Eighteen- Mila
I couldn't believe this was happening. But every time I looked down at my fingers it all came back. Embry had a girlfriend. And not only did he have a girlfriend, she was pregnant. I stomped up the porch and into the house. Ava and Jeff were sitting at the table. Embry walked in behind me.
"Mila, what's wrong?" Ava asked. I grabbed a rag and some ice out the freezer for my hand. Ava watched in horror as I put the ice in the rag. "Mila what happened?"
"What happened was Embry has a girlfriend, who's pregnant! Everybody who I thought cared about me or was a friend, you included, lied to me," I yelled "And I'm pretty sure my hand is broken."
"Mila I didn't know Embry had a pregnant girlfriend. Come on I'll take you to Sue's she can look at your hand."
"I'm not going to Sue's. I'm driving myself to the hospital in Forks," I said pushing past her. Ava and Embry followed behind me. I grabbed the keys from the key hook and walked outside.
"Mila you can't drive yourself," Embry said.
"Why are you still here Embry? Leave me alone!" I yelled at him. I hit the alarm on the car and opened the driver's door. Ava yanked the passenger door open and jumped inside.
"I'm not letting you drive yourself."
"Fine I'll walk," I said jumping back out the car. Ava followed behind me.
"Look Mila I know you're hurt but you can't walk to Forks. It's the middle of the night! If you don't want me or Embry to take you at least let Jeff drive you."
I stared at Embry and Ava. I wanted to tell them to go to hell. I wanted to be alone. But the throbbing in hand couldn't be ignored. Jeff came onto the porch and everybody was watching me.
"Fine," I mumbled before climbing in the car. Ava walked over to Jeff and told him what was going on. He nodded and walked down to the car. Embry was still standing in the walk way just staring at the car. I could feel him looking. I wanted to look at him. I wanted him to be in the car with me but I couldn't. Jeff climbed in the car and slowly headed out. I said I wasn't going to turn around and look at him. Instead I looked out the side view mirror.
Embry was standing, watching us pull away. The further we pulled away the tighter my chest got. Good thing I was headed to the hospital. Jeff was a man of few words. It normally bothered me but the silence was welcomed. He didn't ask what was wrong; he didn't ask about my hand, he didn't even ask why I was crying. He did exactly what I needed him to do and just offered me some tissue from his center console. When we got to the hospital Jeff pulled up to the door.
"I'm gonna go park then I'll come in."
I climbed out the car and walked into the emergency room. It wasn't crowded, which was a shock to me. Back in Michigan you could be waiting to see a doctor for as long as two hours. I was only sitting down for about five minutes when a nurse called me to the back. I followed her back and made myself comfortable on the gurney. She took my vitals, asked what was wrong, and then slid the curtain closed. Two seconds later the curtain was pulled open and a young doctor stepped in.
"Good evening. I'm Dr. Cullen," he said looking down at the clipboard he had in his hand. He was tall and had blonde hair. He looked up from the clipboard and smiled at me. Dr. Cullen looked like he belonged on a movie screen somewhere, not working second shift in a small hospital. His eyes were a weird shade of hazel, or maybe light brown, but they were weird. He sat the clipboard on the bed and grabbed one of the machines off the wall.
"What brought you in tonight Mila?" he asked. He turned the light on and slowly put it in front of my eyes.
"It's Me-la actually," he said My-la, "and I hurt my hand." Dr. Cullen finished looking in my eyes and put the machine back. He gently picked up my hand and I noticed two things. One his hand was cold, like really cold. It felt like he kept his hands in buckets of ice or something. The second thing was this weird desire to snatch my hand away from him. I knew he was a doctor and he wanted to help me but I had an underlying need to get as far away from him as I could. "You can relax," Dr. Cullen said. He gently squeezed from my wrist up to my fingertips. I winced out in pain when he checked two of my fingers.
"Alright Mila, I'll need an x-ray to confirm but I think you've fractured these two fingers here. I'll send a nurse over to take you to x-Ray."
Almost an hour later, I was walking into the waiting room. I had in fact fractured two fingers. Dr. Cullen put them in splints and gave me a few pain pills.
"Take these as needed and make an appointing with your primary care doctor in three days. If it swells up, starts bleeding, or goes numb and pale come right back here. Do you understand?"
"Got it."
"See you around Mila."
"Not anytime soon," I said. Dr. Cullen laughed before he grabbed another from the nurses station and went into the back. Je was sitting in one of the chairs, asleep. I didn't want to wake him but we had to get back. I gently shook him and let him know I was all set. By the time we made it back to La Push I just wanted to sleep. I took two pills and fell asleep.
