The Games We Played
Chapter 27: A New Truth Revealed
Previously:
"We didn't see any one out there," Boggs replies. "But this envelope was on the doorstep." He holds up the envelope for everyone to see. "It's addressed to Peeta."
All eyes immediately turn to Peeta who is looking at Boggs wearily.
"I can't say that I honestly want to know what's in that," Peeta tells him bluntly.
"I know that Peeta," Boggs says gently. "But it could be something important or something sent to you by Thresh and Glimmer for helping them."
"Or it could be yet another death threat," Peeta whispers quietly so no one would hear as he tucks his head into Cato's neck trying to hide. But his actions speak louder – he reaches towards Boggs for the envelope.
Cato, who had been able to hear due to their cuddling, gives Peeta a reassuring squeeze as Peeta takes the envelope from Boggs.
His head still tucked, he quietly asks, "May Cato and I go into the office to look at the contents? We will take Brutus or Enobaria as well, especially if we need something."
"That sounds like a good idea Peeta," Boggs replies. He turns to Brutus, "I think they'd be most comfortable with you in there."
"Yes sir," Brutus says as he stands up. He sees Cato and Peeta stand as well. They leave the room and head towards the office leaving behind a silent room full of stunned people.
Most were stunned that Leonitus still hasn't complained about Peeta and Cato spending so much time together or that they were alone so much of that time. Clove especially was concerned about his no complaining. She was there when it all went down. Peeta's siblings were worried that Leonitus might try to get back at Peeta and Cato. The others worried that Leonitus would use this Cato private time against Peeta somehow.
Finnick was worrying about how quiet Leonitus was being as well but felt it had more to do with guilt and protecting something or someone. He felt as if Leonitus really wanted to tell him what was going on but felt too threatened. Finnick began to consider ways that he could help Leonitus open up.
Leonitus was stunned as he realized that he wasn't upset that Peeta was basically not following the rules for the whole 2 Suitor deal. It dawned on him he honestly didn't care but knew that he and Peeta were going to need to have a very intense conversation. He wonders if Peeta would be willing to work with him for a little while longer while he tries to find a way to protect the innocent one.
Boggs realized that everyone was done eating. "Why don't you guys go relax? Go read a book, watch TV, or play a game. Just stay away from the office. Oh, and no one is to go anywhere alone, is that understood?"
"Yes sir!" echoed through the room before everyone but Boggs, Jackson, and Paylor got up and left.
"You still up for taking the group?" Boggs asks Paylor as the last of the group left.
"I am. But with that envelope, who knows what will happen?" Paylor says. "And there's still the matter of Ariel."
"We should hear about that within the next couple of hours. Is there anything you'd like to do before we hear? The beach is just down the path. You'd need to take someone, but it really is a site to behold, very beautiful in the moonlight," Boggs says.
"I think you should take Thom and the Leeg sisters. I happen to know that they've never seen the beach," Jackson suggests. "Foxface hasn't either if I'm not mistaken."
"Rather large group, don'tcha think?" Paylor asks teasingly.
The three share a laugh.
"I think I will go. And I think I'll see if they want to join me," Paylor says standing up.
"Have fun and enjoy," Jackson says as she stands. "I think I'll see what the troops are watching." She leaves the room quickly.
"I guess I will do a quick round with Beetee to check on everyone and wait in the library for word of what Peeta received," Boggs says as he stands up and walks Paylor to the others.
Peeta sits on the couch between Cato and Brutus holding the large envelope that was left for him just minutes ago. All that was on the envelope was 'FOR PEETA MELLARK'. He looks first to Brutus then to Cato before opening the envelope. They gave Peeta the strength he needed to get through this whole ordeal. He opens the envelope and peeks inside. What he sees hurts him.
Peeta reaches in and pulls out a stack of photos. As they go through the pictures, the 3 men realize something – the pictures chronicle Peeta's life from infant to current. The first thing Cato and Brutus notice is the large number of an injured Peeta. The cuts and bruises on a toddler sized Peeta make Brutus very angry. Who could hurt a beautiful young child like that? The picture that got to Cato was one of 11 year old Peeta lying on the ground, bloody and bruised, leg swollen and bent a little funny.
"Oh God!" Peeta whispers upon seeing it.
"Brutus, remembering the story, asks, "Is this the day Gale saved you? The day your mother tossed you out?"
"Yes," Peeta replies quietly. It's all he can do to not break down after seeing how bad he looked. He can't bear to look at it anymore without feeling hurt and much anger. It's so bad; he closes his eyes and begins to shake.
Cato sees Peeta's reaction and removes the photo from Peeta's hand. He sets it on the table, picture side down. A couple pics later it's Cato's turn to feel hurt – pics of Finnick and Peeta together! The worst is the one with Peeta in Finnick's arms, both naked. The look on their faces leaves little to the imagination of what they were doing, or what was happening.
"That's a lot more than I ever needed to see," Brutus comments as he removes the photo from Peeta's hand, tossing it on the table.
The next picture was almost just as bad. It was of Peeta catching Finnick and Annie in bed together. The anguish on Peeta's face is heartbreaking. Peeta quickly tosses it down.
The next couple pictures are of Peeta in the Capitol for the games. One is of him in his parade outfit talking to Johanna and Finnick. Another is of Peeta in his training outfit with the other 5 team members. One is of Cato and Peeta at the Luau, Cato's arm around Peeta, both smiling at each other warmly.
"We should definitely keep this one," Cato says as he grabs the one from the luau. "It's like our first date picture," Cato teases. Peeta and Brutus groan together before they begin to laugh. They all 3 get back to looking at the pictures.
The next picture shows Peeta crying over Cato's body in the arena. It's followed by a photo of the pair kissing, Cato sitting on a log, Peeta in his lap.
"This was before the cannon went off that night we were supposed to be on watch," Peeta comments as his cheeks turn pink.
"Thank heaven for the cannon!" Brutus exclaims. "It would've been the first X rated games ever!"
"Very funny Brutus," Cato snips as Peeta goes to the next photo. It was Peeta crying over Glimmer's body on the beach the first time she died. The next picture was Peeta reuniting with his dad in District 13 followed by a couple more of Peeta and Cato together in 13. There's also a photo of Peeta being shot.
