Thirty-Seven Embry
It had been days. Ten days to be exact and I was no closer to finding them than I was before. I had run miles North and East but hadn't found them. Ten days they had been with some leech and I couldn't find them. I knew every day that went by I didn't see them, was a day closer to me losing them forever. I had literally been running for three days. I knew I needed to sleep but I didn't want to. I had just gotten back to La Push after going 200 miles deep in Canada.
"Embry you need to get some rest," Emily said to me. I turned around and looked at her. She had a picnic basket in her hands. As soon as I smelled the food, my stomach started to grumble. She was standing a few feet away from me. I went behind a tree and phased back to my human form. When I came out she was walking towards me.
"I bought you some food," she said as she sat on a tree that had fell. I sat next to her not saying anything. I didn't expect her to understand what I was going through. I knew she was trying to be nice and get me to eat. She was right; I hadn't eaten in two days. Even a wolf can't go that long. The first bite of the sandwich was like heaven. You know you never really realize how hungry or thirsty you are until you get that first sip.
"I take it you didn't find anything in Canada?" she asked me. I shook my head no and opened the bottle of water she had packed. Emily took a deep breath and looked around. "We're gonna find them you know. We've never lost somebody who was important to the pack." She said. She went into the basket and pulled out a small Tupperware container filled with blueberry muffins. As soon as the smell hit my nose, I wanted to cry.
Mila loved Emily's blueberry muffins. She should have been here with us eating them. Instead she was gone, gone with a leech, and I had no way to protect her. That was my job! Wolves were supposed to protect their imprints. Not only had I failed my imprint but I failed Bree. All this time I thought not telling her was going to protect her. Sam and the elders swore that it was going to be ok as long as Bree didn't know. She wasn't supposed to get caught up in all of this. She was an innocent and she was supposed to be an innocent. She was innocent. Both of them were gone and it was all my fault.
I never should have gone to Ava's that day. Had I just said no, like I wanted to everybody would be ok now. But then I wouldn't have met Mila. And I couldn't imagine my life without her. She was everything. Emily was the only one who didn't try to make me talk when she was around me. That made me feel good. I didn't want anybody to know that I was about to fall apart. I needed to look strong.
"Thanks for the food Emily."
"Anytime Embry. You know what finishes up my meals pretty good? A shower and a nice nap. You smell Embry. You smell really bad," she said smiling at me. I didn't want to take a shower, I didn't want to rest. I needed to keep looking. As if she knew what I was thinking Emily put her hand on my shoulder. "Embry, you have to take care of yourself. Come back to the house with me. Just take a shower and sleep for at least an hour. I promise you if anything changes I'll let you know. You have to take care of yourself. You need to be strong when you go get Mila."
I wanted to argue with her logic but I couldn't. Especially, when Jake walked up behind her. He looked me in the eye. Embry go to Sam's. Shower and sleep. Go right now. The pain in my chest was tight. I knew he was giving me an Alpha order. And everybody knows you do what the Alpha says. I stood up and walked straight to Sam's house. I didn't want to stop but I had to.
Bree was sitting on the couch, her back to me. "You don't have to be so shy Embry. Come over here and get your son." Her head went down as she started to play with the baby in her arms. Slowly I walked towards the couch. Bree was laughing while the baby she had in her hands was cooing. "Daddy is really scared EJ. He thinks he's going to break you. But I told him he can't. He can't do that can he?" Bree whispered to the baby. EJ cooed and reached a hand up to touch her face. Bree laughed again and looked up at me as I rounded the couch.
She smiled and moved over to make room. Slowly I sat down and stared at her. She leaned over and sat EJ in my arms. It was awkward at first. I didn't know what to do.
"Don't just sit there like a statue. Talk to him Embry," Mila said to me. I turned and looked at her in amazement. She smiled and moved my arms to the right place behind EJ's head.
"I told you everything would be alright Embry. You just needed to trust me." I shook my head yes at Mila. She smiled and looked at EJ. "He looks just like you Embry! Bree didn't have anything to do with this."
"I only carried him for nine months," Bree said. I turned and looked at her. She was smiling at me to. EJ started to cry and Bree leaned over. "Looks like somebody is hungry. We'll be back," she said taking EJ out of my arms. I didn't want to let him go but he started to cry even louder. Bree took him from me and started singing to calm him down. She started walking towards the back of the house.
"Go with them Embry," Mila told me.
"What? No I'm not leaving you again." EJ started to cry louder.
"Embry go. I'll be right here waiting like always. It's ok. Just go."
"Mila I can't leave you."
"Cause all I know is we said hello. And your eyes looked like coming home. All I know is a simple name, everything has changed."
"What are you talking about?" I stood in front of her confused. I just told her I wasn't going to leave her again and she's standing in front of me singing. What the hell is going on?
