Chapter 30
15 years later
Dear Diary,
Today was pretty laid back and nothing really happened. I got an A on my Biology test and Mariana stole one of my shirts, but nothing major.
Jackson has taken me on trips to the lake near the house and he tells me stories about all the things I didn't have the chance to experience. Today we skipped rocks as he told me about sports and football. It seemed kind of confusing at first but I caught on and he even found a football to show me how to throw. He said when he and Arizona were just becoming friends, the team had just won the championship or something. Jackson also told me how organized school used to be, although it's not much different now. Apparently, the education I'm getting today is rushed because jobs are limited or something. He said they used to have summer breaks between years which makes me jealous because I've never had such a break. Our school house gets so hot during the summer classes and it takes everything to keep cool.
I really like that he takes me to the lake to tell me these thing because it's like visiting history. Sometimes he takes Mariana and I together and sometimes Devin Karev joins us too. It's hard to remember when the disease took over because I was a baby, but I wonder. I want to know about all the adventures and risks they took and monsters they've fought. The only thing close to adventurous Jackson will tell me is how they met Owen and Teddy. I haven't seen them in a while since they moved back to New York. I miss them.
Aunt Zona told me her brother died, but she never goes into grave detail about how. In the end, she just tells me how they lost a lot of important people including Callie's dad. Sofia says they never tell her about any of it either. Maybe they'll tell us one day.
Max got some kind of promotion in his job. He and Aria have been fighting so I guess that's something. Ria keeps yelling about how he's not loyal and should just leave. Sofia said she saw him hugging on another woman at the food center in the middle of town.
I haven't talked to Sofia in a while because she's grounded. Callie said she was trying to sneak boys into her room. Agamemnon saw one sneaking out and tattled the whole thing. He's only 11 and knows how to manipulate everyone around him, it's crazy. Sofia's only 14 and can sneak boys in. All the boys make fun of me at school. They make fun because I don't like dressing girly and now that I'm into sports, they make even more fun. Zona and uncle Jackson said they were bullied in school too becaue Jackson was never really smart and Zona was picked on because she's gay.
Zola wrote me a letter from Boston and she said everything is boring up there as it is over here. Meredith and Derek have started to let her watch films now. Movies are like gold but according to Jackson, they weren't that valuable in the past. It's so hard to come across them and find a way to watch them. She also said she was thinking of becoming a cop or lawyer to rebel against her parents wanting her to be a surgeon. I said that was cool and she should follow her dreams.
Devin is the only guy who I actually consider a friend at school now so we spend time treasure hunting and exchanging books together. Alex used to tell him more stories than the others would, but Jo made him stop and told him the only way to learn was to read. I don't know if that's true, but l like to read.
OH! Bailey offered me an internship at the clinic next year with Callie to hand out vaccines and I'm pretty excited. Callie is really encouraging in the dream department. She tells me all the time to follow my heart and dreams, and also not to listen to Mark. Mark and Lexie moved to Texas for a few years to work with some of their friends who live there, but he said there are no good paying jobs anymore except working with the government or at a hospital. I wouldn't do it for the money, but I've watched my aunt for years and it's all I could think about doing as a career.
April fussed at Jackson for telling me, but apparently I'm supposed to be driving by now? He said at 16, you get a plastic card so you can drive around. I don't see what the big hype was anyways because if we're not walking, we're taking the city bus. Apparently the buses we use now for the city used to be school buses that took kids to school.
I have a paper I need to write so I guess I'll write more tomorrow. There used to be computers that you could use to type papers which made it easier but now we used notebooks and old typewriters that hardly work. I wish I could remember those times of adventure and see what it was like before the disease struck. I also want to see if my family is out there. I know Aria, Arizona, Callie, Jackson, and April are all family but there's this sick feeling I get when I think that the people I'm actually related to might be living next door and I have no clue. There's no cure for this uneasy feeling.
I'll figure it out one day.
Thanks for listening,
MARIA
P.S. Aria sat Mariana and I down for dinner tonight and told us April was pregnant. I'm excited for her and Jackson. Congrats to them!
THANKS so much to everybody who followed me and my story and left comments to tell me what you thought and what you liked. I really enjoyed writing this FanFic and perhaps I'll have time to write another sometime in the future. I'm wanting to work on some of my own short stories away from Grey's but maybe I'll post them on here sometime so if you're interested, you can follow me and look for those. You guys were great, thanks. :)
