Christian's POV
I smiled at myself. She made the mature thing on calling me. Ana was still waiting for us at home. I only had to pick her up. At least she wasn't going to be stubborn. She admitted that she needed help, and I was glad to pick her up whenever she fell.
Taylor was on the road, but there was so damn commotion. Ambulances, police cars, BMW's that I recognised as the FBI's… What the hell happened that brought all this?
Sirens were making my ears bleed. Taylor closed the windows. It was driving him insane as well.
'What the hell happened?' I asked.
'I guess some accident…' Taylor replied. 'It's that time of the year where teens play hard and party hard…'
'You seem to know in this business…' I chuckled.
'Don't act as if you don't know about these Christian. We were one of them back in the days…' Taylor chuckled.
'Time flew Jason…'
'It did… and we're not getting any younger…' He chuckled again as he stopped to a halt, at the Chinese restaurant. 'What the heck?' He said again as I exited the car. There were too many cars… ambulances… I was bewildered by everything. My daughter was to be waiting for me here, and instead there is a land rover blocking everything. One of the detectives came forward as I tried trespassing.
'Sir… you cannot go there…' He started.
'My daughter is to be waiting for me here… she was parked here…' I explained as I kept looking ahead trying to spot her.
'Your daughter?' He asked astonished almost in surprise.
'Yes my daughter… Sera Grey…' I made myself clearer, as Taylor moved forward and I could see him pass his fingers through his hair. The detective made a signal to the one above him, and he came to talk to me.
'Mr. Grey…' He started after the other detective filled him in with everything.
'Christian… you… um… have to see this…' Taylor came forward.
'Wait… sir, would you mind telling us what car your daughter was in?'
'An Audi…' I quickly replied as I saw fear creeping through his face.
'Sir… your daughter has been in an accident… they're taking her to the hospital now…'
'What?' I asked as I saw three people being wheeled out.
'A drunk driver lost control of his car… and…'
'Oh God…' I replied as I moved forward escaping anyone who tried to stop me. I moved in front of the rover, and there it was… what seemed to be my daughter's car, was now crashed to the pole on the pavement. I moved forward and realised that the windscreen was shattered into million pieces. 'No… no… this can't be happening…' I kept repeating as I ran my hands through my hair. Taylor came forward and tried calming me down. I searched for one of the ambulances, and finally I pinpointed my daughter. I ran to her with a detective and Taylor on my tail.
'Sir… you have to move back…' The paramedic ordered, while the detective took over.
'He's her father…' He replied.
'Oh God…' I kept repeating, as I reached for her hand. She was unconscious, and they had already intubated her. There was blood all over her clothes. 'Sera… Sera please wake up…' I begged.
'Sir… we need to get going…' The paramedic said again as they climbed the ambulance. 'In or out?'
I quickly climbed in and realized that I had to tell Ana. 'Jason call Ana…' I called to him as the doors closed.
'Sir, is she allergic to something?' The paramedic asked.
'No… I don't know… please help her… why isn't she waking up?' I panicked as he hooked her up to some more wires.
'Sir, I need you to stay calm…' the paramedic replied again. 'Is there anything we should know? Is she on any medications…'
'We were giving her Atarax, but we stopped them few weeks ago… she was taking Nyquil… she had a cold…' I quickly replied still holding her hand into mine.
'She's running a fever… Things are complicating themselves…' He replied as he brought out ice packs. 'Place this on her sides…' He ordered as he started cooling my daughter down. I was shaking. I couldn't comprehend what was happening. She was responsible enough not to drive… and yet she still got into an accident.
'How did you find her?' I finally asked. I was glad I didn't see the picture… I wouldn't have been able to take it.
'She flew from the windscreen sir…' He replied, as her stats started going down. Her body stiffed in a second, and it started shaking violently. 'Dammit…' The paramedic said again as he placed her in a recovery position.
'What's happening? Why is she shaking?' I panicked.
'There is pressure building in her brain…' He said again as he brought out an injection. 'I'm giving her some Valium…' He notified me.
'What do you mean by pressure?' I asked again.