"All I know is you held the door. You'll be mine and I'll be yours. All I know since yesterday is everything has changed."
Wait a minuteā¦I know that song. That's Mila's song. That's our song!
My eyes popped open and I jumped up from the couch. My phone was ringing but I couldn't find it. Where was it? I moved the table and couch cushions off. Where the hell was my phone? My eyes quickly scanned the living room. I turned around and looked in the dining room. There it was, on the table. I ran over and snatched it up.
"Mila!"
My heart broke as I looked at the screen. It wasn't a call but it was a text message. I tapped on the screen. The message opened in front of my eyes. It was a picture of a house. I had no idea what it meant. There was nothing special about the house. I couldn't even see an address. The picture looked like it was taken of another picture. The house sat in the middle of the forest, surrounded by trees. I scrolled up looking for more. When I saw the caption, I almost lost it.
Wish you were here.
I growled and started to shake. Sabrina was playing with me now. I didn't care what Jake said, I wasn't staying here anymore. I was going to find Mila. I was going to kill whatever leeches stood in my way. I grabbed Sam's keys and walked outside. Jake and Sam were running from the woods. I already knew what they were going to say. I shook my head no as I headed towards the car.
"Look I already know what you're going to say and I'm not going to stay here. It's been days Jake. I can't just sit here and wait for them to come back. Even if Sabrina lets them go, she'll get them before they even step out the door. It's not just my imprint missing man. Bree is out there to. And Bree has my son! I can't sit around and wait anymore Jake. Sabrina sent this text. She's toying with me! She's toying with Mila. She-"
"Messed up Embry. Alice knows her plan now." Jake said cutting me off.
"What?" I asked confused.
"We just let from the treaty line. Alice knows the plan. She saw when Sabrina decided to go for it."
"Now all we have to do is get to them." Sam said.
"Does Alice know where they are?" I asked Jake.
"Not exactly but there have been reports of people missing in Utah and Wisconsin."
"How can Alice see the plan but not know the place?" I groaned out in frustration. Utah and Wisconsin were miles away from each other. I needed to be sure. I didn't have time to waste. If I made a mistake that could cost Leah and Bree there life.
"Look Embry you pick a place and we'll go to the other place."
"No Jake. I can't let you and Sam leave. You have imprints. If something happens to you guys I will never forgive myself."
"Embry you don't have to do this alone. We're brothers. That's what we do."
"Fine I'll take Brady, Leah, and Collin. Anybody with an imprint stays. Send Brady and Collin to Utah. Tell them to call if anything comes up. Leah and I will go to Wisconsin." Jake nodded and I ran towards the tree line. I phased and quickly headed towards the highway.
Leah where are you?
Right behind you Embry.
Thanks for this Leah.
No problem. But I'm confused. How come she can see now?
I don't know. I guess Sabrina made a decision.
That's what I'm afraid of. Leah said. I was afraid to but I wasn't going to tell her that. I had to keep a clear mind. I needed to make sure that I was well aware of what was going on when I finally found Mila. As we ran along the highway, I couldn't help but think about how we always wanted to leave La Push. It had been a thing with some of us, getting out of La Push. It didn't matter where we ended up, we just wanted to get away. But now as I was running it didn't miss me that I was finally leaving. I was leaving but unfortunately it was not a good situation.
We had been running for hours. I wasn't sure if we were even going in the right direction until the faint scent of leech hit my nose. As we followed the trail, the smell got even stronger. There were five different scents; which meant we had at least five leeches to deal with. Two scents got smaller which made me stop running. I turned to Leah.
I smell it too. She said. Her ears started to move as she looked to the side. Leah growled as a leech stepped from behind the trees. His eyes were a ruby red and his skin was pale. He slowly walked towards us. Leah lunged before I could even say anything to her. She grabbed onto his wrist and he let out a squeal. I ran over and jumped in the air. I was almost on top of them when I was pushed out the way by the second leech. We both hit the ground. I quickly rolled away from the leech and attempted to regain my bearings.
The leech snarled and I growled. When I looked into his eyes I couldn't believe it. I was so stuck on who I was looking at; I didn't see him lunge towards me. He grabbed onto my front legs and I felt one breaking. I had no idea what was going on. I wanted to stop, I wanted to phase out and ask him where Mila was but as he jumped back towards me I knew I couldn't. I moved to the left and quickly turned around. My mouth went around his neck. I started to squeeze and could hear the granite breaking.
"EMBRY!"
I dropped Caleb and turned around. Mila was calling me. I needed to get to her. I should have heard Caleb come behind me but I didn't. His arms wrapped around my throat and he started to squeeze. Leah let out a whine as the leech she was fighting grabbed her too. Caleb squeeze tighter and I tried not pass out.
"Don't kill them! We have to take them back," another leech said. She jumped from the trees and was the last thing I saw before I passed out. This wasn't good at all.
