Chapter 6: Let's try that again
"Spyro? Are you here?" Eon called out as he walked through one of the islands near the academy worriedly looking for the purple dragon. He hadn't seen any sign of Spyro since the guardians departure and neither did Hugo or the other students, this caused the aging headmaster to worry that something happened to him especially since he was still so young and reckless. Just as he was about to call for the dragon again he heard the sound of someone whimpering. He immediately turned to the direction of the sound, facing a lone tree when he heard someone sniffling from above. Looking up Eon found the source, sitting on one of the branch was the young Spyro, hugging a book close to his chest with tears in his eyes.
"Spyro! Oh there you are, I was worried sick about you! What are you doing up there?" Eon asked worriedly as he held out his arms for Spyro to come down, but instead Spyro just turned his back away from him, hugging the book tighter. "Spyro?"
"W-Why did you let them take her away?" Spyro sniffled, still not looking at Eon. As soon as Eon heard that he could feel his heart hurt, he knew that her departure would be hard on Spyro, but he never expected to see him like this. He let out a sigh.
"Spyro, I know this is hard but-" "But its not fair!" Spyro interrupted him as he finally looked at him, tears now streaming his face. "I-I didn't mean for her to get hurt! I-I just wanted to have a awesome Birthday with her, and now I'll never see her again!"
"Spyro, that's not true." Eon said softly as he sat down at the bottom of the tree. "The guardians were worried that she wouldn't be able to handle what it took to become a skylander, so for at the time being she will train at the temple." Eon explained. "Still...It's my fault she's gone..." Spyro whimpered as he fluttered down off the tree and laied on Eon's lap. "It's not your fault Spyro, don't ever think that. You made a honest mistake, we all do..." Eon told him as he gently pat his head as he looked at the book in Spyro's claws. "Did she give you that?" Eon asked and Spyro nodded. "It's the Birthday gift she gave me..."
"May I?" Eon asked softly. After a moment Spyro handed over the book to Eon. Eon took the book and looked at the cover 'Tales of Skylands' is what it said. "Ah, I remember this book, I actually helped with its creation." Eon said as he flipped through the pages. "You did?" Spyro asked looking at him as Eon nodded. "Right you are, Ignitus wanted to write a book about the many heroic deeds of the old heroes, so I asked some of the Skylanders to tell their stories. I could listen to their stories all day." Eon said as Spyro listened. "And who knows, maybe you and Oriana might have your own stories that will be told." Eon said as he looked down at Spyro with a soft smile.
Spyro looked back at him, he wiped the tears away from his eyes and looked determined. "Well I promise that I will be the best Skylander of all time!" He said, causing Eon to smile and pull him into a warm hug.
"I know you will Spyro..."
Present day
...
'Spyro!'
...
'Spyro wake up!'
...
'WAKE UP!'
Spyro woke up with a gasp as his eyes shot open before coughing like mad. Groaning softly he looked around his surroundings, he noticed that he landed on one of the nearby islands, not too far away from the academy or the Arena. He managed to pull himself up as he rubbed his head. "Owww, that's gonna leave a mark..." He said before suddenly gasping. "The others!" He said as he was about to spread his wings before he heard Kaos's laugh coming from the academy. Spyro looked back at the academy, feeling torn. "If I can just get the book.." He muttered before taking off to the academy.
The academy
The academy's Library was covered head to toe with toilet paper as Kaos gleefully threw more while Glumbshanks held some extra rolls of it. "Ahh nothing like petty vandalism for the soul eh Glumshanks." Kaos said as he stopped throwing and admired his work.
"Quite right sir, I heard it reduces stress and murder tendency's." Glumbshanks said as he put down the extra rolls of toilet paper.
"Now what was I gonna do next? Oh right, take over Skylands, starting by destroying this book." Kaos said as he stared at the book in his hands before putting it down on a nearby table before grabbing a nearby statue and hitting the book with it, but it did nothing. He tried a few more times but it didn't even leave a dent as Glumshanks watched. "Hand me that bust of Eon Glummy." Kaos said pointing to the much larger statue of Eon. Glumshanks walked over and tried his best to lift it, but he accidentally listed the head up from it, causing the bookshelf beside it to lower.
"Woah, some some sort of single bookcase vault." Kaos said as he watched the bookshelf finish lowering and revealing a second bookshelf. "Ooh, a double bookcase vault!" He said in excitement as he went to inspect the shelf. As he looked through all the books he noticed that one had a button on it which he pressed. A scanner appeared and scanned Kaos who stood there curious and confused.