One week…it had been officially one week since everything happened. They said time healed all wounds but I literally felt like shit. I had a cough that wouldn't go away, a chill I couldn't get rid of, and an ache in my chest. It didn't help that I was talking to nobody, except for Jeff. And even then that was at the bare minimal. I know he was getting tired of playing the middle man so I had started writing notes or texting Ava if I really needed anything. I would wake up to an empty house and made sure I was locked away in my room whenever Ava came back home from work. We literally were avoiding each other like the plague. I had even cut the girls off. Kim and Emily came over right after it happened. I gave them the same speech I gave Ava and they didn't come back. Instead they had taken to texting me but I still hadn't responded to anything. I hadn't even talked to Caleb which was a clear sign that I was more hurt than I originally thought.
I had been doing a good job of keeping myself busy with school but it was the end if the school trimester so I had a week of nothing to do. I had been looking forward to this break at first. I planned on Caleb coming out or going back to see him but now I didn't want to do anything. After spending hours on Facebook and Instagram, with no luck at distracting myself I decided to the next best thing; clean. That's all I had been doing and there really wasn't much to do. I had just finished cleaning my room and bathroom when the doorbell rang.
"Just a minute," I yelled as I ran down the steps to the door. I tried looking out the peephole but it was dark. I heisted before opening the door. This was the kind of stuff you saw in movies. A girl is home alone, opens the door, and is kidnapped or raped or murdered. And I knew nobody was coming to check on me since I made it clear I wanted all of them to stay away. I looked around for a weapon but there was nothing.
"Who is it?" I asked through the closed door.
"I have a delivery for a Mila-"
"It's Me-la," I said pulling the door open. Expecting to see a delivery man I was surprised to see Caleb.
"Oh my God!" I screamed and gave him a hug "What are you doing here?"
"Ava said you needed me and from the looks of things," he grabbed a strand of my hair and tugged at my t-shirt "She waited too long to call me. So are you going to let me in?"
I stepped aside and let him in the house. "This is nice," he said looking around. I gave him a tour then we sat down on the couch to talk. He filled me in on his mom's progress which was very good. Especially in the amount of time that had passed. We started talking about everything and nothing at the same time when I suddenly thought about something.
"Wait, how did you get here? I asked him.
"You can find an Uber driver to take you anywhere," he said. We fixed lunch and sat around watching TV. Caleb went to take a shower and I started gathering our dishes up. It was great seeing Caleb but I missed Embry. He called the first three days but after I told him stop, he didn't call or text again. I couldn't keep sitting around thinking about him. Even though I really really wanted to. I had just bagged up the last of the smaller trash cans in the house into one big bag. I stepped off the porch and headed over to the trash cans and turned to walk back in, when I saw something that made me freeze in my spot.
There was a wolf in the grass. Only this wasn't a normal wolf, it was huge. It was laying down, with its paws under its head. It was getting late and the sun was setting. If he decided to drag me off to the woods, nobody would know. "Shit!" I whispered. That wasn't a good idea because his head jerked up. We both stood completely still just staring at each other. It had grey fur with black spots. I held my hands up in front of me. "Please don't eat me."
I saw its eyes go to my hand that had the splints on it. It let out a whimper and bowed his head. I took this opportunity to run into the house. I locked the door and leaned against it, catching my breath. I looked out one of the windows and saw the wolf was gone. Just then the doorbell rang making me jump and scream.
"Hold on!" I yelled. I told myself to get it together and went to open the door. Leah, Emily, and Kim were standing on the porch. Kim and Emily had baskets in their hands.
"We come bringing peace offerings," Kim said. She held her basket out and pulled the small scrap off fabric off. There was food and a batch of brownies in her basket. Emily slipped her fabric back and I saw a collection of DVD's. I turned and looked at Leah. "What do you have?" Leah pulled her hands from behind her back and had two bottles of wine.
"And I've got more in the car, if you need it," she quickly added. I stood in the doorway not saying anything when Caleb grabbed my shoulders. He moved me to the side and let them in.
"Ladies thanks so much for coming over. Although I wasn't expecting to see you so quick. I'm Caleb," he said holding his hand out. Kim and Emily introduced themselves before shaking his hand; then walked into the living room. Caleb turned to Leah and put a huge smile on his face. "I'm Caleb," he said. Leah passed him the two bottle s she had in her hand then grabbed my hand and pulled me into the kitchen. After making sure we weren't followed she turned to look at me.
"Embry told me what happened. And I just wanted to say I apologize. I didn't know that Embry's girlfriend was pregnant. I also didn't know he was going to ask you out before he broke up with her. But Embry really does care about you. He just has a really fucked up way of showing it."
"You guys better not be talking about Embry! We are officially not talking about any of the guys. We have a great movie selection and even better food," Kim yelled from the living room. I couldn't have agreed more with Leah that Embry was fucked up. We walked into the living room and found Emily setting the food up on the coffee table. Kim stood in front of the TV. And Caleb was pouring glasses of wine.