It's the next picture that becomes a game changer… It's Peeta and Leonitus in the elevator. Even in the photo you can feel the fear and sadness coming from Peeta.
"I'm going to kill him!" Cato roars standing up. Without looking, Peeta grabs at Cato's hand, startling him enough to make him stop.
"Cato, love, sit back down please. We're not quite done yet," Peeta says his eyes still on the picture. Cato looks at Peeta, nods, and sits.
Peeta goes to the next photograph. It's him reuniting with Cato in District 5. One can clearly see the love on both their faces, yet Peeta's has an undertone of guilt and sadness.
The next 2 photos are from his dates the day before. The one from his date with Leonitus depicts the pair on the roller coaster, Leonitus holding Peeta's hand. "It's from the roller coaster ride," Peeta says quietly. "Remember I told you about it during our date Cato." The next one shows Cato and Peeta on the beach, cuddled together, watching the fireworks. They both look happy and content in the photo.
"I say we keep that one too," Cato comments making Peeta smile.
The last photo was taken as Peeta watches a house burn. Peeta gasps. "This was taken earlier today!" he exclaims.
"What?" Cato asks as Brutus asks, "Today?"
"Yeah, you can see the colored smoke here in the corner," Peeta says as he gestures to the upper left corner of the picture. "It's after I killed Glimmer and Thresh," he added quietly.
Not catching the sadness in Peeta's voice, Brutus says, "This is more serious than I originally thought," as he begins to lay the pictures out on the table. Cato begins to see what Brutus noticed as he continues, "This person has been following you your whole life!" Brutus gestures to the photos. Peeta looks shocked, Cato worried and slightly upset. "Is there anything else in the envelope?" Brutus asks suddenly.
Peeta picks up the large envelope and looks inside. He reaches in and pulls out 2 smaller envelopes. He and Cato are both stunned to see one addressed to Cato.
"Okay, I'm beginning to freak out now," Cato says his voice shaky.
"Who reads first?" Peeta asks Cato as he hands him his envelope. They stare into one another's eyes.
"I'll go first," Cato finally says as he opens his envelope.
"Wait!" Peeta exclaims as Cato pulls out the folded letter.
"What's the matter Peeta?" Brutus asks stunned by Peeta's outburst.
Peeta shakes his head in response to Brutus before he looks deeply into Cato's eyes. "Promise me that no matter what these say," he shakes his envelope. "That you will remember that I love you and nothing will EVER change that."
"I love you too Peeta," Cato says just as passionately before leaning in, closing the distance between the two, and kissing him roughly before returning his attention back to the task at hand. He opens the envelope and finds a short note. He reads aloud:
Cato-
Peeta, Finnick, Leonitus, and yourself are in serious danger. And not just from Snow. If Coin becomes the next President, and the 4 of you survive, the games will resume and the 4 of you will be the first to go back in.
Signed,
A Friend
"Well, that truly doesn't surprise me," Brutus says. "I always felt that Coin really didn't support your relationship. And I always felt she could be as evil as Snow too."
"I wonder if she was behind Leonitus' elevator attack on Peeta," Cato ponders out loud. "I mean, it would explain how it was so easy for the guy to get away from his guards."
"Looks like we're going to have a nice little chat with him," Brutus agrees. "But what made you think of that?"
Cato just points to the picture of Peeta and Leonitus in the elevator before turning his attention back to his love. "What does your letter say Love?" he asks gently.
Peeta opens his envelope and pulls out a folded sheet of paper. He opens it and reads:
Dear Peeta,
As you can see from the pictures, I have been watching you grow up into the man you are becoming. There were many times I wanted to just drop everything and help you. But you needed to go through that pain, as well as the happiness, to make you strong.
You are going to need that strength in the upcoming weeks. Not only for the upcoming battles, but in your personal life as well. Trust in not only Cato, but Finnick and Leonitus as well. Those three will be the only ones that will be truly able to keep you safe. No matter what happens, what your orders may be, always make sure one of them stays by your side at all times.
As for Coin, I know you and the red haired girl you call 'Foxface' have been going through boxes filled with important looking papers that seem to contradict another set of papers. They were planted for the girl to find. While some of the information is true, most is false for a reason. It's to keep you all on a wild goose chase and not question Coin's true purpose for wanting the Presidency. Coin truly does not approve of homosexual relationships. She believes that to keep the human race from dying out, same sex couples need to be removed from society. What better way to do that than to become the next President. Her plan, once in office, is to rid Panem of gays and lesbians. Once that is done, she will move on to the criminal elements of Panem – thieves and murderers. With your public relationship with Cato, Leonitus, and even Finnick, you 4 are now in danger. You will need to eliminate Coin as well as Snow.
Use your friends if you want. But know that the more you pull them into this mess, the more you put their lives in danger. Rid Panem of Snow and Coin for all our sakes.
When this is complete, I shall reveal myself to you.
Signed,
A Friend
P.S. Watch your back better! Be more aware of your surroundings! Your kidnapping earlier today should have never happened if you, Cato, Finnick, and Leonitus stayed alert.
The 3 of them sat quietly for a few minutes, absorbing what they just learned. Finally Brutus spoke up. "I think we need to bring Leonitus in for questioning about his role in the elevator fiasco."
"Finnick as well," Cato says. "He and Leonitus have been spending time together lately." Boggs nods as he stands, then leaves the couple alone.
As soon as the door closes, Cato pulls Peeta onto his lap. "What are you thinking about Love?" he asks nuzzling his face in Peeta's neck.
Peeta pulls away slightly and turns enough to face Cato. "I'm a little freaked out that someone has been keeping tabs on me my entire life and I never knew it or noticed," Peeta tells him. He gestures to the photos. "Somebody has been taking pictures of me and I never noticed them doing it! For over 17 years this went on! No, it's still going on!" He says leaning and tapping on the photo of the smoke. "Who would do this? Why did they let my mother abuse me for 11 years? How did they get pictures of me with Finnick in Haymitch's house?" he asks knowing there really was no way Cato could answer. "I feel like my life has been some game, or maybe a joke, for someone. My life doesn't seem like it was really mine anymore…" Peeta trails off as tears begin to fall down his face. He wipes at them roughly. "And now I do nothing but cry!"