'facial hair not recognized.' The robotic voice said, leaving Kaos more confused but then turned to Glumshanks who still had the frozen beard lock in his hands.
"Glumshanks! Fork over the beard!" Kaos said and Glumshanks gladly did. Kaos then held the beard up to the book and let the lock be scanned.
'Disgustingly moist facial hair identified. Welcome, master Eon' The robotic voice spoke again as the second bookshelf opened for the young wizard and troll.
"I was kinda hoping for another bookcase." Glumshakes said.
Smiling with glee Kaos made his way down the corridor with Glumshanks. As soon as they made it down they stared in awe when they saw the treasure. Kaos immediately went to inspect the treasures.
"Look at all this gold!" Kaos said in awe as he put a few rings on his fingers. "Glumshanks, how much gold is too much gold?" He asked as he admired the rings.
"One can never have too much gold, sir." Glumshanks replied as he was busy putting some of the treasures into his own pockets.
"Hmm, indeed."Kaos said, but then he he noticed out of the corner of his eye the small wooden box hiding under the treasure. "Well, what have we here?" He said as he put the book on the stand and walk towards the box. He moved the treasures out of the way as he picked up the box and inspect the outside of it, noticing the elemental symbols on the top. He then opened it and laid eyes on what looked like a small piece of cloth inside. Taken it out he noticed that it was folded, unfolding it he saw that it actually a torn piece of what looked like a old tapestry. The tapestry depicted the core of light being protected by all the Skylanders from what looked like ape like creatures, a bigger one leading the charge. What caught his eye was the giant shape of a dragon staring down at the Skylanders and the core of light with bright red from behind the army. Kaos stared at it in curiosity.
"Find anything interesting sir?" Glumshanks asked as he struggled to walk with the treasure in his pockets.
"You bet I did, behold Glumshanks!" Kaos said and held up the tapestry and box, when Glumshanks saw them his eyes went wide.
"Oh my ancestors!" Glumshanks said as he took the box and inspected it. "This box must've been carved from wood only found in the Forest of Fear. The details are so precise and elegant, not a single flaw, can you believe a living being made such a beautiful-"
"I'm not talking about the box dumb-dumb!" Kaos interrupted him annoyed. "I'm talking about this!" He said and pointed to the tapestry.
"Oh, right." Glumshanks said as he looked at the art on the tapestry. "My that's some...violent imagery."
"I know right! I've never seen anything like it before." Kaos said as he folded the tapestry and put it into his pocket.
Just then Spyro burst though the door of the library and quickly flew down to the Relics Room, startling both Kaos and Glumshanks, the ladder of which immediately hiding behind a pillar.
"Oh great its you again." Kaos said unamused.
"Yeah it's me! But you can call me Spyro!" Spyro said determinedly before sending out a wave of fire towards Kaos. Kaos without waiting sends a blast of lightning at he dragon, both of their magic meeting in the middle as Glumshanks watched. Spyro's fire was beginning to get the upper hand, noticing this Kaos intensifies his power, pushing his and Spyro's power back at the dragon, knocking him back and slamming him against the wall and landing with a defeating thud.
"Ahaha! You actually thought you could beat me after what happened before?" Kaos taunted with glee before turning to the book still on the stand. "And now time to destroy the book." He said as he walked towards the stand.
Spyro tried his best to stand up, but the fight from before and just now was finally taking its toll. He fell back down and felt his eyes grow heavy. He blinked a few times, trying to stay awake.
'Spyro...'
...
'Spyro'
...
"Spyro!"
A younger spyro opened his eyes with a startle. He let out a yawn before looking around, he was still on the island he had sneaked to in the middle of the night to play without Eon noticing.
"Morning sleepy head! I've been looking all over for you!" Spyro looked to see who was talking. He saw a young dragon sitting on top of the tree branch watching him. She was around his age. Her scales were a silverish blue with her underbelly being a more pale blue, her horns, spines and tail were a much darker grey and she wore what looked like a necklace with a small crystal hanging off it, though it was a little big for her. She stared back at him with her golden eyes and big smile.
"Ori! Don't sneak up on me like that! I could've torched you!" Spyro said trying not to smile. "And I thought you and the guardians weren't coming here for another week."
"Weeell I lied! I wanted to surprise you!" The dragon giggled before she fluttered down and sat beside Spyro. "And It's Oriana remember, you know I don't like that nickname."
