Sorry that this update took so long! My birthday weekend was so crazy but it was fun! And my new position at work is a tad bit more time consuming. Thanks for all the follows and the favorites! I really appreciate all of them.
Twenty-Eight: Embry
I always hated the couples that did everything together; the ones that couldn't keep their hands off each other. The ones that were so into each other they oozed love. I saw it when I was with Sam and Emily. I almost threw up when I saw it with Nessie and Jake. And once Claire was old enough, I hated it with her and Quinn. But now I had Mila. And sure we weren't a couple or anything but we were always together. Everything was different now. I wasn't stressed about not having anybody to talk to. My mom commented on how much happier I seemed and that I looked different. And I felt different too.
Colors looked brighter, everything smelled better. That probably sounds crazy seeing how I'm a wolf. And everything changed when I changed but now with Mila in my life, it was amazing. Christmas was coming up and we had decided that we weren't going to do anything. But the more I thought about it, the more I couldn't let this holiday go by. This was Christmas. It was a big thing in relationships…or whatever it was that I and Mila had. Mila was a very simple girl. She didn't want or require much which made her impossible to shop for. I planned on getting her clothes or shoes or something like that; but after talking to Leah and Ava decided that wasn't the best bet. Instead I had gotten Seth to carve her a book shelf for my house. And I went to four different book stores getting a bunch of different books for her. I knew when she saw it she was going to love it.
I had one more store to stop at before I could get home. The good thing about Mila not living with me was I didn't have a hard time hiding her gifts. I also had Claire's twins make her a bracelet. There was a wolf dangling from it. I really hoped that she would like it. I had never put this much effort into a holiday and I was really looking forward to it. I was looking for a book when I smelled her.
"Embry," she said. I turned around and smiled at her. Even though we weren't together anymore, Bree looked good.
"Hello Bree," I said to her. She smiled and ran her hand across her stomach. It was finally obvious that she was pregnant. She looked down at the books and then back up at me.
"You're reading now?" she asked me surprised. I looked down at the books and back up to her. This could get awkward.
"There for Mila actually."
"Oh the infamous Mila," she said with a chuckle "So when do I get to meet her?"
"You already met her Bree."
"No I mean really meet her. I need to get to know. You've made it obvious that she's the one you're going to be with. I need to know who our son will be around," Bree said. My mouth dropped open. Bree smiled and went into her purse. She passed me an ultrasound picture. The words 'it's a boy' were typed in right in the middle. "I was going to give you this in your own baby book which is why I'm here." I looked at the picture and then back at her. I held my hand out and took a step before stopping and looking at her. She grabbed my hand and slowly put it on her stomach.
It's hard to describe what I felt. The only word I could think of was amazing. Suddenly I felt a small bump on my hand. Bree laughed when I gasped.
"He's moving around," she looked down at her watch "Its lunch time for us. You can keep the picture."
"Why didn't you tell me about the ultrasound appointment?"
"I didn't think you cared honestly. I haven't heard from you since I moved out. But I…we've been fine." Bree still had a smile on her face but I could see the pain in her eyes. I had text her once but I couldn't remember if she responded or not. It wasn't that I didn't care or didn't want to be there for her. I just hadn't noticed her at all. There was nothing that I could say to her to justify it. But I didn't want to turn into my dad. I could only imagine my mom standing and talking to my dad like Bree was talking to me. Did my mom feel how Bree felt when my dad walked away? Did she even get the chance to tell him how she really felt? I had always said I never wanted kids. But whether I wanted to or not, the kid was coming. My son was going to be here and I refused to make the same mistakes my dad did. I had been telling myself that I was going to make it work with Mila and with Bree. Mila had said she couldn't accept me and not Bree. I had to make Bree comfortable with me again. If I was going to be a part of my son's life, I had to make sure his mother was ok.
"Do you want to grab lunch? We can talk about the baby. You can tell me what I've missed."
"I would like that," Bree said smiling at me "He's dying for a milkshake and a big juicy burger."
"I know a great place," I said following her out of the store.
