But as she opened the door, she was met with a man she didn't recognize. It was only when Maura's voice rang out behind her that her blood ran cold.

"Garrett."

So this was Garrett? The man who Maura was married to. The man who she stayed with out of pity. Or because of her mother, same thing. The man who made her pregnant and didn't seem to hold any kind of emotion when his child died. The man, who looked nothing more than a sleaze bag. Looking at him now, Jane wondered what Maura had ever seen in the guy. His hair was slicked back, gel holding it in place. Jane scowled, had he used a whole tube of gel? He wore a business suit, one that probably cost more than what Jane made in a month. When her eyes traveled southwards, taking in his whole appearance, she noticed the bouquet of flowers in his hand. A flare of anger suddenly filled her and she turned her glaring eyes on his, daring him to say anything.

But of course he totally ignored the tall, dark, intimidating woman. His eyes were solely fixed on Maura and he had a smile plastered on his face. Jane almost gagged. He had his teeth bleached. They almost hurt her eyes. She felt Maura shift behind her, coming to stand next to her instead. Jane shot her a look, but Maura matched it, silently asking Jane to leave. But the Detective wasn't going anywhere and she made that known. Standing her ground, she turned her eyes back towards the pathetic man in front of her.

"Maura." Jane rolled her eyes. Even his voice sounded annoying. She felt Maura's hand come to rest on the small of her back, something Jane would do. Her intentions worked and Jane relaxed somewhat. But she didn't lessen the intensity of her gaze. He wasn't welcome and she was going to be damn sure he understood.

Holding out the flowers for Maura, Garrett waited for her to take them. But all she did was glance at them, before raising her eyebrow at him. Jane smirked. She was glad that Maura picked up on her traits. Especially in times like these. Garrett cleared his throat awkwardly, letting the roses drop to his side. His eyes then moved to Jane and he looked her up and down, a look of disdain clearly in his eyes.

"Who's this?" And it was clear in his voice as well. Maura stood her ground, her other hand coming to rest on Jane's arm. But she didn't have time to respond, Jane beat her to it.

"I'm none of your damn business and neither is Maura. She left your sorry ass, so I suggest you turn around and leave, before I make you." She put her hand on her hip, 'accidentally' making her gun visible for him. He merely glanced at him, before resting an unimpressed look on her.

"Like I'll listen to a cop. Shouldn't you be out writing parking tickets?" Jane growled low in her throat and missed the satisfied look in his eyes. She was doing exactly what he wanted her to do. But he hadn't counted on a simple look from Maura. The Detective immediately calmed down. She smirked when she saw the defeated look in his eyes.

"It's detective to you. Homicide. So if I were you I'd watch what's going to come out of that mouth of yours." He narrowed his eyes on her, before turning his gaze on Maura.

"Can we talk?" The honey blonde shook her head.

"No, I said what I needed to say through my lawyer. You're not a part of my life anymore Garrett, so please leave me alone." She was being nice, but Jane could hear the edge to her voice. The Doctor wouldn't need much more before she would lose her temper.

But when Garrett smirked and this sick making look entered his eyes, Jane got a sinking feeling. And it only got worse by his next words.

"I wouldn't be too sure about that Maura. After all, we're still married." It seemed as time slowed down around them. What did he just say? Jane felt Maura lean some of her weight on her, Garrett's words finally sinking in.

"W-What? That's not possible, I signed the divorce papers." Garrett shrugged, stuffing his free hand in his pocket.

"That's true. But I didn't sign mine. I was about too, but then I realized something. I started thinking about our relationship. And I figured out that you weren't happy. To be honest, it was all kind of obvious. The way you started to distance yourself from me, your behavior when I was around. Then I put two and two together and you know what I found out? It was your fault Maura. Your fault that our child died. Because that gave you the reason to divorce me, to leave. But it's not going to be so easy. Because I'm not going to let you go. You're mine. And you will always be."

Jane felt anger seep into every pore, envelop her heart, cloud her brain and before anyone realized what was happening, she had grabbed Garrett by his shirt. She pushed him against the wall roughly, smirking when she saw him flinch and let out a small 'oomph'. Bringing her face close to his, she gritted her teeth.

"If you ever and I mean ever, come near Maura or this place again, I will have you arrested. I will turn your life upside down to find anything, even an unpaid parking ticket and I will make your life a living hell. You are going to sign those papers, drop them off, leave and never look back again, because if I see your pathetic excuse for a face again, I won't be able to promise that I'll keep my hands to myself. Consider this your first and last warning Garrett." Her voice was drenched in venom and she saw his face change to fear. Letting him go with one last push, she stepped aside.

He straightened his suit, trying to regain some of his composure. Turning to look over his shoulder at Maura, he showed her his bleached teeth. Jane growled, balling her hands into fists. If he wasn't going to leave soon she was going to make good of her promise right now.

"Didn't think you'd be hanging out with dykes. Not exactly your type is she?" He held up his nose as he glanced at her and turned back to Maura.

The slap resounded loudly and even Jane was surprised. Garrett brought a hand up to his cheek, unbelief displayed on his face. Maura glared at him and Jane made a promise to herself never to piss Maura off. She was scary. No, she was frightening.

