Now on to my personal note: I just want to apologize if you guys think the story is moving to slow. I just feel like background is always important in a story. Again I'm trying to post at least three times this week. I'm working full time and I'm a mom which means my free time is few and far between. But I promise at least posting three times a week! Happy reading!
Six-Embry
I couldn't believe that Paul almost messed up like that! If he would have phased and I was forced to explain everything to Mila tonight, I would have never forgiven him. This wasn't as simple as all the other imprints; we had major obstacles in our way. I had to be smart about this or everybody would get hurt. We were barely away from Sam and Emily's when Mila turned the radio down.
"Embry can I ask you a question?" she said to me.
"You just did but go ahead," I said smiling. She cleared her throat before turning and looking at me.
"Are you guys ok?"
"Who?"
"You and Paul and the guys. It looked like you guys were having a pretty intense fight or argument or whatever it was."
"Oh," I sighed in relief "Yea we're fine. It happens a lot more than you think. We have our disagreements but we always get over it."
"Do you guys always go in the forest to handle it?"
"Yea, we don't like the girls to see us disagreeing."
"That's sweet of you guys."
"So tell me about you," I said to her.
"There isn't much to tell. I mean you already know the basics."
"Yea but I mean more than that. Like what's your favorite thing to do?"
"Reading," Mila said quickly "And running but reading is hands down my all-time favorite thing to do."
"What do you like to read?"
"Everything but I love the classics. You know Jane Austen, Harper Lee, Shakespeare. But then you have people like Gabrielle Zevin, Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult, Alice Walker, Carl Webber, Toni Morrison. Right now I'm reading an amazing book."
Mila started telling me all about the latest book she was reading. I could feel the happiness seeping out of every word she was saying. Her eyes were lit with excitement and her hands were flying left to right as she went into deeper detail about the book. Listening to her it was like I could see the words on the page just like her. The entire time she was talking I could see the smile on her face. It was amazing. Mila finished talking about the book then started telling me more about herself and her life back in Michigan. She told me how she was on the track team in her high school, wanted to attend the University of Michigan, and about the daycare she worked at. She never mentioned Caleb. I didn't know if it was on purpose or not. I also couldn't ask because I wasn't sure how she would feel.
"I'm so sorry I spent this whole time just running my mouth. I never asked anything about you," she said laughing "I'm not usually that rude."
"Its fine," I said puling to a stop. We had finally made it to Ava's. I don't think Mila noticed that I never drove faster than 20 miles an hour. Mila looked at the house and then back at me.
"Thanks for dinner Embry. I had fun."
"No problem," I said as she opened the door and climbed out. Mila paused before shutting the door.
"Do you want to come over tomorrow? I have class tomorrow from 12-4 but after that I'm free. I mean if you want," she said quickly. My heart skipped a beat actually. Mila actually wanted to spend time with me.
"I'm usually at work until 6," her face dropped a little "But I'll be here."
Mila smiled and waved before shutting the door and walking up to the porch. She turned around and waved before walking in. I smiled waved back and pulled off. When I pulled up in front of the house, I was glad all the lights were off. It meant that Bree wasn't waiting up. I closed the door as softly as I could before walking into the kitchen. I heard the television on and knew Bree was up waiting. There was a plastic container with my dinner inside. I slid the container back into the fridge and made my way into the bedroom. When I got closer to the shut door I heard the TV click off and the bed rustling.
Bree was laying completely still on her side of the bed. If I wasn't part wolf I would have easily been fooled but this. I smiled and thought about all the times that I fooled my mother with that same thing. I grabbed a change of clothes and jumped in the shower. I needed to get some sleep. I had an early patrol before I needed to be at work. I wasn't lying when I told Mila that I was at work until 6 usually. Jake had opened up a car repair shop after graduation. With help from the Cullen's and a great business ethic he had two locations. One in Forks and one not too far from the Reservation. Jake made it a point to offer everybody in the pack a job at the shop and while most of us did work there, a few chose to venture off. Seth and Leah were good at building things so they had a furniture business; it was mostly ran online and out of their home with the help of their mother.
After a much needed shower I went back into the room and found Bree sitting up on the bed. The TV was back on and she was watching another one of her reality shows. She didn't say anything but the three deep sighs she let out, told me I was in trouble.
"What's wrong Bree?" I asked her after she let out yet another sigh.
"Nothing," she said. Her tone was short and smart. Which anybody knows it code for I'm really mad at you. I sat up and grabbed the remote from her. Bree instantly put her arms in front of her chest.
"What's wrong Bree?"
"I should be asking you that Embry! What happened to you today?" she asked me. I had no idea what she was talking about. And she could tell.
"We were supposed to furniture shopping and then to dinner! You promised that I could put my own touches here and that included a new living room set. How would you forget? I've only been talking about for it a month."
"I'm sorry I forgot all about it. Something came up at work-"
"And what exactly came up at work?"
"Bree you know I can't talk to you about that!" I said to her. Ever since she moved in Bree was starting to ask more and more questions. It was easy to dismiss it or come up with something when she wasn't around 24/7. I could explain the nights I would go without calling as being too tired or anything. But she was here now, she could see right through the bullshit.
