Forty Six Embry

"I don't understand Jake."

"I don't either Em but it's gonna be alright." Jake said to me. I wanted to believe him. He had never been wrong before. Well except when he though Bella was his imprint. But ever since he's been the Alpha; he's never been wrong. He's always known what he was talking about but I wasn't sure if I could believe him this time. It had been two weeks. Fourteen whole days since Mila was attacked. I still couldn't believe what she did. I knew she wanted to help us and it worked. As soon as the leeches smelled the blood they stopped focusing on us.

We were able to get the upper hand. Vanessa and Sabrina were destroyed. Alec and Jane were able to get away but not before losing a hand or two. Carlisle didn't want to take Mila to the hospital but once we got back to Forks, he found out that Mila's injuries were worse than he thought. Her arm was broken, some of her ribs had been crushed, and she had lost a lot of blood. She also had swelling on her brain and because of that Carlisle had put her into a medically induced coma. Thankfully Carlisle was able to get all the venom out. She hadn't woken up though. And I was going crazy. The coma was supposed to help but there had been three times when her heart rate dropped and spiked. I wasn't sure she was going to wake up. And it was killing me.

"Please wake up Mila," I whispered in her ear. She didn't move or make a sound. A nurse walked in and checked the machines. She also checked the tubes hooked up to Mila before turning and walking out the room. Things needed to get better. We were supposed to be having a break finally but nothing was going right. I put my head down next to Mila's arm and started to cry. No wolf had ever lost an imprint. Ever in the history. If I was the first one, no one would be able to help me. No one would be able to tell me they knew it would be ok. I think I would also be the first wolf to die because if Mila didn't make it, I would die.

"You should go home and get some sleep," Paul said walking into the room. I turned to the door and saw him being followed by Jake and Sam. They had all been taking turns coming to see me. I knew they wanted to help but there was nothing to do. I didn't bother telling him that he was out of his mind. There was no way I was going to leave Mila. I was all she had. I grabbed Mila's hand and kissed it. When I turned around, I finally noticed the guys faces. They all looked worried about something.

"What is it?" I asked them.

"Come outside with us. You look like you need some air," Paul said. They were hiding something from me. I didn't know what it was. I stood up and walked towards my friends.

"What is going on? Tell me Jake," I said to him. He looked at me then over towards Mila. He looked at Sam and Paul before looking back at me. He took a deep breath and put one hand on my shoulder.

"Jeff is here…but he's not alone. There's a woman with her. Her name is Lira. She's Mila's mother."

As soon as the words left his mouth, my stomach dropped. I turned around and looked at Mila sleeping.

"Are you sure it's her mother?" I asked turning back. I didn't know what this meant. Mila had never mentioned her mother to me. I knew they didn't have a relationship so why was she here now?

"Where is she?"

"She's right outside…with Jeff. They want to come in." Sam said.

"Fine," I said turning around and walking back to Mila. I heard them walk out and a few seconds later come back in. I turned around and saw Jeff slowly walking in. The woman who was in front of him could have easily been Mila's twin. She walked deeper into the room and I heard her gasp as she looked at Mila.

"Oh my God!" she said running over towards the bed. She kneeled down and grabbed Mila's hand. "Mila…my baby. Oh my God." She mumbled as she looked Mila up and down.

"How are you holding up?" Jeff asked walking over towards me. His hands were in his pocket and he had his head down. Hearing Jeff speak, Lira looked up and finally noticed me.

"I'm as good as I can be."

"I'm sorry who are you?" Lira asked.

"I'm Embry…a friend of Mila's," I said to her. She gave me half a smile and looked back at her daughter. Just as I was about to say something, a doctor came into the room. Carlisle was off shift for the next two days. This new doctor was one I hadn't met before. HE walked in, holding a clipboard.

"Hello, I'm Dr. March. I'm looking for the next of kin," he said finally looking up. Lira and I stepped up at the same time. She noticed me stepping up and quickly stepped in front of me.

"I'm her mother," she said holding her hand across her chest.

"I need to speak with you about the treatment options for your daughter."

"Yes I did. I came as soon as I could. Excuse me," she turned and faced me "Could you guys give me and Dr. March some privacy please?"

"What?" I asked in disbelief. I had been by Mila's side literally every day. And now her mom thought she could kick me out. I wasn't leaving her again. Every time I had walked away from her something happened. I shook my head no. "I'm not leaving her."

