Twenty-Two: Mila
It hurt to breathe. I wasn't even taking deep breaths but it hurt like hell. It was like an elephant was sitting on my chest or something. On top of not being able to breathe there was a steady beeping noise. It was annoying and I wanted it to stop. I slowly opened my eyes and looked around. The walls were a pale white and the stench of cleaning solution invaded my nose. I put my hand up to my nose and noticed the needle in my hand.
"What the hell," I mumbled. I looked around and saw Embry sitting in a chair beside me. He was asleep and looked way too big for the chair. I tried pushing myself up but the pain in my chest stopped me.
"Oh God," I said before falling back to the bed. Embry jumped up and looked at me. I hadn't seen him in days and he looked…different. The normal glow and smile he had were gone. His eyes looked sunken in, if that was even possible. He stared at me, not saying anything.
"Hi," I whispered to him.
"Hi," he whispered back. I didn't understand why he was all the way over there. Why hadn't he come over to me yet? I reached my hand out and saw the splints. It all came back to me, the fight, me breaking my fingers, the Girls night, Leah, Caleb...Caleb! I tried to sit up again but couldn't. Embry saw I was having trouble and walked over to me. He let the bed of the bed up and slipped a pillow behind my back.
"Caleb?! Where is he?" I asked. Embry looked hurt but quickly cleared his throat.
"Caleb is on his way down here with Ava. They went home to change clothes."
"How long have I have been here?"
"Two days."
"Two days!" I yelled at him. My throat was hurting and I started coughing. Which made my chest hurt even more. Embry grabbed a small cup and held the straw to my lips. The water was cold and felt so good going down.
"You need to take it easy Mila. You broke three ribs."
"What?"
"You and Caleb got lost in the woods. You fell and-"
"That's not what happened Embry. There was a woman, the same one I saw before. She was there and these two other guys and a pack of wolves!"
"Mila, calm down," Embry said. I could hear the beeping speeding up. The night flashed back in my mind. There was no way I made that up. It happened and I remembered it happening. She was pale and strong; and she had fangs! There was something going on in La Push.
"Embry you have to believe me. We didn't fall. We were attacked, well not attacked but we could have been. You believe me right?" I asked him slowly. I knew I wasn't crazy. I couldn't have made all that up. "Embry….please…you have to believe me." He took a deep breath and put on hand on my leg.
"You're awake!" Caleb yelled as he walked into the room. Ava, Kim, and Emily followed behind him.
"I told you, walking in the woods was horrible idea. We almost died falling down that trial," Caleb said hugging me. I couldn't lift my arms to hug him back of course. Did I really make all that up? Even Caleb was saying that I fell but that's not what I remembered. Caleb brushed my hair out of my face and stepped to the side. The girls all hugged me and stepped back.
"You can't keep getting hurt Mila," Kim said laughing. I smiled back at her. Embry had moved away from the bed and was standing by the door. A few minutes later Dr. Cullen came in the room. I was surprised to see him; I thought he was an ER doctor. He explained to me I had fractured three ribs when I fell. He also explained the different pills that I was to take. I was going to be on bed rest for a week and limited movement for at least the next month.
"When can I go home?" I asked Dr. Cullen after he finished his speech. He came over and pulled out his stethoscope. He put it to chest and listened. I tried no to change up my breathing. I was used to taking deep breaths but that was impossible. Dr. Cullen lifted my arm slightly and ran his fingers down my side. The coldness was still there but was welcomed.
"You should be good to go. I'll have the nurse draw up your discharge papers. I'm gonna give you my card. Call me if anything changes", he said putting the card in my hand. I smiled and thanked him. Caleb and Kim helped me get out the bed, and into the wheelchair that was brought around.
"Embry, can you push her out?" Ava asked "Our hands are full," she said. I turned and saw Caleb and Kim were holding a flower vase. Ava had a bag of clothes. It was obvious they were trying to push us together, for what I had no idea. Embry still had a pregnant girlfriend. He walked over and slowly pushed me down the hall. Getting in the car was a challenge. I wanted to do it on my own but every move felt like I was being ripped open.
"Let me help you," Embry said. He gently picked me up out the chair and placed me in the back seat of the car. I don't know if it was just because it was him or if he was really that nice but I didn't feel any pain. Kim and Ava climbed in the front and Caleb sat in the back with me. I wanted to ask Embry to sit next to me but I was sure he had something to do.
"Thank you for all your help," I said before looking ahead. Embry paused for a minute. "You're welcome. Get better Mila." He shut the door and headed towards what I guessed was the parking lot. I wanted him to stay with me but I wasn't going to ask him. He had a bunch of stuff going on, stuff that I wasn't ready to deal with. I'm trying to make it through high school, and baby mama drama isn't going to help me. As we headed back home, I could feel Caleb staring at me.
"What?" I said annoyed, not bothering to turn around and look at him.
"I'm just trying to figure out why you didn't ask Embry to come back with us."
"Because Embry has a life of his own."
"A life that he stopped when you ended up in the hospital. You know he came down every day just to sit with you. From start to end of visiting hours."
"First off," I said turning to him "We were in the hospital. Second I didn't ask him to stop anything. Third just drop this whole Embry thing. It isn't going to happen…ever."
