This was supposed to come out yesterday, but here's the new chapter.
Chapter 12 - Enforcing Justice; Part 3
It was night inside the Emiya residence.
"..."
"..."
Saitama and Tohsaka sat on the living room table, alongside with the enforcer seated right across from them. Not a single one of them spoke, staring at each other without a single emotion being revealed on their faces—or at least, on Saitama and the enforcer's part, as Tohsaka had a slight sheen of cold sweat on her face.
Taiga came over from the kitchen, holding cups of tea that she set down on the table.
"...Please, have some tea." she said.
The enforcer nodded her head and took the offered tea. "Thank you."
Taiga gave the enforcer a fixed smile, before moving to sit right beside Saitama and Tohsaka.
Silence descended once again, empty air only being filled by the sound of the TV.
"..."
"..."
Taiga cleared her throat.
"U-Um, Ms McRemitz, was it?" she started, making the enforcer look at her. "That name… you must be from Europe, right? How are you finding your stay here in Fuyuki?"
The enforcer sipped the tea in her hands.
"It's been nice." she said simply.
When nothing more was said, Taiga gave her a nervous nod.
"I-I see."
Again, silence.
Meanwhile, Tohsaka discreetly gave a look at Taiga. "What the hell are you doing!?" she whisper-shouted in a low enough volume that their guest wouldn't hear, while also bringing up an anti-eavesdropping bounded field between the two of them she set ever since they sat down at the table.
Taiga noticed this and leveled her with an angry look on her own. "I don't know! You're the one who brought a damn enforcer here!" she said back, mirroring the girl's volume. "What do you want us to do, just keep quiet and don't talk to her!?"
"I'm telling you to act respectable at least! She's going to report to her boss, so don't show her any weaknesses!" Tohsaka said hotly.
"I'm dressed like a damn slob! If you want to make a good impression, then you shouldn't have brought her here!" she retorted, making the girl wince. "And by the way, you still haven't explained why there's an enforcer with you! Or why you brought her here in the first place! Aren't you the one that said that these people are supposed to be really dangerous!?"
Tohsaka looked away. "I panicked okay! I got surprised when it turned out that the ones that defeated the sect were the enforcers, then they suddenly wanted to ask me questions!"
Taiga narrowed her eyes. "Questions?"
"They discovered that the monsters all came from here. And no, I don't blame you for that." she said, forestalling Taiga when she cursed. "They must have realized some things when they discovered the Muscle monster from the sect."
"That still doesn't make it any better." Taiga muttered. Then, she realized something, and she leaned in to Tohsaka. "...Do they know about Saitama?"
Tohsaka was silent, glancing her head to the side to look at the enforcer, who started watching the TV while they were busy talking discreetly. The enforcer must have undoubtedly noticed the boundary field but didn't say anything about it, so she seemed to respect their privacy. There wasn't a single indication that she was listening at all, nor does she sense anything that might show that she was eavesdropping.
Tohsaka shook her head. "No, they don't. I managed to divert their attempts of gaining information by saying to move the questioning tomorrow. So they're in the dark for now."
Taiga breathed a sigh of relief. "I see.. That's good."
"Trust me, the last thing I want him getting is a sealing designation." Tohsaka agreed. "But he should be able to hide it so long as he doesn't exhibit his strength too much. They might just assume its reinforcement or something."
The woman nodded her head. "So you're going to meet up with the rest of the enforcers and get questioned tomorrow? What are you going to do about that, then?"
That made Tohsaka sigh. "I don't know, that's what's on my mind this whole time. I have half the mind to just act clueless and trust my luck to see if they buy the act, but I know better than to just leave things to fate like that." she admitted.
"So you're going to tell them the truth? That you're the one who got all those monsters?"
"Somewhat." Tohsaka answered. "I'm going to spin it as the city being some sort of magical hotspot for phantasmal creatures because of the dense mana present, and that I encounter more phantasmal creatures simply because there is less magi in Japan compared to the West that hunt them down for materials. They wouldn't contest it, especially when they know what's going on here."
"And what is that?" Taiga asked with narrowed eyes.
"Something called a Holy Grail War." she revealed. "It said something about that in my father's notes—it's a complicated ritual, but the important part is that the amount of mana is enough to cause an actual miracle." she paused. "Or something along those lines anyway. Apparently, it's a big enough ritual that even the Director of the Clock Tower had something of a hand in. They chose Fuyuki as the place for it."
"A ritual like that is in the city?" Taiga said incredulously. "Are you sure that's not the real reason for the monsters?"
