Chapter 36 :
Maxon's POV:
"Umm, okay?" Denver says skeptically.
We walked to a small corner and standing facing each other.
"Let's talk about my wife, America," I say tilting my head and giving a small mischievous smirk.
"Look dude, no offense, but if you think you're a good husband you really should be taking care of her. I'm just saying, she's been through a lot of pain and I doubt you know how many resources we have."
"First of all, I'm the King and you may not call me 'dude'. Second, I know that America has been through a lot, but I think that both of us are doing a pretty good job on making this relationship work." I reply snarling at the end.
"Well let's have a little talk about all the bad things you've done to her. Just by being you and picking her for the Selection, you ruined a perfect life she could've had. By marrying her you put your burden on her. By making her mean something to you, you made her a target for people. You got her whipped. She was shot and stabbed and don't you ever want to die due to the amount of pain you've caused her. If I had such an amazing woman as my wife, I would do every single thing for her."
I shoved him against the wall and yelled, "Just shut your damn mouth."
He was strong, but not strong enough. My strength training had paid off. Afterall, I was supposed to train like a guard.
"There's one thing I didn't tell America. I did meet her. She was 14 and I was in Carolina for a year. I fell in love with her, but then I let her go. I still love her and my father said that on her 19th birthday when I'd meet her, I could marry her if I wanted to and if she wanted to as well. She probably doesn't even remember me. I was a friend of Aspen's. We talked, but I looked different and my name wasn't the same. She would never recognize me."
I didn't even know what to do. I wanted to literally throw this guy in the sea for all of this.
Suddenly we heard Americas voice and our heads whipped towards her.
"Hunter?"She asked in a whisper.
"Hey," he said.
Then she did something that I was probably jealous of. She gave him a hug.
I stumbled back and just stared daggers.
"Why didn't you tell me?" America asked.
"I didn't think you needed to know," he said back.
"You were my best friend, of course I need to know. How could I not suspect you were Hunter?" She exclaimed.
I couldn't even take watching their reunion. I went up the stairs to the deck. They had to have a stash of alcohol on these boats. At least one or two bottles. I looked inside the wooden boxes. Food, blankets, more blankets.
I finally sat down on a stool burying my face in my hands. Just as we turned a tiny bit on the seas I heard a bottle against wood. I sat up and looked at my seat. I realized that I could open it so I did.
Inside was of course a stash of alcohol. I grabbed a bottle and opened it.
This really is a great way to release my confusion.
America's POV:
I had walked downstairs when I heard yelling. It was of course, Maxon and Denver. I went upstairs just to close my eyes and think about everything. Sadly, these two were disturbing me. I watched as Maxon pinned Denver against the wall. I never had seen him so mad. I had a feeling Maxon was jealous. I didn't see why, but I knew he was.
I listened to everything they both were saying. I hated how Denver thought Maxon had ruined my life. My mouth dropped when he said he had met me. Aspen's friend? Carolina for a year?
Hunter.
Hunter Drades.
The boy who was my best friend for a year.
The boy who was like Aspen, except I didn't date him.
The boy who apparently liked me.
The boy who everybody forgot about.
The boy that disappeared.
"Hunter?" I squeaked out.
"Hey," he replied putting his hands in his pockets.
I couldn't help, but run to him.
He and Aspen were the best friends when they were 16. They were the same age and same caste. He only had his mother with him then. She was a sweet woman. Since Aspen and I were becoming good friends then, I had met him. Hunter and I became friends quicker and we were close.
"This is where you went?" I asked.
He nodded and I loved the feeling of being reunited.
Denver's POV (SURPRISE!):
Her fiery red her.
Her vibrant blue eyes.
Her soft touch.
Her melodic voice.
I had thought of America every single day and now she was here in my arms. Finally. It seems stupid, but I want America to love me. I love her. I know it's been nearly 5 years, but I never stopped loving her. I didn't even know how important she was until a year ago, but I fell in love with her. I just wanted what could've been a life.
"I didn't know how important you were before, you know. I fell in love with you, because I wanted to."
Then she stepped back.
"Look, what I want now was what we had then. A friendship. Nothing more. This is my life, and I couldn't have asked for another one. I don't know how in this world you know about me getting stabbed, and whipped, but I don't care those events. You have no idea how much I did to Maxon. I lied to him, lost his trust, and scarred him forever. We both fight for eachother…. That's how we work. He fights in a more reasonable, strategic way while I just jump at it." She said.