'Brain haemorrhage…' He replied as he injected the whole bottle. 'We need to get her to the hospital as fast as we could. We need to relieve the pressure…'
'What happens if we don't catch it in time?'
'She can risk brain damage or even death…'
Taylor's POV
I decided to tell Gail first. It was better if Gail broke the news to Ana. I didn't want to kill her. I called Gail, and after a couple of rings, she picked up.
'Jason?' She asked.
'Yeah… listen, is Ana there?'
'No… why? Do you need her?' She asked again.
'No… no… listen… I don't know how to break this… but… Sera was in an accident…' I blurted out.
'What?'
'A drunk driver crashed into Sera. She flew right through the windscreen… Christian is with her to the hospital. It doesn't look good Gail…'
'What do you mean?'
'The paramedic…' I started, but I chocked. 'Look… tell Ana… and Sawyer… don't leave her alone and come to the hospital…'
'Taylor what do you mean by 'not good'?' She insisted.
'You better come to the hospital. I'm on my way right now…' I quickly hung up before she asked something else.
Gail's POV
Taylor left me dumbstruck. What was I supposed to tell Ana? How was I to tell her? I went straight to Sera's room and packed her some clothes. I had to get everything ready before I broke the news to Ana… I just don't understand how drivers could be so irresponsible. They practically stole the life of this family… they… oh God… I don't even want to think about it… Jason said it doesn't look good… She can't die… she fought through everything…
'Gail?' Ana asked from behind me, as I folded some more clothes into a bag.
'Oh… hi Ana…' I replied. 'Is everything ok?'
'Christian is still not home… it's been almost an hour… I've tried calling him, and he still didn't pick up… I'm getting worried…' She said again as she checked the time. 'What are you doing Gail?' She asked again as she realised I was packing. 'Are you ok? You look like you've seen a ghost…'
'Um…' I started. I had to tell her. I couldn't keep this from her. She is her mother after all. 'Ana, I think you should sit down…' I started.
'Why? What's wrong?' She asked scared.
'Ana… please…' I insisted as she sat on the edge of the bed.
'What is it Gail?'
'Um… Taylor called…' I started.
'…and…'
'Ana… Sera was in an accident…' I finally blurted out.
'What? You're joking… Christian went to pick her up…'
'Ana… a drunk driver crashed into her…' I explained as she paled.
'No… it can't be…' She said again.
'They're taking her to the hospital now…'
'No… no…' She said again as she tried calling Christian again. 'It can't be…' She said again as Sawyer came in.
'Taylor is at the hospital… we should get going…' He notified us.
'Oh God…' Ana said again as tears flowed down her face.
'Ana… you have to be strong…' I tried again.
'Um… let's… let's go…' She said lost. She barely knew what she was doing. I could understand her. I felt the same way, but this was her daughter.
Christian's POV
'I want my mother and my father to work on my daughter…' I blurted to the paramedic.
'What?'
'I want Grace Trevelyan Grey and Carrick Grey to work on my daughter…' I repeated as we finally arrived to the hospital. She was still unconscious, and nothing looked good. As we entered the hospital, the paramedic was compassionate enough to ask for my parents. Both of them were astounded as they saw the scene in front of them. The two other guys followed my daughter, and other doctors aided to them.
'What do we have?' My mother started as composed herself. She took the chart from the paramedic, and started overviewing everything, but soon she had to stop, as she went into what seemed her second seizure in minutes.
'This is the second one Dr. Grey…' The paramedic said again as they rushed her into the emergency room.
'Christian… you have to stay out…' Dad ordered.
'Dad… I need to be with her…'
'Christian there is nothing you can do… you need to let us work…' He replied again.
'Carrick, we need to go straight to the OR, she's bleeding from her ears and nose…' My mother said again.
'Christian… out… We'll send someone to tell you about her condition…' He said professionally.
'Dad… she's sick…'
'What do you mean?' He said again.
'She was running a 103 fever in the ambulance…' The paramedic replied as he cut her clothes off and handed me the jewellery she was wearing, while my father brought me some papers.