Cato raises his own hands and grabs Peeta's, gently pulling them down to his lap, before letting go and reaching up and wiping Peeta's tears away himself. He then pulls Peeta closer to his body and guides Peeta's head to his shoulder. "I have no idea what to tell you Peeta. I'm honestly having a hard time myself trying to wrap my head around the fact that someone could just sit there and watch you be hurt like that." He turns his head just enough to kiss Peeta's temple. "All I'm certain of is we have to talk to Leonitus and Finnick. Maybe they will be able to help."
Peeta simply nods and snuggles closer to Cato, tucking his head under Cato's chin. Suddenly he speaks. "I wonder how many other photos this creepy person has of me. Although, I have to say, some of these are quite good."
"How do you feel about us keeping the really good ones, especially of us together, and burn the others when this is all over?" Cato asks as he rubs Peeta's back with a gentle circling motion.
"Okay," Peeta agrees sniffling, a small smile gracing his face. "But who decides which ones we keep?"
"We both decide," Cato replies. "And if you don't mind, I'd really like the one of us on the beach from last night. I'd like to keep it with me at all times."
Before Cato can do anything, Peeta had leaned out of his grasp and grabbed 2 photos before getting comfortable again. Cato watches as Peeta looks at the picture he wanted, seeing that smile Peeta gets when something makes him happy. Peeta looks up at Cato, making eye contact, and places the requested picture in Cato's hand before leaning in to give Cato a quick peck on the lips. He then relaxes and looks at the picture he chose for himself. Cato looks at the picture in Peeta's hand and is instantly confused.
"Uh, Peeta," he begins not very sure of what Peeta could want with the picture he chose. "Why'd you choose that one?"
Peeta looks at the picture he chose. It's from the first day, when the guy from four stepped on the landmine and sent Cato and Gale airborne. He smiles his sad smile before sitting up a little straighter to answer. "I chose this picture of me crying with you seemingly dead in my arms to remind me that no matter how bad things seem at that particular moment, there was one that was worse. A moment in which I thought I had truly lost you. A moment before we had the chance to apologize to each other. A moment that I realized I might never have the chance to tell you I loved you." He puts his hand on Cato's cheek. "And that I love you more every day." He adds in a whisper.
"You will never lose me again if I have anything to say about it," Cato says his voice hitching slightly when he realizes that Peeta just revealed how much he truly loves him. "And the second we can, we are going to get married. Even if we are in the middle of the war." He tucks Peeta back into his body. "We are going to live long, happy lives together. I don't plan on ever letting you go."
Peeta scoffs. "As if I'd ever let you let me go," he says before turning his head and leaning in to kiss Cato yet again. It starts of sweet and simple but quickly becomes hot and heavy, filled with a passion unfelt by either before, as pent up emotions come to a head. Neither Cato nor Peeta hear the door open and people enter.
"As wonderful as it is that you two love each other, we really do have important business to attend to. Plus, no one wants a repeat of what nearly happened in the arena," Brutus says startling the pair apart, causing them both to turn red. "Well, that's a first. Cato can be embarrassed." Brutus teases. Peeta attempts to get off Cato's lap but Cato refuses to let him go, holding him tighter. Rolling his eyes, Peeta relaxes and understands immediately why Cato wouldn't let him go. He turns and looks at Cato, eye brow cocked and a smirk on his lips. Cato growls before they both realize that Finnick and Leonitus have sat across from them and have noticed the pictures on the table between them. Neither pair saying anything.
Finnick sees the pictures scattered on the table. He knew of the abuse Peeta had suffered from Peeta himself. Finnick never truly believed the abuse was as bad as Peeta told him. But to see the physical evidence was sickening. And to see how young he was when it first started was nauseating. He finally looks up at Peeta, tears in his eyes. "You were just a baby when it started," he says softly. "How? Why? When?" Finnick asked unable to complete a thought or sentence.
"I don't know Finn. It's not something I remember and I honestly don't want to," Peeta calmly replies.
Meanwhile, Leonitus had picked up the photo of him and Peeta in the elevator. He looks at it, staring at the expression on Peeta's face. The guilt begins to eat at him. "Forgive me Peeta," he gently begs never taking his eyes off the photo. "I was so intent on my mission; I never gave any thought of what I was really doing to you."
Peeta feels Cato stiffen underneath him and he rubs Cato's arm to try and calm him down. Peeta waited to see if Leonitus was going to say anything else before he said anything himself. But he was shocked when it was actually Finnick that spoke next.
"Maybe now would be a good time to tell your story Leon, the whole story," Finnick says as he reaches over and places his hand on Leonitus' leg. Cato and Peeta look at each other in shock and surprise at how close the other pair seem to be.
Leonitus sighs. "You're probably right Finn," he says looking Finnick in the eye. "I'm scared, stay with me?"
"I'm right here," Finnick replies squeezing Leonitus' leg.
It doesn't slip Peeta or Cato's attention that Finnick and Leonitus are using pet-like names with each other. They watch the interactions between the 2 and both realize that there is more than just friendship between the men in front of them. Peeta and Cato keep a blank face when Leonitus turns towards them.
"Finn's right, it's time you both know everything," he says nervously. "And we'll start with before the reaping of our games we played in." Leonitus leans down and begins looking at the pictures. He picks one up of Peeta as a toddler, the black and blue marks prominent on the head, legs, and arms of young Peeta's body. "My youngest sister had marks just like this at this age. She died a month before I decided to be in the games. It was the boyfriend of her mother that was abusing her. He was a very large man."
"Uh, was?" Peeta asks when Leonitus stayed silent for a moment.
"Yeah, I killed the guy," Leonitus replies. "The truth is I've never been much of a fighter. In fact, I truly hate it."
"But back home…" Cato says.
"All done for Grandpa Snow as well as my father," Leonitus says looking at Cato for a moment before returning his gaze to the photo in his hand. "The men in my family are fighters. Hell, even the females want to be fighters. But not me. I just wanted to be loved. I learned to fight to get the love I desired." He puts the picture back on the table and stares at the others for a minute before continuing. "I found out immediately after we were reaped that I have a daughter. Her name is Isobel Marie. A peacekeeper from Grandpa Snow's palace told me. As soon as I was on the train to the Capitol, he had her sent to District 13. He didn't tell Coin whose daughter she was until you guys blew the arena up."
