Christian's POV
'Carter…' I asked as I stood up and moved towards him. 'What happened?' I asked again as he burst into tears.
'It's so messed up… she won't listen to anyone…'
'Carter… just calm down… and tell us everything…' Ana tried as she pulled him to sit down.
'She's dying…' He blurted out.
'Who's dying?' I asked concerned as I sat on the coffee table in front of him.
'Carter… start from the beginning…' Ana tried.
'We… Sera, had been having some complications these last few weeks… dizziness, headaches, severe nausea. She fainted multiple times… her feet resembles more a tyre then feet.' He started. 'She's not even peeing…' He continued. 'This morning even the light was bothering her… We made some tests… and Dr. Greene stated that Sera is suffering from Eclampsia…' He blurted out.
'What do you mean?' Ana replied while I remained staring stunned at him.
'It means that she can either bleed to death while giving birth, or have multiple organ failure…' He continued.
'What did Greene suggest?' I finally asked. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It finally made sense. That is why she wasn't coming to work…why she was constantly exhausted.
'She said that the best option is termination of the pregnancy…' He replied.
'Then do it…' I replied.
'Easy for you to say Christian…' He threw back. 'Sera doesn't want to terminate it…'
'What?' Both Ana and I asked in unison.
'She doesn't want to terminate the pregnancy. She wants to take it to full term, and have the boy…' I replied. 'She just made the decision and she's not changing her mind…' He replied.
'Oh God…' Ana replied. 'Did you have a second opinion?'
'Dr. Greene consulted another doctor. They had the same prognosis…' He cried. 'I'm losing her... Please talk to her… maybe she'll listen to you!' He begged.
'How bad is this?'
'Very bad…' He replied. Her kidneys are already malfunctioning, but she won't listen to me. She just took the decision on her own. She doesn't listen to me… I don't want to lose her…' He admitted.
'We'll talk to her… Now before it's too late…' I replied.
Carter's POV
'Mr. Brosnan…' Kathleen started. 'I've been trying to reach you.'
'What's wrong?' I asked concerned.
'Mrs. Brosnan is very sick… She begged me not to tell you…'
'Where is she?' I cut her off.
'She's resting in the living room.' She replied as I heard Sera calling for me.
'I'll go to her.'
'Carter…' She chocked.
'Hey baby… sorry I left like that…'
'Don't worry…' She smiled weakly. 'It's fine…' She continued as she kissed me. 'I was worried about you… We've tried calling you…'
'I know…' I continued as Christian and Ana came in. 'Listen… your parents…'
'You told them?' She cut me off as I helped her to a seating position as she looked at me disappointed, while both her parents came in.
'I had to…'
'Carter… you promised this morning…'
'Sera, I couldn't do any other way… you just took this decision on your own…'
'I'm carrying him…' She threw back.
'Carter…' Ana stopped me. 'Give us some time please…' She asked me as I nodded and left them alone.
Christian's POV
I looked at her and she looked nothing like she used to be. She had a sick shade of yellow in her face, she was struggling to breath. I couldn't believe what this pregnancy did to her. Automatically I went to her and hugged her tight to me. I cried on her shoulder. I didn't want to lose her. Ana joined in. We both couldn't hold any longer.
'Mum… dad…' She tried as I looked at her face. She looked exhausted.
'How are you feeling?' I tried as I searched for her eyes.
'Like a pregnant woman…' She laughed lightly.
'This is no laughing situation…' Ana stopped her.
'What do you expect me to do mother? Cry over this?'
'Sera… please…'
'Dad… I'm not terminating this pregnancy, I thought I would never get pregnant because of my previous anorexia… but God blessed me with a beautiful son. I'm not killing him…'
'So you're letting him kill you?' I threw back as I paced away.
'Eclampsia is killing me… not the baby dad…' She reached my own voice as I passed my hand through my hair.
'They baby brought on eclampsia…' I said again.
'Christian… limit your shouting…' Ana stopped me. 'The least stress can send them both…'
'Mum… stop walking on eggshells around me…' Sera stopped her. 'I'm going to be fine. I'm just like any other pregnant woman.'
'No Sera, you are just like that 5% to 7% of the world's population pregnant women.' I threw back as I moved forward to her and searched for her eyes. 'Sera… I don't want to lose you…'
'Dad you won't…'
'We called Dr. Greene… she explained everything… you will die if you continue with this pregnancy…' I said again.
'Dad…' She started as she grabbed the picture from the coffee table. 'This is Jason Christian Grey Brosnan…' She started. 'He is a human just like we are. What right do I have to kill this beauty? To kill my son? I was thinking dad… there is nothing more important to me than this lovely innocent face. This is not his fault. I love Jason… I've loved him since the day I've known I was pregnant with him. I'm not terminating this pregnancy…'
'Sera… be sensible about this…' Ana tried.
'I am being sensible about this mother!'
'I'm not staying to watch you kill yourself.' I tried again.
'Dad… don't be if you don't want… but I'm keeping this child… he's more important to me than anything in this world. I love him…'
'Sera… please… you'll have other babies… and if you don't manage you can adopt…' I tried again.
