Christian's POV
I was sitting down, still holding Anastasia's hands into mine. We were lost… we didn't know what to do. We couldn't face this. Neither Carter could. How could this happen? To her most of all. Dr. Greene managed to get the best doctors in town to work on my daughter's case. I wanted to know if she was going to be ok. If she was going to be fine. There were too many things going on that we didn't even comprehend anything. My body was there… but my brain and heart was still with my daughter.
Carter tried keeping Jason in control. We understood how this was. The baby was almost motherless. This poor child… my daughter had the toughest life, and her son, was going to have one as well…
The nurse came to tell us that our daughter is death. That there was nothing they could. No… no… no… no… this can't be… not now not ever. It's not supposed to go on like this. The parents have to die first, and not watch their daughter die. Our daughter suffering and we can't do nothing about it. This can't be… I've fought for her… I'd do anything to keep her with us… but not die… It's just too hard to even understand.
My mother and father remained with us the whole time. I was so grateful for them for staying with us during these toughest times. At least they could be our shoulder for the time being. I didn't want her to leave… I didn't want her to die… nobody wanted this… and us especially.
Flashback – 2 hours ago
They were shocking her. Her body jerked. No parent would want to see that on their kids… their life line. Silent tears streamed down my face. I couldn't do this… I don't want to accept this. I want my baby… Ana remained with me, and she cried. She begged and prayed and begged again… For once, in my life, I felt closer to God, and prayed with the most devotion I could find in my heart.
Flashbacks of her smile came into my mind. Her words… her voice… her love…
'Daddy! Catch me!' Her voice echoed into my mind. 'I love you daddy!' It kept repeating. 'If I got hurt, will you fix me? You wouldn't let me die?' Her voice echoed again.
I promised her I wouldn't let her die… I promised her I'll always catch her… but I was a continuous failure to her. First I abandoned her, than I let her anorexia go unnoticed… I've neglected her emotionally and as a father… I lost all those years with her… only to learn that I only had few more to spare with her.
I saw the nurse look at the watch and mumble something.
'No… no…no… no….' I started. 'This can't be!' I said again as Ana held on to my hand as I went straight into her room while a nurse came forward to push us out.
'Sir… you cannot…'
'No… she cannot be death…' I cried. 'She cannot be death!' I cried again.
'I'm very sorry…' The nurse said again.
'Sera… please wake up!' I shook her from her shoulders. 'Wake up… please wake up!' I cried while Ana crumbled to the floor, as Carter held her tight to him and they cried on each other's shoulders. 'Noooo…' I cried as I hugged her close to me.
'Christian…' Greene started as she placed her hand over my shoulder.
'What you're giving up?' I said as I looked straight into her eyes.
'There's…'
'Shock her again…' I ordered with tears in my eyes. I felt broken. I'd do anything to have my daughter with me.
'Christian… We did the best we could… She's been death for over a minute now.'
'Shock her again…' I said again this time, my own voice didn't even convince me. 'Please Cassandra, Please…' I begged her. 'Shock her again…' I cried. 'Please…' I begged again as she grabbed the paddles.
'Move back Christian…' She ordered. 'Push 10mg of Epi…'
'Dr. We've already given her 40 in total…'
'Give her another 10…' She ordered while the nurse obliged. 'Start compressions…' She continued as the other doctor intubated my daughter and started pumping oxygen. 'Charge… 520…' She ordered. 'Clear…' She said again as she shocked her, and her body jerked again. They continued the compressions; however the monitor still remained flat line. 'Come on Sera… Fight… It's time to fight…' She said. 'Charge again…' She ordered as the nurses obliged. 'Clear…' She ordered as she shocked her again. 'Oh my God…' She replied as the monitor continued beeping again at a constant sound. Music to my ears. 'We have a pulse!' She said again as the other doctor continued pumping her with oxygen.
'What does it mean?' I asked as Ana raised her head.
'It means she's alive Christian…' She said again, as they started hooking her up again. '…but she's not out of the woods as yet.' She replied.
'She's alive?' Ana asked.
'She…' I smiled weakly as I moved forward and kissed my daughter's forehead. 'She's alive?'
'Yes…' She replied again. '…but we need to work… so please move back Christian…' She ordered.
End of Flashback
'Christian?' Carter came forward. 'Your coffee…' He said as he handed me the coffee and continued cradling Jason.
'Let me take him Carter…' Ana smiled. 'You need to rest…' She continued as she took Jason into her arms.
'He looks just like her… doesn't he?' Carter smiled.