"Why would Snow do that?" asks Cato.
"To make sure that I followed his plan," Leonitus replies. "To break up you and Peeta for good."
"Why would Snow care if we're together?" Peeta asks confused.
"Apparently you two were so well loved together that there was a petition going around the Capitol and some of the districts that should the 2 of you made the final two, you both would be declared Victors," He explains. "But there was more that Grandpa really didn't like. The petition also asked that the two of you be allowed to enjoy your victory, to be left alone, to not be like, uh…"
"Like me," Finnick finishes for him catching on.
"And me," Brutus adds. "Snow would never let that happen. Making money off the Victors is his sickness." Finnick nods in agreement.
"But only after taking his own pleasure in them first," Leonitus adds. "And there was no denying him either. To do so would only result in more pain." Brutus and Finnick both flinch, remembering.
"Yeah, we kind of heard about that already," Cato comments as he pulls Peeta closer.
"Did you know that he would have separated you anyway? And after he making you each watch as he used the other?" Leonitus asks snidely, falling back into his sarcastic ways. He feels Finnick nudge him and is immediately contrite, looking down into his lap. "I'm sorry that was uncalled for. The point is he never would've let you be together because he could make money off you. More for each of you separately. And if you didn't cooperate, he'd punish the other as well as your families." He adds apologetically.
"He could've killed mine and I wouldn't have cared," Peeta says as he snuggles into Cato. "Well, at the time that is."
"He would've gone after the Hawthorne's Peeta," Finnick says sadly. "Remember, you spoke at several different times as to how they are your family."
"Oh, my god," Peeta whispers shocked. Cato rubs his arms reassuringly.
"Anyway, Gramps told me that I had to break up the 2 of you if I ever wanted to see Isobel again. I was to get captured by someone, anyone from District 13 and begin to work on breaking you up," Leonitus explains.
"I still don't quite understand exactly why you have to break up me and Cato!" Peeta exclaims quietly.
Leonitus sighs sadly. "The Brute from 2 and the Baker from 12, if you hadn't met in the games there'd be no problem. Most of Panem loves the 2 of you together – a love story of epic proportions so to speak. Without doing anything but coming together, the citizens of Panem are inspired and are uniting against Grandpa," Leonitus explains looking directly at Peeta. "The 2 of you are considered the goodness and the light that will bring Panem out of the dark tyranny that has around for 75 years. You have inspired people to rise up and fight."
"So let me see if we all understand what's going on," Brutus says leaning forward in his seat. "Peeta and Cato meet and fall in love. Their love plays out in the games and the citizens of Panem love them, so much so that they wanted them to win together. But then District 13 rescued them from the arena, keeping Snow from being able to make money from them. Snow's so angry that he used your infant daughter to get you to break up the 'wonder couple' here."
"That about covers it in a nut shell," Leonitus replies nodding. Everyone quietly ruminate about what they just learned.
"The innocent one that you're protecting, that's your daughter, isn't it?" Finnick asks breaking the silence.
Leonitus can see the confused looks on Peeta and Cato's faces and ignores them. "Yes it is." They both are silent again.
"Alright, I'm confused again," Peeta says from Cato's lap, breaking the silence yet again.
Finnick looks at Leonitus who simply nods at him. Finnick turns and looks at Peeta and Cato. "I knew something weird was going on so I asked Leon about why he was doing this to you guys." Neither Peeta nor Cato comment on the name shortening. "He said he was doing it to protect an innocent. That innocent is the daughter he just told you about. I just confirmed the information I had with what he told you."
"And how long ago did you learn about the innocent?" Brutus asks hastily.
"Not long at all actually," Finnick admits turning towards Brutus. "Leon told me rather recently and I had promised not to repeat it."
"If it makes things any better, Finn did try to convince me to tell you all sooner what was going on," Leon admits looking down at the ground. "He thought that we could come up with a plan all together to get my daughter back and not hurt the two of you Peeta and Cato."
"Where's the innocents mother?" Cato asks.
"She has a name guys. It's Isobel," Peeta says.
"She's dead. Killed by Snow to get to Isobel," Leonitus answers ignoring Peeta, his head hanging down in shame and sadness.
"So, to get to your daughter, you and Peeta have to become a couple?" asks Brutus.
"But I love Cato!" Peeta says as Cato tightens his arms around Peeta.
"And I have feelings for Finn!" Leonitus cries, tears in his eyes. He turns and faces Finnick. "I get all confused around you but I'm still falling for you – hard."
Finnick smiles gently at Leonitus before he reaches over and grabs his hands. "That's good to know because I think I'm falling for you too."
"While I'm happy for the 2 of you, there's still the matter of Isobel," Cato says glancing over to Peeta. "We need to figure how to get her back without involving my fiancé."
"I think you should know that I really would like to call off the 2 Suitor Rule," Leonitus says, his eyes still on Finnick.
"Yeah, well that's not going to happen!" Peeta states firmly.
"And why the hell not?!" demands Cato.
"Isobel," is all Peeta says as he snuggles in Cato's lap. He knows that Cato will understand.
"What are you thinking Peeta?" asks Brutus interested in what Peeta is thinking.
"Just that Cato and I will break up publically and I become Leonitus' fiancé," Peeta explains. He feels Cato tense under him but has faith Cato will see that Peeta's plan can work.
"You do realize you will have to marry him within 30 days if we go through with this?" Cato asks burying his face into Peeta's shoulder, desperation and fear in his voice.
Peeta turns so that he is facing Cato. "It would be a marriage in name only," he says making Cato look at him, letting him see the love in his eyes.
"Grandpa Snow will want some sort of verification that we, uh…" Leonitus tries to speak.
"Consummate the marriage," Brutus finishes for Leonitus. "Perverted bastard will probably want video footage of the wedding night to get off to."
