Christian's POV
It's been already two more days since she woke up. We remained with her talking… trying to bring back some memories… but there was nothing left in her. She barely knew what she liked… who she was. She didn't recognise neither Gail nor Taylor, neither my parents. I didn't know what I was supposed to do. If I pushed her, it could back fire… but her brain wasn't co-operating.
Elliott came with Kate to visit, maybe she'll recognise them, but she didn't. Not even my non-stop talking sister. Who could forget Mia? But she did… she remembered no one. We only had to take one last chance. She was close to John… maybe she'll remember him.
As he arrived, he gave me a signal to talk to Ana and I outside. I didn't know what to do. Especially that soon we had to take her home. She probably wasn't going to trust us, but we had to get her back to her old routine maybe that will bring the memories back.
'Christian… I just heard…' He started. 'How is she?'
'She doesn't know us John… She remembers no one… not even herself…' Ana replied as she looked at her from the window. 'She's here, but there is a part of her missing…'
'The worst you can do right now is let her see you like this. Take some time to compose yourselves… I'll try to talk to her…'
'Good luck with that! When Elliott and Mia hugged her and went over her, she freaked out…' I replied.
John's POV
Ana and Christian seemed lost. She was alive… but with no memories. I could only imagine what they were feeling. I tried keeping them in perspective, but it wasn't easy. I looked towards the window and saw her reading her own chart, with another notebook in her hand. One thing remained the same whether she remembered or not. Her studious nature was still there. I entered her room gently and she kept staring at me.
'Hey munchkin…' I smiled as I moved forward while she kept staring at me. I realised that she didn't recognise me.
'Um… hi…' She finally replied as I sat on the edge of the bed. 'I'm sorry for being rude… but do I know you?' she asked gently.
'Yes…' I replied.
'Are we family or a doctor?'
'Both…' I chuckled.
'Ok… so you're family…' She replied as she rummaged through the pages in front of her. 'You're not uncle Elliot… you're not a grandpa… you're not Taylor nor Sawyer…' She continued as she grabbed one of the photos and looked at the faces. 'Well… you're in this picture…'
'I'm…' I started before she cut me off.
'Don't tell me… I know you… I have to remember…' She kept saying. 'Don't tell me who you are… I can remember… I can remember…' She kept repeating. I realised that her character remained quite the same. This could also be psychologically.
'Sera…'
'No… don't tell me…' She said again as she looked at the photo. 'You're seated with dad's side of the family… near grandpa Carrick… I take it these are your kids and wife… Wow, you're married… three more people to remember…' She panicked. 'So that makes you my uncle?'
'Wild guess…' I chuckled. 'Yes… I'm your uncle…'
'Are we close?'
'Yeah… we are…' I smiled. 'I practically almost know you inside out…' I smiled.
'Good… can you please tell me anything…' She said again as I realised that she was writing notes on every person that visited.
'You're taking notes?'
'It's the only way I can remember…' She replied. 'So what's your name?'
'John… John Flynn…' I tried.
'You're…' she said again as she flipped some pages. 'You're the psychiatrist?'
'Yes…'
'Ok, so Uncle Elliott an engineer and has his own business, dad has GEH, mum SIP, you psychiatrist, grandparents doctors, Gail housekeeper, Taylor, Sawyer, Ryan bodyguards… Natalie best friend…' She kept listing memorising everyone.
'Sera…' I stopped her. 'Look at me…' I guided gently. 'Memorising things won't help you remember…'
'I can't remember John…' she replied. 'Apparently I also have a boyfriend that I thought was my brother, only to learn that I have a dead brother…' she continued as I realised she was reading her own chart.
'Can you read this?'
'Yes… and I don't know how…' She replied. 'How do I know these stuff?'
'You're in medical school…' I notified.
'I am?'
'Yes…' I continued as it hit me… I brought her a fresh paper and handed it to her. 'Sera, could you please draw me?'
'What?' She asked astonished.
'Draw me…' I ordered gently.
'Do I know how to?' She asked.
'Only one way to find out…' I replied as I handed her the pencil and she started sketching. Her hand ran flawlessly. I realized that consciously she couldn't remember, but unconsciously she was still in there. Here memory wasn't totally wiped out. After almost 30 minutes, she finished the sketch and handed it to me.
