Forty Two Embry

You know that moment when you are questioning your life? When you question every decision that you ever made in life? That is what I was doing, had been doing for the past two hours. It had been two hours since my plan had gone straight to hell. I wasn't expecting Bella and Emmett to show up and screw it all up. I needed to get out of here and fast. Sabrina had locked me up in a shed behind the house. I didn't know where Mila was or how she was doing. And it was driving me crazy.

The door swung open and forced my attention away from my angst. Bella walked in holding a tray. There was a plate and a small bowl on it. As she stepped closer to me my arms started to shake. The growl escaped my throat before I could stop it. Although I wasn't sure that I wanted to stop it.

"You should eat something," Bella said loudly as she sat the tray down on the floor. I growled and kicked my leg out in front of me. The tray flipped over. Bella stepped back and looked at me. "That's the only thing you're going to get all day," she said loudly again.

"You think I want anything you give me to eat leech? I trusted you…Jake trusted you! How could you do this to us? We were there for you when no one else was! And now you turn on us?"

"There for me?" Bella said before laughing "Your pack thinks you are so much better than us. Telling us we can't feed on humans. And Jake walking around like he's the end all be all."

"Bella, why are you doing this? We left you alone, you made your choice and we didn't interfere. You told them that we killed your mate. Why are you lying on us? Why are you doing this?" I asked her. Before I knew it Bella was in front of me. She slapped me and I could feel blood pooling in my mouth. She bent down and yanked my face up.

"Your pack's days of running things are over. You…might…want…to…eat," she said slowly to me. She looked me dead in the eyes before turning and looking at the small tray that was turned over. When she stood up Vanessa came to the doorway. Bella turned around and looked at her.

"Bring the girl in and see if she can get him to agree to eat. We need him strong if they are going to buy this."

Vanessa turned around and walked out of my sight. When she came back she held Mila by the arm. Her hands were handcuffed in front of her. Vanessa threw her in the shed. Without her hands to break her fall, she went face first into the ground. I growled at Vanessa wishing I could get to her. Sabrina had ordered me chained. Bella walked over and yanked Mila up.

"Bella why?" Mila asked her. Her voice was shaky and I could tell she was trying not to cry.

"Like I told your friend here, the days of the pack running things are over. Get your friend to eat before I eat you." Bella pushed Mila towards me and headed out. Vanessa stood staring at us. Bella turned to her.

"Vanessa, go get Caleb. He's a newborn and we need his strength. I'll watch them." Vanessa looked at her then back at us. It didn't look like she wanted to leave. Bella stepped closer to her. "Or I can have Sabrina tell you to do it." Vanessa rolled her eyes before walking away. Bella looked at us again before walking out the shed. When the door slammed, it seemed to echo. As soon as it was shut Mila stepped closer to me. Her breathing was ragged. Slowly she reached her arms out. She kneeled down in front of me and reached out to my face. As soon as her fingertips touched my face, she exhaled and started to cry. I wanted to hug her and tell her it would be ok but the chains stopped that.

Mila stepped closer and ran her hands across my face. She leant over and kissed my cheek. Her lips were dry and cracked. She must have been dehydrated. I moved my lips to her forehead and kissed it.

"You need to drink something," I whispered to her. Mila let out a chuckle and looked in my eyes.

"Leave it to you to be chained up and worried about me," she turned around and looked around the shed. "There's no water in here."

"Well there was water on the tray Bella bought me," I jerked my head towards the over turned tray. Mila followed my gaze. She got up and walked to the tray.

"There's a little water left in this cup," she said. It took her a few minutes to pick the cup up with her hands being tied together. She walked over to me and held the cup to my lips. I tried to turn my head but Mila didn't let me.

"Drink something please," she begged me. I took a small sip. "Now you Mila."

Mila rolled her eyes and put the cup to her lips. Once the small amount of water was gone, she sat the cup down on the floor. She rested her head on my shoulder and took a deep breath. It felt so good and if we were home, I would have wrapped my arms around her.

"I miss my mate Embry. "

"I know you miss him Mila and I know he misses you to," I quickly said to her. I didn't know if they were listening. I didn't want to take any more chances. My first plan had gone so great.

"Your mate never stopped looking for you. As soon as he realized you were missing, he never stopped looking for you."

"I never gave up hope that my mate would be looking for me. I'm sorry that I left in the first place. If we had just stayed home none of this would have happened," Mila whispered to me. Her stomach started to growl. "You haven't eaten?" I asked her.

"Haven't had much of an appetite." She responded to me. There was a sandwich on my tray but I had kicked it over. If I had known Bella would bring her in, I would have given it to her. We sat with another not saying anything. If this was going to be the last time we were together, I wanted it to be perfect. I kissed Mila on the head and let out a deep breath.

"Your mate is sorry about all this Mila. He told me this like every day."

"Both of us can't be sorry for this Embry. I made the choice to leave and not tell my mate."

"We all made choices Mila. Choices that made you and your mate's journey a rather difficult one."

