"…an eternity with you doesn't seem long enough, but it's a good place to start. I'll love you with every fibre of my being, for the rest of my days…Sherlock Holmes"
John sighed, glancing up at Mary who was sitting by him, deep in her thoughts. 'Well…' she considered, slightly overwhelmed that she was only just made aware of the not so platonic relationship John and Sherlock previously shared.
'…do you love him?' she asked.
She sounded nonchalant, but inside, her head was screaming at her not to ask the things she didn't want to know the answer to.
John lay back, suddenly incredibly tired.
'of course I do.' He said wearily, quickly checking that Mary wasn't too obviously surprised or upset.
She wasn't
She nodded calmly, sighing at what she knew was now inevitable. 'I love you, too' he mumbled, reaching for her hand.
'I know you do John. But are you really going to let him go?' John looked up, his mind reeling.
'If you ask me to'
'What?' Mary snapped, looking towards her partner.
'If you ask me to, I will… I'll stay.'
'No' she replied 'I won't ask you for anything apart from this...
Who is your soul mate?'
John blinked, never having needed to even consider this before. Sherlock. It was always Sherlock.
'I…don't know'
She laughed, shaking her head. 'I think you do. Are you really going to let him walk out of your life?'
John was overwhelmed. 'No?' he said, his eyes brimming with tears, knowing that now, this chapter of his life was finally over. This relationship that would have been so successful in another life.
But still. Not this one.
'No' she said decisively.
Mary stood up, straightening her dress, and holding back a sob which threatened to erupt from between her pink lips. 'Go get him, sweetie. And don't fuck it up, yeah? I expect an invite' she winked.
John leaned forward, grabbing her wrist as she turned to leave. She swivelled round, surprised.
'Thank you' he whispered.
'But an invite?...to what?!'
And it dawned on him exactly what he had to do to prove to Sherlock that they did belong together, after all.
He was going to propose.