'I can sketch… but how?' She asked as I noticed that the picture was almost life like.
'Subconsciously you remember...' I noticed. 'Can I keep it?'
'Knock yourself out…' She replied back. 'Please, could you tell me how we know each other apart from being my uncle?'
'Well… I've been your psychiatrist, friend, and family since you were born…'
'I needed a psychiatrist? Am I crazy?'
'No… no…' I chuckled. '…far from it. You're actually a very strong minded person… you challenge me… and I happen to be your favourite uncle.' I explained.
'You are?' She asked surprised.
'Yeah… why does this surprise you?'
'You're a psychiatrist… why do I subject myself to someone that can read me?' She asked. 'Dad said that I'm private…'
'You are… but you trust me…' I smiled.
'How do I know you're saying the truth?' She caught me off guard. 'I have a 6 year old cousin and she said that I gave her my locket… Dad told me that she was trying to trick me… Uncle Elliot grounded her…' She explained.
'Well… only you can realise how I'm saying the truth munchkin'…' I smiled as I took her notebook away. 'You cannot study us like you do with school.'
'If I ever go back… I don't remember anything…'
'Consciously you don't Sera, but as you saw with sketching, you still have it in you…' I continued.
'How old are your kids? My cousins… and what's their name?' she asked.
'Derek is the oldest one and he's 8… and Walter is the youngest one… he's 6…' I explained. 'Walter is your favourite…'
'Why?'
'He reminds you of Jason…'
'How did my brother die?' She asked me again. 'My parents don't want to tell me.'
'Um… I don't think it's wise to get into that right now Sera…' I tried again.
'You seem comfortable… till now everybody was on edge…' She noted. She was still perceptive and insightful. 'Why?'
'Sera, we go far back… You see, when you were born, I was the first one to hold you after your parents. Christian asked me to be your godfather.'
'You're my godfather?' She asked in surprise.
'Yeah…' I smiled. 'We used to spend days together… Rhian and I used to take you out with us…'
'Used?'
'After Jason's dead… you distanced yourself from us… me especially…' I explained. '…but after almost 5 years we restored our relationship…'
'Why did I do that?'
'Sera… again… it's too early to talk about this…'
'Just to be sure… Rhian is my aunt?'
'Yeah…' I chuckled. 'You chose the names of my kids as well…'
'I did? We must really be close then…'
'You spend days with us as well…' I smiled. 'You know… we really missed you… you've spent two whole months with us…'
'Why did I do that?'
'Circumstances Sera…' I said again. I didn't want to give her anything that would sadden her or ruin any progress she was doing. 'Sera… let me ask you this… how do you feel talking to me?'
'What do you mean?'
'Well… how do you feel with me? Your parents told me you were on edge…'
'I don't know… It's just… everybody is afraid of doing anything… or of saying anything… and you… you're speaking your mind as if you knew me all your life… I'm kind of comfortable…'
'What about your parents?'
'I'm hurting them…' She admitted with tears in her eyes. 'What kind of a daughter am I to not remember my own parents? They brought photos and we seem close, and yet I don't know them… I didn't even know their name… I'm such a horrible person…' She let her head drop down.
'Honey…' I started as I lifted her face. 'You're not a horrible person… This is not your fault…'
'It's my brain… it's failing on me…'
'Give yourself some time…'
'Will I ever remember?'
'In time… you may…
'May?'
'Sera, the brain is a complex organ. It has his own ways… and it's different. You need to rest and give yourself some time…' I explained. 'Look… I know you don't remember me…' I started as I pulled out my wallet and pulled out a picture of us together.
'You carry a picture of us?'
'You're family… you're like my own daughter…'
'Why?' She asked astonished.
'…because Sera, you're a great person, and you're a loving one as well…' I smiled. 'You see, Christian and I are brothers… we shared everything… problems… solutions…' I continued. 'You see… you've hated me… you fought me… you pushed me away…'
'Why did I do that? And why do you still love me if I did all of those?'
'…because Sera, you love someone not only in the good parts… but because you want to be there for them whenever they fall… I was glad that you let me in to help you…' I smiled. 'You've almost died 3 more times this year… but you pulled through it… and I know you can through this again…' I encouraged as she handed me back the photograph.
