Maura had taken – on Jane's insistence – the three days her parents would be in town off. The Doctor had refused at first, telling her that she would be able to spend time with them after work. But then Jane had reasoned that if they caught a big case Maura would be working long hours. The honey blonde had admitted that Jane was right and had caved. She did tease the Detective mercilessly about the fact that she would be stuck with Dr. Pike for the oncoming days though. Jane had grumbled and moped around just to amuse Maura.
So that was how Maura found herself enjoying a late lunch with both her parents. They would be attending an opera later on that night. Jane had – not so subtly – declined going with them, giving them some excuse about spending time with each other. Maura however, knew the Red Sox would be playing that night. She couldn't be mad at the Detective however and would much rather spend the night with people who appreciated it as much as she did.
"Too bad Jane couldn't join us. I was hoping to spend some time with her as well. Get to know the woman who makes my daughter so happy." Maura blushed at her mother's words and felt herself smile involuntarily.
Her father agreed quickly, wiping at his lips with a napkin. "Yes, please ask her if she will be able to go out to dinner tomorrow tonight. Last night was delightful." Maura nodded, taking a bite of her salad.
Last night had been fun. Jane had quickly become at ease around her parents and was her known self, joking and sarcasm flowing freely. It had taken her parents a while to get used to it, not understanding when Jane was kidding at first, but they caught on quickly. Constance had even tried to match Jane several times. Maura was surprised to find that her mother was quite good at it.
"I'll ask her. But I won't be sure if she'll have time. If they're working on a case they need all hands and Jane is one of the very best. They won't be able to miss her." Constance nodded in understanding.
"Aren't you ever scared Maura? I mean, her profession isn't the safest. Aren't you ever afraid something will happen to her?" Maura frowned, thinking the question over.
Of course she was scared, she knew the dangers of being a Detective. But she also knew that Jane was capable of taking care of herself. If she checked both directions before crossing the street that is. Sighing softly, she looked up into the questioning eyes of her mother.
"There is always a part of me that's worried. But I'm not scared. I know that Jane is capable of taking care of herself. And Detective Frost and Sergeant Korsak will always look out for her. That makes me feel considerably better." She smiled at her parents, emitting a chuckle from her father.
"You two remind me of your mother and I. Young, in love. Just wait until you have your first argument. Then things will suddenly seem a lot less…" He looked at both the women looking at him and smiled, waving his hand in front of him. "Don't listen to this old man. But there is always making up after a fight." With a wink and smile his daughter's way, he turned back to his meal.
Maura's mouth literally fell open and she stared wide-eyed at her father.
"Father!" The man laughed at the look on his daughter's face, a twinkle of amusement apparent in his eyes. Constance rolled her eyes, taking a sip from her wine. She bit back a laugh herself.
Maura shook her head, not believing what she had just heard. She never would've thought something like that to fall from her father's lips. If Jane were here, she knew the other woman would agree with him, her laugh probably causing heads to turn. Smiling down at her plate, Maura was happy to be spending this time with her parents.
Jane was shouting at the screen when the Isles' came home from the opera. Constance and Gabriel shared a concerned look Maura's way, but the honey blonde just smiled and put her fingers to her lips. There was no way Jane heard them coming in with the way she was screaming.
The three snuck into the living room, watching Jane as she sat up right, a beer in her right hand and a slice of pizza in the other. Maura rolled her eyes. She was gone for one night and the Detective immediately fell back into her old habits. They stood there for a few more minutes, looking on as Jane once again screamed at the TV. Maura flinched as she saw some of the beer splash over the side of the bottle. Jane cursed as the liquid stained her pants. No more attention was paid to it however, when the Detective suddenly jumped up in joy.
"Yes! Suck on that Rangers! We own you!" Jane – thinking she was alone – did her victory routine. Which consisted of downing her beer, letting out a huge belch and then singing some kind of weird song and dancing to it.
Constance, Gabriel and Maura all looked on as Jane started dancing, singing along at the top of her lungs. Around halfway through her routine, she turned around and froze in her tracks. Maura was doing everything she could to keep from bursting out in laughter and Constance and Gabriel didn't seem to be able to hold back their laughter as well. Jane cleared her throat, smiled at the three of them, and acted like nothing happened. Except for the fact that it did and she totally humiliated herself. Clearing her throat, the Detective was beet red.
"H-Hey, when did you uhh, get home?" She tried to play it cool, tried to get back some of her dignity, but failed miserably. Maura couldn't contain herself any longer and started laughing uncontrollably, tears already rolling down her cheeks from trying to keep it in for so long.