"Either you leave or I'll call security," Lira said to me. I could feel my breathing intensifying and my arms started to shake. Jake and Sam quickly moved in front of me.

"Embry give them a couple minutes. We can come back. You need some air. Emily is in the waiting room with EJ."

I took a deep breath and looked at Mila again. Her chest rose and dropped slowly. I knew Jake was right. I needed to get out of the room. I had been there every day and night. I kissed her on the forehead and begged her to wake up again before standing up straight. As I walked past, Lira stared me down. I didn't like her. I had no idea why. Mila literally hadn't talked about her since we had been together. But something about her rubbed me the wrong way. Sam, Jake, and Paul followed me out into the hallway. As soon as we stepped out, Lira shut the door.

"EJ is in the waiting room with Emily and everyone else," Paul said. We all turned and walked towards the waiting room. As soon as I stepped into the small room, I couldn't help but smile. All the imprints were there and the best sight of all. Emily was smiling while cuddling EJ. He and Bree had been released from the hospital two days after he had been born. I walked over to them and Emily looked up from him and smiled at me.

"I figured you and Bree needed a break. She's one tired mama and you are one tired wolf," she said jerking her head to the empty seat to her left. I sat down and turned to her. Slowly she eased EJ down into my arms. His eyes popped open as soon as I slid my arm behind his head. He gave me the same smile he always did before closing his eyes again. Bree swore he wasn't smiling at me, but I knew he was. He did every time he got into my arms.

"How is she?" Emily asked.

"Not much of a change," I replied. EJ started to squirm in my arms before opening his mouth and letting out a whine. Emily quickly went into the diaper bag she had and pulled a bottle out. She shook it up and passed it to me. EJ hungrily took the nipple in his mouth and proceeded to start drinking. Watching him eat made me realize I hadn't eaten in a few hours. My stomach started to growl. Emily went into the diaper bag again and pulled out two Tupperware containers.

"These are for you," she said. She pulled the top off and my mouth started to water when I saw she had made meat and potatoes. "Give him to me and you go warm this up," she said closing the top. I quickly passed EJ to Emily and kissed her cheek before taking the food from her. After running to the cafeteria I warmed my food up and practically inhaled it. I was at the garbage can when I heard a familiar voice from behind me. I turned around and saw Lira walking towards the exit. She was on her phone and her mouth was moving so fast, I couldn't read her lips.

Quickly I sat the Tupperware down and followed behind her. I knew Emily was going to kill me if it wasn't there when I got back. She was one of those who always made sure it was there and matched. Lira was moving fast. But I was able to keep up with her. She looked around before turning and walking left. I followed behind her. I was right, she was on the phone.

"The Dr. wanted to talk about options," she said before pausing "Apparently she's been like this for two weeks. He was going on and on about how the longer she stayed the harder the recovery would be but she would be able to recover," Lira stopped walking and pulled out a cigarette. She listened to whoever was on the phone and shook her head no. "I told him to pull the plug!"

My heart dropped when I heard her say those words. She was talking about killing my imprint.

"It's been two weeks. Besides the money her father was sending me stopped when he died. And the life insurance payout is running low. I know he had me listed as Mila's beneficiary and there is no one here to fight me on this. Besides, the Dr. practically called her a vegetable. This is for the best," Lira said. She took a long drag from her cigarette and laughed about something. My body was shaking and I knew I was going to phase. Before I did something I would regret I turned and ran back towards the hospital. When I got back in the waiting room, Jake stood up and walked over to me.

"Lira…Lira wants to pull the plug Jake. She said she told the Dr. to stop trying to save Mila. She wants to kill my imprint," I said to him. My breathing increased and I looked around. "She wants to kill Mila. And I can't stop her Jake. She's Mila's mother and I'm just…she wants to pull the plug," I said before breaking down. Jake wrapped his arms around me and soon I felt more arms around me. My pack was there and they wanted to make it better. But the only person who could make it better was still asleep. I quickly shrugged them off and walked into Mila's room. I took my normal seat next to her and grabbed her hand.

"Mila I know you can hear me. You have to wake up now. It's been to long ok. You have to wake up. I need you Mila," I said. My voice started to crack as tears slowly rolled down my face. "You have to wake up now Mila. Please wake up for me. I can't lose you ok? If you die…I die. I love you Mila. Just wake up ok? Please," I said before putting my head down on the bed next to her. The tears were falling faster and for the first time I didn't try to stop them.
