As the next two months went on, Rick and Kate spent every free moment together, either in her apartment or over at his house. Kate went into Alexis' bedroom and picked her out of her crib and placed her on her hip. The little girl smiled at her and opened her mouth.

"Mama." She said.

"Did I just hear her right?" Rick asked.

"I think so, but that's usually one of their first words."

Alexis looked directly at Kate, "MAMA!" She said.

"No, sweetie, I'm Daddy's friend Kate. I'm not your mama." Kate told her.

"Mama." Alexis insisted. They walked downstairs together. Her pager buzzed.

"Sorry, I gotta take this. See you later?" She asked.

"Sure." Rick kissed her.

"see you later, pumpkin!" She kissed Alexis' head.

"Mama!" Alexis wailed.

Kate walked into the morgue. "So, Lanie, what do you got for me this time?"

"Nothing unusual this time, a few bullets to the chest, nothing that indicated a struggle. Speaking of struggles, what's with you and the writer monkey?"" Lanie answered.

"I don't know, Lanie. She called me Mama, and she never says it around anyone else. Things with Rick are great, but …."

"But what? You both love each other. The circumstances are a bit odd, but go for it, girlfriend! And if that cutie thinks you're her mother, and you're already acting like it. "

A few more months passed, and Rick was ready to complete his family again. He opened his desk drawer and took a small package out. He hoped everything would go well tonight. Rick poured a few glasses of wine and made his most romantic dish.

After dinner that night, he took her on a walk and stopped at the swings. Their swings, he thought, picturing all the times they took Alexis there and played spider or placed her in one of the baby swings nearby.

"I guess it's official. Alexis seems to think you're her mother, and I know I can never replace Meredith's part in her life with someone else, but there's no denying how we feel about each other."

"Rick…." She tried to interrupt.

"These past few months have been crazy, and I would have never been able to get through them without you." He paused and got down on one knee, "Katherine Beckett, would you do the honor of being my wife and second mother to Alexis?"

"Did I just hear you right? Are you asking me to marry you?"

"Did I not state it clearly enough?" He joked. "Are your ears working?"

"They're working just fine. And yes, I will. " He slipped the ring onto her finger.

A.N. I had to speed the chapters up a bit so we can get to the usual CASKETT banter and fluff their creators wrote.