"I wonder how Bree is doing." As soon as she said it, I stiffened up. I wondered how she was doing too. I didn't get to see her before they pulled off. I didn't know if the leech that was with her would have been able to get her to the hospital safely. I hoped so; after all she was the one who vouched for us to pull over. I never got to know her name and couldn't tell if she was a good leech. If there even was a such things as good leeches. I thought Bella was a 'good' leech but she and Emmett had turned on us. I couldn't figure out why though. Why would they do that to us? Mila let out a sigh and I looked down at her.

"I love my mate Embry. More than I think he knows. I have to be in his arms again."

"Your mate loves you too Mila," I told her with a kiss to her head.

"You should get some sleep Embry. They never left me and Bree alone for long. I'll be here when you wake up."

"I know," I whispered to her before closing my eyes. I wished I could have gotten out of the chains and wrapped my arms around her. I didn't know if this would be the last time."

A scream snapped my eyes awake. Mila's head popped up from my shoulder. A growl shortly followed. Mila stared at the shed door. There was more growling. She turned and looked at me? "Is it the pack?" I opened my mouth to answer when we heard another scream. Mila jumped up and ran over to the shed door. She pulled at it but it wouldn't budge. She started kicking at the door, screaming that we were in the shed. I heard another growl and a howl. Collin and Sam. I tried to yank my arms from the chains but it was no use. Another howl sounded off.

"Mila get back!" I yelled at her. She turned around and took three steps to the left before the door came flying inside. I ducked to avoid being hit by it. Collin came in and quickly ran over to me. I held my arm as far away from the wall as I could. I was taking a chance letting him bite the chains but I had no choice. Just as he was about to snap Bella came running in the shed.

"What are you doing? You come all this way just to risk killing him," she screamed at him. She ran over to the tray and kicked it aside. Once she found what she was looking for she turned around and ran over to us. I noticed the sandwich was in her hand. She threw the bread off and pulled out a key.

"I told you that you needed to eat," she said as she released my arms. Collin had already left the shed. My wrists hurt but I had no time to think about that. I snatched the key from Bella and ran over to Mila. She hadn't got hit by the door but the fall to the concrete floor of the shed had knocked her out. I heard more screaming.

"We don't have much time. Apparently Vanessa wasn't quite as trusting as Sabrina. She didn't got get Caleb like I asked. She told Heidi."

"Hedi? Who is Hedi?" I asked her confused. Bella said the name like I already knew who that was.

"Hedi is a member of Volturi. She gets them food and was over here for her latest pick up," her fingers did air quotes as she said those last two words. "Hedi let Aro know."

As soon as she said it my eyes grew big. Volturi being here was not a good thing. The last time we had to deal with them, more of the tribe changed when they weren't really ready. Suddenly all the screaming and growling made sense.

"How many?"

"Ten maybe twenty. Apparently Aro isn't willing to be so forgiving this time around."

"We have to go now," I said to her. I scooped Mila up and ran out. When I stepped out I was shocked by what I was seeing. Everywhere I turned; there was a leech and one of my brothers fighting. The Cullen's were even in the middle. It was just like when we had fought with Jake for Bella back when she was being hunted. I needed to get Mila away from this and keep her safe but I also needed to stay and help my brothers.

"Bella I need you to get Mila out of here!" I told her.

"You go! They need me here. I don't know if Aro sent Chelsea with them."

I didn't ask her who Chelsea was but I knew if Bella was telling me to run, I had to. I pulled Mila closer to me and took off running. I had no idea where we were going I still wasn't a hundred percent sure where we were. I turned to the side and saw Collin and Sam running on the side of me. I was glad that they were there with me. We reached the clearing and the guys stopped running. I slowed down a little and laid Mila in the grass. She was breathing but still hadn't opened her eyes.

"Mila…Mila…wake up," I said to her. I was still looking at her when I heard Sam whining. I turned around just in time to see Sabrina came from behind a tree. Sam and Collin stood in front of us and growled, ready to strike at any moment. Two others leeches stepped out as well. I had no idea who they were. My arms started to shake and I knew I was going to phase soon. I stepped away from Mila. I didn't want to risk hurting her. The leech on the left lifted his arms slightly and I saw a hazy mist slowly coming out. I remembered him now. He was there the last time we had seen the Volturi. He was Jane's brother Alec.

"We need to get out of here," I said to Collin and Sam. I picked Mila back up and turned to run. The mist would take a few seconds to reach us. That was more than enough time to get away. "Let's go," I yelled at Sam and Collin. I thought they would follow but they didn't move at all. Sam's head turned sideways and Collin started to yip. Sam suddenly turned towards Collin and started to bear his teeth and growl.

"Sam…Sam…Collin," they didn't turn and look at me all. Instead they started to circle each other as if they were about to fight. Suddenly they stopped and turned and looked at me. With every slow step they took towards me, I started to panic. There was no way I could take Sam and Collin, not when I was still human.

"Come with us or Chelsea here will make you be their lunch."

I looked at Sam and he snapped at me. I didn't want to go but I needed to. I bent down to put Mila down when Sabrina said something else "She comes to." My heart started to pound. I had no idea where they were taking us but I knew that I couldn't take them. I had to keep Mila safe. I nodded and followed behind Sabrina again. I hoped this wouldn't be the last time.