"No! Not going to happen!" Cato roars, trying to stand up despite Peeta being in his lap. Peeta reaches up and begins to stroke Cato's face with his fingers. Cato calms slightly. "I'm truly sorry about your daughter Leonitus, but I refuse to let Peeta go through with the plan if Snow needs proof of you two… Ugh! I don't want to say it let alone even think about it."
"Can I finish with my idea now?" Peeta gently says after Cato's little speech.
"There's more?" asks a confused and slightly upset Finnick.
"Yeah, obviously," Peeta says rolling his eyes. "Cato and I will stage our break-up. BUT, not until we reach the Capitol. Hopefully it won't take more than 30 days to bring down Snow." He gives the others time to absorb what he said.
"It could work," Brutus says finally. "We may need to bring Boggs in on the plan as well though."
"Why?" Peeta asks. "Too many people that know it's all fake, staged, not real, whatever, as it is! It will make it easier for Snow to find out that it's fake."
"I understand what you're saying Peeta," Brutus says. "But Boggs can tell us when and how we are going after Snow."
"And we should let him know so he can let us know when our 'break-up' day will be," Cato says as he begins to truly understand the full plan in its entirety. "I'm still not comfortable with the plan though. I don't want to lose the one I love," he adds looking Peeta in the eyes.
"That makes two of us," Finnick says quietly. He finally has someone that isn't with someone else or out of their mind crazy. And now they want his someone to fake a relationship with someone else – Peeta, his ex-boyfriend, ex-lover – who is now in love with Cato. Would anything ever work out in his favor in his own love life?
Unbeknownst to him, the others did hear him. As Finnick was feeling sorry for himself, he missed the reactions of the other 4 in the room. Leonitus lets a small smile show through. He has just heard more proof that Finnick seriously does care for him. Brutus' jaw dropped wide open and hung that way. He had thought there was more going on than just a friendship between the two. But to hear that there were actual feelings involved was a total shocker. Cato, one of the masterminds of having Finnick befriend Leonitus, was secretly thrilled that Finnick and Leonitus were developing feeling for one another. It kept them away from his Peeta. Peeta just sat there. He wasn't really sure how he felt about Finnick and Leonitus becoming a couple. On the one hand, it keeps the pair out of his hair and that means Cato can relax. On the other hand, he doesn't trust Leonitus and he has barely begun to trust in Finnick again.
"Cato, I need to tell Leon the truth," Finnick says suddenly, pulling everyone out of their own thoughts. "I've had plenty of chances to have a happily ever after with someone and blew them. I let Annie down when I couldn't stand to be around her much and I hurt Peeta in one of the worst ways imaginable. I don't want to be that man anymore. I can't be that man anymore." Finn looks at Peeta. "I am so sorry for all the pain I ever caused you. I want you to know that I am so happy that you have found Cato. You have found that special someone to love you the way I thought I could." Finnick turns his eyes to Cato, pleading with them before looking at Leonitus. "I want us to start a relationship. But I want us to start it off right with no secrets and no lies."
Cato sees the loving look Finnick is giving Leonitus as he speaks. He glances at Peeta and know what needs to be done. "I'll do it," he says when Finnick finishes. He looks directly at Leonitus. "Gale, Clove, and I convinced Finnick into befriending you in the hopes that you would give up on Peeta," Cato admits before he casts his eyes down to the ground.
"You used Finn?" Peeta asks confused. "Gale and Clove too?"
"No!" Cato replies hastily. "Well, yes, but not like that!"
Peeta jumps off Cato's lap and begins to pace. "Why would you use Finn like that?!"
Finnick jumps up. "Peeta, it's okay," he says. "I knew what I was getting into when I agreed with them." He goes and grabs Peeta by the shoulders to stop his pacing. "I had agreed to do it to make up for the hurt I caused you. I agreed because I wanted to help you and Cato." He turns his attention to Leonitus. "But the more time I spent with Leon, the more I actually wanted to be with him." He sees Leonitus look at him. "He's not the guy he showed to Panem, Peeta. In fact, the guy you saw – we saw – on the date is the real Leon. He's kind, caring, loving, funny,…" He lets go of Peeta and just stares at Leonitus who is stunned.
"Peeta," Brutus calls out. "While I think you have every reason to be upset, I also think you are missing the bigger picture."
"No I'm not," Peeta huffs. "Finn and uh, Leon, have feelings for one another and Cato, Clove, and Gale helped by pushing Finn on him, so to speak, to be together."
"You and Cato have the chance to be together now," Leon says quietly. "That was the point."
"And I do appreciate that," Peeta says as he walks over and squats in front of Leonitus. "But I refuse to forget that there is someone else that needs me, your daughter Isobel."
Leonitus looks Peeta in the eye. "Why? Why are you so willing to help me after everything I've done to you?"
Peeta turns and grabs the photo of him at age 11, broken, bloody, near death. "This is what my own mother did to me." He turns and grabs more of the pictures of him with bruises, bandages, and casts. All of them when he was very young. He shows them to Leonitus as he speaks. "Every bruise, every broken bone, every drop of blood caused by my own mother, the woman who gave birth to me!" He tosses the pictures on the ground behind him. "I swore after Gale and his family took me in that I would never let another child be treated like I was if I could help it! Isobel is in danger of this – of looking like this," he finishes as he lifts one last picture. It's Peeta as an infant, bruised and bloody, tears running down his chubby, baby cheeks. "Or worse, dead," he adds.
Leonitus gasps then nods, finally and reluctantly, accepting Peeta's help.
"Hey, I think Finnick and I should have a say in this!" Cato demands. "Maybe even Gale and Clove too!"
"No! I will not endanger them or our families and friends any more than they already are!" Peeta says standing up, voice rising with anger. "You saw the letters!"
"Whoa! Wait a minute! There were letters?!" Finnick asks.
"Huh?" Peeta mutters to Finnick, sidetracked by his thoughts. "Uh yeah, there were 2 letters with these pictures." Peeta waves his hand over the table as he speaks. His mind is still on Cato suggesting bringing their friends and family into the troubles with Leonitus.
