Five-Mila
There was no way Embry was 29. He didn't look a day over 18. Of course when I asked him to see his ID he didn't have one on him. What grown man walked around without their ID? I opened my mouth to ask him another question when my alert on my computer started going off. I knew from the tone it was Caleb. I turned the computer around and accepted his video call.
"Hey baby cakes!" he said. I laughed and waved at him. I hated the fact that he called me that but he had been doing it for years. I didn't know how much I looked forward to him calling me that. Hearing it made me miss him and it had only been two days or so since I had seen him.
"Hey boo," I said back to him. He smiled and blew me a kiss which I returned. He was walking outside and it was just after 3 back there. School must have just let out. I could hear and see people walking around him.
"So how was the move?" he asked.
"It went fine. But Caleb La Push is so small I can run from one side to the other. There's only a diner and one store around here. And the mall you have to be on the highway for at least 30 minutes."
Caleb gasped and shook his head. He was dramatic all the way. That response was exactly what I expected from him. We had met in drama class in the eighth grade and instantly clicked. He went on to tell me about school and his life. It had only been two days but apparently there was so much going on.
"So did you talk to her about winter break yet? Moms said it was cool and I can use my cousin's discount for the plane ticket."
"I didn't ask yet. But I'm sure that she'll say its fine," I said. I turned and looked at Embry who started coughing when I said that. It was a coughing fit and he sounded like he was chocking. I passed him my bottle of water and started patting his back.
"Are you ok Embry?" his eyes were watering up at this point and I was starting to get scared a little.
"Mila who are you talking to and what the hell happened to your head?" Caleb yelled out at me. I had forgotten all about it and as if on cue, my head started hurting. I closed my eyes and groaned out. Embry stopped coughing and scooted closer to me.
"Are you alright?" Embry asked me. I could hear Caleb talking in the background but all I couldn't say anything. I shook my head and opened my eyes.
"Embry I'm fine. Caleb I fell earlier but I'll call you later." He was still yelling when I ended the call. Embry grabbed the pill bottle off the table and passed me two pills. I wasn't a pill person but I wanted the pain to stop. They went down easy. I turned and looked at Embry. His eyes still glistened with tears.
"Are you ok? You sounded like you were about to die."
"Yea you know something just went down the wrong pipe," he said laughing. I gently pushed him and scooted back against the couch. My stomach started to growl. It was then I realized it had been hours since I had eaten. "Are you hungry?" I asked him. Embry smiled and I swear I felt butterflies. It was a perfect smile, warm and made you want to smile back. I jumped up and quickly grabbed the arm of the couch. The room was spinning. Embry jumped up and wrapped his arms around my waist.
"Whoa, what are you doing?" he asked me.
"I'm going to go make us some food."
"No you need to just take it easy. I'll do it."
"And what exactly do you know how to cook that isn't cold cereal or sandwiches?" I asked him.
Embry put a hand on his chest. "I'll have you know I make a mean grilled cheese. But how about we go out? My treat," he said smiling.
"You're treating? But you don't even have your wallet. I'm not down with dining and dashing." Embry let out a loud laugh.
"There will be no dining and dashing. I was thinking we could go to my friend Emily's house. That way you can get some good food and meet some more people. Since you'll be living here you might as well get to know everybody."
"That sounds good. But I need you to let me go so I can get dressed," I slowly said to him. I didn't want him to let me go. He was so cute and strong. And his arms warmed me up. He looked down and his eyes, his eyes were so damn amazing. He was so tall and attractive. I needed to get away from him but I didn't want to. Embry leaned down and I could smell his mint breath. He was breathing shallow just like mine. I was 17 and I knew that he was way too old for me. At damn near 30 he was old enough to be my dad. Well not my dad exactly but he was older. But I wanted to kiss him…I needed to kiss him.
The front door flew open and I jumped out of Embry's arms. Ava came running in the living room and over to me. "Mila are you ok?" she asked me while looking me up and down. "I got here as fast as I could."
"I'm fine Ava really. I just tripped while I was out running. If it wasn't for Embry I probably would still be out there."
Ava turned and suddenly noticed Embry standing behind her. She looked at him and then back at me before smiling at us.
"Glad to know you're ok. I was thinking we could go out for dinner tonight."
"Actually I was going to dinner with Embry well not with Embry but he's going to take me to his friend Emily's."
"Emily's huh," Ava said with a smirk on her face. "Well, have fun tonight. Embry, could you have her home by at eleven?"
"Of course Ava," Embry said quickly. Ava looked at him and then me again before walking out her living room. I looked back over to Embry and pointed towards the stairs.
"I'll be back in a few minutes," I said before turning around and going upstairs to get dressed.