'Dad… I want this baby… I want Jason Christian…'
'You named him after me?' I smiled.
'We… Carter and I…' She refrained. 'I'm not killing him.'
'What does Carter think about this?' Ana asked.
'He wants me to terminate… even Dr. Greene… but the choice is mine… I'm carrying him…'
'Sera… please… terminate this pregnancy…' I begged. 'I don't want to lose you…'
'That is what you fail to see daddy…' She replied. 'You will never lose me, because whatever happens I still will always love you, and whatever happens, you'll always have a part of me here.' She explained as she touched my face. I held her hand close to me and kissed it gently.
'Sera…' I cried. 'Please… please… I'm begging you!'
'Dad…' She cried. 'I know this hurts… but I love my baby… and I want to give him a chance in seeing this world.'
'Sera… he'll be without a mother…' Ana tried again.
'He'll have you mum, that loves you as a mother… your love is what keeps me altogether. Don't you think that I'm scared? That I'm afraid of all of this? That I don't want to end everything?' She explained. 'I want to… but then I remember about this beauty and joy inside of me. I cannot kill such an innocent life… I cannot and I won't…'
'Please Sera…' Ana begged.
'Mum… I can't and I won't terminate this… Please understand…'
'We can never understand Sera…'
'Dad… you have to… in a month or two, I have to give birth to my son prematurely because we can both die… you all have to be ready for this… like I have to be…'
'So what? You're giving us only two more months maximum with you?' I cried. 'Please Sera! Don't do this…' I cried. 'Please don't… your life is much…'
'Don't say it dad… This life in me is more important… I'm just a vessel…'
'…but you're our kid…' Ana tried again.
'I love you mum… I love you dad! So damn much… but I love this baby too… he's part of me… I want to give him a chance to breathe…'
'Whilst killing you?' I cried.
'Daddy don't do that…' She begged. 'Don't make me chose between you and the baby…'
'You're making us choose that Sera… and we choose you automatically… Please terminate this pregnancy! Please…' I begged.
'Dad… this time I have to go against what you all want. It's my body… my baby and my life…'
'…and you're throwing it away…'
'Mum… dad, I love you so much… and you've done everything for me… it's time I'd do the same with to my baby… my son…' She smiled weakly. 'I know this is going to be hard… but everything will be forgotten, just like we all moved on from Jason's death. It's time we face the truth… and we'll work through this…'
'We don't want you to die…'
'…and I'll fight as hell to stay with you guys… but I'm not killing my baby…' She said again. 'Look I need you guys to be strong for me. I can't do this on my own, and I won't back out from my decision…'
'Please Sera… think this over again…'
'Dad… this time you cannot tell me what to do…' She tried gently. 'I know this is hard on all of you… but I'll be fine… and my baby will be fine… I love him and I need him as much as you need me… Mum, dad, please try to understand.'
'No Sera… we can never understand this…' Ana finally broke down. 'I've waited so long to have you… I've cried every night hoping I'll get pregnant with you… and then I finally did… then anorexia almost robbed your life away from us, and now your son is also taking you away from us?'
'No we can never understand Sera, and we never will…' I broke down.
'If you really do love me, you'd support me in any of my decisions…'
'And we do… just not in this…' Ana said again.
'Sera please… think this over…'
'I did… my decision is that I'm keeping my baby…'
'Sera…'
'Mummy please…' she said again. 'Mum dad, I need you to be strong… for both Carter and me. We both need you now… more than ever…'
'Sera, I won't stand here watching you die… I cannot just do that…'
'Then don't dad… but there is absolutely nothing you can do to change my mind…' She replied. 'Dad… I need you… Please don't leave me alone…'
'Sera, why don't you come to Aspen? We can take care of you… we can help you out while Carter is at work…' Ana suggested.
'Mum, I don't want to take your time…'
'Sera, we want you…' I tried again.
'…and you won't be alone… we can talk… I can help you out and care for you. What if you're alone and something happens?' Ana tried again.
'Mummy…'
'Sera… please… at least come home with us…' I begged again.
'Ok…' She smiled. 'Carter…' She called as he quickly came running in.
'What is it? Is everything ok?'
'Yeah…' She smiled weakly. 'Listen, is it ok if we move to my parents for a couple of weeks?'
'Yes sure… I was going to ask that. I'm not leaving you alone… not like this…' He said again.
'Go get some things ready…' I told him. 'Tonight you're staying with us… no matter how long it takes…' I smiled weakly.
Another month and a half passed and we watched her deteriorate before our eyes. She was getting weaker and she barely had the energy to move. We've tried convincing her to end this pregnancy, but she was stubborn and she wanted this baby so bad. There was nothing I could do to take this pain away from her, but we couldn't. I could do nothing to save her… nothing to help her and nothing to make her see the light.
Ana was with her trying to make her feel more comfortable. I managed to get my hands on the top doctors in America, and they all had the same diagnosis. There was nothing else we could do except wait. Wait and hoping for the best.