"And why can't you talk about it Embry? You work at a freaking car shop, what is so secretive about car parts?" Bree asked. I didn't need this right now. I tossed the remote next to her and grabbed my pillow. Bree followed behind me still talking. I started counting down from 100 and breathing deeply. I could feel my shakes starting to come on. I had to get this under control quickly.
"What is going on with you Embry? It's like you don't even want me here. You're gone three nights out the week and when you are here we fight."
"We aren't fighting Bree. You have your opinion and I have mine. I told you before you moved in that I couldn't talk to you about work. My mom doesn't even know everything about what I do," I had made my way into the living room and was fixing up the couch. I was able to calm myself down. As I threw a sheet across if, I knew I was going to be uncomfortable. I could barely stretch all the way out on the couch to relax, let alone sleep on it.
"And you're ok with that?! You're ok with keeping secrets from your mother and me?" Bree asked. I didn't respond. This conversation was going nowhere. She wanted to know about everything and I couldn't tell her everything; especially not now. There was a strict rule only the imprints, elders, and pack members knew everything. Anybody on the outside wasn't to know anything. Bree wasn't either. My mother had accepted it, especially when she saw I was spending more time with Jake and his dad. She didn't question it, why couldn't Bree do the same.
Bree walked over and wrapped her arms around my neck. "Embry I hate when we fight," she said quietly.
"We aren't fighting Bree."
"It's just I was really looking forward to today. This is supposed to be our home but nothing in here says Bree lives here. It looks exactly how it did before, like I just stay over some nights." She was crying now, for what I had no idea. I wrapped my arms around her and rubbed her back.
"I'm sorry ok. Look we can go look at furniture this-"
"Tomorrow?" Bree said cutting me off. Tomorrow wasn't going to work. I was supposed to meet up with Mila. I needed to meet up with Mila. But as I looked down in Bree's eyes, I just smiled and kissed the tip of her nose. That was my way of letting her know she was right. She kissed my lips back and led me back to the bedroom. She pulled me down on top of her and kissed my neck. It had been days since we had, you know, but I couldn't. I stopped her from kissing me and rolled over to my side.
"Work was brutal today Bree, "I whispered. She understood and slid next to me. Her head was on my shoulder and it wasn't long before she was sleep. I barely had my eyes closed before Mila found herself in my dreams.
The next morning Bree was in a good mood. She cooked breakfast and made sure to say at least five times how she couldn't wait till we went shopping. When I walked in the shop Jake, Seth, and Collin were all there.
"Geez Em, you look like shit," Seth said as I walked past him. Jake punched him in the arm. I didn't say anything to them. I needed to work. I walked over to the Taurus that Collin was working on. They all knew this meant I didn't want to talk. I went the entire morning, listening to them talking. Once lunch came Seth and Collin left to do their patrol. Once they were gone Jake walked over, a bottle of water in his hand. I took it and smiled before drinking the whole thing.
"What's going on Embry? It's not like you to be this quiet. And you've been ignoring Seth's quips all morning. I need to learn how to do that" he said laughing. Jake was right, I had been quiet. I really didn't know what to do with myself. I only had two hours before I was supposed to meet up with Bree but all I wanted to do was spend time with Mila.
"I just don't know Jake. What am I supposed to do with all this? I never wanted to imprint."
"None of us did but it happens."
"Right but none of you imprinted on someone who already has a someone when you have a someone," Jake looked surprised. I wasn't sure if I should have told him Mila had a boyfriend. I wasn't even sure about it but that's what it was. I had Bree and she had Caleb.
"Imagine imprinting on a baby who is half leech," Jake said laughing "But seriously everything is going to work out. I mean I thought I was in love with Bella before Nessie came along. It wasn't her, it wasn't me. It was Nessie and the spirits. They knew I needed Nessie and they knew Bella was going to give her to me. You might not get it now but the spirits say you need Mila."
"But what about Bree? We've been together for a year. Hell we live together. What am I supposed to do about her?"
"That my friend is something I can't answer," Jake clapped me on my shoulder "But you'll figure it out."
He went into his office and I went back to working on the car. After we finished up I kept my promise to Bree. We drove into Port Angels so she could find a living room set that she liked. I left her alone looking after the third store. She kept saying she was looking or something that spoke to her and I had no idea what she was hearing. Everything I pointed out she found a problem with. Before we walked in the fourth store I told her to just pick something and made my way back outside. There was a bookstore around the corner and before I knew it found myself walking the aisles. There were so many books and I had no idea where to start. I figured the new releases section would be my best bet. After looking for a while I picked two books for Mila. I hoped she hadn't read them already. When I walked back into the furniture store I found Bree standing at the counter. She decided on a white couch and loveseat with red accent pillows. I hated it. I couldn't tell her that of course but it was not something I would have picked for us. We made it back home around 8. It wasn't too late for me to go Mila's.
I gave Bree a kiss on the cheek before telling her I would be back.
"Where are you going? I wanted to watch a movie," Bree said. I paused and thought about the books I had stashed in my car. Bree looked up at me with a pout on her lips.
"I'll get the popcorn," I said. Bree clapped and ran into the living room.
"Goodbye hideous brown couch," she said as she turned the TV on. It probably shouldn't have bothered me as much as it did. But I felt a horrible cringe when she said that. I had the couch for years, it was the first thing i bought for myself when I got the place.
Please review! I'm hoping for at least two reviews just to let me know what you guys think so far. Thanks!
