Hermione was kept in Gryffindor since that was where she was already sorted. Dumbledor excused her to her common room after scheduling her placements for the next day. Nervous for how she would handle herself, Hermione walked in the door to the common room.

Looking around she saw a bunch of new faces, but also a few she recognized from old photos. Her eyes went wide when she recognized the marauders. She didn't think about the fact that she would be sharing a school year with Harry's parents. Tears filled her eyes as she thought of their futures while they sat there laughing with each other.

'Hermione, get a hold of yourself' she thought. There really was no use in getting upset over the past. She didn't even know these people yet. And maybe she should keep her distance. However, the moment Sirius locked eyes with her and got a smirk on his face, she knew that wouldn't be possible.

"What's this? Are you a new student?" Sirius bounded over and stopped just a few feet from her before doing a little bow and introducing himself. "I'm Sirius, nice to meet you, my lady. What can I call you?" He extended a hand.

"Hermione." She gave her hand to be shook but was shocked when he pulled it up for a kiss instead. She rolled her eyes as she snatched her hand away and asked "Are you this forward with everybody?"

He leaned in close with a smirk, "Only the pretty ones."

"Leave her alone, Sirius. I'm serious" Lily Potter, no Evans, walked up. "I'm Lily, it's nice to meet you. I am a prefect here so if you have any questions, I will gladly help. I can show you where you'll be sleeping."

"Later Lily, let's get to know our new student first." Sirius was still smiling at them both.

James and Remus looked like they were embarrassed for Sirius, but they smiled and waved her over anyways. "I'm James."

"I'm Remus. Nice to meet you."

"Please don't mind Sirius, he was bumped on the head too many times as a baby. It stunted his ability to think straight." James said while elbowing Sirius who came and sat next to him.

Hermione hesitated before taking a seat with the group. This could possibly be a horrible idea, but she couldn't resist the idea of getting to know these people, especially the future Potters. She only wished she could do something about their fate.

"Peter! Come join us!" They called over a mousy little guy who Hermione instantly recognized as Peter Pettigrew. She couldn't help the sour look that came over her face before she stamped down her rage, knowing that she couldn't reveal his future intentions. She wondered if he was already in with the death eaters.

Peter sat down with a little wave and said "Hi, I'm Peter. It's nice to meet you."

"Likewise." Hermione said with a forced smile. Lily gave her an odd look but moved on.

"Have you already gotten your class assignments? We can see what we have that overlaps."

"No, I haven't. I actually have placement tests tomorrow."

"Placements? Where are you transferring from?" Sirius asked.

Hermione's eyes went wide for a moment. "Uh I was homeschooled."

"Homeschooled?"

"Yea. Taught by my parents, at home."

Based on their faces that wasn't a common thing. On the bright side, looking at Pettigrew, it implied she was of magical origins and not muggleborn. She didn't need that added complication to things.

They spent the rest of the evening getting to know each other mostly through small talk. Hermione was careful not to let anything go that would give too much information away.

The next morning she prepared for her placement tests. She didn't quite know what to expect and was a bit nervous. While she had tried to catch up on her studies on her own, she wasn't sure she did a good job. If Harry or Ron were here they would laugh at her. "Of course you're prepared, 'Mione." One of them would say.

She smiled sadly to herself. Who knows when she would see them next. They had been her best friends for so long and now she was in a familiar place but an unknown time. Unless she could undo this time travel it would be 20 years before she got back home.

Hermione was lost in her thoughts until she found herself in Professor McGonagall's classroom. She walked in to find the Professor sitting at her desk.

"Ms Grant I presume? I am Professor McGonagall, Head of Gryffindor house. If you have any problems you can come to me. Today I will be administering your placement exams. If you will have a seat."

The professor placed a small stack of papers in front of Hermione and motioned that she get to work. The exams covered everything from Charms, to Defense against the Dark Arts, to Potions.

Once finished Hermione walked the papers up to the Professor and placed them down.

"Very good. Allow me to summon a student for your dueling practical."

McGonagall waved her wand and spread the desks to make space then poked her head out into the hall. "Mr Snape, you are good at dueling. Come here please."

Soon Professor McGonagall walked back in with Severus Snape behind her, his brows creased, eyes narrowed and frown on his face. Once he saw Hermione his face relaxed a bit but some tension remained.

"This is to be a clean duel, for examination purposes. Do your best, and don't worry Mr Snape, you are not the one being graded."

She made the motion to begin the duel and Snape began with a stinging hex. Hermione blocked it with ease and realized she was more prepared for this part of the exam than she had any right to be. She needed to take it easy. She sent an expelliarmus his direction which he deftly blocked. 'Good' she thought, 'he will be able to put up a fight' and she shot and Avis at his head as a flock of birds began pecking at him. He waved his arms about before dispelling them angrily and shouting "Confundo!"

Hermione managed to block the spell but was hit by the stinging hex he sent immediately afterwards. This triggered something in her as she snapped to attention and wandlessly blocked the next one before sending out 3 nonverbal stuns, the third of which got through easily and a stunned Snape hit the ground.

McGonagall looked at Hermione with wide eyes as her protego was still silently up with her off hand. She shook it off and presented a shaky smile to the professor.

"Well, Ms Grant. Suffice to say you have passed the duel." The professor headed to Snape's side as she undid the stun.

Snape got up with a scowl and asked "Am I done here, professor?"

"Yes, you are both excused. Ms Grant, you will be expected in potions in an hour. I'm sure Mr Snape could show you the way." And with a wave they were both dismissed.

Snape stormed out of the room and Hermione jogged to catch up. She didn't know why but she felt bad for stunning him and seemingly angering him so badly. His attitude shouldn't be a surprise for her considering his future self but something about seeing him this young and knowing his history, no his future, made her chase him down.

"Snape wait! Why are you so upset? What's wrong?" She grabbed his arm and he yanked it back but stopped walking anyways. His black eyes met hers and her eyes widened. His eyes held so much fire. "What's wrong?" She asked again quietly.

"Where did you get so good at dueling?"

"I had a good teacher."

"You blocked my spell with your hand."

Hermione knew she messed up. Wandless magic isn't common. Snape in the future did it all the time but this Snape doesn't seem to have a grasp on it based on this negative reaction. She looked at his frowning face.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that."

"How can you do that though? Who are you?" He hissed at her.

She closed her eyes. Something about him drew her in and she didn't want him to be upset with her, especially over something so silly.

"I could teach you."

"Why would you want to do that?" He looked down at her clothes. "You're a Gryffindor, the other members of your house wouldn't like it."

"So? I don't care what others think." At this Snape looked at her closely. He seemed to be considering the offer. Hermione almost hoped he would take it. It would give her a chance to get to know this younger, different version of her surly professor.

"Hermione! How did your placements go?" Lily's voice rang down the hall. Hermione turned to look at the redhead and when she went to look back at Snape he was already walking away.
