Forty Mila
We had been driving for hours. I had no idea where we were. I was still trying to figure out how we got here? I just wanted to go back…back when everything was going fine. Bree let out a moan and I quickly turned to her. "Bree are you alright?" I whispered to her. She gave me a small smile and a quick nod. I knew she was lying. Sabrina was driving and hadn't looked at us once. We needed to stop. I was about to ask her when I heard a phone ringing. She didn't bother looking at the screen when she answered it.
"What…and why do I care about that…we have a plan and we need to stick to it…I don't know I didn't ask…fine…follow me," she said before hanging the phone up. She took the next exit and I let out a sigh of relief when she turned into a rest stop parking lot. Sabrina turned around and looked at us.
"I don't have to tell you what will happen if you try anything. Let's go," she said stepping out of the car. I slid out first and Bree was right behind me. I started looking for something to tell me where we were but there was nothing. The sound a door slamming made me turn back to the parking lot. Saul had stepped out and grabbed Embry. His hands were still bound and he looked so…I don't know. He didn't really look like himself. He must have felt me looking at him because he quickly turned and looked at me. A smile spread on his face and I quickly turned and looked away.
I couldn't let Sabrina or any of them know that he was my mate. I had to keep this wall up as much as it was hurting me. Saul and Embry walked around the building and out into the woods. Bree and I went in the bathroom. We did our business and walked back outside. We had gotten back in the car. Sabrina and Vanessa were standing talking in front of us. I looked around the car and saw the phone she was using laying on the seat. I looked back at the window and saw the girls still talking.
I slowly leaned up and tried to get the phone when Saul yelled. Sabrina and Vanessa turned and I quickly pulled my arm back. "Watch them," Sabrina told Caleb before they disappeared in the same direction I saw Saul walk in. Caleb looked at us.
"Caleb," I whispered "I know you're in there. You have to help us…please," I begged him. Caleb turned around and looked at me. I stared in his eyes and didn't stop the tears that fell. He had never looked so beautiful even though he wasn't completely himself. I slowly moved up on the seat and reached out to touch him. He took in a breath even though he didn't need to. My hand landed on his cheek. It was so cold and his skin felt like stone. His eyes closed and he placed his hand on top of mine.
"I can't help you Mila. I can't even help myself."
"Caleb, look at me. You are not like them. There are others out there who don't live like Sabrina and her friends. If you help us get away I can take you to them. They will take you in and teach you how their way of life. I know they will."
"I don't want help Mila. I don't want to live like this. Alex is gone. You saw what I did to Bree. I couldn't stop myself," he said. I knew if he could have, he probably would have started crying.
"The Cullens they can teach you how to control it. But we need to figure out a way to get out of here."
"There is no way. Even if I was able to get you and Bree away Sabrina would catch you before you even made one step. And she would kill me. That doesn't sound like a bad plan actually," he said looking away from me.
"That is a terrible plan Caleb. I just need to let the rest of the pack know whats going on."
"The rest?"
"Yes there are more like Embry. I can't explain it now but if you live with the Cullens you'll learn all of that."
"Why didn't you tell me about this before? I never would have let you leave when you came to see me."
"It's a secret. Only the wolves and their imprints even know about vampires and the wolves," he opened his mouth and I put my hand over it "I promise I'll answer all your questions later. Right now we need to figure out a plan."
"What plan? He asked me. I grabbed the phone that I saw Sabrina using and dialed Emily and Sam's. I prayed silently for them to answer the phone.
"Hello," Dakota said.
"Dakota?! Is that you?" I said with a sigh of relief.
"Mila? Oh my God are you alright? Emily Mila is on the phone!" I heard her yell. There was suddenly some rumbling and Emily came on the phone. As usual she was happy and talking a mile a minute.
"Emily…EMILY! Stop talking. Where is Sam?"
"I'm sorry I'm just so happy to hear from you. Where is Embry? Are you guys on your way back?"
"Emily I need to talk to Sam or Jake. Somebody!"
