Sixteen- Mila
"Mila you need to get up now or we are going to be late!" Ava was yelling for me but stopped when she saw me walking downstairs already dressed. She watched me walk into the kitchen and followed behind me.
"You're up…and you're dressed…and smiling," she said in disbelief. I was barely able to get any sleep. But instead of telling Ava that I just kept on making my breakfast. I still couldn't believe that last night actually happened. It was amazing to say the least. Like so absolutely perfect that I didn't want to go to sleep.
"So how was your date last night?" Ava asked sitting at the table. She passed me the newspaper and went straight to the classified section. I didn't have to work but spending my days sitting around thinking about Embry was going to drive me crazy. I had circled two jobs when Ava cleared her throat. "Spill it."
"Well," I said slowly "it was amazing!" I yelled out. Ava clapped and smiled waiting for me to go on.
"We went up to the Third Cliff and he had a picnic all set up for us. We ate and we talked. And it was like we were in our own little world. Then he just came out and told me how he felt. I almost wanted to cry listening to him talk Ava. He was saying everything I wanted to say to him. And then when I was telling him what I was worried about he kissed me! And it was so perfect; I mean I don't have much to compare it too. But Embry is so much better than Derrick from eight grade."
"Awww Mila that's great. So are you guys going out again today?"
"I don't know. He told me to take some time to think it over. And I last night I couldn't do anything but think. I do like him a lot but I think we should just be friends right now. Just to see how everything goes. He may have said he didn't care about our age difference but it's not something you can ignore. So I figure we can give it until my birthday before we make anything official or put a title on it. Right now I just like us hanging out and being friends."
"That's a very mature way to view things. And I am very surprised. I mean most girls would be falling all over themselves if an older man said he wanted to date them"
"Well he didn't say that exactly. He said he liked me and he wanted to be whatever I needed him to be."
"OK well hurry up and finish eating. We have three hours before my presentation. You still want to put in applications right?" she asked walking towards the sink.
"Yea," I said before stuffing my mouth. After eating we headed to Forks and I put in applications. There was a small clothing store, a dinner, and McDonalds. They all seemed promising. Ava dropped me off back at home before heading to Seattle. She had a major presentation to present for her company. It was Friday and I didn't have classes so time was going by to slow. I needed to do something. After scrolling through the channels I grabbed my phone. Caleb was still in school so I couldn't call him. I dialed Embry's number without a second thought.
Hey this is Embry; I'm not available leave a message BEEP
"Hey Embry it's me…Mila…I was wondering if you wanted to go see a movie tonight. Or maybe go grab something to eat. Call me back."
I started chewing on my cheek as I hung up. It was a nervous habit. I felt like something was wrong but I didn't know what. Instead of sitting and staring at the phone I made myself busy. I cleaned the house, did some laundry, and started dinner. Jeff was coming back home for his week off later and I figured Ava would want dinner as soon as she came in. Jeff came home exhausted.
"Dinner will be ready in about an hour. I hope you like pot roast and potatoes." I called behind Jeff as he went into the bathroom. Right before dinner was done, Ava walked in and I was surprised to see Embry behind her. I ran over and gave him a hug. He wrapped his arms around me but there was something different. This was different from how he hugged me last night. Before there was passion, a spark would flow through me. Now it was almost empty. I stepped back and looked at him. His eyes were sad.
"I didn't know you were coming over. You never called me back."
"I broke my phone last night. I didn't get another one yet."
"You and Jake get into a fight or something? You look like you lost your best friend," I said laughing. He didn't laugh with me. He didn't even crack a smile. I grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the front door.
"Foods done I'm going to talk to Embry," I yelled over my shoulder. We stepped outside and I walked off the porch, pulling Embry behind me. Eventually we fell into step with each other. As we walked he didn't say anything. It took me a while to find the foot trail but I did. I jumped on the trial when Embry grabbed my hand.
"I don't want to go up there." he said quietly.
"Ok but Embry what's wrong? You look like you just lost your best friend. What is it?"
He took a deep breath and turned his back to me. He was mumbled something under his breath. I stepped up and grabbed his arm. "I can't understand you with your back towards me Embry."
"My girlfriend is pregnant."