'Christian, we need to go to the OR and relieve the pressure for her brain. You need to sign this ASAP…'
'Dad…'
'Christian, not doing surgery is worse than leaving her like this. I need you to sign this… Every minute is precious…' He said again as I quickly signed everything as they rushed her away from me.
Taylor brought me some coffee, while I was in the waiting room. I couldn't get the image of my daughter laying lifeless… I was afraid she was going to die… She looked bad… she was bad… even my parents' look didn't convince me. The paramedic said that things don't look good…. What am I going to do?
'Taylor… I need you to run a full investigation on what happened tonight…' I started.
'Christian…'
'I want the asshole that hurt my daughter ruined and behind bars… I don't care if they're just teens…' I looked him straight into his eyes. 'I'll kill him myself.'
'Christian… The driver's parents are here…' He notified me.
'I hope he dies…'
'Christian you don't mean it…'
'Have you seen my daughter Taylor? She had two seizures in few minutes… she flew through the windscreen…' I replied. 'I shouldn't have let her drive in the first place…'
'Christian she could have been with you and you both could have been in an accident… Hell, she could have been with me, or worse, she could have been walking on the pavement.'
'If I was with her, I would have put my life in front of hers…' I replied as Ana, Gail and Sawyer entered the waiting room.
'Christian… what happened? Where's our daughter?'
'She's in the OR… I'm waiting for some news…' I replied as I hugged her.
'Christian…'
'Please… don't ask anything Anastasia… I don't want to discuss this…' I replied as we sat down, waiting for an update.
Grace's POV
'How's her temperature?'
'98…' Ross replied.
'Good…' I replied. 'Driller please?' I said again as Carrick handed me the drill, when the door of the OR opened in an instant.
'Dr Grey, this is a teaching hospital. You ought to let the intern into this surgery and most of all letting Charles perform the surgery.'
'Chief, with all due respect, that girl on the table is my granddaughter, and nobody inexperienced is touching her…' Carrick replied. '…and the minutes we're wasting discussing this, is a more risk of a brain damage for her…'
'Carrick…' The Chief started again, as the monitors started lighting up as a Christmas tree. 'What the heck?' He said again.
'She's in V-tech…' I said again as I dropped the driller and the chief moved forward helping us.
'Charles OUT NOW…' He ordered. 'You're right… this is no job for an intern… Tell me… what can I do?'
'You scrubbed?' Carrick asked as he started CPR.
'All ready…' He replied as he took her chart and kept viewing the monitors with us. 'We need to relieve the pressure now…' He said again. 'Grace?'
'You do it…' I replied as I moved over. 'You're the neurosurgeon…' I said again as I helped Carrick. I was too emotional to drill a hole in my granddaughter's head.
Robert took the driller in his hands, and with little effort he drilled the hole. Blood was gushing out at an alarming rate. This could be a risk for the brain itself to swell, which could cause permanent damage. I was afraid of the outcome of this situation. All of us were.
'Grace… suction…' He ordered as he drilled a little bit bigger hole. As the blood was being sucked out, her heart rhythm started to get back to normal. The blood flow was decreasing, but there still was the risk of her dying on the table right this minute. Her heart had taken a lot throughout this year. I didn't know how much her body could take. 'Packing tissue…' He asked again as I helped him out while Carrick kept his eyes on the monitors. 'Yes… that's it… Blood flow decreasing… oxygen consumption increasing… heart rhythm evening out…'
'The question left is… what are the repercussions?' Carrick reasoned.
'We'll keep her in an induced coma for now, till the swelling decreases. It's better like this…' He suggested as he injected the needed medications. 'I want her pumped with antibiotics… and I want an update on her condition every hour…' He ordered to the nurses.
'We have one problem…' Carrick replied.
'What are we going to say to her parents?'
'I'll talk to them…' Robert offered. 'You can take a few days off… You need to stay with your family during these times…' He said again as we moved back to the scrubbing room.
'What's your verdict Rob?' Carrick asked.
'Carrick, Grace, you're both qualified in this sector… but she is family… and it's hard for you to accept the truth… but you know as much as I know…'
'She may not make it… is she?' I asked already feeling my heart breaking.
