Chapter 47 Sarah Kaiba

Serenity arrived at the hospital screaming in pain from her contractions. This time, Mokuba never left her side. Seto paced the waiting room with Janet, occasionally dipping his head into the delivery room. If the nurses found it odd that Seto chose to spend time with his daughter instead of his wife, they did not comment.

Serenity, even in her hysteria, managed not to scream too many incriminating phrases. However, when a little girl with sharp violet eyes popped out of her, the doctor grew concerned. After conducting some preliminary tests to ensure that the child was healthy, Richard Cornforth, the Kaiba family doctor, excused himself from the room.

Richard found Seto Kaiba in the waiting room with his blue-eyed daughter. "Congratulations! It's a girl," he told the CEO.

Seto glanced at the man in the white coat and narrowed his electric blue eyes. "I already knew that. Do you have anything else you'd like to tell me?"

"She has," Richard gulped, "violet eyes."

"Good." Seto turned back to the picture book he had been reading to Janet, but Richard did not leave.

"I just wondered if . . . if you would like us to conduct a DNA test before we write up the birth certificate," the doctor added quickly.

Seto snapped the book shut and glared at Richard. "No. I don't want some hotshot punk like you poking through my family's DNA. I already know for a fact that both my wife and I carry the recessive gene for violet eyes. If I let you run the tests, you would make up some nasty story and sell it to the media, forever ruining my company's reputation and the lives of both my daughters. Now, you're going to put my name on that birth certificate and leave her DNA alone. Any questions?"

Janet watched attentively as her father chewed out the doctor. She knew that what her father said was not true, but he looked so intense that she dared not interrupt him.

Richard gulped. "What if she has a genetic disease or predisposition to certain conditions that could put her health in danger?"

Seto eyed the doctor carefully. This time, he seemed genuinely concerned. "You tell Serenity what to look for, and we'll run the tests ourselves, privately."

The doctor nodded and left them in order to go finalize the birth certificate.

Janet looked up at her father. "Why did you lie to him?"

"For your sister's protection. Janet, if anyone ever questions your sister's lineage, you tell them the exact same thing. Mokuba is uncle to both of you and I am father to both of you."

"But that's not true! Mommy said never to lie," Janet countered.

"Never lie to your family, and don't get into the habit of lying to others if you can avoid it. However, your family always comes first. You must always do whatever you must do to protect your family, and your sister needs your protection."

"Mr. Kaiba," a nurse called into the waiting room, "your daughter is ready for visitors."

Seto stood and took his daughter by the hand. They entered the hospital room together where the rest of his family was waiting for him. Mokuba sat unobtrusively beside Serenity while she held the little girl in her arms. All the non-Kaiba hospital staff were gone from the room, granting them some privacy.

Seto could not help but notice how his niece's tiny pink feet and hands looked so much like Janet's when she was a newborn. "What's her name?" Seto asked.

"Sarah, Mokuba replied, "at least that's what we told the doctor. Is that all right with you?"

"It's fine. You know, you really don't have to ask me these things Mokuba. She's your daughter. I already have one, and one is more than I can handle anyway."

Mokuba sighed with relief and said, "You know, Amanda told me that people in Paraguay don't just have one father, they have many. Any man who brings the mother food during her pregnancy is a father. By that logic, you're still more of a father than I am."

Janet blinked in confusion. "Does the mother get genes by eating the fathers? Can two fathers give genes to a baby in Paraguay?"

Serenity smiled softly. "No, it's just a cultural story invented to explain things because the people don't know much about science. It's a lot like how people say the rain comes from Yu Shi, Chaac, Jesus, or any other God or spirit."

"Then why were you eating Uncle Mokuba and Daddy?"

"I wasn't eating them, I was kissing them," Serenity explained.

"But they grew sausages for you!"

Mokuba winced. A wave of panic hit Serenity. How much had Janet seen? When did she even have the chance to spy?

Seto, unfazed by the remark, explained, " When adults get excited, they like to touch each other's genitals. Male genitals increase in size when they are excited."

"Will you touch my genitals?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"You are not an adult. If you really want your genitals touched, touch them yourself. Oh, and don't tell anyone about it and don't do it in front of other people."

"Why?"

"Social conventions. It's a game people play. If you don't play by the rules, you'll lose. You must pretend that certain parts of your body don't exist to gain people's respect."

"Is it a fun game?"

Seto smirked. "It can be. Just remember who you are through it all. Your family will always be here for you no matter what happens. You are a Kaiba, and that means you must walk with your head held high wherever you go."

After a few more formalities and some paperwork, the Kaibas took their new family member home and Serenity took a well-deserved rest.

Author's Note: I have a few sets of chapters that I will be posting as short stories separate to this one. My reasoning is that they don't really affect the main plot and I don't want to figure out which order to put them in. Some such as "Father Daughter Bonding," "The Formation of Duel Academy," and "When You Stop Looking" are already out there. Others are on the way.
