Jane found Maura in the kitchen sipping a cup of coffee the next morning. She was reading and re-reading the divorce papers Garrett had left after his visit. The Detective sighed softly, pouring herself a cup of coffee and kissing her girlfriend good morning.
"I forgot about that." Maura gave her a half smile, before turning her eyes back on the paper in front of her.
"I can't believe that this is actually happening." The Doctor put down the papers, running her hands over her face. "I talked to my lawyer." Jane raised her eyebrows, silently asking her to continue.
"He said it shouldn't be a problem to divorce him, but it's going to be a long and tiring trial. He also said that he couldn't hold your… outburst against us." The Detective nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over her.
"It doesn't matter how long this is going to take Maur. I'll be right by your side through this whole thing. And if he shows up here one more time I'll put a restraining order on him. He won't be able to get within a hundred feet of you." Maura smiled softly, nodding her head.
"Thank you." She let out another deep sigh, running her hand through her hair. Jane set down her mug, walked over to Maura and wrapped the other woman in her arms.
"I'm still mad at you though." Jane pulled back, surprise etched onto her features.
"W-what do you mean? You're still mad at me?" She earned herself a stern look, before she got an explanation.
"You told your mother Jane. While I remember you specifically telling me that you wouldn't tell anyone. You betrayed my trust Jane." The Detective closed her eyes momentarily, feeling Maura step out of her embrace.
"I'm sorry. But Ma won't tell anyone, you know that." She saw her girlfriend nod, but knew that this wasn't going to make her feel any better. Jane knew she broke her trust and she knew that she had to do whatever it took to win it back.
"It doesn't change the fact that you told her."
"So what was last night about then?" Jane locked eyes with Maura, waiting for an answer. But something in Maura's told her that the honey blonde herself didn't even know it. And as she sighed and turned away, Jane got her answer.
"So what? You just wanted a good fuck? Huh, to make yourself feel better?" Jane couldn't keep the bitterness out of her voice. Couldn't keep the anger from seeping in. But Maura matched it word for word.
"And wasn't that the same exact reason you told Angela? To make yourself feel better?! So I'm sorry for doing the same thing Jane!" The Detective clenched her teeth. How did they always go back to fighting? She shook her head, a bitter laugh escaping her lips.
"No! I told her because I needed advice. And she gave it to me. That's the only reason I told her." Their eyes locked in an intense gaze. Both felt the tension hang thickly around them.
"I'm going to take a shower." Maura briskly walked past Jane, not sparing the Detective a second glance. Jane let out a long groan burying her face in her hands. This was not how she expected the morning to go.
Angela was startled out of reading her morning paper when there was a knock on the door. Setting down the paper and her tea, she walked over to the door to open it, finding her daughter on the other side.
"Jane. What are you doing here?" The Detective sighed.
"Can I come in?" Angela nodded, stepping aside to let Jane walk into her home. Shutting the door behind her, the older woman observed her daughter. She could immediately tell something was wrong by the way Jane was wringing her hands together. It was a habit she had picked up when she was younger. And it didn't take a genius to find out that something had happened with Maura.
"Do you want some tea?" Jane nodded numbly, sitting down on the couch. She let her head drop against the back of it. She looked up when Angela sat down next to her, handing her her tea.
"So what happened?" Jane wasn't surprised when Angela cut right to the chase.
She looked down at her tea, tracing the rim of the mug with her finger. Biting her lip, she turned to look at her mother.
"She's mad because I told you." Angela's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
"What do you mean she's mad at you because you told me?" Jane sighed, partly in annoyance and partly because she didn't want to have this conversation at all.
"I told her when she told me that I wouldn't tell anyone. And now that I told you… she said I betrayed her trust. She said that the only reason that I told you was to make me feel better about myself. I just don't understand why she would even think that! I just… god, sometimes she makes me so angry!" Angela took a small sip of her tea, licking her lips.
"You can't blame her for saying this Janie. She's right. You betrayed her trust. And you have to work to earn it back." Jane glared at her mother, setting down her tea.
"So you're on her side? You're my mom for crying out loud! Why can't you just pick my side for once?!" Jane shot off the couch, heading for the door. Angela's voice made her stop, but she didn't turn around.
"You're right, I'm sorry. It's just… I hate to see you hurting Jane. But you can't expect me to turn my back on Maura. Not after everything she has done for me. I won't do it. I care about the both of you. But after hearing what that poor woman went through…" Angela sighed. "I hate to see her hurting as much as I hate to see you hurting." She waited for Jane to turn around, waited for her to tell her that she was right, but it didn't happen. Instead, Jane walked out, leaving her mother staring at the closed door.
Jane reentered her house, catching Maura just as she walked back into the living room. The honey blonde looked at her for a moment, before sitting down on the couch, turning the TV on. The Detective watched as Maura flicked through the channels, eventually stopping on a documentary of some kind. Sighing softly, she trudged towards the bathroom. She might as well take a shower herself.