"Maybe, but if that was the case then the monsters should've started earlier and not just a few years ago. Especially since the ritual went back around the 1700s. Nevertheless, I think it's a good excuse to use in this situation." Tohsaka frowned. "But… I'll never really know what might happen when dealing with other magi. Things might get awry."
Taiga looked at her, before rolling her eyes. "Just take Saitama with you, dumbass."
Tohsaka blinked. "What? But—"
"I know I'm always harping on making him safe." she looked at Saitama, who was watching the TV along with the enforcer, face blank with a finger up his nose. "But even if I worry… I acknowledge the fact that he's strong. I have faith that it'll take nothing less than a god to bring him down. Especially with that dumb dream of his." her eyes glanced at her. "And I know you'll make sure that those magi won't know a single thing about Saitama, right?"
Tohsaka stared at the woman, her thoughts about what she said unclear. Then, she nodded.
"Alright, I'll take him." she agreed. "...And I suppose I should talk to him about it. Just to let him know what he'll do there." with that, she stood up from her seat, gaining the curious attention of Saitama and the enforcer. "Try to distract the enforcer while I talk to him."
Taiga froze. "Eh? W-Wait—"
The girl immediately made Saitama get up, who looked at her quizzically. "Tohsaka? What's up?"
"Let's just go somewhere else, Emiya-kun. We have something to talk about."
With that, Tohsaka dragged the confused Saitama out.
There was a slight silence as the two left, and Taiga nervously turned to the enforcer who was looking at the door curiously. The Fujimura heiress glanced down to see that the tea the enforcer had was already empty.
Then, out of nervousness of the situation, she found herself speaking automatically.
"So… do you drink beer?"
Saitama gave Tohsaka a puzzled expression as the girl suddenly brought him to one of the rooms in the house without even a single explanation on her part.
Then again, I wasn't able to follow what was going on ever since those weird guys showed up earlier… he mused. Something about en- enforcer, was it?
"So, what's this about?" he asked the girl.
"Hold on, Emiya-kun. Let me finish making this boundary field first." she did some things on the ground, before standing up. "...Alright, it's done."
The girl turned to him and crossed her arms.
"Emiya-kun, listen up carefully." she started. "We're here to talk about what we're going to do tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? Ah, you mean the questioning thing." he scratched his head. "I don't really understand much of what's going on, honestly. You seem to know these guys… are they other magicians like you are? Like the ones we fought a few days ago?"
"Magi, Emiya-kun. They're called magi." the girl said exasperatedly. "But yes, they are. What's more, those people are a special kind of magi—they are called enforcers. You can think of them as strong magi who are more focused on combat instead of research."
"And tomorrow, we'll be going to them so they can ask me questions pertaining the monsters here in Fuyuki."
He raised a brow at that. "Why? What's wrong with the monsters?"
"That's the thing. You see, the 'monsters' here in Fuyuki are unique. Normally they're not that way." Tohsaka started to explain, putting a finger up in a teaching pose. "You see, Emiya-kun, what most people would consider as monsters are called phantasmal creatures. They're things like werewolves, youkai, or maybe even dragons. They're usually strange beasts that are spoken of in legends without any clear origin of where they came from."
"But here in Fuyuki, it's somehow different." she continued. "You should've seen it yourself, haven't you? How strange some of those monsters were? They're not supposed to be like that. It's not normal for phantasmal beasts to appear out of nowhere—and if what those monsters had said were to be believed—then they shouldn't appear because of stupid reasons either!" the girl started pacing around. "Phantasmal creatures are supposed to be beasts that don't fit in the ecological system and are unachievable through natural selection, and they also don't fit in any of the classifications of phantasmal creatures! And more than that, they keep appearing at an incredible rate!"
She turned to him with an intense look. "That's what the magi are trying to find out, and if they find out anything about it, then they'll take special attention to this place and it might be bad. Do you understand, Emiya-kun?"
Saitama stared at her with a serious expression.
"Yeah." he intoned pensively with a nod. "So the gist is… you're saying that they're weird, right?"
Tohsaka's eyebrow twitched for some reason.
Then she sighed in resignation. "...Yes. Yes, that's correct."
"So what are we going to do?" he asked, face relaxing again.
"Well for starters, you're going to leave everything to me. That means when we get there, you don't need to speak to anyone and only do so when you're addressed." the girl instructed. "Your official status in their eyes is that of an underling or something along those lines, so it wouldn't be too out of place if you just stand there beside me. Remember what I said to you when we first discussed our contract with one another?"
At that, Saitama nodded, and Tohsaka continued. "You need to be careful, because if those magi realize just how strong you are, then they're going to be curious about you. That's the worst case scenario that we'd like to avoid as much as possible."
He looked at her in confusion at that. Huh? But wait, if that was that case…
"Then, wouldn't it be really bad if we go there?"