'How do I do it?'
'Will you let me help you? And most importantly… are you willing to trust me blindly although you don't remember me? Because if this is going to work… you need to be open with me…'
'I…' She stuttered.
'Don't give me an answer now… Think about it…' I smiled. 'I'll be around and I'll be visiting you…' I gently ordered. 'I want you to promise me one thing… that you are going to take your time… and take it easy… studying our family won't help… it will only add stress on you.'
'I'll try…' She replied smiling weakly.
'I love you kiddo…' I smiled as I kissed her forehead and covered her till her neck. 'Now rest… ok?' I said again as she nodded.
As I exited her room, Christian and Ana came straight to me. They wanted answers, but none of them were easy… and I couldn't blame them. I was hurt myself that she couldn't remember me. We shared so much… we've been through a lot of things, and yet, she doesn't remember anything.
'Did she recognise you?' Ana started.
'No…' I admitted.
'John how can she forget us?'
'It's a brain injury Christian…'
'I am sensing a 'but'…' Ana noticed.
'Ana… I'm afraid that this amnesia isn't only because of the incident…'
'What do you mean?' Christian asked.
'Sera always blocked anything that hurt her. There is a huge possibility that she doesn't want to remember because she doesn't want to feel any pain. Her brain is playing tricks on her. Most probably she doesn't even know she's doing this…'
'What are you saying?'
'Christian, she went through hell… and inside she is just a kid. She's maybe trying to keep some dignity…'
'…by not remembering?'
'…by forgetting all the pain…' I explained.
'How do you know?' Ana asked as I showed them the sketch she drew.
'She drew this?' Christian asked. 'I thought she doesn't remember anything…'
'That's what I'm saying Christian. In her conscious mind, yes, she has forgotten everything… however she suppressed everything in the unconscious part of the mind.'
'How can we get her to remember?'
'First she needs time… secondly… you need to surround with anything familiar… once she gets home, keep on with your daily routine. Make sure to not add stress… don't push her… she's already worked up on not remembering anything…'
'What if she never does remember?'
'Let's not come to that for now…' I smiled. 'Do you know when she's going to be discharged?'
'Tomorrow morning…' Christian replied.
'Good… make sure to not crowd her. I'll be coming by and talk to her…' I replied as Ana went in.
'John… I need you to be blunt… what's your opinion?' He asked me.
'Christian, I'm not going to lie to you… She may never want to remember…'
'So she won't remember me as her father? She won't love me?'
'Christian… that is the worst case scenario. Let's hope she does regain her memory back…' I tried. 'Have you visited the driver?'
'I don't even want to see him… he got out of here with few bruises and a concussion, while my daughter is lying in that bed not knowing who she is.'
'What about the passenger?'
'He's alive… but he broke both his legs…' He replied. 'They deserve it.'
'Christian… go to her… and try to keep calm.'
'How can I keep calm when my kid doesn't remember me? How would you feel if Derek or Walter lost their memory and had no memory of you and Rhian?'
'I'd be devastated Christian… but she loves you. Love is a very strong emotion Christian…'
'That's the question John… does she still love us?'
'If she doesn't, she wouldn't have let you stay with her… She feels bad already that she's not remembering. Take it easy with her… patience Christian…'
'Yeah…' He replied lost.
'Go to her Christian… and do things that you usually did with her… if you bring back some normality in her life, she may regain her memory…'
Both Ana and I took John's advice. It usually always worked. She started going to therapy, and talking about what she felt. She still couldn't remember a damned thing. Not even her laptop password. At least I knew it… I'm glad she trusted me with it back in the days. She tried viewing photos, videos… but nothing worked. She was still clueless. Carter was another mess. He tried reminding her every moment they shared together… he tried everything, but her memory still remained lost.
'Christian… what have the neurologists say?' She asked as I closed the file filled with information that all doctors given us.
'They can't do anything…' I replied defeated. 'One of them suggested electroshock therapy… but it can cause other repercussions… I'm not subjecting our daughter to that…'
'Christian… I miss her. She's here, but at the same time she's not…' Ana cried.
'I know… I miss her too…'
Sera's POV
I was still trying to place everything into my mind. I couldn't remember this place. It looked nice, and everyone was being attentive to anything they did around me. I couldn't help but feel guilty at what I was doing to my parents. They love me… they're doing everything they can, and yet I can't remember.
