a good way.
"Emily, sometimes friendships turn into more than friendships."
Oh shit! It's true! My head snaps up daring her to say it out loud.
"Your friendship with whom?" I ask with gritted teeth.
"My friendship with Natalie—Natalie Kahn."
I fall back into the couch cushions with the palm of my hand covering my forehead, "I knew it. I knew it." I sit up again, "You're telling me that you're in love with a woman?" I think I'm turning red with anger, "You sent me away to California for coming out and now you're telling me you sent me away so you could try lesbian on for size!"
"Emily that's enough," my father defends her.
I stand up having had enough of this bullshit, "What the fuck dad! She ruined my life and now yours! She convinced you to send me to California while you were in Texas so she could play house!"
"It's not like that."
"So are you or are you not a lesbian?"
"I hate labels but if loving a woman means I'm a lesbian then yes I guess I am."
"Dad, are you hearing this?"
"I've heard it all before."
"And you're okay with it?"
"I'm adjusted to it. But we've talked at length and the truth is we have grown apart. I can understand her need to be with someone since I'm never around."
"Dad, she chose a woman!"
"I'm well aware of that."
"Doesn't that piss you off? Don't you feel emasculated? Dad, don't you care?"
"Of course I do Em!" he stands to confront my accusatory tone.
"Your mother and I still love each other but we can't be together anymore."
"If you still love each other, then isn't that worth fighting for?"
"Maybe in a different time but right now it's for the best. I can't give up something I love. I love being in command out in the field. I feel useless when I'm home. That's far more emasculating then your mother choosing her best friend to fall in love with."
"My head hurts."
"Emily, I never intended for this to happen. It just did. And, honestly, I'm happy. I'm not lonely anymore. Natalie and I share so much including the love for our children. My love for you will never change."
"But you doubted that love when you questioned me being a lesbian!"
"I questioned it because I felt guilty about making that choice for you."
"What are you talking about?"
"Your sexuality was predetermined at birth and so was mine but I ignored it. You, at least, had the courage to embrace it."
"Courage? For so long you made it seem wrong, like I was desecrating this family!"
"And I'm sorry for that. I tried so hard to fight it but what I didn't realize was that I was fighting a losing battle."
"Dad, she's saying she's been a lesbian her whole life. How are you okay with this?"
His hands grasp my shoulders turning me to him. Then he cups my face and says, "Em, I know our love was real because we created a beautiful baby girl together."
The tears stream down my face and I fall into his arms. I can't stop crying! My parent's marriage is over! My mother is a lesbian and my father's okay with it! How fucked is that!
"Emily, I was going to stay in the guest room but I've decided it would be better if I stayed at the Rosewood Inn. I'll be here for Christmas Eve and Christmas though, don't you worry about that."
I sniffle looking up at him, "And after that?"
"Well, you're mom and I are in the process of deciding where you're going to live."
"Live? What do you mean?"
"Em, I'm going back to Texas and I'm going to live there. Your mom is keeping the house and we both want to spend time with you."
"So, what are you saying?"
"He's saying," my mom gets up trying to soothe me with her hand caressing my back in a circular motion, "we need to decide where you're going to school next semester and for the summer."
"You want me to go back to California don't you?"
"I promised you that you could decide where you wanted to go for the rest of the school year. I'm not going to fall back on that promise. You can go to California. You can go to Rosewood High. Or you can go to the local high school in Texas."
I rub the tears from my eyes, "You mean live with dad?"
"Yes."
"You'd be okay with that?"
"Not really but I did say you could choose."
"And you dad?"
"I'm not gonna lie Em, I'd love to have you in Texas with me."
"Can I think about it?"
"Of course honey, you have until school break ends to decide."
"I can't believe this is happening."
"Emmy, what can we do?" my dad asks.
"What can you do? Give me space. Please."
"We can do that, give you some space," my mom agrees.
"And mom, I'm still wrapping my head around this lesbian thing so please don't—just don't expect me to be all rainbows and waving plaid flags around the house. I need time."
"That's all I ask."
"Can I go now?"
"Yeah, sure Emmy. That was a lot for you to hear. Go on ahead and think about what we've said."
I hug my dad and I almost ignore my mom but then the words my father said about loving each other when they created me surround my heart and I decide to hug her too. When I leave I can hear her crying. I know she expected me to shun her but I guess I can sympathize with her. I just don't know if I'm ready to forgive her for sending me away so that she could be gay.
I fall face forward on my bed. My head is spinning out of control. I can't be alone right now. I need you.
"Hello Maya?"
"Hey baby, is everything all right?"
"No, actually it isn't," I sniffle.
"You're crying. Oh Em, what happened."