"It might be, but then there's also a good chance that things might get awry." the girl admitted, before she looked him straight in the eye with a determined expression. "I know it's a huge risk on your part, but I'm asking you to have faith in me—I'm going to make do with my end of our contract and will be taking the reins on this one. I'll do my best not to let them find out, Emiya-kun."
Saitama shook his head. "I'm not really concerned about that. I trust you, Tohsaka."
That made the girl pause for some reason, before she huffed and turned to the side, red dusting her cheeks. "W-Well, I suppose it's natural that you do! An esteemed magus like me wouldn't go back on her word, after all!"
There was a slight awkward pause, and the girl coughed.
"A-Anyway, in the meanwhile, you should avoid saying anything incriminating to the enforcer with us. She'll undoubtedly report everything she sees to the senior enforcer, so don't get too careless for now." she said sternly. "That includes showing her your strength. She might think it's strange when you keep doing your training without casting a reinforcement spell."
Saitama nodded at that. "Alright."
With that, Tohsaka relaxed. "And I guess that's all I really wanted to tell you. For now I think I'll… no, it would be bad if I head home. She'll just follow me." she frowned. Then, she turned her head to him. "Is it alright if I stay here for the night?"
He shrugged at that. "Eh, it's fine. We have plenty of room here anyways."
"Thanks. For now, we should rest so that we'll be in top shape for tomorrow. It's a good thing that it's a weekend too." she glanced to the side. "...We should be going back for now. I dread what happened to Fujimura-sensei while she was left there."
With that, the two left the room and walked back to where Taiga was at.
For a moment, nothing out of the ordinary happened and the two walked in silence…
Bang!
Until a loud noise from the living room echoed out of the hallway, making Saitama and Tohsaka pause in their tracks.
What was that noise!?
The two looked at each other in alarm, before quickly barreling it on the hallway and arriving just in front of the living room. Sliding the door open, they tensed up, readying for an attack—!
"BWAHAHA! Yeah, chug chug! I knew that you enforcers must be made of strong stuff! Keep it coming, keep it coming!"
—Until they saw the laughing visage of a drunk Taiga, who was hitting the table with her hand while holding a can of beer with another. Right across her was the enforcer, who also had a can of beer with her, raised up her mouth and chugged the whole thing down.
The enforcer exhaled as she managed to drink the whole can in one go, setting down the empty can of beer down on the table with her usual cool and professional expression. However, if one were to look closely they would see a tinge of pride in her expression as well.
"Yeah! That was great!" Taiga cheered, then followed by chugging her beer as well. Then her eyes glanced to the side and seemingly noticed Saitama and Tohsaka. "Oh, hey! You guys are back! Everything done?"
Both of them looked at her incomprehensibly.
"What?" Tohsaka uttered, unable to register what was happening in front of her. "Are you drunk? Why are you drinking with that enforcer?"
"Huh!? I'm not drunk at all! And don't talk to Bazett that way, she's a nice girl that just got dealt with a bad hand, like me!" she turned to the enforcer with a tipsy smile. "Isn't that right, Bazett~?"
The enforcer coughed. "She offered to drink with me and I accepted. One thing led to another… and well, I believe we consumed too much." she said sheepishly. "I apologize, I wasn't able to stop her."
Saitama blinked, then eyed the enforcer closely.
There was a trace of red on her cheeks.
W-Wait, is she drunk as well?
"Don't be like that, Bazett! It's okay to cut yourself some slack every once in a while—I mean, I totally get it, you know? But if you continue you'll just end up with lots of stress and lose some hair over it!" she took a big gulp of her beer before pointing at the girl. "A friend of mine was like that. He used an excuse that he was going to be a monk anyway, so he'd gone and shaved his head short because of it—but still!"
Tohsaka stared at the two drunken adults, who started bonding like lifelong friends, for a long moment.
"Emiya-kun, you deal with this." she suddenly said in a bland tone. "I'll go and call home for a while."
That made Saitama remove his gaze from the scene to look at the girl.
"Huh? H-Hold on, what the hell am I supposed to do here!?" Saitama said incredulously. "Oi, Tohsaka!" he called, hand outstretched as the girl walked away.
Taiga watched as the girl went. "What's her problem?" she asked, tilting her head. Then a moment later she shook it instead and raised up her can of beer. "Well, whatever! The night is still getting started, so let's drink some more! Come and join us here Saitama!"
The enforcer didn't say anything. However, Saitama couldn't help but notice that the woman was already holding another can of beer in her hands, sipping it with moderation.
"Saitama, come on!"
"...Alright."
Saitama sighed, already steeling himself to deal with Taiga's antics.
