Forty Nine Mila

I looked out the small window in my room. It was over the parking lot. I could see the guys all standing around by their cars. Seth shook his head no before Jake ran his hand down his face. He turned and looked up at the window, almost as if he could feel me looking down at him. I quickly turned and walked back over to the bed. It had been two days and nobody had heard from Embry. I knew he was upset but I didn't expect him to leave.

"Are you all set?" Lira asked me. I looked up from my suitcase to her. She stood in the doorway, papers in her hand, and a smile on her face. I nodded and quickly zipped up the small suitcase I had. I had finally been given the all clear to be discharged. Lira was so happy that I had decided to come back with her. Lira grabbed the suitcase and helped me into the wheelchair the hospital insisted that I get in.

When we got outside, Lira quickly turned towards her car. I reached up and touched her hand.

"Wait a second," I said as she stopped pushing me. I slowly got out the chair and made my way over to the guys. By now it was just Jake and Brady. They saw me walking towards them and thankfully met me halfway.

"Hey guys," I said with a smile.

"Mila, you can't leave us." Brady said to me.

"I don't want to but I don't have a choice. Have you guys talked to Embry?" I asked quietly. They both shook their head no. I didn't bother to hide my disappointment or stop the tears that glassed my eyes over. Before one fell I shook my head.

"Well can you give him this for me please?" I asked before slipping the ring off my finger. I thought about giving the bracelet back but I couldn't let every part of him go. Jake cleared his throat and looked down at the ring.

"Look Mila, you just said you didn't want to go. Stay with me or over at Emily's. We have the room."

"Thanks Jake but I have to. I only have a few months before I turn 18. Once that happens, maybe I'll come back and see you guys."

"Mila, sweetie we have to go!" Lira yelled from behind me. I turned around and held up one finger to her before turning back and looking at Jake. I held the ring out for him again. He let out a sigh before stepping up and taking it from me. His arms were around me before I could blink. The tears I had been holding back came falling down. Brady walked over and wrapped his arms around me. I would have stayed there forever but Lira called my name again.

I pulled away from them and wiped my face. "I love you guys." Lira called for me again and I quickly turned and went over to her. I had barely shut the door when she backed out of the parking spot.

"My husband was able to get us standby tickets. We'll be home before you know it."

I turned to look at Lira. She was smiling but as soon as she saw my face, the smile fell. "What's wrong?"

"I thought we would wait a few days before flying out. Where is home anyway?"

"Arizona."

"Arizona?!" I asked her surprised. The last time I saw Lira she was living in Michigan.

"Yes Arizona. I got a new job that I was going to start the day after I got the call. Luckily, they were able to hold my position. That's why I need to leave today. They can't keep holding it."

"What about my clothes and my things?"

"You don't need those things Mila. We can get clothes when we land. I really have to get back," she said to me. My heart started to pound in my chest. Something was wrong and I had no idea what it was. I looked at my phone. I tapped the screen, making it light up, my heart dropped when I saw I didn't have a signal. I looked out the window just as Lira eased the car in the traffic on the freeway.

"Wait we're going to the airport now?"

"Yes we have standby tickets. We have to be there. Don't tell me you're afraid of flying."

"No not at all. I just thought I would be able to say goodbye to some people before we left you know. I didn't get to see everyone at the hospital"

"You can always call them."

"Can I use your phone?"

"Sure," she said fishing it out her purse "Actually I don't have a signal." She said before sliding the phone back in her purse. That was really weird. We were on the highway and had no signal. I had driven this same highway so many times since I had been living in La Push. I looked out the window and tried to shake the feeling that I had just made the biggest mistake of my life. And seeing how I cut my arm open in front blood thirsty vampires, that was saying a lot.
