"Okay, library. Where do you hide your secrets…" said Sirius mystically.
"Oh, I don't know, maybe in the Restricted section," said James, rolling his eyes.
"Or maybe in its- GRAVEYARD!" shouted Sirius in a spooky tone. It was Jazz's turn to roll her eyes.
"Sure, Sirius. Whatever you say." Sirius harrumphed, and crossed his arms over his chest.
"It is possible," he started.
"No, it's not," cut in Remus. "And I suggest we get going before we're late for dinner, or caught."
"Right you are," said Sirius joyfully. Remus raised his eyebrows, stifling a grin.
"Um, so where should we look?" asked Jazz cautiously.
"Probably in the Origin of Hogwarts section," said Remus. "Obviously." His friends turned to face him.
"There's an Origin of Hogwarts section!" said James loudly, causing Remus to shush him. "Can you believe that there is an Origin of Hogwarts section?! An Origin or Hogwarts-" He stopped abruptly. "Wait. What does origin mean?" Remus rolled his eyes.
"Structure."
"What does structure mean?" Remus groaned.
"James, how do you not know what structure means?" James shrugged. "Oh Merlin. Um…okay, never mind. Just know that it'll probably help us find the kitchens." James shrugged again, but nodded.
"Okay, whatever."
"Origin of Hogwarts," said Jazz in a monotone. Remus groaned again.
"Yes, Jazz, that's what we are looking for. Do you need me to explain it to you too?" Jazz shot him a look, and shook her head.
"No, you wanker, I mean I found a book called, 'The Origin of Hogwarts'."
"Oh," said Remus, looking at the dusty book in Jazz's hand. "That was easy."
"Too easy," agreed Peter.
"Well? Open it!" urged James. Sirius watched, with eager and wide eyes. Jazz slowly lifted the cover of the book.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" A shrill, piercing scream filled the air. Jazz shut the book quickly, and looked up at her friends; frightened. The sound of footsteps approached the children's ears. James quickly and sloppily tossed the Cloak over them. and the kids slowly began backing up; one step at a time.
"Who's there?" said a voice. Jazz cringed. She recognized that scraggly hair. It was none other than the nosy caretaker, Argus Filch. He cackled weakly, but the effect was shattered when he broke into a coughing fit. Jazz stifled a laugh.
"Don't hide, students, Mrs. Norris shall find you," he threatened, gesturing towards his old cat, who was staring at the exact spot that the kids were hidden.
"Do you think that cat can see through the Cloak?" muttered James out of the corner of his mouth. Sirius shrugged slightly.
"Must be Peeves, that lot messing with me again," said Filch angrily. "I'll get him, one of these days, I will." Jazz let out a breath she didn't know she was holding.
"That was a really close call," she whispered, not wanting to call the attention of Filch. Or his creepy cat.
"Well, at least it's dinner time. I could really use the food…" said Remus longingly.
"We will continue our mission later," decided James, in a professional voice. Peter sniggered.
"What? I'm friends with giver-uppers?" cried Sirius in mock outrage.
"Cheese," said Peter. Jazz rolled her eyes.
"Sirius, we're not giving up. Eventually we'll find the kitchens." Sirius crossed his arms over his chest, and harrumphed.
"But for now, how about we go to dinner? And eat? Because I don't know about you boys, but I'm absolutely starving." Sirius perked up at the word 'eat', and nodded.
"Can't argue with that," he said, quick to agree.
"Well then, why are we still here?" said Remus. "Let's go, I'm hungry!"
"Me too!" piped Peter.
"Just remember to be careful, Filch is probably on the lookout for troublemakers or whatever," warned James cautiously. The kids nodded, and trooped out, struggling to balance the cloak on them evenly.
As they reached the Great Hall, most people were already seated. Remus inhaled the scent deeply, savoring the aroma of the food. The Marauders walked in, and took seats across from Lily, Alice, and Cherry. Lily raised her eyebrow, silently questioning Jazz why they showed up later then the rest of the Gryffindor house. Jazz shrugged and shook her head, mouthing to Lily that she'd tell her later. Lily looked like she wanted to continue on the topic, but she ignored it. Dumbledore tapped his spoon to his glass, and stood up, drawing all the attention in the room to him.
"Excuse me, an announcement is in order!" he said.
"Well, obviously," snorted James. "Why else would he have done that? To say that he had to hit the loo?" James laughed at his own joke. Sirius and Peter chuckled with him, while Jazz and Remus opted to remain silent, as to not inflate James's ego even more.
"Many of our first years have been wondering as to why they haven't received a single potions class this year, and as to why all the other years have," he said, voice crystal clear. Lily frowned.
"Potions? That sounds fun, I want to do that!"
James ruffled his hair lazily. "Eh, whatever. Just one more class for me to worry about."
Many of the second and third years looked furious that the first years didn't have to take the dreaded class.
"And the reason for all of the substitutes and simply not another teacher, is that our usual potions professor had to take a personal break."
"Rubbish!" yelled the Prewett twins, banging their fists on the table, causing the Great Hall to erupt into an uproar. The first years wore baffled expressions,as the older children caused a riot.