"Ladies and Caleb, for our viewing pleasure tonight we have the classics! We have Bridesmaids, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Ugly Truth, He's Just Not that Into You, Mean Girls, and Clueless. Sorry Caleb I didn't know you would be here. So Mila what do you want to start with?"
I grabbed the glass of wine that Emily held out to me. "Mean Girls of course."
Movie night was great and just what I needed. Caleb watched Mean Girls but excused himself when he saw it was turning into a girl's night thing. We made it through two movies before Ava and Jeff came back. Jeff took one look at the scene and told Ava he would see her tomorrow. I thought Ava would have been mad I was drinking but she didn't say anything. Clueless was playing on the TV but we weren't watching. We were sharing stories about terrible dates/boyfriends. Well Ava and Leah were talking about it. Kim had only been with Jared and Emily was being really quiet. Ava had just finished a story about a guy who left her to pay a bill on a date after she told him she wasn't sleeping with him.
"Oh no Sam is hands down the worse!" Leah yelled "I mean we were together for a long time. I had imagined out wedding and everything Mila. Can you believe that? I thought he was going to propose but instead he broke up with me. And then a week later he started dating my cousin," Leah said before laughing. She had let go of the glass and was drinking straight from one of the bottles of wine. This was news to me. I had no idea that Sam hated dated Leah.
"Leah, come on now. I thought that was behind you," Kim said.
"It is Kim trust me it is," She took another swig "I am very happy for Sam and my cousin Emily. I mean they got married and they are such great leaders."
"Alright Leah I think you've had enough," Emily said standing up.
"NO" Leah yelled out "Emily I'm not mad at you or anything. I know it was the imprint but I when am I going to imprint? When am I going to get my happily ever after? Kim has hers, you have yours, even Mila has it! I should have it too! I deserve it!" Leah yelled out before bursting into tears. Emily walked over and tried to hug her but Leah pushed her away. She turned around and ran out the front door. We all sat on the couch, not moving. Kim looked worried and Emily looked like she wanted to cry.
"What the hell was that about?"" Caleb asked looking confused. I hadn't even noticed him come back into the living room.
"Is anybody going to go look for her?" I asked.
"She just needs some time to calm down," Ava said. She grabbed some dishes and walked into the kitchen. Kim and Emily followed suit, leaving me and Caleb confused about what had just happened. It was obvious that nobody wanted to talk about it. Leah had put a lot of stuff out there and I was kind of confused by everything. What the hell was 'the imprint' and how in the world could Leah be ok with her cousin and her ex being married? There was no way I would have been comfortable or ok with that.
They say a drunken mind speaks sober thoughts. Leah must have really felt that way and never let it out. She needed somebody to talk to. And even if I didn't know what was going on, she didn't need to be out after dark drunk and alone. Especially with big fucking wolves lounging in our backyards. I headed towards the back of the house, Caleb was right behind me. I held my fingers up to my mouth, letting him know to be quiet, and slowly opened the door.
I eased the door shut and quickly walked off the porch. Caleb followed behind me.
"You mind telling me what happened back there?"
"I don't know but I'm going to find Leah," I told him. She didn't take the keys so I knew she didn't drive off. I had no idea where to start looking for her. Caleb was walking right next to me but grabbed my hand when we got to the forest line.
"Umm where are you going?"
"I said I was going to look for Leah. Are you coming or not?"
"In there?" he asked pointing to the trees "No I'm not going in there. Did you forget about the last time you were in there? You almost died!"
"I did not almost die! I fell which I do a lot. Now I'm going to look for Leah whether you come or not."
"How do you even know she went this way?"
I really didn't have any idea if she went this way but if I said that to Caleb he wouldn't come with me. Or let me go.
"Because, there's a cliff that everybody around here goes to. It's like their spot. You know how we used to hang out at the skating rink? They hang out at the cliff."
Caleb stood looking at me with an eyebrow raised. He looked at the trees and back at the house. To the trees and back to the house. Finally he let out a sigh.
"One hundred paces in a straight line, that's as far as we go. If we don't find her by then we are turning around. I did not fly all the way out to Washington to go into the woods and die. Let's go," he said. I blew him a kiss and took two steps in the woods before I turned around.
"Wait a minute, did you just say one hundred paces? As in the Bakers wife one hundred paces? "
"Yes I did. I was watching Into the Woods before that god awful display of drunkenness happened."
"And that is exactly why you will never have a relationship."
"No I won't have a relationship because my best friend is always taking up my time doing crazy things. And she insisted on going to look for a grown woman in the middle of the woods right before the sun set. Start counting," he said looping his arm through mine.
"One…two…three…four….five…."