"Don't you ever say anything like that about my girlfriend. She is the sweetest, kindest and most caring person that I have ever met. You pale in comparison to her. I was nice to you, politely asking you to leave, but instead you tell me lies, accusing me of… of murdering our child." Maura was shaking with anger right now, tears threatening to fall.

"I never loved you Garrett, but don't you dare say something like this. This wasn't my fault and neither was it yours, but it did open my eyes. It made me see how small of a man you are. How little you cared about me and our marriage. If I find out that you didn't sign those papers Garrett, help me God." But Garrett remained undeterred.

Reaching into his jacket pocket, he pulled out a white envelope. Handing it to Maura, he waited for the honey blonde to grab it. When she didn't, he threw it at her feet, a scowl appearing on his face.

"Threatening me will only make matters worse for you Maura. I propose you call your lawyer. Not that he will be of much help. The only way for you to get rid of me is to go to court. Although I doubt the judge will find your grounds satisfying. Believe me when I say this Maura. You're not going to get rid of me." With one last look at both women, Garrett dropped the roses to the ground and stalked off, obviously very happy with what just went down.

When Jane was sure he was out of their sight, she turned back to Maura. The sight broke her heart. The honey blonde was holding onto the doorway for dear life, tears streaming freely down her cheeks. Jane was besides her in a flash, grabbing a hold of the broken woman. Rocking them back and forth, she slowly moved them inside far enough to close the door. The neighbors had already seen enough.

Once the door was closed, all dams seemed to break. Jane couldn't hold Maura upright and let them sink to the floor, gathering the woman into her arms. She whispered soothing words into Maura's ears, feeling the hatred she felt towards Garrett intensify tenfold. If she ever saw that son of a bitch again she would kill him.

Jane wasn't sure how much time passed, but Maura's tears slowly subsided. Maura shuddered now and then, letting out something between a sob and scream. Garrett's appearance had stirred up old feelings, feelings that she was finally trying to put behind her. Everything was going so well and then he shows up, completely messing up her life.

Lifting her head, Maura looked up at Jane. The Detective swallowed thickly when she saw the lost look in her girlfriend's eyes. Tucking a stray hair behind her ear, Jane pressed her lips against Maura's forehead.

"It's going to be okay Maur. We'll get through this." But one moment, she was holding Maura and the next the Doctor pushed away from her, standing up. She angrily looked down at the Detective, her make-up smeared.

"It-It's going to be o-o-okay?! It's not going to be okay Jane! Garrett's… He's ruining e-everything! You can't just say that it's going to be okay. Because it's not!"

Jane stood up, holding up her hands in surrender.

"Wow. Okay, sorry, that wasn't the right thing to say. What I meant was-"

"What you meant was that this isn't a big deal! You don't know Garrett, Jane, once he wants something he does everything he can to get it. This isn't any different!" Jane clenched her jaw. Getting angry at Maura wasn't going to make anything better.

"You're right, I don't know him. But that doesn't mean that I can't stand by your side and help you Maura. We're in this together." The two stared at each other for a moment.

"No, we're not." Jane just stood there, not knowing what to say. She watched Maura walk past her and further into their home. She snapped out of her haze when the door closed. Frowning, she turned around. She wasn't going to let it go this easily.

Following where Maura went, she entered the bathroom. The honey blonde was trying to clean her face, sniffling as a fresh wave of tears hit her. Jane sighed softly, her eyes studying the Doctor.

"What do you mean?" She hated the fact that her own voice cracked. She needed to be the strong one right now. Maura needed her to be strong. Or did she? If she really meant what she said, Jane wasn't so sure.

Maura didn't turn around, instead locking her eyes with Jane's in the mirror. Taking a breath, she glanced away before answering.

"Exactly what I said. I can't have you in the middle of this."

"And why not?" Later on, Jane would have wished she hadn't asked this.

"Because you'll only ruin it Jane." The Detective didn't have an immediate response. She just stared at the form of her girlfriend. Minutes passed before Jane spoke up. Maura was about ready to leave.

"I'll ruin it?" This time she didn't try to hide the emotions she was feeling.

Maura sighed, this time turning to face her. "You can't do what you just did Jane. You can't threaten him. He'll only use it against us, against me. This is going to be hard enough without you threatening him or hitting him every time you see him. I need to handle this professionally."

Jane's eyes nearly bulged out of her head at her words. "Professionally? Maura, we're talking about your life. Not some damn business proposal!" The Detective was beginning to lose her nerve. "And what is so bad about me trying to protect you huh? What do you want me to do? Just sit by and watch him ruin your life? I'm sorry if I can't do that Maura! I'm sorry that I love you!" Jane didn't wait for a response. She stormed out of the room and out of the house. She only momentarily stopped to grab the envelope that was still outside to throw it into the house.

Slamming the door shut, she got into her car and just drove. She didn't care if she was running away, all she cared about right now was getting away from there before she started saying things she didn't mean.

She drove around for what felt like hours before stopping in front of her old apartment. The place was still sealed off. Jane felt anger starting to rise steadily. Why the hell did he have to show up? Why did he have to ruin everything? Gritting her teeth, the Detective closed her eyes tightly, trying to will her anger gone.

Letting out a low groan, it turned into a scream and she started hitting her steering wheel. "Fucking Garrett! Fucking asshole!" Letting out one last scream, Jane let her head drop onto the steering wheel, finally letting the tears out. Why was everything suddenly going so wrong so fast?
