Early morning sleep was broken by a horrible, painful scream. Dave shot upright, clutching his chest as the pain ripped through it. His deep voice crying out in pain made woke even the birds outside, causing them to fly off. It felt like a dagger had been plunged into his heart, but as he looked down, there was nothing there. A cold sweat formed and he looked to his side – Lily was gone! "No! No! No! No! No! No! Not again!" Dave jumped from the bed and started to search the castle for her. "LILY! LILY, Where are you?" He had searched everywhere; he headed outside the castle and began the search of the grounds. It didn't take long. There on her knees was Lily, gasping for air, dagger plunged into her chest. Dave ran to her and grabbed her. He rested her against his chest. "Lily…what have you done?! Oh God! Lily can you hear me?" Dave was frantic. He looked down at the pain and shock on her face and listened to her troubled breathing.
"I'm sorry!" Lily whispered to him.
30 Minutes Earlier…
"Wakey Wakey girl! I think it's time we finish this! We should take this outside; it would be a shame for our angel to wake up. Come on….let us decide once and for all which one of us deserves this body! There you go, one foot in front of the other…careful down the stairs, I would hate to win this fight because you managed to break your neck in your sleep." Lilith managed to use the strength she had been saving to control the body and get it outside of the castle. "Now be dear and pick up that dagger for us!" Lily bent down and unsheathed her dagger. "The way I see it, is there is no longer room for both of us in here! So it only makes sense one of us has to go!" Lilith hissed in Lily's head.
"What are we doing out here? What is the dagger for?" Lily woke enough to realize that she had not done any of this on her own volition. "What is the point to this Lilith? We cannot fight each other, we share the one body!" Lily shot back at the voice.
Lilith laughed at the pathetic confused questions of her body-mate. "We cannot fight ourselves that is true, but we can plunge the dagger into our own chest. It only makes sense that whichever is the stronger of us will survive the wound. I wish I could say I will miss you when you are dead, but that would be a vicious lie. Do not worry, soon enough our angel will forget all about you, and we will roam the world together again. You will be just a sad, distant memory for him; the girl too weak to deserve him!"
"You assume you will be the one to live! It could be me, but do not worry either, I will give him everything you could not. You will just be the demon bitch who dragged him down and darkened his inner light! So let us do this so I will not have to hear your voice ever again!' Lily spat back. She grabbed the dagger and after saying a little prayer for herself, stabbed herself in the chest with the dagger. The pain was staggering; it forced her right to her knees. As she felt the pain, she found it was becoming more difficult to breath. Her thoughts become more unfocused, until she heard his scream pierce the air. Moments later he was on the ground behind her, supporting her body. She heard him question what she had done, but she was in and out. Struggling to take a deep breath, Lily managed to whisper to him, "I'm sorry!" A single tear ran down her cheek, she could see the pain and hurt inside him and wished she could take it away. As she struggled with what would be her last breath, she caught the bright explosion of light in front of her. I lost! The angels are here to take me. I love you so much Dave! Please do not forget me! Lily's eyes closed and Dave howled.
He saw the male come from the light and stand looking at him. "A second time you have taken her from me! This time I am going to kill you, Michael!" Dave's dark eyes flashed with hatred as he grabbed the dagger free of Lily's chest and headed for his old friend.
The man merely put his hand out and said, "Stop! Our creator has sent me to help. He has been watching, seen the changes in you. I doubt they are sincere, but he refuses to believe otherwise. Just as he gave the humans free will, he has sent me with an offer. I have been given the power to save one of them, but one of them must die and it is your choice who I save. Whoever you pick, I shall heal with his power and you and she will live out your days without fear of me hunting you further." Michael looked down at his former brother. "You must decide quickly, the longer death stays; the less likely I am to be able to reverse it. Will you have me save Lilith or Lily?"
The decision was agonizing. Just as Lilith was brutal and aggressive, Lily was loving and caring. He had wanted Lilith back for so long, but he had fallen in love with Lily. How could he possibly choose between the two? Dave thought for several minutes, replaying his entire history with both of the women. "I am sorry to….." He lifted his head and stared at Michael. "Bring Lily back to me that is my decision."
"Very well" Michael came to Lily and placed his hand where the dagger had been. "Perhaps these changes are not just an act with you David. Perhaps I am wrong." Lily's body shuddered and her eyes came open, as if she had been struck with lightening. She made a loud gasping noise as air re-filled her lungs. Before pulling his hand free, Michael's eyes widen in astonishment and looked to the heavens. Without saying a word he nodded at the sky and removed his hand. "I have done what was asked of me. Lily is returned to you old friend. In thanks, perhaps you will name the child after me." Michael grinned at Dave.
"Child, what child? It is impossible, I am of the heavenly host, and I cannot produce offspring." Dave responded.
"Oh my dear old friend…do you not realize that once you accepted the faith that this woman had in you, you became so much more than an angel? She brought you back into our creator's light! In return for that, he saw fit to bestow you both a gift. As for the child, he or she will be a true profit amongst the humans. Lily, God did not turn his back on you. He watched your struggles and your determination. He felt your love for him and for Dave, and for that he has made it so you will never need to worry about leaving life before Dave. You both shall live together for as long as your both desire it. I am being called back now. Good luck to both of you!" With that, Michael disappeared back into the bright light and slipped away.
Dave hugged Lily tightly. "Never leave me again like that Lily. My heart cannot stand it. It felt as though you had plunged the dagger into my chest!" Leaning down, he kissed her softly on her lips.
"If your friend is correct about a child, I doubt either of us will have much time to leave the other one!" Lily managed a weak giggle before returning his kiss. Moments later he had lifted her into his arms and carried her back to their room. Laying her gently on the bed.
"I suggest plenty of rest for you; you'll need plenty when our child comes!" Dave smiled and laid down beside her, pulling her body closer to his. "I love you Lily!" He whispered.
"I love you to!" Lily whispered back.
Author's Note: I hope everyone has enjoyed this story as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I do believe a sequel will be written, after all, who doesn't want to see how Dave will react to a child!