"What? It's easy to say and it's got a nice ring to it!" Spyro said smiling.
"Yeah you say that all the time." Oriana said rolling her eyes. "Oh! I almost forgot, I got a surprise for you, but you gotta close your eyes for it!"
"Really?" Spyro said, and Oriana nodded. "This isn't another prank is it, it's not gonna be like last time when you tried to make me kiss that frog is it?"
"Nope, just close your eyes and hold out your claws." She said, Spyro shrugged and then closed his eyes, holding out his claws. After a moment he felt Oriana place something in his claws. "Ok, you can open them now."
When Spyro opened his eyes he let out a gasp. In his claws was a book, the cover having the words 'Tales of Skylands' etched into the cover. "No way!"
"Happy Birthday Spyro!" Oriana said smiling big.
"How the heck did you managed to get your claws on this! I thought this book wasn't gonna be released till next month!" Spyro said in shock as he flipped though the pages.
"It was, but I was able to convince dad if I could give you the book early as your present." Oriana explained as she watched Spyro flipped though the pages.
"Wow this book has almost all the Skylanders in it, the Sensei's, The Giants- holy sheep it has Flavius and The Dragon Throne!" Spyro said as his tail wagged in happiness.
"Woah! I didn't know that!" Oriana said as she looked at the page in excitement.
"So many Skylanders, that could be us someday, we could be in this book Ori!" Spyro said looking at her.
"You really think so? I mean I'm not the best with my element..." Oriana said looking down.
"You kidding me? Your the kid of one of the most powerful dragons in all of Skylands! I'm sure you'll master your fire someday!" Spyro told her. "And when you do, we'll become Skylanders together."
Oriana looked back at Spyro, smiling at him before saying. "Promise that no matter what we'll become Skylanders?" She asked and Spyro nodded.
"promise."
...
'Remember your promise'
Spyro's eyes shot open, he looked to see Kaos about to grab the book, he also saw a few treasures stacked up high close to him with a medium size shield standing on top. Without a moment to waste Spyro stood up and threw his body against the treasure, the force was enough to knock the shield down and as soon as Kaos noticed the shield hit him right on the face, knocking him down to the ground.
Spyro panted as he looked at Kaos before sighing. "Finally..." He muttered as he approaches the sorcerer to grab the book off him. He was just inches away from grabbing it before Kaos suddenly hit him right in the face with the book, sending Spyro backwards and landing on the ground.
"No one hits Kaos with a shield, dragon!" Kaos said as he walked to Spyro. Spyro was trying to stand back up but Kaos hit him again with the book, he begun to hit him repeatedly with the book. "About to be eliminated by the very book your trying to save." He said as he hit him again. "Well at least you'll learn one lesson before your end." Kaos said as he readied the final blow. "Your not strong enough to beat me on your own."
Spyro with all his strength lifted his head towards Kaos, a slight smirk on his face. "Your right. I'm not." After he said that he let out a stream of fire towards Kaos, who out of instinct held the book to protect himself, the fire caused the ice that coated the book to melt. Spyro couldn't help but smile before everything went black.
Back at the arena the others were still trying to break free from the ice, but suddenly they noticed the ice start to melt. Soon the ice was completely melted they all looked at themselves surprised but relieved.
"Aha now that's more like it!" Terrafin smiled as he stretched his limbs. "Now where's that melon head, I wanna rematch!"
"Were free!" Trigger Happy said smiling big.
"Wait...that means." Gill Grunt said as he and the others all looked at the Academy, without a moment to waste they made a b line towards it.
Meanwhile Kaos and Glumshanks were both staring at the unconscious Spyro. "Great, that lizard brain unfroze the book!" Kaos said in annoyance. "Alright, plan B, Glummy. Let's get out of here right now!"
"For once I agree sir!" Glumshanks said as he and Kaos ran as fast as they could out of the relics room. They turned to the door but stopped dead in their tracks when they saw Eon, Gill Grunt, Trigger Happy, Stealth Elf ,Eruptor and Terrafin standing there, looking angry.
"Eh...how's it going?" Kaos laughed nerviously.
"Now that you've seen the library, how about an aerial tour of the rest of the academy?" Eon said as the Skylanders slowly walked towards them.
"In hindsight, maybe you should've re-frozen that book sir." Glumshanks whispered to Kaos as they slowly stepped back.