Finnick looks down at the table Peeta gestured to and notices the pictures of Peeta, Annie, and himself. His eyes immediately shoot to Cato filled with fear and sadness. Cato saw Finnick looking at the pictures and then him and gives Finnick a reassuring smile. "It's all in the past now my…friend." Finnick can't keep the look of shock off his face at the word. "I know you're falling for Leonitus. I suggest taking the photos that you two are in with Peeta and burn them. Make a fresh start so to speak."
"Thank you Cato," Finnick says. "For everything."
Peeta hears Finnick thanking Cato and finds himself very confused. "Hey, what's going on?" he asks as he watches Cato handing Finnick some pictures.
"The 5 of us can get together again later to discuss the plan," Cato says to Finnick, ignoring Peeta's question for the time being. "You and Leonitus seem to have things of your own to discuss."
Finnick stands and puts the pictures in his pocket before turning to look at Leonitus. "Yeah, I think you're right Cato. We definitely need to talk." Finnick reaches a hand down to Leon to help him up. Their hands remained locked entwined as they leave the room together, Leonitus with a slight blush.
"They actually look really good together," Brutus comments after the door closes behind them.
"I am so confused," Peeta admits as he sits down next to Cato. "Why did they just leave? They didn't even say good night to us."
Cato chuckles. "Love, they left because they need to talk about a few things, including the fact that they want to be a couple."
"Oh," Peeta says in understanding. He leans against Cato's side. "So, why did you give them some pictures if they're going to talk? Especially pictures of me?"
"They're taking those pictures to burn them. I thought it would help them get a fresh start," Cato replies kissing Peeta on the temple.
"Peeta, why don't you go out and spend some time with your family," Brutus suggests. "They were really worried about you when you were out and you've been with Cato since your return."
"Out? Is that a new word for kidnapped now?" Peeta asks with a smile. He stands and looks down at Cato with love filled eyes. "Try not to miss me too much. And don't worry about Finnick, Leonitus, and me so much. I am yours and you are mine. Soon we'll be in the Capitol and Snow will be killed. Then you and I will get our forever."
Cato looks up as Peeta speaks. He smiles. "Thank you Love."
Peeta smiles back. "I didn't do anything."
"You may think that, but trust me, you do deserve my thanks," Cato says rather cryptically. "Now, go and be with your brothers, sister, and Gale. I'll clean up this mess," he adds gesturing to the pictures on the table. "I'll join you and your family shortly."
"Just go ahead and shove them back in that envelope. We can burn the bad ones together later," Peeta says before leaning down to kiss Cato. The kiss was chaste and Peeta leaves.
"Do you have that list for me?" Brutus asks once Peeta's gone.
"Yeah, here you go," Cato says standing and pulling a sheet of paper out of his pocket. He hands it over.
Brutus looks the list over. "Give me about 30 minutes or so to gather these items. I'll take them up and hide them in the closet in the room," he says, standing and folding the paper and putting it in his own pocket. "Then come to the room about 15 to 20 minutes after Peeta goes to bed. I'll convince him to take a shower so that you can sneak in."
"Thanks you Brutus," Cato says as Brutus walks to the door. Brutus nods and leaves the room. Cato bends down and gathers all the photos and, as Peeta suggested, shoved them back into the envelope. He then takes the envelope and decides to hide it in his bag. He leaves the room and takes the envelope to the room he's staying in, placing it in his bag, under his underwear. He leaves the room to go join Peeta and his friends. As he walks past a closed bedroom door, he hears a faint moan and thinks 'Go Finnick and Leonitus'. He quickly heads down the stairs. He realizes he may have to keep the others downstairs for a little while.
1 hour later
"He just climbed into the shower," Brutus tells him (Cato). "I hid the items you requested in the closet. Don't forget that I will be back an hour before everyone else wakes so you two don't get in trouble."
"Thanks Brutus. We owe you one," Cato replies as Brutus begins to close the door. He rushes over to the closet and pulls out the bag of requested items. Inside was a bottle of sparkling cider, 2 flutes, a bowl of chocolate covered strawberries, a can of whipped topping, a bag of rose petals, and several candles. Cato hurried and set the candles up and lit them before going over to the bed and spreading some of the rose petals on the bed before using the remaining to make a trail from the bathroom to the bed. Cato heard the water shut off and knew time was running out to surprise Peeta. He quickly goes over to the bed and sets the flutes on the nightstand next to the strawberries and whipped topping. He pours some cider into each flute before setting the bottle down. He strips down to his boxers, gets on the bed and relaxes against the headboard, and waits for the love of his life to come out.
When Peeta opens the bathroom door, he is surprised by the soft flickering glow that greets him. He follows the rose petal path, looks at the bed, and is shocked to see Cato there.
"What are you doing?" he asks as he walks over. "We could get in so much trouble." he adds as he sits down next to Cato. He leans over and snatches a strawberry from the bowl. Cato watches as Peeta eats the strawberry before he speaks.
"Brutus is giving us time together," Cato comments as he hands Peeta a flute. "He will be back here before anyone wakes up. Tonight is for you my love, whatever you wish."
Peeta takes a sip of his drink before setting it down on the ground. He takes his t-shirt off, throws it across the room, crawls onto Cato's lap, and straddles him. He takes Cato's drink and sets it on the nightstand before grabbing another strawberry and looking at him.
"What I wish for right now is to feel your lips upon mine," Peeta whispers seductively before putting the strawberry between his teeth and leaning down. Cato, understanding exactly what Peeta was doing, quickly leans up and bites the strawberry. Moments later Cato's tongue was licking at Peeta's lips, tasting the chocolate and strawberry juice. To Cato, there was nothing better. To Peeta, he felt whole again just being this close to Cato. Peeta wasted no time in taking over, demanding and dominating the kiss. Cato let's Peeta take the lead, puts his hands on Peeta's knees, and just enjoys the feel of his Peeta's lips on his own. It feels like forever since he last felt the petal soft lips of Peeta's on his own. And he's missed the way Peeta's hands slide up and down his chest and abs.