It's not like he's not used to this, after all.
"Okay, so I'll be leading you to the guest rooms! Tohsaka, come with me."
"No, you're coming with me, you drunk woman." Tohsaka deadpanned as she carried the red-faced and tipsy Taiga with a hand slung around her shoulder. "Seriously, just how much did you drink? You stink of alcohol!" she said, recoiling away from her face.
"Don't call a lady stinky! That's rude!"
"Yeah, yeah. Sure." Tohsaka turned to Saitama, who gave her an apologetic expression. "I suppose you can also help our guest get to her room as well?"
Saitama nodded at that, then turned to look at the enforcer who was slightly red-faced but not fully drunk, judging that she was able to stand on her two feet. "Yeah, I can do that."
"Thank you, I am in your care." she said.
"Yeah, I'll just go ahead and get this woman to bed." she said, before pausing. "Where are the guest rooms, by the way?"
"We have another spare one if you turn left in the hallway. That's where Taiga usually sleeps if she stays overnight. There's also an empty room beside it that you can sleep in too." Saitama told her.
The girl nodded at that, then left with Taiga in tow. Saitama stared at them for a moment, before he turned to the enforcer. "Alright, follow me."
Saitama walked silently to a different part of the compound that had spare rooms, with this one near his own room. It was completely silent as they walked, and he could notice that the woman was looking around the place curiously, with her eyes lingering most on the dojo across the compound.
Then, they arrived at the spare room.
"Here we are. If you need anything, don't be afraid to wake me up. My room is right beside yours." he said, gesturing to the sliding door at the side. "Oh, and the restroom's on the hallway to the left if you need it."
The woman nodded in appreciation. "Thank you."
"Just being polite, you're a guest after all." Saitama said, before scratching his head. "Sorry again for Taiga. I swear she's much more behaved than how she acted earlier."
She smiled softly at that. "...I have no problem with it. She seems to be a good and genuine person. Even if a bit rowdy." the woman paused, before speaking again. "Do you mind if I ask you a question?"
"What is it?"
Her eyes looked straight at his, and the tipsiness seemed to disappear as she stood straight, with her expression turning back into the cold one that he recognized that she wore when they had appeared in the warehouse.
For a second, Tohsaka's warning of not providing her any information appeared in his head.
"You are a civilian." she stated. "From what I've seen in this place and the way you and your sister act, the both of you are civilians. You don't hold the mindset to become a proper magi, nor does it look like you exhibit the will to become one."
"So why does the Second Owner involve you in her matters? Why go with her, especially when dealing with that sect?" she asked. "Not unless it wasn't voluntary?"
Saitama blinked at that.
"...Huh, I thought you'd ask something else." he shook his head. "Anyway, I'm not really forced or anything…" he trailed off trying to think of how to articulate the words that describe their situation. "Hmm, it's really complicated and hard to explain, but I guess the gist of it is that I'd like to help her."
Her eyes narrowed minutely at that. "Help? You mean you partake in her experiments?"
Saitama looked at her in confusion. "What? No, what I meant is that Tohsaka is a good person, and I just wanted to help her while she does things to help the city. That's all there is."
The enforcer didn't speak after he said his piece, face unreadable as she just stared at him. Saitama has no clue what is going on in her mind, so he just mentally shrugged.
"Anyway, I'm going to sleep now. The futon is inside the shelf, so just bring it out." he gave her a nod and turned around. "Good night."
And so, Saitama went to his room to go and sleep, leaving the enforcer alone in the hallway.
…
…
…If Saitama were to be present however, he would be able to witness the confused face that the enforcer was showing.
"A magus, being concerned for civilians…? One that also involves themselves in their city?" Bazett muttered incredulously. "That's not… how a magus works."
A few moments later, the enforcer shook her head, before moving on to sleep herself.
There was still much to be done tomorrow, after all.
Bazett and Taiga… who knew that they'd click together that way? They're similarly aged, and both are in essence lonely young women trying to get by in the moonlit world. Expect to see their dynamic grow.
I know that Bazett is a rational and mercenary individual, especially in the Fate/kaleid spin-off, but in Fate she is stated to possess a strong sense of justice which causes her to get irked seeing a magus like Tohsaka involving a civilian in their matters, which is what we see in the last scene. And of course, being more used to Clock Tower magi, she'd be confused about the existence of magi actually giving a shit about what they deemed as lessers.
The next chapter is going to be the questioning headed by the officers. It's going to be a different kind of fight—one that is not fought with fists, but rather with politics. It's going to be Tohsaka's time to shine.
Anyway, that's all. Please leave a review if you have any criticisms. I hope you enjoyed reading!
