Thirty Eight Mila

Bree had been in and out for conscious now for days. I didn't know how many exactly. And I didn't know if that was a bad or a good thing. Thankfully her neck had stopped bleeding and as far as I could tell, she hadn't gone into labor. She still wasn't eating. I had to force her to drink the little water we were being provided. I had read somewhere that dehydration could be the biggest killer when you're out in the wild. And in a sense we were out in the wild. We weren't at home. We had no idea what was going on. We didn't know if we would be alright. I had been trying to find a way out but there was none. Bree started to moan. It was the first sound she had really made. I ran over to her and kneeled down.

Bree slowly opened her eyes and looked around. She looked me in the eye and took a deep breath. "Mila what is going on?" she asked me. This was it. I had to tell her the truth; she was in the middle of this now. I sat Bree up against the wall and grabbed the sandwich we had just gotten. I broke off a piece and held it to her mouth. She shook her head no and turned away.

"Bree you need to eat something. Even if you aren't hungry you have to eat something for EJ."

"Mila tell me what the hell is going on! I know that you know. Don't lie to me. I can't take anymore lies and secrets. Tell…me…what…is…going…on."

"I'll tell you if you eat." Bree stared at me before taking the piece of sandwich out of my hand. I took a deep breath and sat next to her.

"Do you know about the legends?"

"Yes I know about the legends. But those are just stories."

"Bree the legends aren't just stories. It's the history of the tribe. It's real. It all really happened. It's still happening today."

"So you expect me to believe that we really have Spirit warriors and cold ones?" Bree started to laugh. I knew she wasn't going to take it well.

"Bree do you remember what happened when Sabrina took us in the basement?" Bree shook her head no. "Bree you were bit. Caleb bit you. Caleb is a cold one…Sabrina is a cold one. Her and Saul are all cold ones." Bree started to laugh and shake her head. She didn't believe me. I didn't know what else to say to her. I had to figure out a way to get her to understand.

"Bree listen this is all real. It's real and it's happening. And we need to get out of here."

"Get out of here?" Bree started to laugh "There is no way we are getting out of here Mila! Look around you! We have been here for days Mila. You say they are cold ones right? You say the legends are real? Well if you know like I know there is no getting away from them. They are faster than the speed of light, stronger than the strongest man, and they hunt for fun. We are prisoners and we are never getting out of here." Bree whispered to me. I shook my head no. She couldn't speak those words in existence. We had to keep believing. Embry wasn't going to leave us here. The pack wasn't going to leave us here. Bree wasn't an imprint but she was carrying Embry's baby. She was just as important to the pack as I was. I was about to tell her that when the door opened up.

Saul and one of the girls stormed in. They pulled us up and dragged us across the floor. Before we stepped out the door, Saul tossed the girl some rope. She wrapped it around our wrists. I didn't understand why. Even if we were able to get away, they could stop us with just one leap. What was the point of our wrists being tied?

"Where are you taking us?" I asked them. They didn't say anything; they just lead us out of the door. We were dragged behind the house and lead into the woods. I looked over and saw Bree stumbling. I had no idea where they were taking us.

"We need to hurry!" Saul told her. He reached down and threw me over his shoulders. The girl scooped Bree up and they took off running. You know it's hard to really enjoy moving at the speed of light almost when your hands are tied and the world is upside down. Saul stopped running and I could hear growling. He threw me down on the forest floor. I didn't see Bree or the other vamp who was holding her. The growling got louder and I heard wood cracking. I didn't know what was going on. I heard another whine and more wood breaking.

It was a wolf. I knew it. I didn't know who it was or where they were. I look around and saw nothing. Another growl came out. "Embry!" I yelled out. I didn't know if he was there but there had to be at least one wolf around. If they heard me then they could let Embry know we were ok. They could hear where we were and get to us. I opened my mouth to scream out again when Saul threw me down to the ground. I strained trying to hear another noise but there wasn't anything. I literally heard nothing and that wasn't a good sign. The words were always full of life. I didn't hear anything. There were no birds, no bugs, not even a deer. Well I didn't know if deer made noise but it was to quiet.

"Let's go," a voice said from behind me. I didn't hear her come up behind me. Sabrina's had gripped my arm and flung me over her shoulder again. This was getting really old.

"What are you doing? Where are you taking me? EMBRY! EMBRY! JAKE! ANYBODY! I'M OVER HERE!" I yelled. Sabrina said nothing as she made her way through the forest. We ended up in front of a small cabin. I had no idea why we were here. As soon as we stepped on the porch, the front door was opened.