Peeta's lips move from Cato's lips, kissing their way along the jawline, down Cato's neck, towards his collarbone. But what Cato doesn't notice as he delights in the feeling of Peeta's lips is Peeta grabbing the can of whipped topping. In fact, it's not until he feels the cold, creamy goodness on his nipples that he even remembers that it was there. Before he knows it, Peeta is sucking the creamy goodness off him, teasing Cato's nipples relentlessly causing a jolt of lust to his groin and a moan to escape his lips. Cato wants so bad to reach up, grab Peeta by the hips, flip them so Peeta is under him. Then he'd remove both their boxers and make love to Peeta until Brutus came back in the morning. But this night, this night is for Peeta, to let him feel in control of his life again.
Peeta knew what Cato was doing and loved him even more for it. But what Cato didn't know was that Peeta was looking forward to Cato pounding him into the mattress – the gentle love making could come later. He sits up and looks down into Cato's lust filled eyes. "I love you. And I appreciate what you are doing for me," he begins as he scoots down Cato's legs, pulling his boxers down as well stopping at mid-thigh. "But as you're giving me all the control…"Peeta says slowly as he completely removes Cato's boxers as well as his own. He reaches over to the nightstand and grabs the lube out of the drawer.
"How did you know that was there?" Cato asks suspiciously.
"Honestly, I snooped through the drawers the first night here. I used the excuse I was looking for aspirin when Finnick walked in," Peeta replied shrugging. He opens the tube and squirts some on his hand. He sets the tube down saying, "I'll replace it later." He quickly slicks Cato's shaft before lining himself up and quickly sitting on the hard member. "We can take it slow later," he says as he lifts his hips. He slams himself down. He repeats the movements as Cato grabs his hips and helps him set a rhythm. It doesn't take long for both to be panting.
"God Peeta! You're so tight!" Cato moans.
"I want it harder, faster," Peeta grunts out.
Cato hears Peeta and wastes no time pulling out of Peeta before flipping him over, crawling in between his legs, and roughly shoving himself back into the tight hole causing Peeta to moan.
"Ugh, YES!" Peeta yells. "Harder! Faster!" he orders. Cato complies and as he repeatedly hits Peeta's prostate, begins to feel the telltale signs of his own release. He grabs Peeta's shaft and begins to stroke in time with his movements.
"Peeta, I'm ready," Cato grunts not changing his pace minute later.
"Me too," Peeta moans.
A few more strokes and both release together. Cato pulls out and lays down next to Peeta. Peeta rolls and snuggles himself into Cato's side. Cato wraps his arms around Peeta.
"Sorry about that Cato," Peeta says contrite. "I couldn't wait."
Cato reaches for Peeta's chin, lifting it gently with his fingertips, making Peeta look at him. "Never apologize for that again Peeta. And I'll be honest, I wanted it just as much as you did." He then leans in and gives Peeta a kiss.
"Okay, but I really am sorry about the strawberries," Peeta says smiling.
"What?" Cato asks confused.
"When you flipped me over, I hit the bowl and kind of sent the strawberries flying. I hope the chocolate doesn't stain," Peeta replies as he runs his hands slowly up and down Cato's torso. "I think the can of topping is still around here somewhere though…" he adds as he moves his head just enough to flick his tongue over Cato's already sensitive nipple.
"Ready for round two already Love?" Cato teases before pulling Peeta on top of him. "And this time I want to take things nice and slow."
The rest of the night was filled with love making, animalistic sex, and quiet conversation. Both were still awake, having just finished one last quickie in the shower, when they heard a knock on the door. Cato gives Peeta one last, toe curling kiss before opening the door and revealing Brutus.
"Did you two get any sleep?" Brutus asks as he walks in. He notes that the bedding has been changed.
Peeta and Cato share a look. "No, but we can nap on the way to District 2," Cato answers before going out the door.
Peeta and Brutus pack Peeta's bags for his trip. Peeta thanked Brutus for his help and took his bags down to the living room before heading into the kitchen to get some breakfast. In the dining room, he sits between Cato and Beetee. They quickly eat before joining Commander Paylor in the entry way. Soon they were off to District 2.
And a tragedy just waiting to happen.
Bonus
Finnick pulls Leonitus out of the room and up the stairs to an empty, unused bedroom. Neither speaks along the way, each caught up in their own thoughts. Once it the room, Finnick locks the door. It takes a moment before Leonitus realizes they're in a room he's not seen before.
"Where are we?" he asks.
Finnick smiles. "Yet another bedroom. And don't worry, I spoke to Boggs earlier to make sure I could bring you up here."
"Why?" Leonitus asks as he looks around. Finnick walks over to him and makes sure he has Leonitus' attention. "Because I was going to confess." Finnick grabs Leonitus' hand and pulls him to a love seat at the end of the king size bed. They sit. "I was going to tell you about Cato, Clove, and Gale coming to me, asking for my help in getting you to leave Peeta alone. And I was going to confess that in the short time we've been spending together, getting to know each other, that I am beginning to fall for you."
"That's a lot of confessing," Leonitus teases. "Maybe I should confess as well. Like you I am a single parent. But I have only ever held my child once – when I agreed to help Coin back in District 13." He sits back and continues. "I find Peeta to be charming as well as good looking. I was attracted to him when I saw him during the reaping. Seeing him in person only reinforced that attraction. But once in the arena, I realized I was only attracted to him enough to have a couple of tumbles before I would have to kill him." He turns to look at Finnick. "And I find myself with real feelings towards you as well. I can't honestly call it love, but I can see myself falling in love with you eventually."
Finnick gives Leonitus a small but genuine smile before slowly leaning in and kissing the younger man. Soon the kiss becomes more intense. Finnick licks Leonitus' lips, asking for entrance which is immediately granted. Soon their tongues alternate between exploration and domination. Finnick eventually wins the domination battle but Leonitus doesn't care. He is currently enjoying the feel of Finnick's lips as he kisses his way down Leonitus' jawline, moving towards his ear where a quick nip to the lobe causes a moan. As Finnick kisses his way down Leonitus' neck to the collarbone, he hits a spot that causes the most erotic sounding moan he's ever heard. He repeatedly attacks that spot.
Neither man is aware when it happened, but both were a little surprised to find themselves on the bed, shirtless. But that didn't slow them down. No, in fact, it encourages them to explore more and soon both were in their boxer briefs – Finnick's a baby blue and Leonitus' green.
"Finn?" Leonitus questions as Finnick is kissing his way down and across Leonitus' chest.
