Forty-One Mila
I couldn't tell if Saul was buying this. So far I had found two random flowers, weren't really sure if they were the right ones though. I walked over to a bush and saw some berries. I grabbed a handful and passed them back to Saul. He was carrying a small basket for us to put everything in.
"Are you almost done?" he asked me.
"Sure we just need the bark and the pine nuts. Hemlock trees grown over that way," I said pointing to the left of us. Saul turned and started walking that way. He seemed to forget that I was human. I was practically running to keep up with him. When we finally reached the trees I started peeling off pieces of the bark. I passed them to Saul and he put it in the basket.
"Alright now all we need is-" Saul stopped talking and turned to look behind him. I had no idea what he was looking at. I looked around him but saw nothing. I didn't know what was going on but it felt like something had him spooked. Saul turned around and grabbed my hand. "Let's go," he said. We had only been walking for about a few feet. "Mila? Mila is that you?" a soft voice called out to us. I turned around and almost burst into tears when I saw Alice.
She was standing behind me smiling. I tried to step up but Saul pulled me back. He started to hiss and tightened up his grip on my arm.
"You should let her go. This doesn't have to get ugly or anything."
Saul threw the basket down and flicked his free hand in Alice's direction. She flew backwards and Saul turned to run. Suddenly Muscle Head was standing in front of us. Saul flicked his wrist and he went flying away. Saul turned and took two steps but Bella appeared in front of us. He flicked his wrist at her but she didn't move. He looked at her confused. He flicked his wrist again but Bella stood in her spot. I stood watching confused by this whole thing. Saul was confused too. I saw him mouth what the hell.
He tried to turn around to run but it wasn't possible. Alice, Muscle Head, and some other vampire were all around us. Saul flicked his wrist in all directions but nobody moved. He threw the basket down and grabbed me close to him.
"I wouldn't do that if I was you. If you let her go you might be able to escape with your life." A new vampire said. Saul looked confused and I was confused. The vampire was staring straight in his eyes. "Yes I can read minds and my wife is a shield."
"Let Mila go and tell us where we can find Sabrina, what her plan is, and you can go," Alice told him. Saul looked around again and moved his arm up to my neck. Automatically my hands went up to his arm and I started to scratch at it. I knew this wouldn't do anything but that didn't stop me from trying. I could feel the air slowly slipping away. I took a short breath in trying to reserve my oxygen. My vision was starting to get blurry and it was slowly going dark. Suddenly the vampire who could read minds lunged towards us. Saul tried to get us away but the other vampires quickly turned in. I didn't know how but I was snatched away from Saul. I took in deep breaths of air.
Alice punched Saul in the stomach. When he doubled over the Muscle Head took an elbow and slammed it into his back. The first vampire I saw brought his knee up into Saul's face. Every time they contacted it sounded like thunder. Saul dropped to the ground but Bella quickly pulled him up. She had her hands on his neck and lifted his head up. The big vamp and the brown hair vamp grabbed his arms. Alice and the mind reader stood in front of him.
"He's singing the alphabet," the mind reader said.
"He's made the decision not to tell us," Alice said.
"Sure you don't want to change your mind?" Bella asked him. Saul let out a hiss and Bella shrugged her shoulders. Her mouth went into a sinister smile as she started to pull back. I watched in amazement as his neck started to crack. When they ripped his arms off I let out a scream. The mind reader turned and came over to me. He picked me up off the ground and started running through the forest. The wind was whipping at my face. I was surprised that he was able to move just as fast as the pack could. I felt like I had blinked and we were in a parking lot. He sat me down and put some space between us.
"Sorry about that. We have to be in pieces in order to be killed. I'm Edward by the way," he said to me.
"I'm Mila."
"You are a friend of Reneesmes's right?"
"Nessie? Yes she is very sweet," I said to him before turning and looking back in the forest. I had no idea where Embry was but I needed to get to him. I didn't even know if he was safe and with Saul dead there was no guarantee that Sabrina wouldn't kill him.
"We are trying to come up with a plan to get your mate away from them. Sorry it's not something I can turn off." Edward told me. Alice, Bella, and the other two came out of the forest. Bella was holding the basket.
"Jasper has an idea," Alice said smiling. Jasper, I learned was one of the other vampires that played a part in saving me. He was the smallest of the crew but he was just as beautiful as the others. Jasper stepped up. "Bella and Emmett take Mila back to Sabrina. They tell Sabrina that Saul was killed by one of the wolves for crossing over the treaty line. Bella will say she saw it and she's tired of the pack killing us. Emmett will convince Sabrina he can get the wolves to come to him so they can strike."
"How do you know Sabrina will fall for this?" I asked Emmett.
"Sabrina and I have a history. She'll listen to me."
"And if this doesn't work?" I asked him. They all looked at each other before Bella stepped up and put her hand on my shoulder.
"It's going to work. Trust me," she whispered to me. I had no choice at this point but to trust them. I just hoped and prayed that it was worked.
