Eight-Mila

It had been four days and I hadn't heard or seen from Embry. It was really driving me crazy too. That coupled with the fact that I literally went from Emily's back to Ava's. I was slowly losing my mind. I closed the book I was reading and went downstairs. Ava was sitting on the couch. I plopped down next to her.

"What's wrong Mila?" Ava asked. She was typing on her computer. Ava had been working from home.

"I am dying of utter complete boredom here."

"You can go to Emily's if you want," she said. I let out a sigh of frustration. It wasn't that I didn't like Emily but all we did was bake and talk. If the other girls came over we would just bake more stuff. I was so tired of baking, I needed some space. I wish I could have called Caleb to come over. He would have brought some much needed excitement into this boring existence I was currently having.

"I don't want to go to Emily's! I need a break. Can I please go shopping or something?"

"Sorry kid, the closet shopping options are in Port Angeles. And that's over an hour away."

"Ava you have to give me a break. I'm losing my mind here!"

Ava put her laptop down and looked at her watch. "If we leave right now we should be able to get the salon before they close. We can get our nails done. Then tomorrow we can go shopping. As a matter of fact, I'll call Leah. It can be a girl's trip!" she said smiling. I smiled and went to grab a jacket before we hit the road. We made it to the salon with a half hour to spare. It felt good relaxing and laughing with Ava. After getting our nails done we stopped and grabbed a bite to eat. With the promise of shopping I was feeling better.

"Looks like we have company," Ava said to me as we pulled up to the house. I turned and looked out the window. Embry was walking off the porch and down the steps. I didn't even attempt to hide my smile as I stopped in front of him.

"Embry," Ava said as she walked past. Her voice was filled with sarcasm and she had this weird look on her face; almost like she knew some secret. Embry nodded his head at her. Ava stepped on the porch and quickly turned around. "Embry I need to talk to you before you leave." He cleared his throat. "Sure I'll be inside." Once the door was closed we just stood there. Sensing he wasn't going to the take the lead I turned around and looked at the road.

"Let's go sit," I told him. The front porch would have been a good option with the swing, but I didn't want anybody to hear us talking so I led him to the back of the house.

"So how have you been?" He asked me as we slowly made our way to the small picnic table Ava had. I shrugged my shoulders. I had been bored out of my mind. I had missed him, just being around him. But I couldn't tell him that. Instead I chose the politically correct answer.

"Bored but alright," I said with a laugh. "Ava took me to get my nails done and tomorrow we're going shopping in Port Angeles. How have you been?" I held my nails up for him to see. It was dusk which meant there was just enough light for him to see my nails.

"Busy with work and everything," he said. So that's why he hadn't come back. I quickly put the thought out of my head. I had just met this man and he wasn't interested in me. Even if I wanted him to be a little. I needed to get the conversation to a different place.

"What do you do again?"

"I work with Jake at the shop and I help out with a neighborhood watch type thing."

"Neighborhood watch? So you guys are watching out for the wolves?"

His eyes got really big when I mentioned them. Then just as quickly as he was shocked he laughed and shook his head and dismissed it with a laugh. Great, Embry was just like everyone else.

"Don't tell me you don't hear them to. Does everybody on this reservation just ignore them? It can't only be me."

"I got you something," he said changing the subject. I raised an eyebrow and smiled. He smiled back at me as he pulled two books from behind his back. I hadn't even noticed him carrying a bag or the books. When he sat them down I smiled. One was the latest book by the author I told him about last time we were together. The other one was one I had read already. I didn't have the heart to tell him that, not when he went out of his way to get me such a good gift.

"You didn't read this already did you?" he asked me. I shook my head no. I knew if I opened my mouth I wouldn't be able to lie to him. He looked at me with a sense of pride, almost like a little good who had just been told they did a good job. I thanked him for the books.

"So tell me about you," I said to him "It's only right since I did all the talking last time."

"There's not much to tell really," Embry said before going starting. He told me about his mother and how he didn't know his father. We talked about our favorite movies, things we did for fun, and everything in between. Ava brought us out some sandwiches and drinks for us to eat. I only ate one sandwich but Embry finished the four that were on the serving dish.

"I'm telling you it was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me," Embry said. I covered my mouth as I laughed with tears falling down my face. Embry was laughing just as hard as me. He gasped for air before finishing his story.

"I mean I was there with no shorts on! I had done this a million times and now with everybody on the beach, this happens to me. And then everybody was watching! Jake, Leah, all the guys, even Emily was there. It was so embarrassing," Embry said.

"You have got to take me one day," I told him. Embry stopped laughing and looked at me.

"Seriously?" he asked me. His face and his voice told me how shocked he was.

"Yea it sounds really fun."

"It's kind of chilly to go right now. But I can show you where we do it tomorrow," Embry said. I was about to say of course when my phone started ringing.

"We found love in a hopeless place…we found love in a hopeless place….we found love in a hopeless place."

I swear Caleb must have some kind of radar on him. Every time I'm having a moment with Embry he calls! And this was a moment, well I thought it was. I sent Caleb to voice mail and was about to say yes when my phone rang again. I looked down and Caleb was calling again. I held up a finger and answered.

"Caleb let me call you back," I heard him yelling something as I hung up on him. He would be pissed of course but it was worth it.

"Umm tomorrow sure," I said.

"Cool well I'll be here tomorrow."

"You promise?" I asked him. "I mean last time you said that you never showed up."

"I'm really sorry about that Mila," Embry said. His voice filled with hurt.

"It's ok Embry. Now if you were my boyfriend and did that there would be hell to pay." As soon as the words slipped out I wished I could take them back. If it bothered Embry he didn't say anything. Maybe he didn't hear me when I said it. I held my hand out to him.

"Here I'll give you my number, if you can't make it just give me a heads up." I put my number in his phone and passed it back to him. When he took it my fingertips brushed his. I can't explain what it was but it felt like nothing I'd ever felt before. It was like a current went through us. I felt my breathing get shallow and my face started to flush. Embry stared at our hands before looking back up at me. Suddenly I didn't care that he was so much older than me. I leaned over and placed my hand on his lap. My lips parted in anticipation of the kiss. I couldn't tell if he was leaning closer to me but before I lost the nerve I needed to try it. I stopped leaning towards him. If he wanted this he needed to let me know.

I could feel his breath on lips and my heart started to pound. We were close...less than an inch away when three things happened. Ava yelled I had a phone call, Embry's phone started to ring, and a howl pierced the air. This howl wasn't like any of the other ones I had heard before. I quickly pulled away and looked at Ava. She had a cordless phone in her hand; I had forgotten there was landline in the house. Embry pulled his phone out and looked at it quickly.

"I gotta go," he said quickly as he jumped up. I waved bye but he didn't notice as he was running towards his car. I grabbed my books and walked towards the house. I didn't bother asking who it was, I already knew.

"Caleb I'm going to kill you," I said as soon as I had the phone. Instead of the smart remark I was expecting I was met with the sounds of Caleb crying. I could barely understand what he was saying. But I was able to put together the most important part. Caleb's mom had been in a really bad accident.
