Christian's POV
Almost 10 hours passed from the surgery, and we were still waiting. They said it's a 9 hour surgery… 9… not a damned 10… I just want my baby to be back to me… back to us… There was no way in hell I was going to let her go… not now not ever…
'Christian… please stop pacing…' My mother stopped me.
'Can't you go and check on her?'
'They won't let neither me nor your father Christian… we're family… and Dr. McCoy is a very good surgeon…'
'I hope he's not what his surname implies…' I replied. '…and I don't want good… I want the best for my daughter…'
'Christian, he is…' My father assured me as he cradled Jason to him trying to stop him from crying. 'Where's his bottle? Maybe he's hungry…'
'Here…' Carter came running in with what seemed a now filled baby bag. 'It's not easy shopping for kids… Never thought there would be so many brands…'
'…and till they're three, you wouldn't even know what half of them mean…' Anastasia replied as she took Jason and he sucked on the bottle.
'Any news?'
'Not as yet…' My mother replied as Carter paced along. 'Will you two sit down for a second? It's not helping… and honestly, it's making me feel worse!'
'Sorry mum…' I replied. 'I'm scared…'
'I know son… we all are…' She replied as I let her comfort me, while my father went to Ana and pulled her to his chest. 'It's going to be ok… it's going to be all fine…' She kept repeating.
'What if it's not mother? What if…'
'Shh… don't say that Christian… remember… Carter is also here… and whether you see it or not, he does look up to you… he needs your support Christian…'
'…but I do too mother…' I finally admitted defeat. 'This will kill me… I… I want my baby mummy…' I crumbled.
'Shh… We all want her… put all your faith in God…'
'That's all I have left…' I admitted as three doctors came in.
'Family of Sera Elizabeth Grey Brosnan?' One of them asked which I concluded was McCoy. He looked coy to me. His surname did make him justice.
'We are…' All of us jumped and moved forward.
'Good news… She made it…' He smiled while we all remained staring at him. 'She's alive… with healthy functional organs…' He made it clearer.
'She's alive?' Carter asked.
'Yes she is…'
'Can I see her? Where is she?' He said in one sentence.
'How is she? Will she be able to function normally?' I asked
'What about future repercussions?' Ana asked.
'For now her body is accepting the organs, however we still need to keep an eye on her just in case they're rejected. Once she's discharged, it's imperative, and I cannot emphasise this enough… She shouldn't be left alone at any moment. Someone has to remain with her at all times…'
'That is not of a problem…' I replied. 'They can stay with us.'
'That's settled then.' He replied. 'Also, she would need certain medications that she has to take at exactly the time given. Make sure you give them to her on some food. They may make her sick if she doesn't.'
'What about the blood?' My mother asked.
'Does she need to change it?' My father continued.
'If the liver isn't rejected no… it will filter her body on its own. For now, we're helping her body and organs till they adjust. She's on temporary dialyses, but in about 3 hours we'll remove the dialyses and monitor everything from then onwards.' He continued. 'This is for the husband… It's important that she never gets pregnant again… Never…'
'That's not a problem…' Carter replied. 'I wasn't planning on doing so again…'
'Mr. Brosnan, it may seem obvious to you, but to your wife…'
'She'll understand… we have a son already… I'll make sure of it…' He replied.
'Can we see her?'
'We did wake her up, but she's going to be very groggy. Another good news is that she's fully functional. Don't expect to run a marathon. She will need help in moving around, and she's going to be in a huge amount of pain. It is expected that she'll have some fever every now and then, but if it persists when she's at home, make sure to bring her in immediately. I will tell you everything again when she's discharged.' He explained. 'We're keeping her on painkillers for now.'
'She'll want to hold her son…'
'No… no a 100 times no! The least amount of weight can set her stitches off. Make sure she doesn't lift anything for at least 3 weeks!'
'She's not going to be happy…' Carter half smirked. '…but she's alive… she made it… right?'
'Yes Mr. Brosnan… she made it… you have such a feisty wife… she's a fighter…' he winked at Carter.