Constance and Gabriel soon joined in, their laughter not so loud. Jane pouted. She thought she was alone. She hadn't even heard them come in. Some Detective she was. Sighing, she waited impatiently for the three of them to stop laughing. Constance and Gabriel stopped fairly quickly, but Maura couldn't seem to stop. Narrowing her eyes at her girlfriend, Jane tried to will her to stop with her eyes. Maura however, wasn't able to see properly with the tears streaming down her cheeks and was completely oblivious to Jane's glare. It was when Constance grabbed her arm and told her – with a smile on her face – to calm down that she looked at Jane.
Biting her lip, she walked over to her girlfriend, hiccupping as she got closer. Jane raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I'm glad I amuse you." Maura shook her head, feeling another wave of laughter try to burst out. She kept it inside though, reaching out to take Jane's hands. She noticed both were sticky.
"I'm sorry. But… you looked so cute and ridiculous!" Jane sighed, a smile tugging at her own lips.
"Well, it's something I do when I'm alone. I guess you can figure out why." The honey blonde nodded, leaning in to place a kiss on Jane's cheek, which she found also sticky.
Frowning as she pulled away, she gave Jane and her surroundings a one over. That's when she noticed two pizza boxes.
"Two?! You ordered two pizzas? Jane! I'm gone for one night." The Detective merely shrugged, not seeming at all guilty.
"So? I was hungry. You always say that I need to eat. Well, I ate!" Maura sighed exasperatedly, pulling completely away from Jane.
"I won't talk to you until you clean up this mess and yourself. You're all sticky." Turning up her nose when she noticed her own fingers sticking together she turned to the kitchen to wash her hands.
"Fine! But Jo helped! She has to clean up too." Jane looked like a small child as she pouted and glared at her dog. Maura rolled her eyes, wiping her hands on a clean towel.
"Jo wouldn't do anything you wouldn't let her do Jane. And I can't believe you're blaming this on a dog!" Jane gave her a dry look, before huffing and grabbing beer bottles and the pizza boxes.
As she passed Maura, she frowned at the other woman. "You're lucky the Sox won." Maura chose to keep her lips sealed and watched in satisfaction as Jane moved around the room, cleaning everything up.
Placing a big sticky kiss to Maura's cheek just before she left, Jane laughed as Maura let out a surprised yelp, her hand going up to her cheek to wipe, whatever it was, off. Glaring at Jane's retreating form, she waited for her girlfriend to be out of sight before turning to her parents.
"Well, as you can see, I'm dating a three year old." Gabriel laughed as Constance smiled at her daughter.
"I heard that!" Both women joined in.
Jane groaned as the blaring of the alarm clock awoke her peaceful slumber. Reaching out to shut the damn thing up, she slammed her hand down… hard. Smirking as the annoying sound stopped, she cracked open one eye to check the time.
"The fuck?"
"Language Jane." Jane turned to frown at the other woman in their bed.
"Did you set my alarm an hour earlier?" When all Maura did was give her an innocent look, Jane huffed.
"Why?"
"Because it will give us some time together. I've missed you these past two days." Maura reached out to run her hand through Jane's hair. Watching the Detective's eyes close, she smiled softly.
"Hmm, you're parents are leaving tonight Maur. We'll have plenty of time afterwards." Maura chuckled softly, turning to snuggle into Jane, throwing a leg over Jane's.
"Your parents can hear us y'know? These walls aren't that thick." Maura sighed, nuzzling Jane's hair.
"I'm not thinking about sex Jane." The Detective's eyes shot open.
"Then why the hell did you set my alarm a freakin' hour earlier?" Maura huffed, apparently annoyed.
"Because I also like to talk to you. You always think about sex." Jane chuckled, kissing the exposed flesh on Maura's neck.
"And you're surprised? Do you know what you do to me woman?" Maura laughed, pressing her lips to Jane's.
"Good."
Jane sighed deeply, before turning around on her back. Wrapping an arm around Maura, who snuggled even closer to her, she let her other arm go under her head.
"So what did you want to talk about? I'm awake now anyway." She felt Maura's breath on her chest and felt her voice vibrate through her whole body.
"How's work?" Jane scoffed.
"You did not wake me to talk about work. So pick a different subject." Maura chuckled softly, her arm squeezing Jane's waist for a moment.
"My parents like you." Jane smiled, an odd sense of relief filling her.
"Yeah? Even after last night?" Maura bit her lip, telling herself not to laugh.
"Yes, even after last night. They asked of you could join us tonight for dinner. Seeing as they will leave shortly after." Jane let her arm trail up and down Maura's back.
"I'll see if I can make it. How about I meet you at the restaurant?" Maura nodded, leaning up to press a kiss to Jane's chin.
"We have a reservation at seven. Let me know if you can make it?" The Detective nodded.
"Always." The two fell silent after that, content to just be in each other's arms.
The next hour seemed to fly by and before both of them knew it, Jane's alarm went off again. The Detective disentangled herself from Maura, stretching as she got up from the bed. Turning around, she pressed a kiss to the honey blonde's lips.