"Enough!" shouted Dumbledore, voice ringing loudly throughout the room. SIlence enveloped the room; the headmaster rarely yelled. The twinkle in the old man's eye slowly faded away. "What you must understand is that when family is lost, time is the only thing that will heal. Times are hard for Professor Slughorn and he is not to be blamed." No one spoke, and the only sound was of Hagrid's heavy breathing.
"Sorry," a second year squeaked timidly. "We didn't know." Professor Dumbledore's face softened as he nodded slightly.
"Anyway," he continued. "First year potions classes shall start next week, and classes will resume as normal."
"Well, why didn't the first years get a bunch of substitutes like we did?"
"Because I would rather have them start the subject of Potions with an experienced professional," replied the professor, staring at the fourth year who'd spoken. The kid gulped nervously, and slowly shrunk back in his seat. The room was silent for a moment as the children soaked in the information that had recently been given to them.
"Does that mean the first years won't have to do all that homework?" a third year said out loud, timidly. Dumbledore looked at the kid for a second, then he spoke,
"Would you willingly except all of that work, knowing that it was not your fault?" The kid slowly shook his head, and turned back to his meal.
"I think that is quite enough for that Albus," Professor Mcgonagall quietly. The headmaster nodded.
"Also," he continued. "It has come to my attention that children find it amusing to fool around by the Whomping Willow while returning from Hogsmeade visits." James laughed at their stupidity, and Remus gulped, and shifted in his seat nervously.
"It is not a toy," he said seriously. "It is a method of defense and it needs to not be touched." A few third years were snickering and pointing to a group of fifth years who were obviously the culprits, as they were bowing down at Dumbledore's words.
"The next person to go near the Willow," threatened the headmaster in a low voice, "will be suspended for quite a period of time." The laughter in the room stopped, and silence fell upon them.
"Why that harsh of a punishment!" yelled a fifth year, looking around at his classmates, who nodded in approval at his words.
"The reasoning has reasons that cannot and will not be given," said Dumbledore. "Secrets are not meant to be shared, especially the ones hidden behind locked doors." He looked around, and continued.
"We can not control our dangers." Remus looked down at his plate. "But we can control our safety, and-"
"Jazz, I'm going to the library," whispered Lily. "I'm not exactly feeling that great." Jazz looked away from the headmaster, and her gaze turned to Lily; concerned.
"Don't go to the library then, let me take you to the Hospital Wing!" Lily shook her head.
"No, I just want to go to the library, I'll be back by curfew. Bye," she said suddenly, abruptly leaving the conversation. Jazz narrowed her eyes, and grabbed Cherry by the arm.
"Bathroom," she explained to the boys. Alice looked at her in confusion. 'Tell you later,' mouthed Jazz, running after Lily, dragging a puzzled Cherry with her. Alice shrugged, and picked up a piece of chicken with her fork. She bit down on her food savoring the juicy flavor.
"Where'd she go?" said Cherry, looking around.
"She's somewhere in here," replied Jazz. "Look!"
"The girls peered through a hole in the shelf that they were currently standing-hiding- behind. There was Lily, sitting alone at a table, tapping her quill on the table impatiently.
"It's like she's waiting for something," said Cherry.
"Or someone," added Jazz. "Look." A figure was approaching the table, his back turned to the girls.
"I can't see his face," whined Cherry.
"His cuffs are green," noted Jazz, concluding that he was, "A Slytherin." Cherry gasped dramatically.
"A Slytherin? But…but why? And, um, how?!" The figure lifted it's hood, and peered around cautiously.
"So, no one else is here, right?" The voice asked timidly. Jazz's eyes widened. She recognized that voice, but her mind was a blank as she tried to remember his name.
"It's one of Lily's friends…" she said. Cherry gasped again, earning a dark stare from Jazz.
"She's…freaking friends with a Slytherin!" whispered Cherry furiously. Jazz rolled her eyes, as Cherry continued her rant. "But Slytherins are rude, and mean, and evil, and stupid, and unfair, and they're not truthful, and…and I HATE THEM! Lily is a house traitor! Lily Evans, a Gryffindor, is friends with a Slytherin! An evil Slytherin! Slytherins, are just so, so evil! And-"
"Cherry, shut up," said Jazz, nudging her friend in the side.
"Severus, you haven't been answering my letters," said Lily. Jazz snapped her fingers, then winced at the noise. Severus, that's what it was. Severus shrugged nonchalantly.
"Well, I've been busy," he replied casually. Lily looked hurt. Cherry growled quietly, and Jazz laughed at her menacing expression. "And I need to leave now."
"But you've only been here for a minute," said Lily quietly, looking at Severus with wide eyes. He sighed.
"I'm sorry Lily, I really am. But if anyone found out that I was friends with a Gryffindor…well, let's just say my life would be torture. Especially, a mud-muggle born, because-"
"You said there was not anything wrong with being a muggle-born," said Lily, in a monotone. Severus shook his head quickly.
"There isn't Lily, promise. It's just Slytherin prejudice."