'Can we see her?'
'Make sure you're all into scrubs. I don't want her to catch any pathogen.'
'Consider it done...' I replied. 'Room?'
'ICU…' He replied. 'Ward ICU room 22…' He continued.
'We cannot thank you enough… if there's any way we can repay you…'
'Make sure to follow the instructions carefully and I'll be happy with that…' He smiled gently and reassuringly. 'Consider this as a medical miracle. I must admit… God is on your side…'
Carter's POV – 4 weeks later
This was going to be my first day back to work. Away from my baby and away from my son. I just wanted to spend all my time with them. Damn… this was so hard…
'Let me do that for you…' Someone took me out of my thoughts. I turned and almost went ballistic.
'Sera! You know what the doctor's said!'
'The doctor's said to take it easy not that I can't do your tie…' She replied as she held on my hand for support.
'…and they also said that you're not fit enough to stay on your feet…' I replied. 'Damn you're so damned stubborn!'
'Do you want me to show you how truly stubborn I am?' She winked at me as I lifted her off and tucked her in bed again.
'When the time is right yes…' I replied as I kissed her passionately. She moaned gently into my mouth. Damn, I wish I can make love to her. Make love to my baby…
'Carter… you know that we can't do anything for now… and I can't…'
'You have too… don't you think that I don't want to make love to you? Hell yes! But you need to gain all your strength back… and that means no sex for 2 months. We have 4 more weeks to go Sera…'
'Can't wait for them to pass… or else if I feel better…'
'No no no…' I replied as I kissed her again.
'Let me do that tie Mr. Brosnan…' She smiled.
'Hey… what's wrong?' I asked her as I saw her expression changing.
'Nothing…'
'Sera… I know that look…'
'Carter… do you still find me attractive?'
'What? Where the hell is this coming from?' I asked her as I stopped her hands and looked her straight into her eyes.
'Carter… wouldn't you rather be with someone…'
'What? Wouldn't I be with someone what Sera?' I challenged. 'Those scars you have aren't scars of failure… they're scars of success Sera… you fought for your life… and if anything, you look more beautiful than ever. You gave me a son despite that the pregnancy almost took your life… and I don't care how many scars you'll have… because that's what made us and that's what made Jason. I love you Sera Elizabeth… I always have and always will… So please… stop doubting yourself…' I stopped her as I kissed her again. 'Sera, will you try to eat something other than soup today?'
'I'm really in pain…'
'I know… but you need to gain your weight back… you know what the doctors said…'
'I'll try Carter… I promise…'
'What if I'll bring Chinese tonight? You love Chinese…'
'You know what a girl needs…' She chuckled.
'No… I know what my wife loves…' I teased as she finished my tie.
'Oh God… I so want to make love to you…'
'I'm not risking it Sera…'
'Come on Carter! You used to love risks…'
'Not when your life is in the balance…'
'So you're letting me wait?' She tried again.
'Unfortunately yes… hey I'm also doing the wait with you…'
'Uffff…' she pouted while I slid my hands underneath her shirt and ran smooth circles on her back. 'Carter…' She looked at me with that half smile that made all my nerve endings shock in a second. She pulled me from my tie and kissed me passionately. She never took the lead, but when she did she always made me melt to nothing. She ran her hands through my hair and made everything seem double to what was happening or feeling… but I couldn't lose control. I couldn't make love to her… not while she's still recovering.
'Sera…' I said between kissing, while she still searched for my lips. 'Sera..' I said again as I held her from her shoulders and looked her straight into her eyes.
'Please Carter… don't stop…' She begged me as she moved forwards again but I stopped her.
'Sera… I want to do this… I really do… Don't doubt me for a second… but I cannot lose control and make love to you… please understand… I don't want to hurt you…'
'I feel fine Carter… Please… just this once…' She begged me again.