'We make beautiful babies Carter…' I smiled weakly. 'My daughter happens to be that…'
'You're right there…' He smiled back.
'Finally… you're talking you two…' Ana replied.
'Carter… I never did something like this… I guess there's always the first time… but I'm sorry I reacted like that at first.'
'I'd do the same if it was my daughter…' He smiled weakly as Dr. Greene entered her office. We all stood up immediately. She had this exhausted look on her face, but a relieved one. She went straight to the opposite side of the desk and sat down.
'Your daughter is one hell of a fighter Christian…' She started. 'Just like you two…' She smiled weakly.
'How is she?' Carter asked.
'I'm not going to beat around the bush…' She started. 'There is still a chance that she won't make it.' She continued. '...and even if she'll make it. She'll have to live on anti-histamine medications for all her life, she has to have a limited restricted diet, and she has to pay a lot of attention on not encountering any infection. The simplest cold can kill her.' She finished as she opened the files. 'Please sit…' She ordered as we all obliged. Ana came beside me with Jason in her arms. I couldn't believe that my baby made such a handsome baby. Automatically my hands reached to hold him and hug him close to me. Ana smiled at my affection. 'We've conducted some new tests…' She started again. 'She has a long way to go… and you are looking at a rather huge expense…'
'Money isn't a problem…' I replied. That's why I have money. I'd rather spend all I can to keep her with me. Besides. It's probably nothing to the millions I make every day. 'Do whatever you can… for as long as you keep her alive… Her life is hanging in the balance. '
'Christian… it doesn't depend only on us. The FDA has to approve two major organ donations.' She started. 'She needs both a kidney and a liver transplant, and the faster we can get them is better. We also need to change her blood. She may have to come to the hospital every month to have this procedure.'
'What do you mean?' Carter asked.
'It means…' Ana started. 'That her blood is too sick… that her own body isn't able to filter it.'
'Yes Anastasia…' Dr. Greene replied. '…and besides that, her own body may reject both the organs and the blood, which may still kill her, or worse leave her organ deficient.' She explained. 'You should also be prepared for any brain damage. She had been in oxygen debt for a minute or so. We wouldn't know if she has any brain damage or mobility until she wakes up, which she won't for now.' She continued. 'We've induced her in a coma so as to help her own body in repairing itself.'
'What about the organ donation? What's the problem with that?' Carter asked again.
'The FDA has to approve it. Now in very rare cases, women with eclampsia manage to make it through. Sera seems to be one of them. But one in every 3 women that manages to take a turn for the upside, manage to also have the organ failure.'
'What if I donate mine? We're compatible…' I replied. 'She was going to need a liver back when she was 17… I can give her mine…'
'Christian, it's not that simple. Your body is continuously fighting pathogens. The organ that we need has to be clean. The least fighting her body can do may send her into frenzy again.' She explained. '…and we don't have that much time to do this procedure. You would have to be starved for at least a day before the surgery; you'd have to have done a lot of medical tests, and then the whole surgery…' She explained.
'I can get my hands on the FDA…' Carter replied. 'Some own me a favour… I guess this is the time…'
'If you know people… that's good…' She smiled as he quickly dialled the number and started talking, he soon turned back to us. 'Is it ok if they bring the organs in half an hour?' He asked us.
'That's brilliant…' She smiled. 'I'll prep her into surgery.' She replied as he hung up and she called one of the nurses. 'Carter, Anastasia, Christian…' She started again as she hung up. 'I'm going to be blunt and straight to the point. Sera is undergoing a major 9 hour surgery by the top organ transplant surgeon. I must advise you that she may die on the table, and there will be nothing anyone can do to save her…' She said in the utmost seriousness. 'I am making sure that I'm clear so that nobody tells me that you weren't advised about this.' She ordered as she took out three papers. 'I need you to sign these papers for the surgery to take place…' She ordered as we instantly took the pen and did so.
'Dr. Greene, please keep my daughter alive…' I begged her.
'She's a fighter Christian… Fighters don't give up…' She smiled.
Carter's POV
It's been two hours already that she has been under the knife. Ana and Christian had been supportive all the way. They helped me care for our son. He was now discharged and able to come home. But I wasn't ready to leave my wife alone here… fighting for her life.