We ended up at a small roadside dinner outside of La Push. I could have taken Bree to the dinner by the Rez but I didn't want to run into anybody, especially the imprints. Mila and I weren't together but being an imprint made everything different. I didn't want to risk anybody seeing me with Bree and assuming the worse. We were in a good space and I wasn't sure if we would be able to bounce back if anything else happened. So I drove 30 minutes out of the way just to have a peaceful meal with Bree.
It was awkward at first. I didn't know what to say and it seemed Bree had the same problem. We both sat across from each other not saying anything. Bree kept looking out the window and I was looking at the table. After we placed our orders we sat in silence again. Finally I cleared my throat.
"So a boy huh?" I asked her. Bree nodded but went looking back out the window. "So I was thinking we could name him Embry Jr."
"That's funny because I wanted to name him after my father."
"Clarence is kind of an old name don't you think?"
"Well how about Andrew? Or Ryan? Ryan is a good name," Bree said smiling at me. I shook my head no and started running down names I liked. She shot every one of them down until I asked about the name Evan. The waitress came back with our food when Bree started trying to think of middle names. She sat down the small cup of mayonnaise. Bree thanked her and grabbed a French fry. I watched in complete horror as she dipped it and then bit it. How in the world could she eat that? Bree dipped the other half of the fry in the mayo and held it out to me. I shook my head no. There was no way I was going to eat a fry dipped in mayo. It wasn't anything I had the desire to taste.
"Come on Embry. Evan loves French fries and mayo," she said leaning over towards me. Slowly she waved the fry back and forth in front of me. I knew she wasn't going to quit. So I closed my eyes and opened my mouth. She dropped the fry on my tongue and I started to chew. It actually wasn't that bad. We started to eat and everything was going fine until my phone started to go off. Mila had said she wanted to stand out. While everyone has the generic chimes for texts; Mila had programed the song "Everything has changed". Bree had just finished showing me the other ultrasound pictures and was going in her bag to pull out her baby binder as she called it. Inside this binder was everything she wanted for Evan.
"Cause all I know is we said hello. And your eyes looked like coming home. All I know is a simple name, everything has changed. All I know is you held the door. You'll be mine and I'll be yours. All I know since yesterday is everything has changed."
I reached in my pocket and pulled it out. I read the text and slipped it back into my pocket.
"That's a cute song," Bree said pulling the binder back to her. I reached out and stopped her.
"Let me see what you got there," I said to her. Bree stared at me for a minute before releasing the binder. I took it back and started flipping through the pages. It seemed like Bree had really thought everything out. She already had all the baby furniture picked out and apparently felt like an animal theme was the best for his room. As I looked at the crib and even the small dresser I noticed they were all made of wood. If they were made of wood, that meant that Seth could make them. Not only could he make them, it would be cheaper than the 1,000 bucks this company was asking for. I knew that I had mentioned it to Bree before and she hadn't been that receptive to it.
"So you really set on this furniture huh?" I asked her. I flipped through more pages and looked at what she had put together. Bree shrugged her shoulders and sipped on her milkshake. A few seconds later I heard the familiar slurping of an empty glass. I motioned for the waitress and asked her to bring me another milkshake and more fries.
"I'm finally eating as much as you do," Bree said taking the last bite of her burger. We both laughed at that. Most of the time when we were together I would always be telling Bree she needed to eat more. And she was always telling me that I needed to eat less. Now here we were actually enjoying a meal together. The waitress came and brought out the food. Bree dug right into the milkshake. I dipped a fry in the mayonnaise and took a bite.
"See I told you it was good," Bree said following suit. "So I was wondering if it would be ok to have the baby shower at your place. My apartment is way too small. And I want everybody to feel comfortable."
"Umm sure that should be fine. I'll ask Mila what she thinks about it."
"So are you guys together now?"
"Not together…together."