I overheard them talking outside dad's study. I slid to the floor, and tears streamed down my face.
'Christian we only got to have months with her…' Mum replied again as I heard dad's footsteps. 'I want her back… I want my baby back…'
'I do too Ana… but we can't let her see us like this… she's trying…she really is…' He explained.
'Christian she's fucking frustrated. She's panicking… she can't do this…'
'Ana… we'll do whatever it takes…'
'I know… but how long do you think she will co-operate?'
'We can't let her give up…' He insisted.
'… and how are you planning to do that Christian? If you haven't noticed as yet, a week almost passed and she is not remembering fucking anything… Our kid is in deep shit Grey and we can't do anything…' She fought him. I realised I was breaking them down… I realised I was in the middle of their arguments.
I hugged my knees and squeezed my eyes down. They were doing everything they could. Dad took me to about 50 neurologists. He claimed they're the best… and none of them could do anything. John tried talking me through things… We've tried hypnosis… and nothing worked. Why was this happening? Why?
'Sera…' Gail touched my shoulder lightly as I looked up to her.
'Hi…' I chocked.
'Are you ok honey?'
'Not really…' I admitted. 'Gail… do I usually talk to you when something happens?'
'Yes honey…' She smiled as she helped me up. 'Come on… let's go to the living room…' She guided me downstairs as pulled me to her side. 'What's wrong baby girl?'
'They're fighting… because of me… I've ruined this family…' I started. 'What kind of a person am I to forget my parents? Who does that?'
'Honey… this stress won't do you any good… You're stressing yourself out and it won't help you remember…' She tried gently as I rubbed my head. 'Sera… are you ok?' She asked again.
'My head… it hurts…' I said again as I started to hear ringing and brought both my hands to my ears.
'Sera?' She tried stopping me.
'It hurts… it hurts…' I said again.
Gail's POV
She kept whimpering and crouching in pain. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she started bleeding from her nose again.
'Sera?' I tried again as she closed her eyes tight.
'My head… my ears…' She said again. 'Please make it stop…' She begged stuttering. Her face paled and she fell forward to the floor.
'Christian! Ana!' I shouted as I held her upright. 'Christian!' I shouted again as both came running in.
Christian's POV
'Ana… we need to be strong… at least for her.'
'Christian you seem to be fucking unaffected by this!' Ana threw back.
'Unaffected? I'm unaffected by this? My daughter doesn't remember that I'm her father. She doesn't know who she is and she doesn't fucking know who we are… I'm the same as dead to her… She doesn't fucking know me Anastasia… and I can't just fix her. We never could Anastasia. Her anorexia seems to be getting its claws deeper into her, and we can't leave her alone because she fucking relapses Anastasia… I'm breaking down and this is tearing me apart.' I shouted back.
'Stop shouting Christian… it's not helping…'
'What do you want me to do Anastasia? Just tell me! My only child doesn't know me. I'm abandoned by her. Just like I left her…' I finally broke down.
'Christian…'
'I deserve it… this is what she felt when I ignored her… when I hurt her… when I dishonoured her…'
'Christian this is not your fault…'
'How is it fucking not Anastasia? I'm her father… I'm supposed to have all the answers, and I have none…' I said again as Gail's shouting caught us off guard.
'Christian Ana!' She shouted again, as we ran out following the voice. We went to the living room and there she was, whimpering in pain and bleeding.
'What the fuck happened?' I asked Gail as I removed my jacket and held my daughter from her shoulders.
'Sera… Sera…' I tried as Ana brought a towel and placed it to her nose. 'Sera, let your head go…' I begged as I tried removing her hands from her head.
'My head… my head…' She whimpered. 'I can't see…'
'What?'
'I can't see… Switch on the light… please switch on the light…' She begged as her eyes darted, while Ana and I exchanged gazes.
'Gail, call my mother…'
'Sera…' I tried again.
'I can't see… I…' She stuttered again as her eyes rolled back and her body collapsed to the ground. 'Shit… Sera… Sera…' I tried again.
'Christian…' Ana started as I lifted her off.
'Call my mother, tell her we're coming in now…'
