It wasn't going to last. He knew it wasn't going to last, it couldn't possibly last, and it tore him apart.
"We'll be all right. We'll keep going. We'll get by. We always have."
He didn't know how she could keep up that constant refrain. He didn't know how she could hold onto such hope in the face of so much despair.
But at the same time, there was part of him that wouldn't give in. There was part of him that still knew how to smile, still knew how to laugh, still knew how to point out stars to the little brown-haired boy on his shoulders. That part of him came from her; he knew it.
And so while his head despaired, his heart held on. And all of him, heart and head and everything that he had, treasured her and their son. He would treasure her forever, even if it didn't last like his head told him it wouldn't. No matter what the future held, he would always treasure these moments.