"They aren't here. Everybody is out looking for you and Embry. Leah came and told us what happened."
"Emily listen to me. You have to find a way to tell them we are on our way back to La Push. I lied and told Sabrina if she killed their mates the wolves would die. Then Embry told Sabrina there is a potion she can make that will kill the wolves. Their bringing us back to get it."
"A potion? Mila what is going on?"
"Look Emily please just tell the guys where we're going. I'm gonna try and get them to go to the clearing. The one right by the treaty line. And tell Jake he needs the Cullens to agree to the pack crossing over. And tell the Cullens that when this is all done I need them to take Caleb."
"Caleb? Your friend Caleb? Why would they…oh my goodness. I'm sorry-"
Caleb turned and looked out the window. He quickly jumped out the car and ran back around the building.
"Emily just do what I said. I have to go," I said quickly hanging up and deleting the call. I put the phone back just as Caleb was coming back from around the building. Embry was walking back to the car slowly. I couldn't tell if he was hurt or now. But knowing Saul I was surprised he was able to walk. Caleb walked Embry over to the truck and I let out a sigh of relief. I was able to get in touch with Emily. I just hoped that she would be able to let the pack know. I knew she would but now I had to figure out how to get them to the treaty line. If I could talk to Embry then I could tell him where to tell them to go. Sabrina and Caleb climbed in the car. I was trying to figure out a way to do that when Bree let out a gasp.
"Something's wrong!" she said.
"What?" I said. I looked down and saw a small puddle starting to appear between her legs. I looked at the puddle and back to her face. She was starting to sweat. I looked back between her legs and looked in horror. Her jeans were slowly turning red. Sabrina was talking to Caleb but stopped and turned around to face us. Bree started screaming and Caleb took a deep breath. I didn't know what happened next but I heard glass breaking and Caleb hissing. I reached behind Bree and tried to open the door. I needed to get her out of the car.
All the leeches were at the car by now. Saul and Vanessa had taken Caleb somewhere. The one who never really spoke came over and looked at us.
"We need to get to a hospital now!" I yelled out. Bree screamed out again. The small puddle of blood was growing. She groaned and grabbed onto my arms. Her fingers digging in my arms.
"The baby is coming," she cried out.
"They need a hospital. Caleb can't make the drive with her like this," the other leech said. Sabrina shook her head no.
"We lose control in the hospital. We can't watch them." Sabrina said.
"The pregnant one is only concerned about the baby. She's gonna be doped up on pain meds."
Sabrina was worried we would say something. Even if we could no one would believe us. I turned and looked at her. "I won't say anything; we won't try to get away." I said to them.
"I know you won't because you aren't going," Sabrina said before yanking me out the car. Sabrina slammed the door and held me by my neck. She turned and looked towards the truck then back to
"Take her the hospital and stay with her. Go now!" Sabrina said. The shield nodded and quickly jumped in the driver seat. She didn't wait for Sabrina to change her mind before pulling away from the curb. She started dragging me towards the truck.
"Saul Vanessa let's go! We don't have much time." She yelled out for them. They came back out but without Caleb. Sabrina looked at them confused.
"He found a snack," Saul said climbing into the passenger seat. Vanessa lifted Embry off the ground and put him back in the car. Caleb came out a few minutes later. His mouth was covered in blood. He didn't say anything as he hopped in truck. Saul got in the front seat, Vanessa shoaved me in the truck next to Embry before walking over and sliding in behind Sabrina. It was the first time I had been this close to Embry in so long. His scent was the same. My heart was starting to pound and I needed to stop it. I slowly took a deep breath. And then another. It took a few minutes but eventually I got my breathing slowed down. I wanted to let him know everything was ok. We had a plan. I knew Emily was going to get the pack on board.
