Thirty-One Mila
The great thing about online classes, I could work at my own pace. If I finished I could move ahead. And I did it often. The bad thing was when I'm done, I'm done. There is really no asking for more work. And when I'm done I'm bored. Especially when Embry is gone. And he's been gone a lot lately. Between patrolling, working at the shop, trying to catch Sabrina, and Bree I felt like I never saw him. I could handle the patrol increases and more hours at the shops. I knew he was trying to make a nice amount of money before the baby got here but dealing with Bree was slowly starting to drive me insane.
She was somewhat cordial in the beginning. But La Push is small, word gets around. I spent the first three weeks after getting the ring, explaining to people that Embry and I weren't engaged. I told Bree the same thing. She smiled and said everything was fine. Embry was glad it was cool but I knew better. I mean I may be young but I'm still a woman. And as woman I could detect the cattiness in her tone and the look in her eyes didn't match the smile on her face. And it wasn't long before I realized how right I was about her. I went from hardly ever seeing her till her showing up to the house at least twice a week, baby shower binder in tow. It was starting to annoy me but I didn't tell Embry. I was there and smiling when I needed to be. But things are slowly getting hard for me to deal with.
Just last night she called telling Embry she wasn't feeling well. He went running of course, promising he would be back "soon". So I waited for him to get back. We had plans to go the movies and out to dinner. It was his first night off patrol in a week. And I was excited! What I assumed would be no more than twenty minutes ended up being an hour and half. An hour after he left, I changed into my pajamas and started reading up for school. I ended up falling asleep. The sound of his car door woke me up. I could hear his footsteps. I wanted to get up and hug him but I was mad. Instead I paced my breathing and pretended I was asleep. "Mila," I heard him whisper. I didn't say anything but I knew he knew I wasn't asleep. He slept on the couch that night. I woke up and found myself alone in the house.
Embry was gone to work or something. I really didn't know. I had just finished up with my last assignment when there was a knock on the door. I opened the door to see there was nobody there. Instead there was a white box sitting on the porch. I looked around before picking it up. I had no idea what it was and I was a little hesitant about opening it. I sat the box on the table and opened it up. There was a small envelope with my name on it, on top of white tissue paper. I reached down and opened it up.
Mila,
Tonight it's all about you. Please be ready at exactly 6 tonight. See you then.
Love, Embry
I smiled as I read the note again. This was why I loved him. He always knew what to say. I sat the note to the side and moved the tissue paper out of the way. I pulled out a black and white cocktail dress. Under the drees there was a pair of black booties. I looked at the clock and saw I had a little over three hours until it was time to go. That left me more than enough time to shower and run into to town and get my hair and nails done. Embry wouldn't care either way but I could still make sure I looked good for him right? I grabbed the keys from the table and headed out.
I made it home with twenty minutes to spare. Embry still hadn't come home. As I slipped into the dress I couldn't help but to smile. I was finally living out the storylines that I read about in the books. I wanted to wear the bracelet that the girls had given me but it didn't match. I slipped it off for the first time since I got it and sat it on the dresser. I put a small pair of earrings on and a bracelet of Ava's that Jeff had given me. I followed that up with a quick spray or two of my favorite perfume. I had just slid my feet into the shoes when I heard the front door open. I gave myself one more look over in the mirror before heading into the living room. I stared smiling as I thought about seeing Embry.
Embry had his back to me. My smile grew bigger, if it was possible, just looking at him. As if he knew I was behind him he quickly turned around. A look of shock was on his face. I smiled and ran my hands over the front of the dress. Embry stood, still not saying anything. The longer I waited for him to say something the more the look on his face started to change. It wasn't shock; it was starting to look like he had forgotten.
"You look cute Mila."
There was no way I was hearing that voice. Embry's eye's quickly darted to the door. I followed his gaze and saw my worst nightmare standing in the door way. Bree wobbled inside and right over to the couch. I watched in disbelief. First off she was much bigger than the last time I saw her. I swear she went from looking bloated to full fledge beach ball under shirt. Second, she was here…in my house…on what was supposed to be date night. I turned around and went back into the bedroom. I shut the door and started taking deep breaths while pacing back and forth. My hands would not stop shaking. I slowed my breathing down and gripped the dresser.
"Mila I can explain," Embry said as soon as he opened the door. I closed my eyes and let my head fall down. I didn't want to hear anything he had to say really. If I wasn't fighting patrols and work for his time, I was fighting Bree. This wasn't fair at all.
"I would love to hear this," I said turning to look at him. I crossed my arms over my chest and waited.
"The Dr. told Bree the baby is too small for 30 weeks. He asked her if she was stressed and she said yes. So he put her on bed rest. She's been on for the past couple days but things were getting a little crazy at her place. She lives in an apartment with her parents and her little sister. She called me crying and asked if she could stay the night here. She just needs a break from home. That's all."
I closed my eyes and shook my head. I was trying to be supportive, I really was. But this was getting ridiculous. This was supposed to be my night. I sat on the bed and slipped one of my shoes off. I had just washed all our sheets a couple days ago. Good thing too, since I would probably be sleeping on the couch for the night. I wasn't going to let Bree sleep on the couch when she was so big.