"I just assumed you were. Kim told me you guys spent a lot of time together." Bree said. She took another sip of her milkshake and the awkward silence was back. See that was why I took Bree to eat so far from La Push. If Kim or Emily or anybody had seen us they would have ran back and told Mila. Just like Kim told Bree that Mila and I were together. I mean sure I wanted us to be together one day and we spent almost every day together but I didn't want Bree to be hurt. And that's exactly how she looked sitting across from me. She looked hurt and it was all my fault. Well it was the Spirits fault. Why couldn't they have brought Mila into my life before I met Bree. It would have made everything so much better. But then again I couldn't blame anybody but myself. I knew there was a chance I would imprint one day. Instead of waiting or moving on when I realized Bree wasn't the one, I stayed around. I let her think she had found the perfect guy and I wasn't her perfect guy.
"Bree," I grabbed her hand "I know I've said I'm sorry so many times before. I wish that I could explain everything to you. It wasn't you. It was me. I know that sounds so cliché but it's the truth. I couldn't help it. The-"
My phone started going off. I pulled it out and saw Collin was calling. I had to tell Bree how I felt. The sooner I got it out the better everything would be. I silenced it the looked back at Bree. I cleared my throat when my phone started going off again. Leah was calling me now. I quickly silenced it again and looked back to Bree. I took a deep breath and my phone started going off again. I looked down at saw Jake's name flashing across the screen. I held the phone up so Bree could see it before holding up a finger.
"Jake I'm kina busy right now. Can you let the pa-everybody know that I'm not on shift right now? Leah and Seth just called me."
"Where are you?" Jake asked me.
"I'm having lunch right now."
"You need to get back now. I'm calling an emergency meeting right now. We're meeting by the treaty line."
Jake didn't wait for me to agree. I could feel the slight squeeze in my chest. It was an Alpha command which could only mean one thing; there was some trouble going on. I hung up and looked at Bree.
"I have to go. There's this thing with-"
"Work," Bree cut me off. She grabbed the binder and slipped it in her bag before standing up. I threw money on the table and followed her outside to our cars. I had offered to drive but Bree insisted on driving her own car. It was a good thing she had too. Whatever was going on, I needed to get back now. Jake would have flipped if I was any later than I was pretty sure I already was. We had parked right next to one another. Bree threw her purse in the front seat. She turned to me and held her arms out. I leaned in and gave her a hug.
"A word of advice Embry, no girl likes to play second to anybody let alone anything. If you can't tell Mila what's really going on with work then maybe you should leave her alone. She's young and unlike me she won't be able to handle a heartbreak of knowing work is you're boyfriends first love." She kissed my cheek and slid into her car. I waited until she pulled off before jumping in my car and heading back to La Push. I would have gotten there faster if I phased but I didn't want to have to come back and get my car.
I parked my car and at home and phased to meet up with the pack. I didn't know what was going on but I was kind of worried.
Does anybody know what's going on? I asked. I wasn't sure who was phased but somebody had to hear me.
I have no clue. Why didn't you pick up when I called you? Collin asked me.
I was with Bree.
WHAT? What were you doing with her? Does Mila know about this?" Collin yelled at me.
Bree is having my kid remember? We were talking about baby stuff. I thought about the lunch so she could see nothing happened. And I will tell Mila myself.
Dude you have so much going on. I hope when I imprint it's not half was as complicated. Brady cut into the conversation.
Does anybody know what's going on? Jared asked.
Everybody is in the dark right now. Collin said.
We reached the clearing and found Jake, Leah, Sam already there. They were in human form. We all phased out and ran over. Seth came out of the woods and stood behind Jake. Suddenly Carlisle appeared in front of us. If Carlisle was here and on our land, something was terribly wrong.
"Thank you for meeting me here." Carlisle said.
"What is going on?"
"Earlier this evening when I was on shift at the hospital, I had two people brought in. It was called in as a car accident but when I saw them, I knew it was something different. I think they were attacked by a vampire."
"Are you sure?" Sam asked him.
"Yes. I don't know if we are looking at another newborn war or not."
"You said they were brought in to the hospital. If this was a newborn war wouldn't their creator have kept them?" Leah asked. She had a point. When we dealt with the newborns people came up missing. They never made it to the hospital.
