The First Time
She went to his office after a shift
He'd finally tied himself long enough to his desk; in the office he seldom visited; to sign off on the pile of reports Ensign Rand left for him on a daily basis. Just as he squared away the reports for the previous Tuesday, the ping at his door went off. Assuming it was his yeoman showing up early to pester him some more, he unlocked the door from his desk and opened up the folder containing the reports from Wednesday.
"I just finished Tuesday's reports, give me another six hours and I might have Wednesday's for you." He informed without glancing up.
"Still terrible with work orders? I would have thought you got the hang of it by now."
He should have known as soon as she entered that she wasn't Rand. Giving that he hadn't slept in nearly forty-eight hours, however, he wasn't surprised at such a mistake. Placing the PADD back onto the desk, Kirk leaned back in his chair and gazed upon Laxely as she fell into the seat across the desk from him. She crossed her legs, slouched in the seat and linked her fingers over her stomach. She looked upon him with a weary smile. He figured she must have just finished a long shift. It wasn't as if he had her schedule memorized though.
"I'll take ailing civilizations and a good chess match over work orders any day." He sighed, resting his hands back behind his head.
Laxely hummed in response. The tip of her planted boot swiveled her seat from side to side.
"I had to break up a fight today." She informed, eyes downcast.
Kirk blinked. "Who?"
"Ensigns Becket and Kim."
At his continued silence, she planted her heel back down to stop swiveling. She tilted her head up at him and studied his perplexed face.
"Do you ever listen to Janice when she talks to you?"
That snapped Kirk from his thoughts right away.
"On a first-name basis with her, are you?" He quirked an eyebrow.
She didn't move. "She is a friend."
When he merely smiled, Laxely sighed and resumed swaying. "Caroline Becket and Lucy Kim have a strained relationship. They requested separate schedules to avoid any conflict. But, neither wanted to post a formal complaint. Janice said she would talk with you."
"Why do they have a strained relationship?" He asked, unable to connect one point to the other. He dragged his hands over his eyes, clearly blaming lack of sleep for this development as well.
Laxely averted her gaze to the right as her chair swayed to the left.
"Kim caught Becket with a former lover."
Kirk dropped his hands loudly to the desk, revealing the effortful widening of his eyes and the ruffled hair over his forehead. Laxely cracked a smile.
"Okay," He breathed, pulling another PADD in front of him. "I'll go ahead and make a note of that."
"You can if you want."
He stopped. Raised his eyebrows.
Laxely picked up her toes and dragged her heel to slowly bring her chair to a stop. "I originally came to tell you I took care of it. Talked with them and Ensign Tordu, who is willing to swap schedules with Becket. There shouldn't be any more trouble from those two, professionally at least."
Kirk smiled tiredly and crossed his arms on the desk. "What would I do without you?"
Holding his gaze evenly, Sonja took a beat to consider the question. "Right now, you would go insane. Come on, I'm getting you a treat for finishing last week's reports."
"You make it sound like I'm a dog." Kirk protested as he stood. A groan escaped him as his muscles stretched for the first time in hours.
Sonja laughed as she stood as well. "You are a dog."
He stumbled his way around his desk, his legs stiff and his back aching. She waited for him to join her side, but as soon as he did, he threw an arm over her shoulders and leaned heavily on her (to which she objected loudly).
"What have you been doing this whole time? Binge eating?" She grunted, trying not to fall under the weight of him.
He smiled down at her, knowing in that moment how much he had missed her the year she'd been away.
"No more than you have." He answered instead.
She whacked his stomach and nearly dropped him there on the floor had he not clung on for dear life.
A/N: This one was hard to title. Just because I couldn't quite figure out what this was a first of! I think this works-I hope this works.
I am working on those requested firsts! They're really good ones, please keep them coming! I love hearing your feedback!