"Well, fine, but don't pretend like you're all pure and mighty," replied Lily.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I know you're a half-blood, remember?" shot Lily harshly. Severus looked down at his feet.
"I'm sorry, Lily." Lily stayed silently, leaned back in her chair, and crossed her arms over her chest. Cherry's eyes widened, as she witnessed the scene in front of her.
"A half-blood Slytherin?" she whispered. "I've never heard of that happening, it must be really, really, rare." Jazz shrugged, her eyes still on Lily and Severus.
"I have to go," said Severus, eyes pleading with his friend. Lily said nothing, only continued to stare at him. Severus shook his head. As he left the library, Jazz and Cherry watched a tear slip from the usually fiery red-head's eye.
"She doesn't care that he's a Slytherin," said Cherry observantly.
"But he cares that she is a muggle-born Gryffindor," replied Jazz, anger tinted in her voice. They watched as another tear fell from Lily's emerald eyes. And another. And another. And another, and another. Soon, the tears were free-falling from her eyes, and Lily Evans was sobbing uncontrollably on a pile of library books.
"I think we should go talk to her," whispered Jazz. Cherry nodded.
"But I'm a little hesitant to let her know that we've been spying on her. Jazz rolled her eyes.
"Big words," she said sarcastically. "Are you sure you can handle them?"
"Oh shut up," replied Cherry, swatting Jazz on the arm. "Come on."
The two girls quietly walked over to Lily, who's head was bent over the desk. Her crying had stopped, and she was simply sitting there; still as a statue.
"Um, Lily?" said Cherry quietly. Lily didn't move.
"Have you and Severus gotten into a fight?" said Jazz. Cherry elbowed her.
"Idiot! We just saw that!" she said.
"Just trying to help," said Jazz, shrugging. Lily lifted her head. Her eyes were red and puffy.
"You know what guys, I'm fine. Let's just go back to dinner." Jazz and Cherry exchanged a glance. She was obviously lying. Cherry opened her mouth to speak, but jazz nudged her in the side.
'Let's not talk about it,' she mouthed.
"You want to talk about it?" said Cherry. Jazz rolled her eyes. Go figure. Lily shook her head.
"Well, curfew is in like fifteen minutes. DO you want to just go back to the dorms, or do you want to hit dinner for a few minutes first?" Lily was silent for a moment. Then she sighed.
"Let's just go back to the dorms, we can wait up for Alice." Cherry nodded.
"Good idea, Lils."
"Well thanks for waiting up for me, Lily," said Alice sarcastically to a sleeping Lily. "How long did she last, anyway?" Jazz laughed.
"Literally like two minutes. She fell asleep muttering about how she was a great friend for staying up for you." Alice rolled her eyes.
"Well then, the award for best friend ever goes to you," said Alice to the still form of Lily. No reply was heard. Jazz laughed again.
"So, you guys tired?" Cherry and Alice shook their heads in unison. Cherry flopped down on her bed.
"Oh! You guys haven't told e where you ran off too! I was stuck pretending I cared about James and Sirius's Quidditch stories, with Peter being fascinated with them, and Remus feeling sorry for me." Alice crossed her arms over her chest. Jazz stifled a laugh.
"Sounds like fun," she said enthusiastically. Alice chucked a pillow at her.
"So what happened?!" yelled Alice.
"Ssshhh!" reminded Cherry, gesturing towards their sound asleep friend.
"Um, so Lily is friends with a Slytherin," started Jazz. Alice's eyes widened. "And he's a half-blood." Alice's eyes were as wide as saucers now. "And-" Jazz continued to tell the story, and Cherry continued to add in small details forgotten by her friend.
"And so we came back here early," said Jazz.
"And that is pretty much it," finished Cherry. Alice nodded.
"Well… that was a lot to take in." Jazz shrugged. "So Lily is friends with a Slytherin? And he is a half-blood? And he is ditching her, a muggle-born, so he can hangout with pure-blood Slytherins?" Cherry nodded.
"Yup, that's pretty much it." Alice exhaled.
"Wow."
"I know." Alice looked at Lily, who was sleeping, snoring slightly.
"I know that we should probably talk more about this, and I hate to say it, but I'm exhausted. Everything is just tiring me out," said Cherry. Alice nodded, and Jazz sighed.
"I'm not tired, but we do have exams tomorrow-" Alice snorted.
"You sound like Lily." Right on cue, Lily snorted loudly. The girls looked at each other in silence for a moment, then burst out in laughter.
"Wha-what's so funny," mumbled Lily drowsily, wiping drool from her mouth with her sleeve. That just set them off again. Jazz looked at her friends, silently appreciating them.
She never knew how fast things could change.
A/N: Okay, it's been forever. SAWREE! ATTENTION:For those of you who plan to continue reading this story, it would be wise to read this next part. After this chapter, I'm skipping to their THIRD YEAR.AND ALSO: PEOPLE, who have been asking why Remus has been acting so confident, OF COURSE it is an act! Lupin is never this confident until about 5th year or so. This is really important if you want to understand the next part in the story.
And that was pretty long. Thanks for reading! I love you :)