'Sera… I can't… I am also waiting here… but we need to stick together honeydoodle…' I replied gently back as I caught one of her tears. I could see she was getting frustrated. She was still not able to walk because of the pain. She was still not allowed to hold Jason as yet, and she only was bound to either the couch or the bed. She wasn't even allowed to stress herself with paper work from both GEH and the private practice… and this… I think this was her last straw. 'I know you're frustrated… come on… we've come this far… few more baby…'
'I'm tired of waiting… I can't do anything… I'm an invalid…'
'My wife isn't an invalid Sera… She's the most courageous loving person I know…' I scolded her. 'Please… don't do like this… Please Sera…' I replied as Jason started crying.
'He's up…' She replied as she was about to go to him.
'Stay…'
'Come on! He's my son too!'
'…you cannot care for him right now…'
'Just proves my point…' She replied as I brought him on the bed and let him stay beside her.
'I'm getting the bottle from the kitchen… Promise me you won't cradle him or lift him up…' I insisted.
'Just once… all I need is holding him once…'
'Sera… please… just promise me… or else I'll take him downstairs with me…' I challenged.
'Carter…'
'Don't make me… please don't…' I begged.
'Fine…' She chocked.
'Sera…'
'Just… go…' She replied defeated.
Sera's POV
All I wanted was to have a normal family… a normal life… be a normal mother, where all I wanted was to hold my son close to me and love him, and be able to care for him. Just do anything a mother would do… Feel all that feeling of Jason being on my shoulder. But I couldn't… I couldn't make love to my husband… I couldn't walk… I couldn't change or even feed my son… Nothing…
'You deserve more little one…' I chocked as I tickled his tummy and he seemed to like it. 'If you'd only knew…' I smiled weakly as I tried lifting him off, but a sharp pain in my side stopped me from even pulling him on my lap. 'Yeah… just a failure for a mother…' I broke down.
Carter's POV
I heard her from behind the door. It broke my heart seeing her like that… but we couldn't do anything. Time could only tell. I was worried she'll end up in a depression. This wasn't easy on her. And it was driving her crazy. I went downstairs only to find Christian doing a cup of tea.
'Morning Carter…' He smiled weakly. 'You look like you've been hit with a tonne of brick…' He chuckled. 'Jason kept you up? He didn't cry… at least we didn't hear him…'
'No…' I replied as I switched on the kettle. 'It's not that…' I continued as I rested my back to the edge of the breakfast table. 'Christian, can I talk to you?'
'Of course son…' He replied as he pulled a chair. 'What is it?'
'I don't know what to do… Sera's losing it… the fact that she can't hold Jason is already frustrating her… and now…'
'Now what?' He asked again.
'She wants to make love Christian… We can't for now… but… she's getting frustrated… and I just heard her say that she's an invalid and a failure… What am I going to do?'
'It's not an easy thing Carter…' He replied.
'I'm afraid she'll fall into a depression or something…' I replied. 'What can I do to help her?'
'Love her… as a husband as a companion… make her feel special…'
'She is… and I love her with all my heart…'
'I'll call John… he can help her out…' He replied as the kettle started whistling. I stood up and prepared Jason's bottle.
'Where's Ana?' I asked him.
'She left to work early. She had to pick up some things for Jason and Sera on the way. She'll be home by 2pm… why? Do you need anything?'
'Nappies and some toiletries…' I replied.
'Leave them for me…' He smiled reassuringly. 'Toiletries the green ones?' He asked again.
'Yes…' I replied.
'You're going to GEH today?'
'Yes… just checking on the 602…' I replied. We had been merging my company and his since the charity ball. I never regret that day. I've become a man.
'Could you ask Andrea to send me the files from last month's accounts?'
'Sure…' I smiled. 'I better get this to Jason before he blows the roof off.'
'Yeah…' He chuckled.
Christian's POV
I checked on both my daughter and Jason before I left the house to get some quick needs that both Jason and Sera needed. She was finally sleeping. I didn't bother to wake her up. The night was already giving her a lot of trouble due to all the pain. I just wanted to take that pain away. Carter and I remained with her trying to control the fever whilst Ana took care of Jason. The kid never seemed to get tired in our arms. Just as my baby was…
Gail came to take Jason just in case he woke up crying. We didn't want him to wake her up. She was exhausted… I quickly made my way out, wanting to get back home while she's still asleep. I wasn't supposed to take that long.