"Stay in bed. I'll be fine by myself." Maura seemed to hold an internal battle with herself, but at Jane's stern look, she nodded and snuggled back under the covers.
Jane shot her a pleased grin before disappearing into the bathroom. She sighed as she looked into the mirror. Last day without the honey blonde. Pike could finally go back to where he came from.
"Sorry I'm late." Jane was breathing hard as she came to a halt in front of their table. Giving Maura an apologetic smile, she leaned in to kiss her girlfriend hello. Nodding at both Constance and Gabriel, she quickly took a seat.
"Its fine Jane, we've only ordered our drinks. I ordered you a beer." Jane tried to catch her breath.
"Thanks babe. Traffic was a bust. I got this close to killing someone." Maura rolled her eyes, squeezing the thigh her hand had fallen on.
The waitress took this moment to come over with their drinks and Jane gulped half her beer down. Letting out a breath, she set her beer back down.
"What? No belch this time?" Jane turned her glaring eyes at the giggling woman besides her.
"You want me to?" Leaning in dangerously close, Jane opened her mouth. Maura's eyes widened, catching on to what Jane was doing.
"No! Don't you dare Jane Rizzoli!" Jane laughed, pulling back.
"So what did you do today? Visit a museum? Swim with sharks?" Jane smiled when she heard the sigh besides her. She couldn't help herself.
"We actually stayed in. Angela came over. You have a very lovely mother Jane. And the woman can cook! Her dishes are some of the best I've tasted." Jane blushed lightly, feeling proud of her mother.
"Yeah, she can definitely make a killer lasagna. You should ask for her recipe. She might just give it to you. She gave them to Maura. And when I ask she just gives me this look that I can't place. Apparently you Isles people have a way with her." Constance laughed heartedly.
"I'll be sure to ask."
The four of them made small talk until the waitress came back to order their meal. Ten minutes later, their food arrived and they tucked in. Jane suddenly remembered how hungry she actually was.
"Oh Jane. I told Maura that we will take a cab to the airport. And before you say anything, you won't be able to change our minds. We've taken up enough of your and Maura's time. You two deserve a night in." Jane couldn't argue with that and thanked them both.
They stepped out of the restaurant an hour later and made their way back to their home. Stepping in, Maura was quick to feed Bass, while Jane grabbed Jo's food. The dog and tortoise each made their way to their food, munching happily on their treats. Jane chuckled, ruffing Jo's fur before standing up and grabbing something to drink for everyone. They had some time before the cab would arrive. Sitting down after giving everyone their drinks she embraced Maura, pulling the other woman into her.
"I hope you two had a great time here in Boston. You should definitely come back soon. I know Maura would appreciate it." Maura nodded to emphasize Jane's point.
"Yes, I would love to have you two over some more."
"We love being here with you two. And we'll be sure to come back soon. We will check our schedules as soon as we get home." Maura smiled at her mother, hearing the genuineness behind those words.
"And we want to thank you both. You've welcomed us with open arms and you've even taken the time off work to spend it with us. Thank you for everything you've done." Jane nodded.
"No problem, you're Maura's parents. I'm just glad you had the chance to spend it together."
"Yes, I've missed you guys. And I'm sorry I haven't been calling as frequently as I did." Constance was quick to intervene, shaking her head.
"You have nothing to be sorry about. I completely get it." Maura shared a smile with her parents, feeling tears prick behind her eyes. She had no idea why, but the situation suddenly made her very emotional.
Wiping at her eyes, she chuckled. "Sorry, I don't know what's coming over me."
"Oh sweetie, come here." Jane watched in amazement as Constance stood up and embraced her daughter. She knew the two loved each other, but Constance had only shown such affection when they picked them up. So to see them holding onto each other now surprised her. In a good way.
Before they knew it, it was time to say goodbye. Jane finished loading the last suitcase into the trunk and stood back to see Maura being embraced by her father. Constance walked over to Jane, holding her arms out for the other woman. She knew that Jane wasn't one for hugs, but she was hoping the Detective would make an exception. And Jane did. Hesitantly, but she did.
"You're good for her Jane. And she's good for you. Please take care of her?" Jane nodded as they pulled back.
"I will, don't worry."
Gabriel was next, but luckily for Jane, the man didn't expect a hug. Shaking hands, he spoke up.
"You take care of my girl all right? I haven't seen her this happy in a long time."
"I will sir."
Jane stepped back with Maura as the two got into the cab. Waving them off, both of them waited until they were completely out of sight before walking inside. Closing the door, the two looked at each other for a moment.
"Glad they came?" Maura nodded, a smile on her face.
"Yes. I've missed them." Jane opened her mouth to retort, when there was a knock on the door. The Detective rolled her eyes, expecting her mother to stand on the other side.
But as she opened the door, she was met with a man she didn't recognize. It was only when Maura's voice rang out behind her that her blood ran cold.
"Garrett."