My heart was pounding. This had to work. I didn't know if it was going to. My mind was going through all of the different scenarios about how this could go wrong. There was no guarantee that it would. Emmett thought it would be more believable showing up with me tied up. So my arms were tied together and my ankles tied together. Emmett had me in his arms and was following behind Bella. Before I knew it we were standing in front of a small cabin. The door flew open and Vanessa stepped out on the porch.
"What are you doing here?" she said as she looked at us.
"Where is Sabrina?" Bella asked ignoring Vanessa completely. The door opened again and Sabrina stepped out onto the porch.
"What do we have here?" she asked. Bella stepped up and placed the basket on the step and stepped back. Emmett stepped up and dropped me on the ground. The air was knocked out of my chest and my head instantly started hurting.
"Caught this one trying to get away," he said "Figured you needed whatever your guard dog was carrying and wanted her back. So I brought her to you."
"Where is Saul?"
"The mutts killed him. He crossed the line and they just attacked him. It was horrible. He didn't deserve that. He didn't know the rules," Bella cut in. Sabrina and Vanessa looked at each other and then back to us. Sabrina stepped off the porch and kneeled down in front of me. I looked up at her and tried to hide the fear that was slowly building up. I was tied up, at her mercy and there was no way I knew what was going to happen. She slapped me hard across the face before standing up and looking at Vanessa.
"Take her and get the mutt the basket," she said to Vanessa before turning back to Emmett and Bella. Sabrina yanked me up by my arms and through me over her shoulder.
"WAIT!" Bella yelled out. Sabrina kept walking. "It's a lie! They lied to you! About how to kill the wolves. It's a lie," she said quickly. Sabrina stopped walking and turned around. I couldn't see them because my head was behind her.
"Whatever they told you…it's a set up." I heard Bella say.
"And how do you know that?" Sabrina asked.
"Because I know them. I've been here a lot longer than you Sabrina. I used to have the alpha eating out of my hand. He told me all the secrets and I guarantee you whatever the mutt you have told you is a lie."
"You mean there's no potion?" Vanessa asked.
"Potion?" Bella started laughing "They got you guys good. There is no potion to kill them."
"The mutt said it's the only way because they are immortal."
"Not true," Bella said "Kill them when they are a wolf and you kill them as a man."
"And why should I believe you? Why are you trying to help me now?"
"Because Sabrina," Emmett chimed in "We're tired of these mutts. They walk around acting like they are so much better. Always giving us rules and telling us what we can't do. They even limit where we can go, what we can eat! It's time for a new day around here and you are the only one who can give it to us. BUT you need us to do it."
Sabrina still hadn't moved. I couldn't tell if she was buying it or not. If she didn't then she would have been crazy. I believed them!
"You said they killed your mate. They took my mate too. I have waited years for this and you are the only one who can give it to me. Jake killed my mate when I choose him instead of Jake."
Sabrina didn't say anything but made sure to knock the wind out of me on her shoulders. Somehow she made my stomach crash on her shoulder. I was looking at the floor before finally being thrown through to the floor. I looked up and saw Embry standing at the stove. If I wasn't so worried I would have laughed at this. He looked so weird at the stove. Embry turned around from the stove and his eyes got big. Sabrina walked over and slapped him. Embry wasn't expecting it so he fell back into the stove. Sabrina grabbed his shirt and hit him again. He slid down in front of the stove and Sabrina kicked him. I screamed as he let out a loud groan. The pot he was stirring fell in his lap and he let screamed out.
"I told you not to lie to me! I gave you chance after chance and what did you do? You lied to me. You know what makes me different from you? I'm not a liar," Sabrina said to him. She turned around and quickly walked back towards me. She yanked me up by my hair and started dragging me away from him.
"NO!" Embry coughed out. He let out another groan as he slowly stood up from the ground. He was wobbling but kept trying to come back towards me. Sabrina walked right out the door still dragging me. I screamed begging her to let me go. Bella, Emmett, and Vanessa came running from around the house. Emmett looked scared and held his hands up in the air.
"WHOA…WHOA…WHOA," he yelled out "What's going on?" Emmett yelled at her. Embry came running down the steps be Vanessa stepped in his path. I could hear a growl coming from Embry as he tried to get out of her grip. I knew if he wouldn't have been hurt he would have been able to get away. He would have been able to get to me.
"Hold him!" Sabrina yelled at Vanessa. She stopped walking and turned around. She picked me up from the ground and yanked my head back.
"Sabrina stop you can't do this!" Emmett told her. I instantly had a flashback to the clearing. My heart was pounding just like last time. Emmett stepped closer but Sabrina started to hiss at him.
"I told him if he lied, he would watch me kill her."
"We need her," Bella said "Her mate will do whatever he has to in order to get her back."
"She's not a mate," Sabrina said.
"She is a mate. I know who her mate it," Bella said to her. I felt like all of the air had been sucked out of me. This wasn't the plan. How was this helping us? Sabrina was going to kill me and Embry. I couldn't believe I had made the mistake of trusting them.
"Why do I care who her mate is?" Sabrina asked. Bella stepped in front of me and grabbed Sabrina's hand.
"Her mate is the Alpha. Let her go and I'll tell you how we are going to get them."