"Yes Leon," Finnick replies between kisses. He flicks his tongue over the left nipple.
"Um, I uh, I've never bottomed before, have you?" Leonitus asks timidly.
Finnick looks at Leonitus in shock. "You've never bottomed?" he asks. Leon shakes his head. "Oh," Finnick says unsure of what to do now. They stay like that for a few moments before either of them speaks.
"Finn, you never answered my question. Have you ever bottomed before?" Leonitus asks again. He's now worried that he's upset Finnick.
"Once," Finnick finally says in a near whisper. "And it was a horrible experience."
"It was Grandpa Snow, wasn't it?" Leonitus asks but certain he already knows the answer. He takes Finnick's hand as Finnick only nods slowly. He pulls Finnick up and they lay facing each other. Leonitus can see the sadness in Finnick's eyes. "I'm sorry your first and only experience was horrible. And I'm sorry I ruined the mood," he says reaching up to caress Finnick's cheek.
"You didn't ruin anything," Finnick says as he gestures to the very large bulge in his briefs. "But maybe we should discuss who will be bottom when we do finally get around to having sex."
"I'll bottom," Leonitus says quietly. "Anyone else and I wouldn't even consider it. But for you, I'm willing to do it," he adds looking into Finnick's eyes.
"Are you sure?" Finnick asks. He just wants Leon to be certain of his choice. Maybe someday he will return the favor, but only for his Leon.
"More than you'll ever know," Leonitus replies licking his lips. "Make love to me Finn."
Needing no more encouragement, Finnick resumes his exploration of Leonitus' body with his lips and tongue. He starts at the lips again and trails his way back to where he left off moments ago. He teases Leonitus' nipples until they are both hard little nubs before kissing his way down his abs, stopping at the waistband of Leon's underwear. Dipping his fingers under the waistband, Finnick looks up at Leonitus' face. Leonitus just nods slightly and Finnick pulls the remaining garment off. As he lies there naked, he watches as Finnick's eyes roam over his body.
"Finn, as much as I love the way you're looking at me, we only have a couple hours before we have to leave," He says as he sits up and reaches for Finnick's underwear. "At least let me enjoy the view as well." Finnick sits up on his knees and allows Leonitus to pull down his remaining garment to his knees. Finnick pushes Leonitus so he's lying down again before completely removing the underwear and throwing them over his shoulder. He reaches out and grabs Leonitus' manhood and gives a slow stroke from root to tip. He then leans down and licks from base to tip a couple times before sucking the head into his mouth. Leonitus' eyes roll back as Finnick slowly and torturously slides his mouth up and down, never having had a blow job as good as the one that Finnick was giving him now. "F-Finn, st-stop! I-I'm about t-to cum," he stutters. Finnick doesn't stop. In fact, he picks up the pace as he watches Leon writhe in pleasure. Leonitus suddenly moans loud as he releases in Finnick's mouth. Finnick swallows every bit before reaching over to the nightstand and grabbing a bottle of lube.
As Leonitus recovers, Finnick squeezes the lube on his fingers before rubbing them on Leon's hole. "Relax baby, I need to stretch you." Leonitus just nods. Finnick leans down to kiss him. As he kisses him, he gently inserts the first finger. Finnick slowly starts to move the finger in and out while trying to keep Leonitus distracted. He kisses his way to Leonitus' spot and as he sucks on it, he pushes in a second finger. Finnick takes the time to find Leonitus' prostate and knows he found it when Leonitus moans and begs.
"Right there Finn! Again please!" Leonitus begs.
Finnick complies, hitting the spot a couple more times before leaning down and taking Leonitus' once again hard cock in his mouth. As he sucks, he gently adds the third and final finger, stretching Leonitus a little more. A few more thrusts and rubs against the prostate and Finnick's sure Leonitus is ready. He slowly withdraws his fingers and hears Leonitus whimper. He grabs the lube again and slathers his cock.
"Are you ready baby?" Finnick asks as he lines himself with Leonitus' hole. Leonitus nods and Finnick slowly and steadily pushes in until he's all the way in. He waits for Leonitus to let him know it's okay to move. He gets it a lot sooner than he expected.
"Damn it Finnick! Move!" Leonitus demands. Finnick leans down, kisses Leon before slowly moving his hips. But Leonitus has other ideas and begins to move his own hips. "Faster! Harder!" Leonitus pants moments later. Finnick begins to slam in and out. He knows he found Leonitus' spot when he hears, "Again! Right there!" It doesn't take long before Leonitus is ready.
"Cum for me Leon," Finnick whispers in his ear as he grabs Leonitus' cock and begins to pump it in time with his movements. That was all it took. For both of them. As Leonitus releases all over their chests and abs, Finnick releases inside Leonitus. After a few moments, Finnick pulls out and lays down next to Leonitus. Leonitus snuggles into Finnick's side as Finnick wraps his arms around him.
"That was intense," Leonitus says.
"Best I've ever had," Finnick replies.
"Give me a few minutes and I'll be ready for round two," Leonitus tells the older man. "If you're up for it."
Finnick tilts his head down to look at Leonitus. "Are you calling me old?"
"No, it's just that I would definitely like another round when you're ready."
Finnick pulls Leonitus on top of him. "Would you like to try a new position?" he asks seductively.
Leonitus leans down and kisses Finnick. "Let's see how many we can do before we have to leave for that mission," he says against Finnick's lips.
And as with Peeta and Cato, they got no sleep that night. Before they had to head down, Finnick started a fire in the fireplace and they burned the pictures that Cato had given them. Finnick got the closure he needed from Peeta and Leonitus felt better about himself. The future was open for the both of them.
But in District 2, things were more dangerous than it seemed…
Okay. Honestly, I had this chapter hand written since December 2013. But I wasn't happy with it. I walked away from it, hoping that some time away would inspire me. But every time I came back, I would tweak and fiddle with it but it still wasn't what I was hoping for. Once I got to this version, I decided to write the next chapter. That one went much better and I really like it more than this one. The following chapter is still in the works. I do have a section done, but I'm not sure where it will fit in the scheme of things. I will try to get the next chapter up in the next 2 weeks but no promises – I have 2 nieces with birthdays coming up…