Jason is such as sweetheart. He grabbed my index finger into his whole hand. I wanted Sera to see this… to feel this… she chose to carry our little son, no matter what. I admire her courage. It was reckless, but love does conquer everything. I was feeding him his bottle. Damn… how I wish Sera was here to see us like this. She'd probably be taking photos of us… like she did when I first started cooking. She laughed her guts out that day. I managed to burn the curry. She soon came and took over on the condition that she tells me what to do, and I'll follow every instruction. However, from dinner, in turned into a hot steaming sex session. Damn… I love making love to her. She's so beautiful… Even pregnancy suited her. One thing was for sure. I wasn't going to get her pregnant again. Not now not ever… One kid is enough… I don't want her to go through this over again. She's more important than anything in this world… I just want her.
'Carter… any changes?' Christian came in with Anastasia beside him and Taylor behind him.
'No…'I replied. 'Still no word…' I continued as he took Jason from my arms.
'Go home and get showered… you're stinking Carter…' He ordered.
'…but…'
'What would Sera tell you if she were here?'
'To get my stinking under control… or she'll threaten me to take me to a car wash…'
'Good… then off you go…'
'What if?'
'We'll call you…' He smiled gently.
'Oh God…' Ana said as she cringed her face. 'What's that smell?' She asked as she held her nose.
'Uh… I guess that's me…' I replied.
'…and my daughter puts up with this?'
'Oh no she doesn't…' I replied. 'She threatens…'
'I taught her right…' She smiled. 'Go and take a shower…' She replied. 'If there's any changes we'll call you…' She smiled.
'I'll only be an hour long...'
'Don't rush…' Christian ordered. 'Take your time…' He smiled as I was to reach for Jason. 'Leave him here…' He smiled. 'We'll take care of him…' He smiled.
'His bottle is in the bag… His nappies…'
'Carter…' Anastasia stopped me. 'I've raised two kids… I know how things go…' She smiled as she turned to Luke. 'Luke, please drive Mr. Brosnan home, and stay with him…'
'There's no need really…'
'We don't want you to be in accident…' Christian replied. 'Just shut up and accept our help…'
'Thanks Christian…' I smiled weakly. 'Call me if there's anything new…'
'We'll do…' He smiled back.
Christian's POV – 30 minutes later
'Damn… how long are they taking…'
'Christian… you know it's a major surgery…' Ana replied as she placed Jason in his crib. 'No news is better than bad news Christian…'
'You're right…' I continued pacing.
'Christian… what's wrong?' She asked me as she rubbed my back.
'Anastasia, I can't help it but feel all the failures I did with her. She's the perfect daughter I could have ever asked for. She fought for everything into her life… and I feel like I've failed her.'
'You know she loves us…'
'I know she does… but… look at how much pain we've put her through… emotionally, physically… mentally… and now… she's on her death bed… make it or break it…'
'Christian she is a fighter… you heard what Greene said… She is a fighter…'
'Anastasia, I don't want Sera and Carter to live away from us anymore… I know they want their privacy… but I can't bear the thought of losing her…'
'She will need help once gets back home…' she replied. 'I've already talked to Carter and he agreed that they should stay with us…' She smiled.
'I'll work from home... it's my company… I need to be with my daughter… now more than ever…' I replied.
'We can take it in shifts…' She suggested.
'I don't mind spending my days with my daughter…' I replied. 'Whether you accept this or not Ana, you had been a better parent than me…'
'Christian what would Sera tell you right now?'
'To not self-loath?'
'Exactly…' She smiled. 'She loves us despite our imperfections… despite our failure… she has always wanted us no matter what Christian…' She smiled.
'I'm not self-loathing Anastasia… I just want to be with her… I want my daughter to call me daddy again… I want to hear her telling me that she loves me… I want…'
'I want that too Christian…' She smiled. '…and we'll hopefully get that chance to hear her again.' She smiled with tears in her eyes as Jason started crying again.
'She's not going to be able to care for Jason during these parts… and we both know she'll push through her pain to care for him…'
'Well I won't let her…' Anastasia smiled. 'I'm still not old and I can still care for a baby…' She continued. 'Isn't that right Jason?' She said in a funny voice as she smelled his buttocks. 'Oh my… you're just like your father aren't you Mr?' She asked him. 'Christian… get me the nappies… he needs a change…' She smiled.
'Let me do it…' I offered.
'No way in hell!' She replied. 'Last time our daughter needed a change, I wondered if it was a baboon that changed her or you…'
'I was still learning…' I said defensively as I handed her everything.
'And you still are…' She smiled weakly.
'You know… I miss my 6 year old daughter…'
'I do too…'
'I really wish to change back time… I would do everything differently…'
'Yeah… I'd do too…' Ana agreed. '…but we're here now Christian… Let's try and look forward…'
