I was in a hotel room alone. I didn't want to be with anyone. Answering about Kayla's life is bothering me.
"It's time to go to the fair. I heard we have suspects there," said Dawn.
"Okay," I said.
"What's on your mind?" asked Shaggy.
The flashback begins.
At home, we were doing homework when I noticed something going on. Kayla was falling asleep. She has been feeling tired lately. I'm worried about her.
At 4:45 pm, I had to wake Kayla up so we can leave to give us time to get down to Claudia's for the meeting. At Claudia's, I noticed Kayla was falling asleep again.
"What's going on with her?" I asked. "She looks tired."
"She was fine all day in school," said Kaylee. "She has a doctor's appointment in New York on Friday. We'll probably going to be there all weekend."
"That's no fun," I said.
"Friday was the only day they can take her anyway," said Kaylee. "It won't be until after school, depends on how she feels."
"I'm concerned about her," I said.
"So am I," said Kristy.
"I hope things will be fine," said Dawn.
The flashback ends.
"Kayla and I were so close," I said.
"I bet you were," said Shaggy.
"I remember when the results came back, but we didn't learn about it until Kayla and her folks came back," I said. "But she had a biopsy first."
The flackback begins.
In New York, at the apartment, the doctor had called Mrs. Willis to come over that morning.
"Okay," said Mrs. Willis.
She told her husband and went to the hospital. They were in his office.
"The results came back early and I'm not sure how to tell you this, but Kayla has cancer. I'm not sure which stage yet. I'm waiting for that part. That could show up either today or tomorrow," said the doctor. "We're unsure how long she'd have, either."
"We'll wait to tell the kids when we go back home," said Mrs. Willis.
"We'll have to tell Mary Anne, too," said Mr. Willis. "Does Kayla know?"
"Not yet. She had just woken up," said the doctor.
"Can we go see her?" asked Mrs. Willis.
"Sure," replied the doctor.
They went to see her.
"We just got news, which is why we came," said Mrs. Willis.
"What about?" asked Kayla, who was getting nervous.
"The results showed up positive and you got cancer," said Mrs. Willis.
"Cancer?" asked Kayla while her voice was breaking. "How could've happen?"
"The doctor doesn't know what stage at this time," said her mom. "He's waiting for that either later on or tomorrow."
"I hope it's caught early enough," said Kayla. "That explains why I have a lump in my throat and feeling tired."
A few hours later, Kayla learned about the worst truth: She was in Stage 4.
"What do you mean I'm in Stage 4?" asked Kayla. "How long do I have?"
"You could have six months to a year if you're lucky enough," said the doctor. "I already informed your parents."
Kayla got terrified.
"We'll start with Chemo first thing tomorrow morning and you can go home sometime in the afternoon if you feel good enough," said the doctor.
Meantime, Kaylee and I were hanging out at the mall after school.
"I've been praying for Kayla last night," said Kaylee.
"Same here," I said.
That afternoon, we were at home doing homework in the living room. Dad was letting us stay behind while they went to Carlos' game so we can see Kayla. We had just finished when her parents and Kayla got home.
"They're back," said Kaylee.
"Yeah," I said as I looked out the window. "Is she okay? She looks upset about something."
"You're right. That's not a good sign," said Kaylee.
We looked at each other. She grabbed her bag as we went over there. Her mom was unloading the car.
"How's Kayla making out?" asked Kaylee.
"She's upset right now," said Mrs. Willis.
"Why can't we see her?" I asked.
"Just give her time," said Mrs. Willis.
"But Kaylee and I stayed home while my family went to Carlos' game so we can see her," I said.
"Yeah, we didn't do that for nothing," said Kaylee.
"Let them see her," said Mr. Willis. "She's asking for them."
"Thank you," I said.
We went inside to see Kayla. We noticed she looked scared.
"Are you okay?" asked Kaylee as we sat on her bed.
"The results came back," said Kayla.
"What did the doctors say?" I asked.
"I'm sick with cancer," said Kayla. "Just found out yesterday."
I got speechless.
"Are you serious?" asked Kaylee.
"Yes. I'm in Stage 4 and if I'm lucky, I have about six months to a year to live," said Kayla. "I already started Chemo this morning."
"Wow," said Kaylee.
The flashback ends.
"Wow," said Shaggy.
"I know," I agreed. "I got so upset that I left there."
"You were brave to tell us that story," said Velma.
"I was?" I asked.
"Of course," said Velma.
I didn't realize it. "Kayla came over to see me and understood. I didn't leave her side ever since."
We asked a few witneses about the fire.
"I heard someone got paid to do so," said a woman.
"Do you know who?" asked Velma.
"No, that's all I know," replied the woman.
Some others said the same answers. We're getting closer.