"I need to see you. Can I please see you?"
"Yeah, of course, I'll be right there."
"Maya?"
"Yeah baby?"
"I love you."
"Aww, I love you too, I'm coming."
Maya texts me that she's in front of my house not sure if she should come in. I'm glad she did that so I can just leave without a lot of fanfare.
"Mom, dad I'm going out with friends! Alison needs a ride back to the city so a bunch of us are taking her!"
I hear my parents chittering and my dad yells out, "Okay Emmy, just be safe!"
I know my mom is probably having a fit about it but my dad gets me. He knows I need to be with my friends right now even if it's just one friend, the friend, Maya.
Maya and I drive away and she asks, "What's going on?"
"Maya, they're getting a divorce."
"What?" she swerves.
"Hey watch it!"
"Sorry, I just didn't expect you to say that."
"Well, hold onto the steering wheel tight cuz that's not all."
"What do you mean?"
"My mom is officially a lesbian."
She laughs, "Oh my god, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."
Then I start laughing!
"It's okay," I can barely speak. I'm tearing up from laughing so hard.
"I have to pull over," Maya cracks up.
She puts the car in park with the hazard lights on.
"I know. She admitted to it. She said she felt like a hypocrite basically. I don't know. It's just, Noel's mom and my mom, of all people!"
"I know right!"
"Maya?"
"Yeah baby," she squeezes my knee.
"Can we just drive?"
"We can do that."
She kisses me on the lips warming me from my head to my toes. She puts the car in drive and we just go and where we end up neither of us knows.
But then Maya's cell rings as we're driving so she asks me to put it on speaker phone and hold it close to her so she can talk.
"Maya, it's your mom."
"Hey, what's going on?"
"I'm just reminding you that your father and I will be in the city tonight and tomorrow so you're going to be by yourself."
"Oh right, I forgot about that."
"Maybe Spencer can sleep over and keep you company."
She eye sexes me briefly as her eyes focus again on the road, "Or maybe Emily?"
"Well that's fine but make sure Spencer is there too, okay?"
"Sure mom. I love you."
"I love you too hon."
I hit the end icon and look at Maya smiling.
"So, wanna sleep over?"
"Yes! Yes! Yes!"
We turn the car around and stop at my house to pack a bag. I was gonna sneak in but the car's gone. When we get in the house I see a note on the railing of the stairs saying that my mom is taking my dad back to the inn. She'll be home in an hour or so.
"Let's hurry up and pack and then call Spencer to be my cover. I'll leave a note that I'm sleeping over there."
"I wish we didn't have to lie," she says.
"Me too, but what choice do we have. I need to be with you Maya. I need your comfort."
I wrap my arms around her neck kissing her.
"Mmm, I wanna do that all night long."
"Hmm, I think that can be arranged," she smiles.
"Let's go before she gets back."
We make it to her house without anyone seeing us. Her parents are gone. We have the house to ourselves.
"Why don't you bring your bag upstairs while I turn on some lights and get a fire going."
"Okay, I'll be down in a sec."
I hang up my coat and take off my boots before going upstairs. I decide to get in my pajamas and when I come down the fire is beginning to brighten the room.
"All ready to snuggle I see," she wraps her arms around my waist.
"But you aren't, go change, I'll watch the fire while you're gone."
"Fine," she kisses my cheek and runs upstairs.
I few minutes later she's in her jammies, "Lookin' good," I tease.
"I'm gonna heat up some water for some hot chocolate or tea, you in?"
"Yeah, I'll go with the hot chocolate."
About ten minutes later she comes back with two mugs all frothy at the top and steaming.
"Looks great," I wrap my hands around the warm mug.
Maya places hers on the end table while she gets a blanket ready on the couch. Then she clicks on the TV looking for a movie to watch. I sit next to her.
"So that's what we're gonna do?"
"You had other ideas?"
"Actually, I think a movie is just what I need right now, an escape from the Fields drama."
"We can do other stuff too ya know."
"I'm sure we will," I kiss her alluring lips.
Maya sits with her back against the pillows while I lean into her in such a way that I can enjoy my hot chocolate and not spill it all over the place.
"Mmm, this is so good."
"Hit's the spot doesn't it?"
"It does but you do a much better job of hitting the spot."
"Ooo, Emily, are you suggesting I make a move?"
I put my hot chocolate on the coffee table and then take hers from her and place it next to mine.
"Now that I know what to expect, yeah, I'm suggesting you make a move."
