Two Brains in the Outfit

It was during the late afternoon hours that Leonardo, on his way to the kitchen to grab himself a snack from Ice Cream Kitty, heard a ruckus emanating from Donatello's lab. He stopped mid-step, his brow raised curiously as he listened. It sounded like there was more than one person inside, and judging from the volume, he guessed it wasn't April assisting Donatello with any of his projects. She was never that loud. And it wasn't Raphael, because he was in the dojo sparring with Casey. Splinter never usually went into Donnie's lab unless he wanted to speak with him, and he hardly ever made a sound, being a ninja master and all…

But Leo hadn't seen Michelangelo a lot that day…

"Uh oh," Leo groaned with dread, changing his course and heading straight for the lab. The only reason such commotion would be coming from there would be if Mikey had gotten bored again, and had decided to pester Donnie. The last time Mikey had meddled with Donnie's things, the purple clad turtle's mentality had been reduced to that of a mischievous four-year-old's, whilst the city had been attacked by a hideous monstrosity called 'Creep-Weed'. The last thing any of them wanted was a repeat of that, or something much worse…and considering Donnie was working on a retromutagen…

However, when Leo opened the doors, he was surprised to find that the only chaos ensuing was…

"So, this chemical thingy goes in this beaker?" Mikey asked, holding a beaker filled to the brim with a strange, glowing pink liquid that Leo couldn't identify. He was sat on the floor in the center of the lab, surrounded by test tubes, beakers of all sorts and scattered papers with notes scribbled over them, most of which not even Leo could understand. Sat next to him in a similar cross-legged position was the purple banded genius himself, tongue protruding from the corner of his mouth as he poured one beaker filled with a mysterious substance into another.

At Mikey's question, Donnie looked up at what Mikey held, and after staring at it for several seconds, he shook his head. "No, no, Mikey, the pink one needs to be mixed with the green one on your left, not the yellow one," he explained patiently, "otherwise, those other two will explode."

Mikey blinked once, mulling over Donnie's words. "Oh, right," he muttered thoughtfully, before carefully setting down the 'yellow one' on the floor, exchanging it for the 'green one'. Mimicking Donnie as the tip of his tongue stuck out of the side of his mouth, Mikey slowly poured the green contents into the other pink beaker. Sure enough, the combined chemicals created a nut colored liquid that bubbled for a moment before settling peacefully.

Leo let out a sigh of relief. No explosions for a change.

"There you go, see?" Donnie grinned proudly, patting Mikey on the shoulder. "You're doing great, Mikey."

The younger turtle's eyes were bright and full of glee as he turned to beam at Donnie. "For reals, D?" he asked.

Chuckling, Donnie nodded, draping an arm around Mikey's shoulders and bringing him close. "Yeah, Mikey. For reals. And with your help, we should be back to where I left off by the end of the day," he chortled, giving Mikey a light noogie and earning a giggle from his younger brother before he released him, and the two of them got back to work.

Standing in the doorway of the lab, Leo had seen everything unfold, and his smile couldn't have been any wider as he folded his arms over his chest, leaning against the door as he watched his youngest brothers' work. Of course, this wasn't the first time he'd seen Mikey in Donnie's lab attempting to help Donnie with whatever experiments he'd thought up, but nine times out of ten, it always ended up with broken test tubes and spilled chemicals all over the place, with Donnie then chasing a screaming Mikey about the lair with a singed broom.

This time, however, Mikey was being very, very careful. He was listening, paying close attention to what Donnie was telling him, and actually reading the notes they had scattered around them in organized chaos. And if Mikey didn't understand something, he asked questions, instead of simply winging it. And Donnie, instead of getting frustrated and impatient with Mikey, listened as well, and then calmly explained it in a way that Mikey could easily grasp, hardly any complicated words or phrases thrown in the mix.

They were working as a team now, like a well-oiled machine. Two brains in the outfit.

It appeared that the 'Creep-Weed' incident had a good influence on both of them, even if it'd almost cost them Donnie's brain and the whole city being consumed by living plants. In fact, it taught them all a very valuable lesson.

It showed them all how much they actually relied on Donnie's intelligence, more so than they'd all thought at first. Without him around, the team would hardly stand a chance against the threats they faced every day. Also, it showed them all, for the umpteenth time, that even though Mikey could sometimes act like a complete goof, he's far more capable and intelligent than they give him credit for, which is something they all, especially Leo himself, are ashamed to admit.

Leo let out a soft chuckle. "Way to go, B Team," he said, before slipping through the doors unnoticed, leaving the two geniuses to their work.

A/N: Gotta love the B-Team Bromance, huh? XD I hope you liked it, and more are on the way! :)