The sound of Kaos and Glumshanks getting beat up could be heard from outside, next thing Glumshanks and Kaos were sent flying towards a nearby island, both landing with a loud thud.
"Oww..." Kaos groaned as he stood up, looking around. "We're alive, Glumshanks! Alive!" Kaos said relieved.
"Ow...yes sir we are..." Glumshanks said from under Kaos.
"I really should've re-froze that book." Kaos said as he got off Glumshanks. "I was so close to finally winning! If it wasn't for that dragon! Ooh what I get my hands on him-
"I know sir, it's really disappointing, but I'm sure you'll come up with a even more evil scheme." Glumshanks said trying to calm him down. "Besides, at least I got to keep this!" He pulled out the wooden box from his pocket. "I've been looking for something to store my book mark collection."
Kaos looked at him annoyed but when he saw the box, he remembered the tapestry. He quickly checked his pockets and pulled it out, unfolding it he looked at the art on it, his eyes darting between The Core of Light and the dark figure of a dragon. "Actually Glumshanks..." He started, a evil smile spreading across his face as he thought of his new scheme. "I think I have the perfect plan." He said as he let out a loud and wicked laugh.
A few hours later
"He's been out for a very long time Hugo..."
"I know he is, he got hurt really badly..."
"Is he dead?"
"No Trigger Happy, if he was dead Hex would've been knocking at the door by now."
Spyro groaned softly, his head was throbbing in pain as he struggled to open his his eyes.
"Oh he's waking up, I guess he's alive."
When Spyro finally opened his eyes he noticed that he was in his room, laying on his bed. He looked at his body, seeing that his chest, right arm, legs and left wing were wrapped in bandages. In front was a mirror where he could a better look at the bandages, he also noticed that his head was also wrapped in a bandage, as well as a really bad black eye. He then noticed Eon, Gill Grunt, Trigger Happy and Hugo were standing beside his bed looking concerned
"Spyro, are you alright!?" Eon asked him worriedly.
"Uh, no, can't say I am. I'm actually in a staggering amount of pain." Spyro said trying to make a joke, but then he let out a hiss of pain and grabbed his side.
"Take it easy there, you got pretty beaten up." Hugo told him, putting the bandages back in the first aid kit.
"Indeed, we've all suffered terrible losses today." Eon said, looking down at his now much shorter beard in sadness.
"Wait? Where are the others?" Spyro said as he looked around.
"You mean the elf and her rock friend? They actually helped us bring you back here, nice people they were." Gill Grunt told him. "Terrafin also helped, but he 'accidently' dropped you at one point."
"Sure he did." Spyro said and then turned to Eon. "You know Master Eon, that fight with Kaos taught me a lot. I'm sorry that I didn't take becoming a Skylander more seriously, I promise that I'll train harder. And I want you to know that I'll be ready to go next year."
"Actually, I think you're ready now, Spyro." Eon said, causing Spyro to look surprised. Eon then pulled out the book ad begun to draw in it. "When I saw you willing to put yourself at risk for not only ours, but all of Skylands safety, I knew you had the true soul of what it meant to be a Skylander. You still have much to learn, you all do, but I'm sure you will all be some of the greatest protectors in all the lands." He said and finished drawing and turned to show Spyro the drawing of him, which Spyro stared at in awe.
"T-Thank you Eon." Spyro said with a wide smile across his face.
"Aha you did it buddy! Now the three of us are Skylanders!" Trigger Happy said as he pulled both him and Gill Grunt into a tight hug.
"Owowowowow still in pain! Still in pain!" Spyro said as Trigger Happy realized and loosened his grip on him.
"I'm proud of you Spyro." Gill Grunt said with a smile. "...but seriously if you ever do something that stupid ever again I will punch you." He said at him, causing Spyro to laugh nervously.
"Thanks guys, I owe you one." Spyro said smiling.
"Alright, I think we should let Spyro rest, we all had a really long day." Hugo said as Trigger Happy let go both of them.
"He's right, we'll need to prepare in case Kaos tries to attack again." Eon said. Hugo, Gill Grunt and Trigger Happy left the room, leaving Eon and Spyro along. "I almost forgot." He pulled out Spyro's book and handed it to him. "I found it in the kitchen, I thought you could read it while your wounds are healing."
Spyro gladly took the book. "Thanks Eon, for everything." He said. Eon smiled and left the room. Spyro looked down at the book as he opened it, staring at the messy writing. He smiled softly at it. "Yeah...see you when were Skylanders."