Stupid. I am stupid. I am stupid for thinking that this may have worked.
"I really have to go and talk to Maxon. You might not get this, but I hurt him again…. a lot." She turned around and I watched as she walked up the stairs.
America's POV:
"Maxon," I call.
"Maxon," I say again.
"Please, just let me talk to you."
His body came into view and his back was towards me.
He turned to me and I saw he had a nearly empty bottle of wine in one hand.
"Oh Maxon," I said my voice barely above a whisper.
"Leave me alone pretty girl," He said with a drunk voice.
"Maxon, please, just give me the bottle." I said inching closer to him.
"Why, you want some liquor?" He said smirking.
I could probably trick him into giving it to me so I answered, "Yes."
"To bad." He replied dumping the last bit in his mouth and then throwing the bottle in the sea.
"I'm sure there's more though," he said again heading over to a stool.
I beat his drunk body though and positioned myself in between him and the alcohol.
"Move it pretty girl," he said easily pushing me away.
Denver had just come on the deck and saw my situation with Maxon.
"What's up with him?" He asked.
"He's drunk. I have never, ever, seen him drunk. I don't think he's ever even been drunk. He never drinks too much. What have I done to him?" I say gasping.
"This your pretty girlfriend," Maxon teased while opening another bottle.
"Alright, let's take you downstairs," Denver said slowly approaching him.
The boat suddenly moved and Maxon fell back onto the floor. His head had hit some barrel and he had blacked out.
"Wow, I've never seen a King, get drunk."
"He's not even 21 and he rules a country, give him a break." I replied shooting him an evil glare.
"Let's get him downstairs," he suggests.
I nod and we start dragging him down the stairs.
Maxon POV:
I woke up on a bed/ cot with pillows on the ship.
Dang my head hurts.
Once my vision became clear I recognized America sitting next to me.
I immediately sat up, but a rush of pain from my head made me want to slide back down.
I felt a damp cloth fall from my forehead.
"Hey," America said weakly and nervously.
"Hi." I replied my eyes not leaving hers.
"How are you feeling?" She asked.
"Like crap, how's your day going?" I said as casually as I could.
"Pretty bad considering my husband got drunk and then hit his head, I found out a lot more than I wanted to, and I have no idea what to expect next."
"I think I'm sober now, so if you want to fall into my arms, I believe we'd both appreciate it."
I scooted over and patted the space beside me. I loved seeing her in casual clothes. She seemed so much more carefree. She was wearing a sweater and denim jeans with leather boots.
She crawled next to me and took my offer by letting me hold her.
"Sorry I got drunk, I shouldn't have added to the complicated day." I said.
"I shouldn't have been so overdramatic, and inconsiderate. If I were in your place I probably would've burned the ship by now," She replied giving a weak laugh."
I groaned as my head started pounding again. "Don't ever get drunk, America." I said.
"You being the wonderful husband you are, probably won't let me," she said.
"Unlike me, who's the cause of this mess," she muttered.
"Darling, if you didn't hear the long list on what a horrible husband I am, then you came in at the wrong time. He's right; I have been putting you through things that I shouldn't be putting you through."
"Don't say that, I put you through a lot of crap as well."
Denver came over and said, "We're arriving in 15. Get ready to leave love birds."
Then just like that, he left.
She snuggled in my arms and put her arm around my chest.
"What did I do when I was drunk?" I asked.
"Kept calling me pretty girl in a very annoying manner. Ummm called me Denver's girlfriend. Threw a bottle into the sea. Oh and crashed your head against wood."
I gave a deep chuckle.
"Well then pretty girl, I'm so sorry." I said.
"I'm sorry to, handsome boy." She said sadly.
BAMN I just created Denerica. Yep, I just made that exist. Sorry… not so sorry. It's funny because even America didn't know it might've happened. I don't know why I made Maxon drunk. I just wanted to see him crash his head tbh. I love that guy, but seriously, he was begging for it. Plus, what guy wouldn't be jealous? The point of this chapter, was kinda like a background check. There's so much more than a simple story told. So far the guerrilla has been quite… not too obvious. I think next chapter is going to show you what I mean about who they are. Anyways, review follow, and favorite!