Sera's POV
Loud cries woke me up. I looked around but Jason wasn't there. 'Maybe Gail took him?' I thought to myself as I stood up and made my way to the door. I just wanted to be near my son. He was crying… this wasn't his hungry nor his change cry. I was getting used to it. It was the 'I want daddy or mummy' cry. Such a sweetheart.
'Dad?' I called hoping he would either bring Jason or help me downstairs. 'Dad?' I called again, but there was no response. 'Guess stairs alone…' I smiled to myself. I started going down slowly but after few steps I was finding it difficult to even catch my breath, not to mention that everywhere was hurting. 'FUCKING STAIRS!' I said irritated as I continued slowly. 'Dad?' I called again this time a little louder.
'Sera?' Gail called from the bottom of the stairs with Jason in her arms. 'Oh God… stay there… your father will soon be here…'
'I'm fine…' I replied as I took another few steps.
Gail's POV
'Sera… don't push it… let me set Jason in the crib…'
'No' She insisted… 'don't he needs comfort…' She replied as his cries subsided while l rocked him to and fro. She looked at us losing focus on the stairs and smiled, only she missed a step and fell to her back.
'Oh God… Sera!' I panicked as Christian came running in.
'I'm fine…' She insisted as she tried getting up again.
Christian's POV
'Sera stay right there… don't move!' I ordered as I climbed the stairs two at a time.
'Dad… I'm fine…' She insisted as I looked her straight into her eyes.
'I don't care… you know you are to call me or anyone for the matter if you want to come down…'
'I did…' She replied. 'After few times I realized you weren't here… I'm fine dad…' She smiled weakly as she stood up holding her sides.
'You're in pain…' I stated as I lifted her off bridal style. 'Don't even dare challenge me right now young lady… I'm this close to have one of my famous talks with you to learn how to take care of yourself…' I replied as I took her to the couch and placed the duvet on top of her. 'Sera honey… you know that these are the toughest parts… Honey… everything will be ok… just have patience…'
'I'm tired of this dad…' She admitted.
'I know baby… I know…' I replied. 'Look, I brought some fresh pesto Genovese… your favourite…' I started. 'I'll make you some pasta, and you have to eat it… ok?'
'Dad…'
'I know soup is the most easy thing right now… but you need to eat something else other than soup. You're losing weight again… and you can't afford to do it right now… ok?'
'Ok…' She finally gave in. 'On one condition…'
'What?' I smiled.
'Can I eat in the kitchen? I'm tired of being tied to the couch!'
'Let me tell you what… We'll eat together here on the couch… how does that sound?'
'Not as appealing as mine… but ok…' She replied whilst I kissed her forehead.
'Sera… You know I love you right?'
'I know daddy…' She smiled as Gail returned back with some painkillers a slice of bread and a glass of water.
'Time for your meds Sera…'
'Not on an empty stomach…' I replied sternly.
'Yes sir…' She chuckled as she chewed her bread thoroughly. I waited till it was all finished. I handed her the meds and in few seconds they were also gone.
'Good girl…' I smiled. 'I'll go make you the pasta… I'll be right back…'
'Stay Christian…' Gail smiled. 'I'll do it…' She continued. 'Are you hungry?'
'We both are…' I answered before she could as I pulled her close to me.
'How's Jason?' Sera asked.
'Sleeping… again…' Gail chuckled. 'I swear that kid takes after Carter… each second he finds… he'll sleep…' She smiled again.
'…and you should too peanut…'
'I'm tired of sleeping dad…'
'I know… but you need to rest…' I said again. '…and at around 11.30am, John is coming by…'
'Why?'
'To talk to you…'
'Why?'
'Do you really need to ask?'
'Come on dad… you too would be frustrated…'
'…but I'd never call myself an invalid…' I replied as she looked down in defeat.
