Song: Any more fight music you have (More Dragon Training!)
Disclaimer. I don't own HTTYD
The next few days were a blur. Hiccup tried and failed to get Toothless to fly again. But each time, something would be changed that improved their flying a bit more. Toothless eventually had to wear a saddle - which he protested quite a lot - but it helped to control the contraption, which I now knew was an artificial tail fin. Slowly but surely, they started to work together as a team in order to fly better.
Finally, the next day of Dragon Training was upon us. Jack and I rendezvoused with the other teens at the arena, where there was a green fog-like smoke covering almost the entire area. On the cobbled floor lay nine buckets, filled to the brim with water, which we all picked up. Gobber had us divide into pairs, except for Ripper, Jack, and I, which were put into one group of three. All of us began to work our way into the mist, with Gobber beginning his daily lecture. "Today is about teamwork. Work together, and you might survive." The doors opening could be heard by everyone, followed by an eerie quiet that got everyone on edge. The three of us crept forwards, straight into the belly of the beast. "Now, a wet dragon head can't light its fire. The Hideous Zippleback is extra tricky. One head spews gas, while the other ignites it. Your job is to know which is which," Gobber lectured.
Our group of three kept moving through the mist, creating a circle, with each of us facing out in a different direction. I heard Hiccup yelling something, probably to Fishlegs, which was his partner. Nobody could tell what he said, though, because the fog was so thick that it impaired hearing. Suddenly, something slithered past us, a black silhouette easily visible through the murk. Thankfully, it didn't attack us, probably because it was likely stalking a group that made more noise. A few seconds of tense silence followed, before a group emptied their buckets, the splashing easily heard on the stone. Yells followed from what were obviously the two girls of the group, but once again, no one could tell what they were saying. Then, the sounds of a scuffle quickly emerged, with Tuffnut and Ruffnut yelling and running, while Snotlout and Astrid made no sounds. I began to get nervous. This dragon wasn't a mindless beast. It was a true predator, stalking its prey and waiting for the moment to strike. And when it did, it was quick and devastating. Jack, who was currently at the head on the group, called for a halt. Our circle came to a stop, trying to peer through the mist. Suddenly, a head poked through the fog, next to Ripper.
It was a sickly green color, with teeth that were oversized and stuck out of its jaw. Its yellow eyes looked particularly devilish, and they squinted upon seeing its prize. It was time for the clash. Ripper spun and threw his bucket straight on top of the head, dousing it completely. We started to cheer, at least, until the head opened and… started spewing gas. "Um, guys…" Ripper said, a pinch of nervousness in his voice.
"Retreat!" Jack commanded. We all dropped our buckets and ran like hell. Running blindly through the mist, we all got split from each other. 'Uh oh. Now, the hunt is on.' I thought. A shout that I knew to be Ripper sounded through the arena, before a hard thud was heard, probably Ripper falling over. Suddenly, in my panicked trot, I ran into someone - hard. Looking up, I saw Fishlegs, who had dropped his bucket when I slammed into him. Just to my luck, the two heads both appeared out of the fog in front of us. Hiccup was the only one with water in it, but as one of the heads began spewing gas again, he had his target. He hurled his water with the most effort he could mount.
It fell to the ground in about two feet, plenty far away from its target.
The three of us let out a collective groan, with Fishlegs being the wisest of us and fleeing. Hiccup and I stood there, but Hiccup suddenly opened his vest, as I watched. The Zippleback suddenly became frightened, moving away from us, shying back towards its cage. Hiccup advanced, pressing the Zippleback back. Finally, he herded it into its cage, before pulling out an eel out of his vest and throwing it in.
'So that's what was scaring it. Duly noted,' I thought as Hiccup walked past us. Everyone, bar me, was staring at Hiccup in shock, as he started to back away from everyone. "Okay! So, are we done, 'cause I've got some things I need to do…" He turned around and jogged out of the doors. The rest of us stood there for a minute thinking, before slowly beginning to file out of the arena, everyone trudging back to their homes in the silence of thought. I knew Hiccup was back at the cove, but I decided to go back to the house and play with my newest trinket.
Finally reaching our house, I decided that that would have to wait, as the house was now just too bad too live in safely. Repair work was now in order. Trekking back down the hill to the carpenter, I managed to barter a few boards with some iron that I stole from Gobber's workshop, along with a few eggs from his new chicken. Sneaking by Gobber's workshop to also steal some nails and a hammer, I was all set.
Luckily, since my father was drunk out the ass usually, I had learned how to do decent house repair. Sweating hard in the hot midday sun, I grabbed a ladder that we had found abandoned inside the house, and got to work, nailing up boards to bolster the integrity of the structure. After a good few hours of hard, sweaty work, it was done. It still needed a paint job, but at least it was finished.
"Well, that's done," I said with pride as I looked over my work. Going inside, I sat down and pulled out my iPhone again. Opening it, I quickly realized that it would be quite prudent not to waste its battery. I just plugged the headphones back in and relaxed as the music started playing. The door opened slightly, and I saw Jack walk through, also sweaty and covered in oil and grease, obviously from working on Thunder. He nodded in acknowledgement before heading upstairs to his room. Being home, in this chair, felt so good.
And then, I realized what I had just thought.
Home. And I meant it.
I was home.
AN: There it is! Sadly, though, school's about to start, so expect the frequency of updates to drop. Being a freshie in high school is hard!