"There were two. One got away," Saul said. My heart started to speed up. I was right, there was a wolf here. And the wolf got away. Sabrina turned and looked at me. She smiled before walking closer to me. "Where is the other one?" she asked Saul. Saul motioned his head towards the back of the house. Sabrina grabbed my arms and pulled me up. I tried to get away as she dragged me towards the back of the house. When we got outside, my heart sank. The wolf was on the ground, with chains around it. I couldn't see who it was. Sabrina threw me down on the porch. My hands were still tied so I couldn't break my fall. The wolf started to growl. I didn't know who the wolf was; I was still too far away. That made me happy but I was still sad that the wolf was caught. I turned around and saw Sabrina watching us. She stared as if she was waiting for something.

"What do you want me to do Sabrina?" I asked her.

"Get this one to change." She said forcefully. I turned and looked at the wolf then back to her. I didn't know who it was and I didn't know who it was. I turned back and looked at Sabrina.

"I don't know this wolf." I told her.

"Very well," she said. Saul snapped his fingers and Caleb walked around the house. I didn't see him when we first walked up. He had Bree's arm and was dragging her behind him. She tried to get away. The wolf started to whine. I looked back and forth between Caleb and Sabrina.

"Go ahead," Sabrina yelled at him. Caleb smiled and looked at Bree.

"Caleb, no!" I yelled at him "Don't do this. I know you are in there." Caleb took a step towards Bree. I held my hand up.

"Stop!" I turned and looked at the wolf again. I stood up and slowly walked over towards it. The wolf let out a whine when I got closer. I took in a deep breath as I looked at the wolf. "I'm not sure if you're hurt but you should really phase back. You don't want your bones to set back wrong, if you're hurt. You can always phase back later." The wolf whined and closed its eyes. I watched in amazement as it shook and started to phase out. Every time I saw it I was in utter amazement. I gasped and shook my head as the human form started to come in.

"No," I whispered. Embry looked at me. He took a step forward and I held my hand out. "STOP! I don't know who you are but don't come near me." Embry stopped walking and stood looking at me confused. He tried to take another step forward but I stepped back. Sabrina stepped off the porch and in between the two of us.

"What do you want leech?" Embry practically growled at her.

"I want kill you of course."

"Fine you have me let them go."

"And why would I do that? I can't kill you without them."

"We are immortal."

"Oh come off it!" Saul said stepping over towards them "This one already told us what we need to do to kill you. All we need to do is kill your mates!" Embry looked past them and at me. I thought it was a good idea at the time, I thought making up some kind of story would help. But now I wasn't so sure. Embry looked hurt. He looked afraid. And it was my fault. I didn't know what he was thinking. He looked back at Sabrina and started to laugh. He was laughing so hard.

"You listened to her?! She's an outsider! She knows nothing about our legends, nothing about our history. She doesn't even look like us! Do you really think she knows our secrets?"

"Don't try to fool me mutt! She smells like wolf! She hangs out with the wolves."

"Because we felt sorry for her! She had nobody else. She was alone. She has no idea what she is talking about. There is only one way to kill us."

"What?!" I yelled out. They never looked at me. Sabrina stepped closer to Embry.

"And what way is that?" she asked him.

"It's a potion. If we drink it, we die." He told her. I couldn't tell if he was lying or not.

"What do we need to make it mutt?"

"A few things but none of them are here. The plants only grow in Washington. We need to go back."

"We…no you tell Saul what he needs. He will get it."

"The potion is only potent for a few hours after you make it. You'll want to get them to drink it as soon you make it. And I can tell you know, you aren't going to get any of the wolves to come here. They aren't going to leave the reservation and you can't step on the reservation. All three of us need to go back. That's the only way you'll get close to the wolves."

Sabrina paused and looked back at me and Bree. She turned and looked at Embry. She stepped in front of him and slapped him. A cry wanted to escape but I held it in.

"If you are lying to me mutt I will kill everybody you care about, starting with these two."

"I told you she's not a ma-" he was cut off when Sabrina slapped him again. Saul yanked me close to him and pulled my neck to the side. He put his mouth closee to my neck and I heard him inhale.

"I can hear your heart. As soon as she spoke you calmed down. And when she stopped you from coming closer to her, your heart sped up. You were anxious. If I find out you are lying to me...about anything…I will let blood run through out of her slowly. And then I will rip the child that other one is carrying out." Or better yet just change. I heard about the immortal babies. Always wanted to see one for myself." Sabrina stood up and looked back at the house. "Vanessa" she yelled out. The vamp that always brought us food stepped on the porch.

"Tell your sister to put the shield back up. Your plan of letting them find us didnt work. You ahev until we cross into Washington to come up with a way that will get me all the wolves at once. And if either of you fail this time; I will kill the both of you. Saul grab the girls. We're going back to Washington."