'No… we need a miracle… She can have some permanent impairment… her brain was left without oxygen for over 3 minutes… her stats were low… her heart is weak… her liver… it's still regenerating… the morphine isn't helping… in my opinion we're being kind inducing the coma…' He admitted.
Christian's POV
I couldn't forget the chief's words. They kept echoing deep into my brain. How could this happen? He said she would need a lifetime of physiotherapy and rehabilitation. She may lose her vision… or her mobility… or die… both Ana and I… we couldn't bear the thought of losing her. We stayed with her day and night. I didn't want to leave her alone. We left her side for few minutes till we went home to shower, change and get back to the hospital.
My parents said that the swelling had subsided, which is why they stopped inducing the coma. We were only waiting for her to wake up. I kept pacing to and fro. I was hoping she would be all right… that nothing they said was right… I was hoping for a miracle. This was my only child… the one that loved me no matter what… the one that fought for my life… and I couldn't protect her from anything.
Carter didn't leave her side any minute. He stayed with us day and night, and this moment was none the less. He was waiting for the time she woke up… we all were…
'Grace, when is she going to wake up?' Ana asked as she held her hand.
'Soon… minutes now…' My mother replied as we noticed that her eyes were almost opening. 'Don't crowd her, she's going to be a little groggy, so let's just give her some space…' She advised us as finally she opened her eyes.
'Hey… it's so good to see you.' My father started as she kept looking at us with a blank face.
'Sera, it's ok, you're in the hospital, you were in a car accident, you hit your head but you're ok, we just kept you asleep for a little while…' My mother explained as she kept staring at us.
'Who's… who's Sera?' She asked as we all stared at each other, not knowing what to say as she whimpered.
'How do you feel?' My father tried again.
'My head hurts…'
'That's perfectly normal…' He said again, as he increased the morphine. 'It will help you...'
'Sera…' Ana started.
'Who's Sera?'
'It's you…' I replied.
'Sera, do you know who I am?' My mother asked again.
'A doctor?' She replied confused. 'An accident?'
'You were in an accident…'
'Was anyone else hurt doctor?'
'Mum?' I asked her while she stopped me.
'Sera… do you know who the woman holding your hand is?' She asked her again.
'Um…' She replied.
'Sera… do you know who I am?' I asked her broken.
'I…'
'Christian easy…' My father tried as I felt my whole world shatter, while Ana started crying. She couldn't remember any of us. She didn't remember who she is. I moved forward again and looked her straight into her eyes.
'Sera… I'm your father… and she is your mother…' I replied as I saw fear creeping across her face. 'Don't you remember?'
'I… I…' she stuttered.
'Sera… do you remember who I am?' Carter tried again.
'Um… my brother?' She asked.
'No… I'm your boyfriend… Don't you remember me?' He asked panicky.
'I…'
'Sera… you need to rest…' My mother took over. I realised we were all panicking her. I exited her room not knowing what to do. She didn't remember any of us. She didn't know who she was… who anyone was. My mother followed me outside.
'Christian…' She tried.
'You said things were very good… you said she may be immobile… you never mentioned that she would forget everything… she has no fucking memory mum!'
'Christian, a brain injury isn't like a broken bone or laceration. The brain is much more unpredictable. Sometimes due to the way the swelling tissue compresses against the skull, it can cause some impairment.' She explained.
'Some impairment? She doesn't remember us mother! She doesn't fucking remember who she is!'
'Even though she's awake, the swelling can cause confusion or memory loss, erratic mood swings…'
'What?'
'Christian, we need to give her some time…'
'Mum she doesn't know anything!'
'This maybe temporary amnesia…'
'…and what if it's permanent? What are we going to do mother?'
'I don't know…' She admitted.
'Great… that's just fucking great!' I replied as Ana came out crying. I moved to her and she hugged me tight.
'Christian… she doesn't remember anything or anyone… she knows nothing…' She cried.
'What did she say?'
'I asked her simple questions… her age… where she lives… she knows nothing Christian… nada… zilch…' she cried. 'What are we going to do?'