"What are you doing?"
"No need to stay all dressed up if we aren't going anywhere."
"We're still going out Mila. I told you tonight is all about you and I meant that." Embry said to me. I sat on the bed confused. He took the shoe out of my hand and kneeled down. His fingertips tickled the bottom of my foot. I giggled and tried to pull my foot away. His grip tightened and he stopped me. His lips soon replaced his fingers before he slid my shoe back on. He leaned over me and kissed my lips before standing up ad pulling me up with him. He grabbed a blazer out of the closet and a coat for me. I looked at him confused. Wolves ran hot so he never wore a jacket or anything.
"I need it for tonight," he said before leading me out into the hallway. Bree was dragging the coffee table to the side. Before I could step up and help, Embry ran over and stopped her.
"What are you doing?" he asked her.
"I have an air mattress in my bag."
"You don't need an air mattress. You can sleep in the bed," Embry told her. Bree looked at him and chuckled. She shook her head no and pulled a sheet out of her bag.
"Sleeping where you and her sleep? No thank you," Bree said flapping the sheet out. Embry grabbed the sheet and pulled it towards him. Bree pulled it back and Embry pulled it back. It was obvious that Bree felt strongly about this. I stepped up and put my hand over Embry's.
"Bree we really think you would be more comfortable in the bedroom. I can change the sheets if you want." She paused and shook her head no.
"It's ok. I'll do it myself. I'm sure you guys are running late. Good night, you two." Bree said. Embry passed her the sheet and grabbed my hand. Embry didn't look back as we walked out to the car. I did though. Bree stood there watching us. She looked sad. I wanted to go back inside but she quickly closed the door. Embry led me over to the car and opened the door for me. He quickly ran over to the other side and got in. He started the car and looked at the clock.
"Just so you know, I'm going to be pushing it," he said. I smiled and buckled up my seat belt. I didn't think Embry meant it when he said he was going to be pushing it. But he really did. I was surprised that we weren't pulled over on the highway. I had no idea where were going but when I saw him pass the exit for Port Angeles I knew we had to be going to Seattle. Embry managed to cut down 15 minutes on the drive to Seattle.
"So where are we going?" I asked him as he slowed down with the street traffic.
"Up."
"Up? What does that mean?"
Embry pulled over and opened his door. A young valet driver stepped up and took the keys from him. Another valet tried to run down and open my door but Embry stopped him. Slowly he walked over and opened my door. As I slid my hand into his, I couldn't help but smile. He bent his arm and I slid my arm into his. As we stepped onto the sidewalk, I looked up in amazement. The Seattle Space Needle stood in front of us. My smile got wider as we fell into the flow of the other people walking inside. I had no idea that this was what he planned for us. We stepped onto the elevator and Embry lead us over to the windows. As we moved up, I looked over at all the lights of the city.
We stepped off and headed over to the restaurant. Embry never moved my hand from his arm. He greeted the hostess. Her eyes lit up and she stood up straighter. The quick glance up and down let me know that she found him attractive. Embry smiled but never looked past her face.
"We have a reservation for Call."
She looked over at me and I raised my eyebrows. Yes you could look all you wanted but this was mine. She gave me a slight smile and looked down at her reservation list. She dragged her finger down and tapped the pad when she found his name.
"Oh yes, reservation for two. Welcome to date night in the sky," she said smiling and leading us into the dining room.
Embry had really outdone himself with this date. We started off with dinner in the Sky Needle. It gave us a full 360 view of the city as we ate. We laughed and talked over what I had to admit was a lovely dinner. Afterwards he drove us over to the theatre and really surprised me with some good seat to go see Wicked! I was a huge and I do mean huge musical fanatic. Our seats were dead center on the main floor. After the show we walked around for a little bit.
"Embry this night was amazing. Thank you so much."
"No problem Mila. I know I ask you for a lot. And I haven't been there for you like I should have. I just wanted you to know how much you mean to me. Did you really like it?"
"Like it? Embry I loved it. And you planned this all by yourself?"
"Well Emily suggested the restaurant. But I did everything else myself. You wouldn't believe what I had to go through to get the tickets."
I laughed and shook my head. I had a pretty good idea. This was all so different for Embry. I looked at him and wondered how long he would continue to amaze me. A breeze blew and I shuddered a little before Embry slipped his jacket off. He slid it across my shoulders and I pulled it tighter. He grabbed my hand and kissed the back of my hand before pulling me closer to him. We walked and talked for a bit. The night was perfect. We were back to us and it felt so good.
"So are you ready for the next part?"
"Next part? You mean there's more?" I asked him surprised. Embry stopped walking and wrapped his arms around my waist. His lips touched my neck and my breathing started to shudder. His lips trailed down my neck. I sucked in a deep breath when he kissed my bottom lip. He made his way back up to my ear and kissed it.
"Do you trust me?" he asked me quietly. I finally let my breath out but only because I was afraid I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen. "Of course I trust you," I said before he kissed my lips.
"I'm going to need you to follow me and close your eyes when I tell you too."
This was going to get interesting.
