Chapter 9: A Happy Ending

Later on, it became night time. The moon was full and bright on this particular evening. Whether it was just out of sheer luck or not, it certainly gave off a romantic vibe. The stars shinning brightly over the neighborhood only added to how beautiful it looked. Despite how the breathtaking night sky, most of everyone in the neighborhood had fallen asleep, except for Rita and Runt.

The two were still awake and went into the backyard of their owner's after managing to open the back sliding door. "So what do you think of this place so far Runt?" Rita asked as she rode top of Runt's back as they walked around the backyard. "I really like it here Rita!" Runt replied, "Our new master seems like a really nice guy! Definitely a really nice guy! And we are friends with Buttons now, so that's great!"

Rita looked at the night sky and how beautifully romantic it looked. She knew it was now or never to finally tell Runt how she felt. "Hey Runt," she said, getting off his back and stopping in front of him, "Remember when I was asking about love and stuff to you? And how much I come to appreciate you?" "Yeah, I remember," said Runt. "Well, there is more meaning to what I said," Rita explained, "Without you, I don't feel like we'd be here right now. I wish I could describe how much of a positive impact you have left on me ever since we met. I will admit, I wasn't too sure about you at first, but overtime, you proved to me that not all dogs are bad. And as for that someone who likes you as more than a friend, that friend is...me."

While Rita blushed, Runt also did, but was in both shock and surprise, "You Rita??? But why you?" "Because you are special to me," said Rita, "There hasn't been anyone who treats me as well as you or has even had the amount of care that you do. The truth is Runt, I love you!" She then grabbed him by his floppy ears and kissed him on his lips. The face on Runt was priceless, as he clearly didn't see that coming.

Rita then stopped kissing to observe Runt. Runt was practically frozen from the kiss. He didn't really know how to react, since he was never kissed on the lips before. He definitely liked Rita, but he never really thought she saw him as more than a friend. Now the question remained, would he wanna be more than just friends with her or just want to stay as friends?

After some more silence, Rita began to get a little worried. Runt then said, "Rita, I love you." He then kissed Rita on the lips. This one was more powerful than Rita's and Rita herself knew it too. It may have been more impactful because of Runt being a dog, or just the unexpectedness of Runt reacting that way. But it was clear that Runt was more than happy to be more than just friends with Rita.

The two then stopped kissing and Runt said with a smile, "That was really nice Rita. Definitely really nice!" "So, I'm guessing you also want to be more than just friends Runt?" asked Rita, smiling too. "I'd love to be more than just friends with you!" said Runt proudly, "You are such a good dog! Definitely! Definitely a good dog!"

With that the two put their arms around each other as they looked at the beautiful full moon. What future awaited them was not known, but since they were now friends with Buttons and finally had a home with a promising owner, things looked bright. A cat and dog together seemed like an odd couple, but to them, it was something very special. And nobody was going to break the strong bond they had now.

THE END!

To those who read, thank you for checking out the story and I hoped you liked it! Much like the previous Animaniacs Fanfic, inspiration from other stories and fanart were taken. The Lake chapter was very much inspired by Cantus Arcticus from Einojuhani Rauataara, which is also part of the story's OST.

If you liked the story, feel free to give it a heart and comment! Anyway, see you guys in the next story I make!