'Christian?' Ana called. 'Get me a paper bag…' She said again as I went to them.
'How is she?' I asked her.
'Dad… I can hear you…' She chuckled. She still had some humour left in her, regarding of all the pain she was going through. 'I'll be ok…' She smiled weakly as she cringed again in pain.
'Do you need to go to the bathroom?' Ana smiled gently.
'I think so…' Sera replied as we helped her up, but she soon almost fell over, if I didn't hold her tightly. 'Argh…' she cringed as there was a puddle on the floor.
'Oh God…' Ana replied as we sat her down gently.
'I think… my water just broke…' Sera smiled.
'Call Carter… call an ambulance…' Ana quickly ordered as I was on it stat. My baby was having her baby. The joy of the birth was soon replaced with sadness. We all knew what this meant. 'Sera… how far are the contractions?' Ana asked again.
'I… don't know…' She cringed again. 'I think around 3 minutes apart…' She replied. 'He can't be born now… it's too early…'
'Hi… yes… my daughter is having her baby now… yes it's urgent… 3 minutes apart… yes… she has eclampsia… please hurry up…' I quickly hung up as I moved to my daughter and held her hand while she squeezed tight, while Ana quickly called my parents, Kate, and Elliott and John and Rhian.
'Sera, you know that this was something that had to happen…' Ana tried supressing the tears.
'Mum… Dad…' She cringed again. 'I'm having Jason… I'm having my baby…' She smiled. She was so happy. I didn't want to cry in front of her… but I couldn't do otherwise. She started having shortness of breath and I couldn't help her. I quickly called Carter and told him to meet us at the hospital.
'Dammit… when is that ambulance coming?' I said more rhetorically, as I rubbed her back. Gail quickly came in with the EMT's. They quickly took her in. The put an oxygen mask over her face to try and help her breath, but she was fading fast.
'Dad…' She chocked. 'Dad…'
'Yes… yes… tell me baby…'
'Dad… If… If… I don't make it…' She tried.
'Don't talk like that…' I begged her as I held her hand as they transferred her to the stretcher.
'Dad… near Jason. I want to be buried near Jason…' She insisted as they hooked her up to some things.
'Her blood pressure is too high…' One of the EMTs said.
'Near… Jason…' She insisted again as she held my hand before she lost consciousness.
'Sera… Sera!'
'Sir… you need to move back…'
Dr. Greene's POV
'Hello Dr. Greene…' I greeted.
'It's Carter… my wife… Sera… her water just broke. We're bringing her in now…'
'Carter… calm down… take a deep breath and repeat again.' I stopped him.
'Sera, the baby's coming now… Please you have to help her…'
'I'll have everything ready on your arrival.'
'She's in the ER…' He replied.
'I'll be right down…'
She came in unconscious. Her blood pressure was very high and it was putting risk on both her and the baby. I had to do anything I could in keeping her alive, but things didn't look good. Carter remained with her the whole time.
'We have to do an emergency C-section…' I notified both her parents and her husband. 'Carter, if you want you can stay…'
'I'm staying…' He replied. 'Please… make her live…' He begged.
'I'll do everything in my power…' I replied as we prepped her up.
We had to be aggressive. We couldn't risk letting her bleed to death. The organ failure was already an issue, but we had to try our best in keeping her alive. There were cases like these… rare… but still occurred, that both the baby and the mother lived. We had to hope for the best.
Carter seemed to be lost. He wanted his wife more than anything. I had to keep my emotions aside, and save everyone, but sometimes we had to make a choice, and it is never easy. Sometimes I wonder why I chose this line, but then I remember all those lives I helped. All those babies that I've seen being born and held for the first time.
'Get me a towel…' I ordered as one of the nurses came forward while I handed her the boy and he started crying instantaneously.
'Congratulations Carter, you have a boy…'
'Doctor…' The anaesthesiologist shouted. 'Blood pressure's dropping heart rate…'
'Dammit…' I realised this wasn't going to end well. 'Take Mr. Brosnan out… now…' I ordered.
'No… no… I want to stay with my wife.'
'Carter… let me work… I'll do anything I can…'
'Please… save her!' He begged as the nurse took him out with his baby.
Christian's POV
'Carter…' I called as he came out of the operating theatre. He was broken… crying… 'No… no… it can't be…' I automatically replied, as Ana fell to the floor while Kate held her tight. 'No… no…' I cried again. She can't be dead…' I said again while Carter rested to the wall and crumbled down. I felt my whole world ended… ended with my kid… I looked at Ana, and my mother came beside me. She hugged me tight. She was crying herself, but she tried being strong for us. Carter's parents were also there. They went to their son.
Anastasia's POV
'Ana… Ana… this isn't doing any good…' Kate tried. 'We still don't know anything. They'll probably save her…' She tried.
'I want my daughter Kate… I want her…' I cried. Her smile quickly flashed in front of my eyes. I only wanted to hold her, even for another minute. Soon Dr. Greene came out, but none of us could make anything from the expression on her face.