Jane and Maura spend the whole day ignoring each other. When one was in the living room, the other stayed in the bedroom, when one was needed to use the bathroom, the other stayed as far away as possible. To be honest, Maura was surprised Jane hadn't just left her. She was good at that. When night fell, the Doctor expected Jane to get the couch ready to sleep on, but instead, she found her already in bed, getting comfortable.
Pursing her lips, she walked over to the closet to grab some blankets. Jane followed her with her eyes and – once she figured out what she was doing – stopped her.
"You're not sleeping on the couch Maura." The honey blonde turned to look at Jane, stilling her movements.
"I don't give a damn that we're fighting. We're still sleeping in the same bed." She watched with baited breath for Maura to close the drawer and get into bed. And to her own relief, she did.
An awkward silence filled the room and Jane laced her hands together and laid them on her stomach. She wanted to say something, anything, but she just didn't know what. And when Maura turned her back to her, she gave up. Sighing deeply, she turned on her side, facing away from Maura. She just hoped that sleep would eventually come over her.
But it didn't. An hour later and she was still fast awake. Fluffing her pillow in hope that it would make her more comfortable she turned to face Maura. The honey blonde was still facing away from her and Jane frowned. In fact, she hadn't felt her turn around. And even though Maura wasn't a restless sleeper, she did move around in her sleep. Watching Maura's back intently, she found that the honey blonde was awake.
"Maura?" No answer.
"Maura, I know you're awake. You're breathing is uneven." A sigh got her attention and she watched as Maura turned to face her.
Even in the dark, she saw that her girlfriend had been crying. A pang of guilt made her heart skip a beat and she shuffled closer. They were still within a safe distance, but if Jane reached out, she could touch Maura. The honey blonde watched her warily, not sure what Jane was about to do. What she did see, was the love in the Detective's eyes. It only made her feel worse. She didn't want to lash out at Jane. She didn't want to be mad at her. But she did feel betrayed. She couldn't believe that Jane would just up and tell her mother something like this. And even though she knew that the older woman wouldn't tell anyone, she still waited for the bomb to drop and everyone to find out about what she went through.
"I love you." Jane's voice cut through her thoughts and it took her a moment to figure out exactly what she said. When she did, she broke down.
She didn't remember what happened next, it was all a blur. One moment she was bawling her eyes out and the next Jane had her wrapped up in her arms. She didn't remember falling asleep, but she awoke in the arms of her lover the next morning. Jane was already awake, tracing patterns on Maura's exposed arm. The honey blonde breathed in deeply, looking up into concerned brown eyes.
"Hey." She could hear the hesitancy in Jane's voice and she knew that it was her fault. The Detective was probably waiting for her to burst again and scream at her. She let her head drop back on Jane's chest.
"Hi." It was silent around them, but the heaviness of last night had decreased. It was still awkward and both were waiting for the other to make the first move and say something. Maura eventually did.
"I'm sorry about last night." She felt Jane squeeze her and a sense of familiarity came over her. An odd sense of comfort.
"You don't have to be sorry. I can only guess how hard this must be on you. And I'm sorry for being an insensitive jerk and not thinking about your feelings." Maura shook her head, starting to trace her own patterns underneath Jane's tank. She felt the Detective's heart skip a beat and her breath hitch. She smiled.
"You weren't an insensitive jerk Jane. I just… it wouldn't have mattered what you would've said or done. Nothing would've been the right thing. I would've gotten angry about anything."
"Yeah. But still. You were right about the fact that I betrayed your trust. And I plan to earn it back. I just have to figure out how." Maura stopped her ministrations to prop herself up. She wanted to properly look at Jane.
"You didn't betray my trust Jane. I never should've asked you to keep this to yourself. It isn't healthy to have to deal with something like this on your own. So you have nothing to make up for. If anyone is in the wrong it's-"
"Garrett, yeah I agree." They shared a small smile and Jane leaned in to press a soft kiss to Maura's lips. She was happy when Maura didn't pull away. Instead, the honey blonde pressed her body flush against Jane's and let her tongue enter the Detective's mouth. They moaned at the contact, reluctantly pulling away a moment later.
"Can we please stop fighting?" Jane nodded in agreement, caressing Maura's cheek,
"I'm all for that." The Doctor smiled, her lips touching Jane's.
"Yesterday was awful. I don't want to spend another day not talking to you." Maura settled herself back against Jane, her head dropping into its previous spot on Jane's chest.
"I know! I kept wanting to tell you things that popped up into my head, but then I remembered that we weren't talking and I… I don't care if we hate each other's guts Maura, but we keep talking all right?" She felt her throat constrict, a wave of emotion rushing through her.
"I promise." The whisper that filled Jane's ears caused the tears that she held back for so long to finally fall. This time it was Maura that held her, being her rock.