She scooches under the blanket so she's lying on her back and I slip one leg between her and the couch and one between her legs lowering myself onto her. While we kiss her hands travel up my top caressing my bare back and then slowly her fingertips trickle to my belly, up to my breast, carefully feeling the shape of my nipple. She circles around it and glides over it and I can feel it harden as she pays it close attention. Our mouths are in sync as well as our tongues. Our breathing becomes rapid as her hand leaves my nipple for a wet, dark place. Her touch feels so amazing! We waited so long the first time and now I want her to love me all the time!
"Uh, uh uh!" I moan.
Never did I dream this could feel as incredible as it does. My birthday has opened a whole new world for me, for us and I'm never going to take it for granted! I won't be like my parents. I won't stray because of long distance if that's what I decide!
I thrust against her hard and fast when fear casts a shadow over my thoughts. But will Maya stray like my mom? I grind harder and harder needing her to make me cum! I need to eliminate those thoughts! I—need—to—release!
"Ahhhhhh!"
I writhe and shake and fall on top of her! I attack her face with my lips!
She responds with just as much vigor!
She pulls my bottoms off of me and turns me over onto my back. She throws the blanket to the floor and opens my legs diving into my love for her!
She is soo incredibly gifted. I love her mouth and everything attached to it! Oh god, here I go again!
"Uh, Uh! My! My! Mayaaaaa!"
She crawls up over me ravishing my lips with hers, wet from my pussy! I wrap my arms around her needing her as close to me as I can get her. Our lips forage a bond between us connecting us in a way that can never be broken at least that's what this feels like!
We make love over the sounds of the TV. I don't even know what's on and I don't care! All I care about is not being alone. All I care about is being with someone who truly loves me for who I am.
We wake around eleven o'clock when the doorbell starts ringing. We quickly get dressed and wash our hands and faces in the kitchen sink for obvious reasons!
But that damn bell just won't stop ringing! Someone is being very persistent.
"That might be Spencer," I say.
"Coming!" Maya calls out.
She opens the door.
"Maya!" she cries, "I've missed you so much!"
She wraps her arms around her practically knocking her off balance.
"Oh my god! Is everything okay?" Maya asks as she closes the door and locks it.
"It's perfect. Maya, I'm back. I'm staying in Rosewood. Best friends forever!"
As she takes off her coat and kicks off her boots she finally notices me.
"Em, you remember my best friend from California, Jasmine."
I can feel the jealousy blacken my heart, "Oh yeah, I thought you were going to school overseas," I sound less than enthusiastic to see her.
"Oh please, I hated it there. I begged my parents to let me come back to the states."
"So why aren't you in California?"
"Because the best high school ensemble is right here in Rosewood. Maya, we're gonna play together!"
And there she goes hugging on my girlfriend again!
"Didn't your parents tell you I was coming to stay for a few days while our house was being renovated? I know it's late but we just arrived and I really wanted to see you."
"No, no they didn't but that's okay, you know where the guest room is."
"Aww, I thought we could sleep together like old times."
My eyes send poisonous darts into the back of her head and Maya gets my message loud and clear.
"Umm, Emily and I are kinda sleeping in my bed."
"Oh," she turns scanning me up and down like I'm intruding on her territory.
"Em and I are together and we have been for a few months now."
"Oh, so it's nothing serious."
"It's very serious," I correct her.
Then she looks at Maya to confirm if what I'm saying is true.
"Jasmine, we're best friends, we are, but Emily, she's my best love."
And I melt right there. I halt the tears that are trying desperately to fall from my eyes.
"Hmm," she moans kind of monotone like she's not convinced.
"You're welcome to stay in the guest room Jasmine," Maya says walking over to me, slipping her arms around my waist, "but Emily's sleeping with me."
"Do your parents know?"
"They insisted."
"Oh, that's nice. Well, I guess it is late so I'll just go upstairs, but can I get just one more hug, I missed you so much."
"Of course."
Maya approaches Jasmine who hugs her very close, grabbing her hair, pressing her against her and when they part she kisses Maya on the lips!
"Good night," she winks and trots upstairs.
When she's completely out of sight I'm like, "What the fuck was that!"
"That was Jasmine testing you. She's very protective of me. So, just watch that you don't show her too much jealousy, it's your weakness."
"Oh really, you think I'm jealous."
She saunters over to me, "I know you're jealous."
"Ugh! I am. She just swoops in here like I don't exist."
"Don't worry. She knows you exist. And," she pushes my hair behind my ear, "I think it's time for us to go to bed too."
"I'd like that."
She kisses my lips, "Good. Jasmine is no threat to you unless you allow her to be."
"Can I at least be a little jealous?"
"Hell yeah! You wouldn't be human if you weren't," she nuzzles my ear with the tip of her nose.
Maya takes my hand leading me to her bedroom but all I can think about is—what is that Jasmine really up to…