"First you were I was discharged the night we were brought in. Second you're right he didn't have to but he did, which mean he cares. Third I will not drop anything. You haven't thought about or even entertained anybody, man or boy, since Brandon. And now you have a man who is practically in love with you and you won't give him the time of day! I'm still not sure about that either. You never talk about it."
Caleb was right. I hadn't told him about Embry, just that I wasn't talking to the girls. He had been asking me what happened, because he thought Embry was this great guy. Which he was, he was amazing, even if he did make messed up decisions. Just getting to look at him made me feel better. Caleb sat looking and waiting for me to talk to him, but I couldn't. I didn't want to talk about Embry or Brandon or anybody. I just wanted to sleep. I looked out the window for the rest of the ride home. After hobbling up the front steps and into the living room, I pulled out two of the small bottles that Dr. Cullen had given me. I looked at the label and popped the top off. The bottle said take one pill every six hours as needed for pain.
I quickly threw one in my mouth and sat the bottle on the end table behind my head. Caleb and Ava were in the kitchen, laughing and cooking. They had become close since he came out to visit. I wondered when he was going home. It didn't take long for the pill to kick in. It was stronger than I thought because as soon as the sense of euphoria hit, I passed out.
The music was loud but it was fine. The last official party of the summer, and it was going to be amazing. As we pulled up in front of the house, I looked out and saw the crowd of people. It sucked the Caleb couldn't be here with me. The party was invite only and I was one of the few high school students who got invited. I made the cut and it was amazing. Brandon grabbed my hand and kissed it before giving me that signature smile. I still couldn't believe it, Brand Lee had asked me out and he brought me to the biggest party of the school year.
We stepped into the house and my smile got bigger. Everybody was stopping Brandon to speak. He made sure to introduce me to every person. I let him know I was going to the bathroom and Brandon said he was going to get our drinks. As I made my way through the crowd, I still couldn't believe that I was there.
"Here you go," he said passing me the cup. The liquid was red. As soon as it passed my lips, I felt my body warming up. We danced, we laughed, and then we kissed. And kissed….and kissed again. I closed my eyes and took it all in. When I opened them I wasn't in the crowded living room anymore. The room was dark. I looked over and saw Brandon leaning on a desk. When he got closer to the bed, I saw he didn't have his shirt on. What was going on? I closed my eyes.
When I opened them this time, Brandon was on top of me. Earlier in the night his touch gave me goose bumps, now it made me want to throw up. "Stop is Brandon; let me go…Stop it" I closed my eyes. Eyes open Brandon is being pulled off me. Yes, I'm going to be alright. "Thank you…thank you…" I said through my tears. I stood up and wobbled over to the door. It didn't look far but with every step it seemed like the door was moving farther away from me.
"Time for round 2," my savior said grabbing my arm. I started screaming. The music is loud, nobody can hear me. He throws me down on the bed and I start kicking and punching. One lucky punch lands and he rolls off me onto the floor. I jumped up and run to the door. "Help me," I screamed pulling it up. The hallway is empty, the entire house is empty. This can't be. I can't go back in the room, so I start running down the hallway. The first door I open is to a bathroom. I pull it shut and hear somebody screaming my name. Brandon and the not-so-good savior step out in the hallway looking for me.
I grabbed the next door and flung it open, throwing it shut behind me. This can't be happening to me. I covered my mouth, hoping they can't hear me breathing as I crouched in the closet.
"You smell divine," a voice whispers in my ear. I let out the loudest scream and push the closet door open. The room is gone and all I can see is forest. Sabrina grabs me and pulls me close to her. She took a deep breath and shuddered.
"I was going to kill you. Just like they killed my Jackson but I've thought of something so much better," she starts to laugh "I'm going to turn you. The fact that you're precious mutt can't be with you will be torture for him. And that's so much better." She reached up and stroked my head. "This will hurt a little."
She opened her mouth and I screamed as I felt her fangs pierce my neck.
"MILA…MILA…MILA!"
My eyes fly open. Caleb is standing over me, his eyes wide. The room started to focus and I could see that I was at home, on the couch. I reached up and started feeling my neck.
"Mila are you ok?"
"I'm fine…I just had a bad dream that's all."
"Was it about Brandon?" Caleb asked sitting next to me. I shook my head no even though he was there. I noticed the news was playing on the muted TV screen. It was after six which meant I had been sleeping for the better part of seven hours. Slowly I eased up the couch and pointed to my laptop. "Caleb I need my laptop."
"No you need to eat," Ava cut in. She came into the living room carrying a tray. There were two plates of food on it and a tall glass of something to drink. She sat the tray in front of me and passed me the remote. I wasn't interested in TV so I gave Caleb the remote. He channel surfed for a minute before deciding on the latest mystery show on TV. Ava made it a point to hover around until I had eaten half of my food. Once she was satisfied, she took the tray away and passed me the computer. I had no idea what I was looking for or where to start. There had to be something out there that could help me understand what was going on.
After about ten minutes, I smiled as I looked at the book for sale on eBay. It was a book on the legends of the Quileute tribe. And for the price of 27.99 I could own it. I checked the sellers reviews and when I was happy with them, I made the purchase. The confirmation popped up on the screen and told me that I would be the proud owner of the book in 5-7 days. I didn't know what I was going to find out but this book would be a step in the right direction.