"Yes they would have. But we had two victims at the same time. The corner is saying they were attacked before they were found. But when I saw I knew that a vampire had gotten to them first."
"Is it Sabrina?" I asked.
"I believe it is." Carlisle said. We all stood gathering our thoughts.
"Carlisle you have to tell them the truth," a soft voice said. Alice had appeared out of nowhere. She looked at us.
"It is Sabrina. I saw her when she decided to attack."
"And you didn't tell us?" Leah yelled at her. She tried to get to Alice but Jake and Seth grabbed her arms. Alice didn't move or flinch.
"The decision was made when she was literally on top of them. You wouldn't have made it in time. Sabrina has decided that you all must pay for taking her mate from her. But she's not going to kill the wolves. She's going to hurt the ones you are closest to."
Just thinking about all our imprints being hurt made us all angry. Growls came from all of us. If Sabrina thought she could take our imprints she was mistaken. There was no way we were going to let that happen.
"I assure you we will continue to try and stop her," Carlisle said.
"We appreciate the information," Jake said. "She's not going to get the imprints." He said looking at each one of us. We all nodded in agreement.
"It's the imprints that she's worried about right now." Alice said.
"But you just said she's going to hurt the ones closest to us," Jared said.
"Yes I did. I said she's going to hurt the ones you are closest. She's going to hurt the imprints in some way. Which means-"
Leah's phone started to ring. She stepped away to answer it.
"Hey mom, I'm at work. What's up?" Leah said. Being a wolf we couldn't stop always stop things. I've never really wished that I could either. It was cool being as fast, strong, and having sharpened senses. But when Sue spoke again, I wished that I was just a normal man.
"Leah sweetie you need to get home. Ava's been in an accident."
As soon as I heard Sue I turned back to Alice. Sabrina wasn't going after the imprints. She was going after people that our imprints cared about. I didn't know why she was doing it. It didn't make any sense.
"Where is Mila?" I asked Alice.
"Nessie took her home about ten minutes ago."
I turned around and ran straight into the woods. I needed to get to Mila. When I got close to the house, I could hear voices. There were other people at the house. Some of them I recognized others I had no idea who they were.
"Stop Mila! Ava is dead! She's gone and she's not coming back. I came in here to be alone." I heard Jeff yell. This wasn't good. I knew that Mila was going to run. She always ran when she was stressed, scared, or felt overwhelmed. A door slammed and cherries hit my nose. I ran around the house and found her. I reached out and grabbed her arm. She turned and tried to fight me so I pulled her closer to me. When she realized it was me, she stopped and looked at me. Her eyes were red and puffy. I had no idea how long she had been crying.
"I'm so sorry Mila," I said. Her shoulders started shaking and she let out the loudest wail I had heard from her. Her shoulders were shaking and she fell in my arms. I picked her up and pulled her close to my chest. I would have taken her home but I figured that was the last place she wanted to go. So I headed back towards my house.
"Sssssshhhh Mila. It's going to be ok," I whispered to her. I sat her down on the couch and was about to walk away when she grabbed my hand.
"Don't go," Mila whispered to me. "Stay with me please. I don't want to be alone."
"Sure," I whispered and slid on the couch next to her. Mila scooted closer to me and laid her head on my chest. It wasn't long before it was getting wet with her tears.
"Ava's dead Embry. Everybody I love leaves me. My mom left me, my dad left, and Ava…he took Ava from me," she said before bursting into tears. "You're gonna leave me too Embry."
"I'm not going to leave you Mila. I promise I won't leave you. I'm never going to leave you."
Ok Spirits, I know that this is my imprint. I know that we are supposed to make each other better but why is this so hard? Why can't we just be like everybody else? None of the other imprints and wolves have had to deal with as much as us. What's with all the tests? We already know what's going to happen. We needed a break and I couldn't wait until we got the break we deserved.
I really hope you guys liked this chapter! I am trying my hardest to get chapters written an up. Please…please….please…just hang in there with me! I'm writing as fast as I can. But I want the chapters to be really great for you all.
