Twenty-Three: Embry
Mila hadn't kicked me out when she opened her eyes. She actually looked happy to see me, somewhat. But she hadn't called since she'd gotten home from the hospital. The only way I knew how she was doing was the updates Ava was giving me. The days I spent with her made me feel so much better. And now I was back to feeling and looking horrible. Time was going by so fast, one day Bree went to sleep with a flat stomach and woke up with a small belly. There was no denying it anymore, she was about to have my baby. My mother was so happy when I told her, she started crying. Bree's parents asked about a wedding. Bree told them we were just focused on the baby shower and getting the house ready for the baby.
Truth was she had mentioned us getting married at least three times a week. And every time I changed the subject. I told her it wasn't the right time and it wasn't. I was trying to figure out this whole imprint thing and we had a psycho leech to worry about. Jake and Seth had met with the Cullen's and the news they brought back was not good. Sabrina and Jackson were mates and had been together for at least two decades. Sabrina and Emmett went way back. She was turned right after he was. She was sweet on Emmett but when the affections weren't returned she went all rouge. She left Emmett and his family and went off on her own. She was passing through with Jackson and his small family when she came across Mila.
Jake said that Mila was a singer. Her blood smelled so good to Sabrina that it sung to her. She wanted to get her but we interrupted her first attempt. Jackson wanted to leave but Sabrina wouldn't agree to it. So when the family said they were tired of her going on and on about Mila, there was a divide. Jackson and Sabrina stayed everyone else left. Everything was fine until we killed Jackson. Sabrina realized not only was Mila a singer she was protected by the pack. She didn't know why but she knew that she had to have her. She wasn't going to stop until she got her or she was killed. Problem was Sabrina had incredible speed and tracking skills. She also was able to touch someone and see their entire past.
Jake assured me that Emmett and the rest of his family would help us get rid of her. He also said Emmett was trying to convince Jackson's family to come back and help. So far they had refused, saying they already took a chance by talking to Emmett when he showed up. I didn't doubt the Cullens would come and help but the longer Sabrina was out there the more I was worried about Mila. Worrying about Mila was taking away from me worrying about Bree. I thought I had been doing a pretty good job at hiding it but I was wrong.
I had just come home from patrol when I found Bree sitting on the couch. A jar of pickles sat open on the table in front of her. Baby magazines covered the couch. I picked one up and sat down next to her. "This one looks nice," I said pointing to a play pen she had circled. Bree took a bit out of her pickle and continued looking in the baby book. She had a highlighter in one hand a pickle in the other. I flipped through the magazine and stop at the crib section. This is highway robbery! They charge $500 for a crib. I could ask Seth to make me one for less than that and it will look way better.
"I was thinking that I could ask Seth to make a crib or whatever else furniture we need for the baby's room."
"Where you now?" she said flipping the page. She highlighted a line then took a bite of her pickle. I sat the book down and turned to face her. Bree kept her head down reading her book. Her small bump sat center between her folded legs. She highlighted another sentence in the book before turning the page. "What are you reading?"
"What to expect when you're expecting," she said. The highlighter went across another sentence.
"Is it interesting?"
"Very," she takes a bite of her pickle.
"Alright Bree what's going on?"
"Nothing at all Embry. I'm just surprised that you're actually showing interest in me or the baby."
"What are you talking about? I've gone to appointments, shopping; I even started working on the room!"
"And through all that you still find time to check on Mila," she said. "I heard you on the phone talking about her."
"We're a little old for you to be spying on me Bree."
"I wasn't spying. You were talking loudly I might add and I overheard you. It's bad enough I have to compete with Jake for your time but I'm competing with a little girl Embry! You have no idea how that makes me feel."
I knew that eventually the increase in patrols was going to affect Bree. She played it off often, saying she was fine but I knew she wasn't. It had been almost two weeks and we still hadn't managed to catch Sabrina. Every time we thought we were close she would get the slip on us. She must have known about the treaty because she made it a point to cross over, often. The Cullens were doing all they could but even they weren't a match for her.
"Look Bree you are in competition with a little girl," I said. You could never be in competition with her because there is no competition with her, I thought to myself. I didn't say that of course. Bree was literally one word away from tears these days. "There is no competition. I'm with you not her."
"Embry you've said her name in your sleep. You literally ran out the house when her name was mentioned. You aren't with me because you want to. You were going to leave me before I told you I was pregnant!" Bree jumped up from the couch and walked into the kitchen. She started slamming drawers and cabinets. This was just great, she was pissed off. When I walked into the kitchen she threw a skillet on the stove. I walked over to her but she moved away from me. She stomped over to the refrigerator and yanked it open.
"I'm making steak and potatoes for dinner," she said pulling out a package of steak. She brushed past me and threw it on the table. When she went to sit the potatoes out, I grabbed her hands. She kept her face down but I could smell the tears falling down her face. I pulled her head up so she could look at me.
"Bree listen-"
"Embry just stop," she said shaking her head "All you do is make excuses and defend yourself. I don't know what happened to us but everything is different. You're different. I will not play second to her. My child will not play second."
"Your child?" I asked confused.
"Yes my child Embry. You didn't even want it! You are never here with me when I get home. You haven't sat down and just talked to me since we found out it was official. Do you even know how far along I am?" she asked me. I opened my mouth and then closed it. I wasn't exactly sure but I knew it hadn't ben that long since we found out.
"Two months?" I asked unsure.
"I'm 3 months Embry. And if you were around like you should be, then you would know that. But you aren't here and you don't know. I can't do this anymore Embry."
"What are you saying Bree?"
"I'm saying that I'm moving out."
I couldn't believe that she was saying this. When I told her I wanted her to break up, she was fighting it. Now she was standing in front of me saying she wanted to break up with me. Bree yanked her hands out of mine and let out a chuckle.
"People that really want to be in relationships normally say don't go at that point. I'm going to my parents tonight and I'm going to have my stuff out of here by the end of next week." She walked out the kitchen. I knew I should have chased after her. But I couldn't move my feet. I didn't want to chase after her. I knew she wasn't the person I needed to be with and I couldn't keep forcing it. Forcing it had gotten us this far. I put the food back in the fridge and did the one thing that always made me feel better. I phased and ran.
