The Masquerade
Kurt stares into space as Rachel races through the apartment mumbling about something that he doesn't really care about. His life has been boring and he hates it. He's stuck in the same old pattern of work, home, sleep, work, home . . . sleep. He's tired of it. He tried spicing it up by attending another one of Isabelle's events, but it resulted in an elderly gentlemen trying to grope him in the bathrooms. It also involved him getting removed from said event for kneeing the guy in the groin. Isabelle was quite proud, but she did have to reprimand him in front of her boss for the sake of appearance.
He had even tried reapplying for Nyada in an attempt to restart his education career, but he hasn't heard back from the school yet and he's already been reading acceptance reactions already. It wasn't quite the confidence boost that he was hoping for. As far as he was concerned, Nyada doesn't deserve him anyways especially not after being turned down for a rather spectacular audition song in his opinion.
His only other options were to find a local cafe were he could meet some regulars and form some new friendships. He loves Rachel, but it's either incredibly boring or over-dramatic moments with her and it was breaking down on his spirit. He would just have to be a bit sneaky about creating friends without hurting her feelings.
"Kurt." Rachel's shrieking voice pierces his thoughts, making him wince as she storms towards him. "Are you even listening to me? This has got to be one of the most important moments of my life that will accelerate me into my Broadway career and you're just sitting there like you just ate all of my vegetarian pizza."
"First, I've been listening. Just not with great interest or with intent to remember." He smiles sweetly at her before leaning towards her and dropping his smile to a glare. "And you have no proof about the pizza so you might as well drop it. Maybe Brody ate it."
"He wouldn't do that." Rachel sneers as she brings a handful of clothes forward and holds them out to Kurt with defeated eyes. "Not please help me. I need your fashion expertise."
"You've always needed that." Kurt smiles before waving her hand away. "And I would recommend burning those. What else do you have and what is it for? Not that I wasn't listening." He rushes to catch his error with ease. "But I need more specifics. What do you . . . plan on singing?" He guesses, most likely correct based on Rachel's eager nod.
"The Nyada Winter Showcase!" Rachel drops to Kurt's side on the couch and flings her arm over her eyes. "I don't know what I'm going to do. I was thinking about doing a Christmas song since it's winter time, but that seems a bit too cliche."
"That's never bothered you before." Kurt mutters under his breath before clearing his throat and smiling widely at Rachel. "I'd say go for it. People will already be in that holiday mood so they'll be more sympathetic to your unnecessary belting."
"Unnecessary." Rachel frowns, but ignores Kurt's comment. "Well if I do Christmas, it'll have to be me in center stage, the spotlight on me."
"That smells like a dress to me." Kurt nods his head before letting his eyes flick over to her bedroom. "Do you have anything decent? Or . . ."
Rachel removes her arm from her eyes and gives Kurt her best puppy-dog look that she can muster. "I was hoping that you might let me dig into the Vogue Vault one last teensy weensy time?"
"Isabelle will never allow that." Kurt's first statement is one that he hopes stands because he doesn't feel like breaking in again.
"But you could ask her." Rachel insists. "Doesn't she still owe you from that time she got drunk on us?"
"It's not her choice." Kurt shrugs. "She's only in charge of one department. The clothes can be worn to photo shoots and places like that, but not for some silly mundane event like a talent show."
"It's a showcase!" Rachel's high-voiced statement makes Kurt bring a finger to his ear in slight pain. "And I need this, Kurt. Performing will do nothing but benefit me. It's basically the concept that all publicity is good publicity. Well any performance is a good performance."
"Unless you choke." Kurt mutters under his breath, deciding to ignore his harsh but true comments to help Rachel out. "I'll try, though. I can't guarantee anything."
"Oh thank you." She pulls Kurt forward and gives him a big fat kiss on the cheek before letting his resisting head go. "We'll go now then. Should we bring some liquor to help persuade her a bit?" Rachel asks as she stands up and takes off to her room. "Or should we just focus on the guilt?"
"You should focus more on being a human being."
"Joey."
"Come on."
"No."
"Yes."
"I'll shred all of your beanies!"
Adam sighs with defeat tossing his hands up as he steps back. "Fine. Just give me them back."
"Here you go." Joey grins before tossing Adam back a couple of his favorite beanies. "Just dress a bit normal than you would than when we go to school. It's a school event after all."
"But it's a showcase that neither of us get to be involved with. I don't see the point in it." Adam complains as he returns to his room to hide his beanies away in his bottom drawer, only leaving out his favorite one to wear that night. "Who all is going?"
"Oh you know: you, me, Christopher, Billie, Freema, David-"
"You're just naming the Doctor Who cast." Adam points out with a blank expression.
"Well the Doctor is always around." Joey argues as he crosses his arms over his chest. "Even if you don't know it."
Adam rolls his eyes before picking up his keys and dangling them in front of Joey. "Lets go then."
I know it's a short chapter, but I wanted to update. :) Next chapter will be double than this one, so hopefully that will be out soon. Let me know what you think. :)