This made no sense…no sense what so ever. I was so nervous being with Embry, which was stupid. I had been around him practically all day but as we got ready to walk into Emily and Sam's house I couldn't stop shaking. I decided to keep it simple with a pair of black skinny jeans, a long sleeve purple top, and my favorite pair of purple and black Chucks. My heart was pounding and my hands were starting to sweat. Just before we walked in, Embry turned and looked at me.
"You're gonna be fine, trust me," he smiled. I returned his smile and held my breath as he walked in. I followed behind him. We went into the living room and were met with a chorus of 'heys and hellos'. Embry waved and put his hand on my shoulders.
"Guys this is Mila. You know Jake, Colin, and Seth. That's Quill, Brady, Jared, Paul, and Sam," he said as he pointed to each of them. I noticed that they all were equally huge, what the hell were they eating? They all stood up and even though they were different heights they were still big. After shaking hands and saying hello, Embry turned around and led me towards the kitchen. One of the women walked over to me with wiping her hands on a small towel.
"You must be Mila. I'm Emily," she said reaching for my hand. I looked up into her face and paused. She was beautiful and looked a lot like Leah, except she had three scars running down the side of her face. I cleared my throat and smiled at her.
"It's nice to meet you. You already know Leah and this is Kim," Emily said turning to point at the girl standing around in the kitchen.
"Yo Em!" one of the guys called from the living room "Get in here!" Embry looked to the living room and back at me.
"I'll be fine. You said so yourself," I smiled and pushed him out of the kitchen. Leah was sitting on a counter top slowly stirring some kind of batter. Kim was busy chopping vegetable and Emily went back to the stove. I stood awkwardly watching, not wanting to get in their way. It seemed like they had a very efficient operation going on. There was so much food! I swear there was enough food to feed a small army. Emily pulled two lasagna's out the oven and sat them on a cooling rack. She grabbed the bowl from Leah then pulled out tow baking trays.
"So how do you like it so far?" Emily asked as she slowly poured the batter into the trays.
"It's fine, much smaller than I'm used to. And quiet," I told her. All the girls laughed at my joke.
"Yea but you'll grow to love it. Just stay out of the forest okay?" Leah asked me. I laughed and touched my temple.
"You don't have to tell me twice. I'll pass on falling and seeing strange women in the forest."
"Strange women?" Emily asked. I decided that I should help so I grabbed the salad and started mixing it together.
"Yea right before I ran into Embry and fell there was this weird lady just out there. She wasn't even dressed for a hike."
"So Mila, I noticed that you weren't at school today," Kim cut in. I could tell from her tone she was trying to change the subject. I didn't know why though. "You aren't attending the Native school?"
"No I'm not. I actually go online. Something about you need special permission and Ava couldn't get it in time. I didn't want to fall too far behind so I just enrolled online. How do you know I wasn't in school?"
"I work in the office and Bree was going to have her niece show you around but you weren't registered. News travels fast here if you hadn't figured it out yet," Kim said with a laugh. We spent the rest of the time finishing up dinner. As soon as the last tray of brownies came out Leah grabbed four plates and passed them out. I followed suit as they all started fixing some food. There were two lasagnas, a roast, three backed chickens, at least five sides, and three different desserts.
"Is that all you're going to eat?" Emily asked. I helped myself to chicken, green beans, and a piece of lasagna. I nodded yea and Emily called for the guys to come in. it was like watching a movie the way they poured in the kitchen. I had never seen so much food being loaded onto a single plate. Leah motioned for me to walk outside with the girls. We sat on the back porch as the guys fixed heir food.
"Do you cook like this every day?" I asked Emily.
"No only when the guys meet up, so that's about once a week. But if I had to I wouldn't mind. I love cooking and having all the guys over. We're one big happy family around here." Once dinner was done the guys came outside and started playing a little football. It was nice being around all these people. I was an only child and only spent time with Caleb. This was nice watching them play and laugh. Collin and Paul were taking the game very serious. Collin had just stolen the ball from Paul and ran in for a touchdown. Paul started yelling at Brady for missing a crucial block.
"He was right there Brady FUCK!" Paul yelled. His arms started to shake and I mean really shake. Jake and Collin grabbed him and started taking him towards the forest. Which was weird.
"Come on, let's go inside," Emily said grabbing my hands. I wanted to stay and watch especially after all the guys ran off to follow them but instead I followed Emily. I could her yelling then nothing.
"Are they going to be ok?" I asked Emily.
"They'll be fine," Kim said walking in "Just men being men."
Sure enough when they came back some time later all the guys were laughing and joking. Embry walked over to me and asked me if I was ready to go. I had about 30 minutes till my curfew. I told everyone goodbye, promised Emily I would be back and followed Embry out onto the porch.
"That was fun," I told him.
"See I told you it would be fine." Embry said with a laugh. "You're gonna learn you can trust me one day."