I tried to resist it but I couldn't take it anymore. I wasn't able to kiss him or talk to him but being this close I could touch him. I looked around and once I was sure no one was looking, I reached a finger out. As usual I could feel the heat through his clothes. And it had never felt so good. I wanted to lay on his shoulder, I wanted him to take my hand and tell me everything would be alright. But I couldn't. His shorts were up right above his knee. I put my fingertips on it and almost screamed out when I felt the jolt. It was still there. Tears came to my eyes but I held them back. We were going to get out of this.
My cheek was hot and I was starting to sweat. Slowly my eyes opened and I looked around. The sun had set long ago and we were still driving. I tried to lift my head but couldn't.
"No."
It was so low I would have missed it. My eyes went wide as I looked towards the front of the truck. I couldn't tell if Sabrina and Saul had heard him. They didn't turn around. Realizing we were safe I smiled and closed my eyes again. If it wasn't for my constant fear we were going to die, I would have really enjoyed this moment. It was almost like old times. Sabrina pulled the truck over to the side of the road and turned the truck off. I quickly picked my head up from his shoulder.
"Alright mutt what do we need?"
"Some rhododendron flowers, red elderberry, Western Hemlock bark, Pipers bellflower, pine nuts, huckleberries, water from the Sol Duc Falls, and blood."
"Blood?" Saul asked him.
"Yes blood," Embry said to them. Saul's eyes went on me. Embry saw this and quickly added one more part. "You need blood but it has to be a wolf's blood."
I sat confused as I watched him tell him this. It was hard to see if they were buying it or not. Their faces were void of emotion. Sabrina started the car up again and made a U-turn.
"What are you doing?" I asked her confused. Sabrina didn't say anything.
"She needs to go back to the national park for the berries," he whispered to me.
"The national park? I thought you could get all the ingredients from the clearing. You know the one by the river runs right through. The one, if you cross over the river you're practically in Forks?"
Embry looked at me confused for a minute. He had to understand what I was saying. I prayed he understood what I was saying. He looked in my eyes and I looked back at him. I kept thinking about my conversation with Emily. I wanted to scream it out but I knew I couldn't. Embry looked in my eyes.
We need to get to the treaty line! We need to go to the treaty line! Everybody is waiting for us!
I kept thinking in my head. I thought about it over and over. Embry's eyes opened and he looked at me before turning back and looking at Sabrina. I wanted to scream out to him. We needed to be as close to the treaty line as possible.
"The flowers and berries are in the forest but the water has to come from the downstream that passes through our land."
"We can't go on your land. You said that yourself." Vanessa told him.
"There is another way...another side that you can get it from. We know how to get there."
"We?" Sabrina asked. I could tell she was curious as to why he said we. I was to. Embry quickly started trying to cover up his slip up.
"She doesn't know how to make it but she's been to the forest before. I know where the river is. If you're gonna make it we need to split up and get the ingredients. You wanna strike hard you need to have the potion ready before you do."
"He has a point," Saul whispered to Sabrina. She slammed on the breaks suddenly and looked back at us.
"Saul, take her, Vanessa and I will take him. DO NOT LET HER GET AWAY! Once you got the stuff meet me at the spot," she turned and looked at Embry "If you are lying to me…I will kill her…as you watch then I will kill you."
Saul nodded at them then stepped out of the car. He ran up the road and a few minutes later he came back. Only this time he was in a car. I had no idea where he got it from but I shuddered to think about who was the person no longer driving the car. Saul came and grabbed me out the truck. I wanted to grab onto Embry but I know I needed to go along with this plan. No matter it was. Saul took a deep breath as he threw me into the car. He slammed the door and quickly pulled off. I couldn't help but look at the truck grow smaller in the rear view mirror. My heart was pounding and I really didn't know what Embry had planned but I was able to pick up on the small clue. I needed to go to the forest. If he got Sabrina and Vanessa on the res then the pack would know and they would rescue him. Now if I could only figure out all those damn plants and berries he named in the car. I guess Embry didn't think that far ahead.
As always guys I really hoped you liked this chapter! Please please please review! Nothing turns a crappy day around or picks it up like a review.
