Emily and Paige walked in to The Grill, hand in hand. Spencer and Toby had already arrived and grabbed a table, waving the two over to join them. Paige paused a moment and let go of Emily's hand.
"Paige, what's wrong?" Emily asked. Paige shrugged and swallowed hard.
"Sorry, just nervous, I guess. I've never been..."
"On a double date before?"
"Well, yeah, I mean I guess I have. But with boys."
Emily chuckled. "Seriously? It's the exact same thing. Besides, Toby's a boy. It's going to be fine, come on."
Paige hadn't meant that things were different because Emily was a girl. It was because Emily was... Emily. An amazing, wonderful and perfect girl. One that Paige couldn't imagine disappointing. Paige looked at Emily, nodded and took her hand once again.
"Hey, we ordered some appetizers. Hope you like spinach dip and nachos," Spencer said as they approached. Toby smiled and extended a hand to shake Paige's.
"Hey, don't think we've met officially yet. I'm Toby."
Paige smiled and took his hand. "Paige. Nice to meet you."
The four sat down at the table and started talking about school and sports. Paige and Spencer talked about their last season of field hockey while Toby and Emily listened. Emily couldn't help but smile when she looked at Paige, her face lit up by her passion for athletics.
They ate and chatted, laughed and got to know one another. Toby and Paige made plans to hang out the following weekend, going to an indoor rock climbing centre. Before they knew it, it was dark out and Emily's mom had already called her twice.
"See you two at school tomorrow. Em, text me when you get home safe, okay?" Spencer said, hugging her friend and hugging Paige.
Paige smiled and squeezed Emily's hand as the two walked down the sidewalk.
"That wasn't so bad, eh?" Emily asked.
Paige shook her head and smiled again. "That was really fun, Em. I like your friends a lot."
Emily smiled as Paige lowered her head. She stopped and lifted the girl's chin with her index finger. "I like you a lot." Paige blushed and tried to look away but Emily wouldn't let her. She kissed her softly, Paige's hands reaching out and grabbing Emily's arms to pull her closer.
Out of the corner of her eye, Paige saw a blonde woman across the street, waving. She thought at first maybe it was Hanna. Reluctantly, she pulled away from kissing Emily and nodded in the woman's direction.
Emily looked over and then back at Paige, her expression changing from one of pure bliss to... embarassment?
"Hi, Mrs. D," Emily said, waving back at Alison's mother as the woman crossed the street to meet them. "How are you doing?" The woman hugged Emily and coldly reached out a hand to Paige.
"I'm good, dear. Who's your friend?"
Emily swallowed hard and struggled to find her words. "Paige. Mrs. DiLaurentis; Alison's mom."
"Paige, lovely to meet you. I remember my daughter mentioning your name a few times, but I don't think the two of you were close."
Paige shrugged and played it cool but inside she felt a great deal of discomfort. She could see clearly where Alison had gotten her apathy and spitefulness from.
"Well, girls, enjoy your evening. Get home safely. I wouldn't want to hear of anything else bad happening in this town. Take care, Emily," Mrs. DiLaurentis said, planting a quick kiss on Emily's cheek before strutting into The Grill.
"Sorry about that. She's been super weird lately," Emily said, walking ahead of Paige down the sidewalk. Paige jogged to catch up and reached out for Emily's hand.
"Why are you apologizing? It's fine, Em."
Emily forced a smile. She knew she should tell Paige about her past relationship with Alison - if you could even call it a relationship - but things were going so well. She didn't want to ruin a good thing before it even got started.
Emily nodded and smiled. "You don't have to walk me home. I know it's totally out of your way."
Paige shrugged. "I know. I like spending time with you though."
Emily paused and kissed the girl again, this time more passionately, her arms draped around Paige's neck.
"Good night, Paige," Emily said, her fingertips lingering against Paige's as they went their separate ways.
"Night, beautiful."
As Paige walked away, she couldn't help but glance back and grin. She felt as though she was floating on cloud night, her stomach full of fluttering butterflies and her heart in a tight grip. She had never known it would feel so good to fall.
